When former professional boxer Michael Corleone, of Franklin Square, opened his gym, Kayo Boxing, in West Hempstead in 2018, his goal was to help others become well-rounded individuals through boxing.

August 2013. He was taken to NYU Langone Hospital–Long Island, in Mineola, and survived despite having suffered a traumatic brain injury. After starting rehab that October, he returned home in December, but many of his motor functions were affected. His mother, Stacey Tucker, said Thomas had to relearn simple things such as walking and talking.

“He tried to do many different things as part of his recovery,” Tucker, of Roosevelt,

recounted. “He tried playing the piano, the guitar, but then he decided to take up boxing a few years ago.”

Tucker said that Thomas, who lives in Suffolk County, looked up numerous boxing gyms on Long Island before he stumbled on Kayo Boxing in 2019. Corleone acknowledge that when Tucker began training there, he was reluctant to take him on, because he didn’t want to make false promises.

Itgen was constantly looked to hone his craft, Emeish said, seeking the best ice cream and chocolate recipes. From 1981 to 1993, he served as president of the Confectioners’ and Ice Cream Manufacturers’ Association of the State of New York. “He was like a visionary,” she said, “and a true self-made man.”

Although often engrossed in his work, Itgen did make time outside the parlor. In the 1970s, he worked as a volunteer ambulance driver for the Malverne Fire Department, was a longtime member of the Malverne Rotary Club, and from the 1990s until shortly before his death, he served on the board of Plattdeutsche Park in Franklin Square, doing stints as president, vice president and treasurer for the catering hall, restaurant and beer garden.

He was also a philanthropist, Emeish said, at one point making a $300,000 donation to Plattdeutsche, which named a wing of the hall after Margaret, featuring a bust of her.

He also loved to travel, Michael said, occasionally taking 10 days off to visit exotic locales. “He traveled around the whole world,” he said, to place as diverse

as Cuba, the Great Wall of China and Casablanca, in addition to visiting relatives in Germany.

Over the years, business at Itgen’s began to decline as the demographics of the area changed. In 2017, the family sold the parlor, but even after the sale, Itgen and his wife continued to work in the back to the end of their lives. “That generation was always doing something,” Michael said of his parents.

“My mother worked hand in hand with him . . . I said, ‘I hope they enjoyed their lives,’’ Walter Jr. said, noting that they both died within a few years of selling their business.

In October 2019, Margaret died at 84, and after that, Itgen continued to work at his former parlor until his health forced him home. “He worked there until the end,” Michael said.

In addition Michael and Walter Jr., Itgen is survived by his brother Lother, in Germany; seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Itgen was buried at Pinelawn Cemetery with his wife. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Herald sports Rams relying on seniors to lead way

Though 16 months have passed since West Hempstead last stepped on the soccer pitch, the Rams are looking to pick up where they left off in 2019 when they posted a 7-2-1 conference mark and split a pair of Nassau Class A postseason overtime games.

Coach Chris Van Kovics brings back a portion of the starting 11 from the team which defeated Hewlett, 2-1, in OT, and lost a 3-2 double OT heartbreaker to Island Trees.

“It’s going to be an interesting season and I’m hoping it goes as smooth as basketball when we played every game on the schedule,” Van Kovics said. “The kids in our school have all done a great job following the Covid protocols. It’s not an easy situation and I’ve been impressed by how well they’ve handled everything.”

The Rams will rely on some key seniors to carry over their momentum from last season. Forward Ellean Maldonado was a fixture at offseason workouts and is a captain in his third varsity season. He’s quick and athletic and leads the scoring hopes with Jalen Jean, who has a nose for the ball and the skills to put it in the back of the net.

The midfield features Mohammed Zkuat, a target on set pieces who scored multiple times off headers in 2019. He’s also a physical defender. “He does a lot of good things for us,” Van Kovics said.

Also returning to the midfield is Edwin Gutierrez, who is shifty and nifty with the ball. “He’s a great distributor and not afraid of tight spaces,” the coach noted.

