For his impact on and off the field, Vito will be inducted into the Nassau County High School Sports Hall of Fame’s class of 2020.

Hall of Famer Joe Vito made impact on, off field shared with all those people.”

Vito, 57, was to be inducted in a ceremony in September, but it was postponed until next September because of the coronavirus pandemic. He began playing football with the inaugural East Rockaway Raiders team in 1971 and went on to play for the Rocks in high school. He said Raiders coaches Jerry Chapel and Joseph Carrigan, who became an East Rockaway mayor, were influential in shaping his passion for the sport at an early age. In high school, he said his former coach Tom Forps helped foster that drive, and his guidance helped Vito reach the pinnacle of his profession years later.

East Rockaway Mayor Bruno Romano and the village board honored Vito at its Nov. 19 board meeting and presented him with a citation. Vito said he was proud to have his brothers, Charles and Robert, and his mother, Sue — whom he said is affectionately known as “Mama Vito” — in attendance when the board recognized him.

“East Rockaway is a quaint community, and they’re proud of the accomplishments of their people,” he said. “It’s so nice that they do that.”

In addition to the championships, Vito and his teams have earned many accolades over the years. In 1999 and 2004, they were awarded the Rutgers Cup as the most outstanding team in the county.

Elected officials and local political groups also released statements reacting to the election.

U.S. Rep. Kathleen Rice, who last week defeated challenger Douglas Tuman to earn re-election in New York’s 4th Congressional District, congratulated Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on Twitter.

Rice said the results of the election filled her with hope, tweeting, “The Biden-Harris administration will lead with dignity and help bring our nation back together.”

Rice then released a statement congratulating Biden and Harris, and said she was hopeful the country could be united again.

“This was a historic election,” the statement read. “Joe Biden received more votes than anyone running for president in our nation’s history. And for the first time, a woman will be the vice president of the United States — sending a clear message to little girls in every corner of this country that they too can be anything they want to be.”

The Nassau County Democratic Committee released a statement on Facebook, in which it expressed its satisfaction about the party’s victory, while the Republican Committee had yet to release an official statement at press time.

“Today isn’t about Democrats or Republicans; it’s about Americans coming together to unite our country,” the Democrats’ statement read.

“We campaigned and voted for Joe Biden, not because he was the Democratic candidate, but because he is the only candidate who can unite our country after four years of hatred and division.”

Pettus said the honor was overdue for Vito, whom he called a father figure, and added that he deserves it as much for his attitude off the field as he does for his success on it.

“He’s not just a coach,” Pettus said.

“He’s a member of so many people’s families because he gives that much love to everyone and gets it in return. As a kid, my father was not around as much as I would have liked him to be, and with Coach Vito being a part of my life, it was easy for me to grow up and learn the lessons that I needed to learn. I think that is really where he shines the brightest.”

At Roosevelt High, Vito is also a phys.ed. teacher and coaches track and field.

Pettus also took part in track and field, and was there when Vito guided the 4-by100-meter relay team to a state champion-

ship. Following in his mentor’s footsteps, Pettus went on to teach phys.-ed. at Alden Terrace School in Elmont, and was a coach at Roosevelt for many years.

Pettus was also selected as a class of 2020 Hall of Famer, and Vito said he was honored to be inducted alongside his former running back.

“I believe he changed the tide of our football program and taught our kids how to win, and from then on we’ve had a pretty successful run,” Vito said, noting that the team still maintains a run-heavy offense two decades later.

Johnnie Akins, who played running back and linebacker under Vito from 2011 to 2013, said the coach helped his players grow and supported them personally by helping families who needed assistance keep their lights on, or by paying for food and haircuts for players in need. Akins said he strives to be “Joe Vito 2.0,” becoming a phys.-ed. teacher and football coach at Ithaca College, where he strives to instill many of the lessons and values that his former coach taught him.

“I’m just happy that he came into my life because I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it wasn’t for him,” Akins said. “I don’t know if I’d be into teaching or coaching. He’s like a father figure to me, and I’m glad he has been recognized for the great person he is.”

Vito is also president of the Nassau County High School Football Coaches Association; on the executive board of the New York State High School Football Coaches Association, for which he was a president; and an advisory board member of the Nassau chapter of the National Football Foundation and the College Hall of Fame Inc. “I hope that I impacted young people’s lives, and I hope that I taught them as much as they’ve taught me,” Vito said.

