Malverne S.D. honors 2 staffers Humanitarians will be recognized at MLK event By lISA MARGARIA lmargaria@liherald.com

The Malverne Union Free School District selected two staff members, Meredyth Martini, the director of special education, and Martine Laventure, the social worker at Davison Avenue Intermediate School, in Lynbrook, to receive a Humanitarian Award at the district’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on Jan. 27.

The event will take place at Howard T. Herbert Middle School, and be livestreamed on the district website, with attendance restricted because of coronavirus precautions. “Every year, we honor a member of the community who best represents the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King,” said Stephen Benfante, assistant principal at Davison Avenue, who was coordinating the event. “Our two honorees, Martine

Laventure and Meredyth Martini, were well chosen,” Dr. Lorna L ew i s, s u p e r i n t e n d e n t o f schools, wrote in an email. “Their work mirrors the efforts of Dr. King as they tirelessly engage to unlock possibilities for the children they serve.” Martini earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from St. John’s University, along with a degree in educational leaderContinued on page 9