The defensive zone is led by senior Luis Zavala and junior Kevin DeCristoforo. Zavala brings plenty of experience and what he lacks in size he makes up with smart decisions and get-

The Rams face conference rivals Malverne/East Rockaway, Cold Spring Harbor, Carle Place, Oyster Bay, Island Trees, Friends Academy, Wheatley and Locust Valley once apiece.

West Hempstead’s girls are tackling the same group of opponents for new coach Monique Roberge. “We have an exciting young team of competitive kids,” she said.

The Malverne School District has brought K-12 Learning Experience to its schools and community through a virtual presentation of Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect’s “Letters from Anne & Martin” on March 2.

This production, led by The Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect, honors both Black History Month and Women’s History Month by combining the iconic voices of Anne Frank and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Both Frank and Dr. King were born in 1929, but represent drastically different times and cultures. The actors who portrayed these figures also delivered the important messages of their hopes and

plans for a peaceful and unified world.

In addition to this, Davison Avenue Intermediate School hosted a virtual assembly, in which author Nancy Churnin shared her message of hope and love through her book, “Martin and Anne: The Kindred Spirits of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Anne Frank.” The assembly was held on March 3 and is part of the district’s K-12 immersive cultural learning experience.

NCPD’s chief of support talks historic promotion

For the first time in Nassau Police Department history, a Black woman has been promoted to the position of chief of support.

Lorna Atmore, a 25-year member of NCPD, was promoted to the chief support position on Feb. 25. She succeeds Chief Ronald Walsh, who recently left to serve as Long Beach police commissioner.

Atmore is now commander of the Support Division, one of the department’s

largest units that includes the 911 center, information technology and the upcoming police body camera program. With the new position, Atmore is fifth in line for command of the department.

“I really appreciate the support of Commissioner Patrick Ryder and County Executive Laura Curran for their confidence in my abilities,” Atmore said. “I’m just really excited to step into the role and hopefully do a good job.”

Ryder said she is well qualified for her new role. “The promotion of Assistant Chief Lorna Atmore to three-star chief of support was an easy decision, as she is known to be one of the most dedicated and intelligent professionals in the executive ranks,” Ryder said in a statement. “I have great confidence in her ability to get the job done and to serve the residents in Nassau County.”

Curran said that she was pleased to promote Atmore to her new role. “I’m proud of the efforts Nassau continues to make to ensure our law enforcement reflects the rich diversity of our communities – especially for positions of leadership,” Curran said in a statement. “Chief Atmore’s dedication to the department and her command experience have defined her as a true professional, a leader and a trailblazer.”

Atmore began in the force as an officer and eventually rose to sergeant in the 3rd Precinct. She also led the 7th Precinct’s Detective Squad and was later promoted to captain, inspector and deputy commanding officer in the 4th Precinct, before being promoted to deputy chief of the support division. Family members who were in the New York City Police Department inspired her initial interest in a law enforcement career.

“I really thought the job wouldn’t be a fit for me at first, but my cousins assured me that I would enjoy the job and to give it a chance,” she said. “I took their word for it, and by the time I got done with the police academy, I was in love with the job.”

Atmore noted she wants to inspire young people of color who might be interested in a law enforcement career. “I hope that young people look up and see myself and other people of color in prominent positions and see what we’ve accomplished so they can visualize themselves as future leaders in law enforcement,” she said. “I think that we represent these opportunities that exist that young people may not know about.”

Atmore added that she hopes in the future that more people of color are promoted to prominent law enforcement posts. “I understand and appreciate the excitement of my promotion and its uniqueness,” she said. “In my mind, I’m hoping that in the next five to 10 years that promotions like this will be more commonplace.”

think pandemic affected us in a way that’s kind of hard to describe in words because we’ve never encountered anything like this ever before. Nothing in training ever prepared us for having more people die than in World War 2. This was a level we’ve never seen before, even the regular routine practice of seeing patients, we have to wear masks and we weren’t routinely doing that when we’re just meeting with patients.

