West Hempstead’s St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church has an active ministry that is committed to helping people in need of food, and the efforts have aided many, with donations totaling over a ton in 2021. Throughout the year, St. Andrew’s collaborates with other ministries, such as Grace Lutheran Church’s New LIFE Center pantry in
Uniondale, the Interfaith Nutrition Network in Hempstead and the New York Racetrack Chaplaincy at Belmont Park in Elmont, and holds its own food collection at the church and through church events. The racetrack chaplaincy serves Belmont Park, Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens and the upstate Saratoga Race Course stable workers and their families, offering children’s enrichment, social service, educational and recre-
ational programming as well as non-denominational religious services. “I read that the only miracle that occurred in all four gospels was Jesus’ feeding of the 5,000, and that just, to me, seemed very symbolic,” said Jeff Berbert, president of the St. Andrew’s church council. “It just became very important to me to feed people.
