T h e We s t H e m p s t e a d Junior Fire Department offers young people 12 to 17 an opportunity to train in fire, rescue and emergency situations and provide them a better understanding of the risk and responsibilities of the fire service. Fire Department volunteer Richard Gresser coordinates the junior program that meets twice a month — on the
first Sunday morning and the third Wednesday evening — the West Hempstead firehouse. “We train them in every aspect of firefighting [and] E.M.S. capabilities that we would a normal person who would join at 18 as a fullfledged firefighter,” Chief Andrew Brohm said, adding that the department recently lowered the age to join the regular department to 17, that age group can also remain part of the junior program.
“They get the same exact training just without the degree of danger to it — no active fire, no active smoke.” Junior members receive orientation and handle fire hoses, stair chair lifts, airpaks, fire trucks, ambulances, air lifting bags, stokes baskets, ladders, stretchers and more.