A lot has changed, but we have to continue to forge ahead with what we signed up to do, which is to provide the best care to patients.

And do the best we can.

What has changed for me is I’m meeting patients, and I don’t know what they look like behind the mask. I just see the eyes. I think humans we rely on facial features to make

connections and I feel that has been quite challenging, it makes it even more important that we communicate everything and make sure the patients and I are on the same page when we discuss patients’ care plans.

I do see a lot of fear among the patients in the community, and again it’s our job to try to help support and overcome that fear because we’re all facing it. It’s not like we’re not facing it as well, but I feel it’s my duty to meet some of the fear that these patients have. It’s not something we’ve discussed before. Is your hospital safe? They might be afraid of.

We have to take care we don’t inadvertently infect people, which was not something we had prior to the pandemic.

Many people have slowed down and are taking time to smell the roses. Several people have received the COVID 19 vaccine, which brings hope for the future. Perhaps the adversity has improved us all in some ways. It has not been easy, but we persevere.

s medical director, I’m in charge of oversight for the ambulance corps and relaying information to the ambulance corps in order to help them understand how they should be handling different types of patients. Back when there was Ebola, we dealt with that in a similar way.

I had Covid back in March, and it took me until the end of June to be able to ride my bike again, so it took me a long time to recover from it. I’ve had numerous patients that were sick with Covid and ambulance corps members that were ill as well, but fortunately, the vast majority did recover.On the bright side, the evolution of telemedicine has been very nice.

I’ve been able to help people alleviate their stresses and connect with them virtually, whereas in the past, that wasn’t possible. I’ve

had a lot of patients who not only suffered from Covid-19, they also suffered from being quarantined. Many of my patients never showed these symptoms until the pandemic, and that’s when they became agoraphobic [fearful of places that might cause panic].

I’m hoping that by late spring-early summer, we’ll be able to get back to doing what we want to do. The combination of the downward slope of the infection curve on the [Center for Disease Control and Prevention's] website, seeing people getting better and people getting vaccinated is making this curve drop dramatically lower. At the ambulance corps, we’re honored and privileged to be able to help people in need. We just want people to continue to do the right thing and to be sensible, but at the same time, not be fearful.

y job is basically to make sure all the units are appropriately staffed, so I try to plug holes and make sure there is enough staff for all units.

When the coronavirus first spiked, it was very, very busy. We were fortunate enough to be able to pull in outside resources that weren’t being used at the time. We had to basically move things around every day to make sure there was enough staff. It almost always felt like their wasn’t enough staff every day, and it’s not anyone’s fault, it was just difficult.

It was really great to see the nurses and patient care techs come together, especially those who came from another area of the hospital. They really just stepped up and even not just the front-line people, but those behind

the scenes picked up overtime and stayed extra hours.

Even recently, people jumped on board and did what they could, and it was really great to see everyone work together. It was definitely a struggle, but everyone came together and did their role to make it work. People went above and beyond, even doing things that they weren’t used to doing and haven’t done in many years.

I’ve been in this job for 10 years, and I have never seen anything like this virus in terms of the amount of sick patients we had to deal with. The patient census was the highest it’s ever been as long as I’ve been here. It’s just amazing to see people step up, and it’s amazing that we got through it.

As for Corleone’s newfound popularity, he told the Herald that he had finally found his calling in life. “To find the joy in training somebody who is just looking to be better than they were yesterday, that’s the best,” he said. “It brings me joy, but I don’t want to take credit or let my head blow up and let people think that I’m the next messiah. I’m just the vessel that’s carrying them along.”

“We’re humbled by this experience,” said Tucker, who is an independent contractor. “I didn’t even know until Mike told me, and then my other son told me that Lorenzo is all over social media.”

Corleone’s step-by-step approach, Tucker said, helped Thomas improve his motor functions. Thomas, who was a senior at Upper Room Christian School in Dix Hills at the time of the shooting, didn’t finish high school due to his injury, but he still has hopes of earning his GED. “He was already walking without the walker at times,” Tucker said, “but now he’s gotten a little bit stronger through boxing with Mike. Lorenzo has been an inspiration to many people, and he’s even pushing his siblings and I to stay active and to better ourselves.”

Thomas’s viral video has attracted other boxers to Kayo Boxing, including 18-year-old Donovan Maldonado, of Brentwood, who is also recovering from a traumatic brain injury. His parents, Laura Garces and Matthew Maldonado, said that Corleone’s patience with Thomas drew them to the gym.

“We were nervous, because of the brain injury, about putting him in something like that,” said Garces, an administrative assistant in Syosset. “Then we saw the video of Mike working on Lorenzo one-on-one. He was very careful in dealing with Lorenzo’s balance and hand-eye coordination. Something as simple as turning your shoulder when you’re jabbing, it’s a lot for people with a brain injury.”

Maldonado was walking home from North Middle School in January 2016 when he was hit by car while crossing a street, and landed on his head. He was taken to South Side Hospital in Bay Shore, and was later transported to Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park. Similar to Thomas, his motor functions were affected, and he was legally blind at one point.

As his health slowly improved each year, Maldonado said, he had an interest in taking up boxing or martial arts. “I’ve always wanted to learn how throw a punch,” he said, “and now I’m glad that I actually know how to punch correctly

thanks to Kayo Boxing.”

“I became a big crybaby watching his progress every day,” his father said.

“From being told that your child isn’t going to make it to now seeing him hitting the pads and throwing combinations, it’s just a blessing.”

Maldonado, who works in the linen department at South Side Hospital and as a night custodian in the Brentwood School District, said that his family was concerned about some of the state’s proposed budget cuts. They include seven Care Coordination Organizations/Health Homes that were created in 2018 to sup-

Hundreds of people were already lined up to see what the new Lidl supermarket on Dogwood Avenue has to offer by 7 a.m. last Wednesday morning, a good half an hour before its official grand opening ceremony.

“It’s going to be brand-spanking-new,” said Christine Straub, of Franklin Square, who had previously shopped at the Germany-based supermarket’s East Meadow location where Kristina Mills, of West Hempstead, would buy seasonal goods at a low price. “I think they’re going to do very well,” Straub said.

The supermarket chain first opened in Ludwigshafen, Germany in 1973, with only three employees and about 500 products, but by the 1990s, there were a number of Lidl stores popping up throughout Europe. It established a headquarters in the United States in June 2015, and in 2018, Lidl acquired 27 Best Market locations in New York and New Jersey.

Its mission, according to the Lidl website, is to offer customers high-quality fresh produce, meat, baked goods and household products at the lowest possible prices. The Franklin Square location also offers a bakery, an international foods section, baby items and everyday groceries, as well as items that are not usually found

The staff then introduced themselves with a choreographed dance, and local officials were able to get a private tour of the facility before it officially opened to the public.

“It’s looking very good,” said Town Councilman Thomas Muscarella, with

Q. Our home is in serious need of renovation, and we want to do things that are more cost-effective and environmentally friendly, like solar, collecting rainwater for an indoor garden and outdoor plants, heat collection to heat our house and water — we’ve been making a list for a couple of years while we figure this out. I plan to do most of the heavy lifting myself and get people who can help me with the power, A.C. and water to save money and get what I want. Do I have to get any kind of special approvals for the plumbing or electrical if I do it myself? I’ve already done plumbing and electrical in my home without anything special.

A. It’s exciting when I see a project where the systems are being integrated and technologies and nature are working together. More people are now looking to create an open and airy home that “fits” to a site, in their environment, without as much maintenance as their parents had to do.

Most of what you’re doing costs more at the beginonte eeper ning, but can save tremendously the longer it’s in use.

By doing your own labor, you’re saving on the most costly component of construction, but can you do the work yourself ? I’m seeing this trend more with the latest generation of younger homeowners, who are interested in bringing in more sunlight, open spaces that heat and cool more naturally, creating an experience to live in. It’s harder to do on cookie-cutter plots of land, but with so many maintenance-free time- and cost-saving technologies, like using your voice or programming to turn on lights, lower the temperature or start a meal, the Carousel of Progress at Disney World will need to catch up.

The answer to your question has to do with health and safety, mainly. Skilled and trained professionals generally know how to install and troubleshoot or anticipate problems you may not know about. You need to know where these newer systems have faults and failures if you plan to do the work yourself. Certain materials come in subtle gradations, like gauges of wiring, tolerances of tubing, thicknesses of copper, for example, and using the wrong one could reduce the longevity of the system or cause dangerous results. Most municipalities require that licensed electricians and plumbers do the work, but will allow you to qualify with a test and interview to show your competency.

Over the years I have had many clients do their own work successfully, but most have leveled with me that there were certain things they either would have done differently or had someone else do, because the project required tools or time they just didn’t want to invest in. Most important, even if you do get permission to do the work yourself, you’ll need to have it inspected. Without final and official certificates, you may not be able to sell your home. Good luck!

year ago, we faced many new challenges as the coronavirus threw the world into a panic.

Many unanswered questions made us fearful of both the known and the unknown. Despite this heightened level of stress, we adjusted, and new approaches to cope with the pandemic arose.

We Zoomed from room to room, and country to country, without having to pack our bags or experience jet lag.

We found a new dress code for our virtual meetings: ROBERT mullet outfits with “business on GOLDMAN the top, party on the bottom,” and made sure to turn off the cat filter. Masks became more than just a protective measure: They became a fashion statement, or an advertisement or promotion for a business, product or cause. For some of us, reality TV became an escape: Joe Exotic was anointed the “Tiger King,” as the mystery of who killed Carole Baskin’s husband still lingers. Speaking of lingering, some of us put on the pandemic

pounds as we binged on series and food.

All of the changes emerging from the pandemic are linked to our human need to stay connected during times of adversity. Fads are an expression of belongingness. Sadly, the social deprivation that we all experienced left a hole in this fundamental human need for contact and connectedness. As we had to increasingly remain socially distant, our need for emotional connectedness grew stronger.

As an attorney and practicing psychologist, I witnessed firsthand how many of my attorney colleagues reported on social media feeling stressed.

This was a shocker, as attorneys are known for being loath to admit they struggle. I felt a call to action, and started offering resiliency training over Zoom to my fellow attorneys. Little did I know that this group would offer me support as I mourned the passing of my father during the pandemic, when public gathering was prohibited. The Virtual Lawyers Lounge continues to be relevant, and is more than 500 members strong.

The pandemic was a rare event in which human distress was universal, as

we learned early on that Covid-19 does not discriminate. Our common experience of living through the pandemic created a space for empathy across the world, even if we couldn’t give a hug or wipe a tear for those who needed it the most. The buzzword born out of our universal experience is resilience: the ability to overcome adversity. By our evolutionary nature, resilience is tied to our need to survive. We survived by finding new ways to connect. These new ways should not be forgotten, but rather incorporated into our “new normal,” whatever that is.

Now, as the vaccines roll out and the new world opens up, questions stoke our fears. Is the new world safe? What will the new normal look like? This anxiety is the reality for adults and children who were abruptly thrown into a new lifestyle, without any mental or emotional buffers. For example, the child who will awaken from his Covid-19 slumber of gaming and return to a classroom setting where he will barely recognize his classmates through the mask-covered mouths and protective Plexiglas that separates them from one another.

As we venture into the new normal, I envision a world of hope and reprioritized values. For a resilient march to this new normal, we must acknowledge that much of what we believe in having control over is just an illusion; we need to remain present in all that we do and appreciate the temporary nature of all circumstances.

When the inevitable, unpredictable event happens, embracing it with optimism, fortitude and courage helps us through the rough patch and aids us as we move forward to where we want to be. Most important, in the resilient march to the new normal, we must never forget the need and value of hugging one another, rebuilding our personal connections, wiping away a tear and offering an approving smile that may be seen with or without a mask.

As of this writing, 2.65 million people across the world have died because of the coronavirus. In honoring those we lost and keeping alive the lessons learned, we must become more vigilant about tending to our health, physically and mentally.

Fragments: surviving a season of loss

didn’t tune in to the news at all yesterday, and that was a happy change from one year ago, when I couldn’t not watch, but when I did watch, the grim predictions from epidemiologists, juxtaposed with the misinformation coming from the White House, had me worried sick.

Doctors told us to wear masks, stay at home, close schools and avoid contact even with our parents and children and grandchildren. At the same time, the president rolled out his RANDI no-big-deal mesKREISS sage. He promised that the coronavirus would just go away. Yet people were dying, and refrigerator morgue trucks were parked on New York City streets. For me, not trusting our highest elected officials to keep us safe in the face of a historic pandemic was psychologically destabilizing.

The message was: You’re on your own.

We did what we had to do. No kids, no supermarkets, no friends and no communal events of any kind.

Now, one year later, I don’t need to hear the news because I trust that the government is going about its business, fighting the best fight it can against the virus.

What does this pandemic anniversary mean to us?

My husband and I are just past two weeks since our second vaccine. I think we’ll be fine, but there is a definite process to reemerging and rebooting a full life.

With the second jab, it isn’t as if this dreadful year gets erased. Just a glance in the mirror reminds me that I’m not the same person I was last March. I made a joke in a column last year about my own personal silver lining as my hair turned gray.

Now it’s even more so, and very long, a kind of metaphor about time and change and a new acceptance of mortality.

I’m thinking about my friends of the heart who died over the past year, Marlene and Marty and Don. I mention their names to write them into my world and honor their memory. They didn’t all die of Covid-19, but they left this world too

soon and without the comforting rituals of traditional funerals and visiting among family and friends after the loss.

Letting them go is more difficult because there was no way to say a real goodbye or hold the hands of their loved ones. My husband has photos of these buddies pasted on a full wall in his office, like the man without a country, yearning for “home.”

Living through this year, with plenty of food and access to the Internet and the ability to work online, reminded me that good fortune shines on only some people. More than 530,000 of us died, many because they had to go to work, or lived in large family groups or couldn’t figure out the byzantine vaccine rollout protocols. I don’t know their names, but I want to carry them with me into the post-pandemic world, with a kind of “never forget” mantra. They shouldn’t just disappear.

ning that the teenagers suffered most from the isolation and emotional vacuum that can follow months of down time with no other kids around. I have faith in their resilience, though, and history teaches us that young people have survived other deprivations, especially during wartime.

We ventured out the other evening for the very first time, to sit in an outside tented area of a restaurant. It wasn’t perfect. It felt strange to wait for food, and I was impatient. I realize I have to give this new normal some time.

One year after the pandemic began surging across America and the world, my freezer is still packed. I have more toilet paper than I need. I remember some of my parents’ behaviors, which I called a Depression-era mentality, and I know we have adopted some slightly irrational habits as a result of our anxiety during the worst days of Covid-19.

I expect all of this will evolve as our faith in the future — any future — is restored. I would like to live long enough to read the great books that will surely be written about this year, especially the fiction, which so often touches the most profound truths.

Federal aid gives Nassau a shot in the arm

assau County got some very good news last week after passage of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan: The county will receive $397.7 million in federal aid to pay for expenses after it fell into a deep budget hole caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Covid-19 has not only killed more than 530,000 people in the United States, but also has ravaged the finances of our state and local governments and school districts. States and counties — which depend heavily on sales taxes for funding — were particularly hard hit over the past year. People haven’t been shopping at local businesses the way they did before the pandemic, in part because many fear contracting the virus in public, and many simply haven’t the money to shop.

We hope and trust that the ARP will be a vital shot in the arm to reignite the economy, both here in New York and across the country. It is certainly giving local elected leaders the opportunity to breathe easier, knowing they won’t have to lay off essential workers, including police officers and emergency medical technicians.

In total, New York state will receive $12.6 billion in aid, which will be used to mitigate the spread of the virus and enhance the vaccination effort, as well as balance the state’s budget so it, too, can avoid layoffs. School districts will also benefit from the funding allocation.

letters Stimulus bill delivers relief To the Editor: Congressional passage of the most recent stimulus bill, called the American Rescue Plan, is great news for all Americans, regardless of your politics. Beyond delivering much-needed relief to people struggling to make ends meet, this bill also provides the bold federal investment necessary to accelerate vaccine distribution, ensure that schools fully reopen and support struggling small businesses, like our restaurants.

I am especially pleased that this bill funds local governments like Nassau County, particularly as we continue to hold the front line in our fight to defeat the coronavirus once and for all.

No doubt, the ARP is far-reaching.

We should all be thankful that state and local governments will be made whole after a historically devastating year. Leaving them to fend for themselves — essentially the plan of Republican leaders like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell — could have, and likely would have, been disastrous. Mass layoffs of front-line workers would have meant a double whammy for the nation: We would have lost not only many people entrusted with protecting our safety during the pandemic, but also their spending power and tax dollars.

The first round of federal pandemic aid provided by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, or CARES, was a $2.2 trillion economic stimulus bill, passed last March, that provided aid to states and, in a more limited way, local governments, as well as loans to businesses. It saved tens of thousands of businesses, especially small ones, and many, many lives, in particular through vaccine research.

The trouble was this: Any aid that state and local governments accepted could be used only to fund coronavirus mitigation efforts. There was no aid to those governments to continue operations while the economy was tanking last spring. State and local elected leaders pleaded — practically begged — for greater aid beyond funding for coronavirus mitigation, but the Republican-controlled Senate and President Trump would not budge.

The second round of aid, a hotly contested bill signed late last year, provided $900 billion, again without unrestricted aid to state and local governments.

With this third round of federal aid, we are seeing the load lifted for state and local elected leaders. At the same time, the American Rescue Plan will increase funding for vaccination programs, and provide $1,400 in direct aid to a majority of working families and individuals and greater funding for small businesses.

Yes, we continue to add to America’s debt — a debt that will one day have to be repaid. U.S. debt now stands at $27 trillion — or 128 percent of our gross domestic product. Only 10 years ago, we worried that our debt had surpassed 90 percent of GDP. So yes, we will have to cut back in the future.

Now, however, is not the time. In the here and now, we must focus on economic recovery, and the only way to lift ourselves out of our current fiscal quagmire and jump-start spending is through federal aid.

Going forward, we will have to work harder than ever — and we will have to do so together, united as one country, Republicans and Democrats. And we will have to innovate, which means we will have to focus more than ever on providing educational resources not only to our children, but to people of all ages.

As a nation, we will survive, but we will have to do a lot better than we did in 2020.

uring the coronavirus pandemic, many of us have needed to get outside, and have rediscovered the joy of walking or riding a bike to see friends and exercise. Should this trend continue — and record bike sales suggest that it will — then New Yorkers will be healthier, traffic will be less congested and air quality will improve. But for walking and biking to be realistic options for most people, we first need to invest in safe and adequate infrastructure, just as we have Carter done for every mode of striCkLanD other transportation.

This is a critical public safety issue for Long Island. Today, our roads are too risky — Nassau and Suffolk counties were ranked second and third most dangerous in the state, as measured by the number of fatalities, personal injuries and property damage resulting from traf-

fic crashes. In fact, in 2019, Long Island accounted for over a quarter of all bicycle fatalities in New York. Too many lives have been lost because of dangerous roads.

Safe places to bike and walk are also part of a holistic economic recovery. Civic leaders seeking to attract and retain young professionals with amenities comparable to any major city and to solidify a strong “sense of place” across the Island have already invested in revitalizing downtowns with walkable communities and affordable multi-family housing. The missing commercial part of that mix may follow even faster than expected now, as many people who have worked from home for more than a year question the value of long commutes. In fact, the large redevelopment areas proposed for Long Island are mixed use, with the intention of creating live-work-play communities — and future residents and workers will look for recreational opportunities and better connections to parks.

The gravity of these claims makes it clear to us that the governor cannot lead the state while faithfully responding to multiple investigations. This is especially true in light of the impending state budget deadline, the need to continue guiding the state through the coronavirus pandemic and the fragility of the state’s economic recovery.

The New York State Constitution demands that if the governor is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of the office of Governor, the Lieutenant-Governor shall act as the Governor until the inability shall cease.” We call on the Cuomo to step aside, at least until such time that the state attorney general’s investigation is complete. We are confident that the lieutenant governor would ably serve the people of New York.

Was the chopper really necessary?

To the Editor: Was it really essential for Gov. Andrew Cuomo to travel from Albany via helicopter to visit the round-the-clock Covid-19 vaccination center at the Javits Convention Center recently? The event was little more than a career politician’s photo op.

The good news is that both Nassau and Suffolk counties have started to invest in safe biking and walking trails. There are first-class bike paths in Eisenhower Park and Bethpage State Park, as well as several trail systems in parks and a few northsouth trails. What is missing is a main artery to tie this all together, much as the Long Island Expressway did for an earlier generation that wanted to drive their cars to the post-war suburbs.

A proposed Long Island Greenway would provide this connectivity and jumpstart a true network of trails for point-to-point travel across the Island. Stretching 175 miles from Manhattan to Montauk, the greenway would be a multi-purpose trail that would be mostly off-road along power lines, connecting downtown redevelopment areas such as Innovation Park and the Nassau Hub, 26 parks and 46 train stations. It would make walking and biking safe for people on Long Island and a real option for exercising, visiting friends, even picking up gro-

ceries. And it would be good for downtown business as well: Trail users spend about $250,000 per mile annually on trailrelated local businesses, according to a 2012 study by the Rails to Trails Conservancy.

This project could be shovel-ready and provide jobs in the near term while setting the foundation for Long Island’s success over the long term. The state has already built the Empire State Trail from Buffalo to New York City, and has invested in preliminary engineering studies to extend it across Long Island. According to a study released recently by New Yorkers for Clean Water and Jobs, 65,000 jobs could be created by the $3 billion New York State Environmental Bond Act, which would support projects like the Long Island Greenway. We need those jobs now to help our economic recovery, and those investments would pay back health and economic dividends for years. Long Islanders should call on their elected officials to support investments in park infrastructure.

Why couldn’t Cuomo ride Amtrak from Albany to Manhattan? upon arrival, it would have been a quick five-minute walk through the $1.6 billion Moynihan Train Hall to the Javits Convention Center.

Perhaps Cuomo didn’t want to rub shoulders with constituents while riding Amtrak and walking to his news conference. He might have also run into reporters, who were banned from the Javits Center event. They might have asked some embarrassing questions dealing with his ongoing nursing home and sexual harassment scandals.

The day before his visit, u.S. Representatives Carolyn Maloney, Jerry Nadler and Nydia velazques, along with Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, conducted a news conference at the Manhattan 30th Street Heliport. They called for the elimination of non-essential helicopter rides, like the one that Cuomo took. Before he became president, Joe Biden was known as “Amtrak Joe.” He regularly commuted from his delaware home to Washington, d.C., via Amtrak for decades.

Why couldn’t Cuomo emulate Biden?

Forget the helicopter trips to and from Albany to the Big Apple. Lead by example. He should show his support for transit just like Biden and become “Amtrak Andrew.”