“My whole life really is about trying to make a difference in kids’ lives. That’s it.

That’s my mission.”

A ‘spook-tacular’ time at Rolling River

It was a hauntingly happy time on Halloween at Rolling River Day Camp in East Rockaway as the facility hosted a Halloween Spooktacular event.

“When we found out that there was a possibility that Halloween may be cancelled in New York, we all agreed that we needed to be there for our children to get dressed up and give them a sense of normalcy, just like we did during the summer,” Camp Director Rhonda Goodman said, “. . . Our goal for this event was to provide a sense of community in a familiar atmosphere, normalcy during a unprecedented time and a safe haven for families and children to have fun in the tradition of trick-or-treating so that they did not need to expose themselves by visiting strangers door to door.”

The event encouraged attendees to have fun while practicing safety protocols and social distancing, and lasted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities included a cross fit kids obstacle course, a temporary tattoos stand, a bracelet making station, a Halloween rubber ducky race, a horse corral, a photo booth, pumpkin decorating, a balloon artist, trick or treat bag decorating, spooky bikes and more.

“I participated in the event because it gave me a chance to see my campers again in a safe and fun way,” said voulunteer Judi Lisi, an Oceanside resident. “It felt good to be back at camp and it brought back such good memories of the summer. I was able to meet many of my campers’ parents in person for the first time since the summer restrictions prevented that connection.”

Attendees had to register for the event in advance, and it was only available for those who are enrolled in summer camp for 2021. Safety protocols included mask wearing, staggered times, a limit of no more than 25 children admitted in a onehour time period and sanitizer stations being placed.

The festivities were a hit with many attendees, including Oceanside resident Ben Coffman. “The Halloween Spooktacular was a tremendous opportunity for my daughter to see her friends and campers from other schools in safe and fun environment,” he said. “It was great that the Rolling River staff made an unusual Hal-

Stephanie Gay, of Oceanside, said she felt secure while attending the event. “As always, we felt safe and comfortable at Rolling River for Halloween,” she said.

“The staff made our children feel like it was a normal day of fun, sports and arts and crafts. My daughter had a phenomenal time.”

Susan Messenger, who also lives in Oceanside, said the staff created a safe and fun environment. “Our family had an amazing time participating in all of the fun stations, which also limited the number of attendees per station to allow for social distancing,” she said. “I’m thankful that Halloween was both special and memorable for my daughter.”

Lynbrook restaurateur looks ahead to uncertain months Despite the unseasonably warm weather as of late, many restaurant owners in East Rockaway, Lynbrook and across Nassau County will soon have to adjust their business models with the cold months looming.

Frank Abbracciamento, the owner of Abbracciamento’s at 174 Merrick Road in Lynbrook, said he would soon have to put an end to outdoor dining because the weather will get cold and heaters are not cost efficient for their limited use. He added that his business has taken a significant hit since the coronavirus pandemic first began.

“Business is still off by 70 percent,” he said. “You’re busy on weekends, but the weekdays drag along. More people come out on the weekend, but I think it’s going to be a while before business returns. It’s not back yet at all.”

Abbracciamento’s opened in November 2019 and then had to close for five months starting in mid-March. Now, Abbracciamento said, he is trying his hardest to generate business. While he would like to continue to have outdoor dining into the winter, Abbracciamento said, it is unfeasible because it risks his staff getting sick by going from the hot kitchen to the cold outdoors, while he noted that heaters are expensive and he would have no place to store them in the warmer months.

Space is not an issue when it comes to seating in his restaurant, however, as he said he can comfortably seat patrons at three different sections while offering plenty of room to make them comfortable and safe. Nassau County restaurants can only seat up to 50 percent capacity, as mandated by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. At full capacity, Abbracciamento’s seats 150 inside and 40 outdoors.

Abbracciamento has implemented other methods to ensure the health of his customers and staff, including mask wearing, sanitizing stations and spacing apart tables, but he said plenty of people are still wary of eating inside.

In addition to losing business, Abbracciamento said, the coronavirus has caused him to lay off eight employees because there isn’t enough work to go around. He now has nine staff members, who he alternates so they each have a chance to make money.

Though the virus has brought with it many obstacles for business owners, Abbracciamento said he was trying to stay positive.

“We opened for three months, closed for five months and we are trying to build back up again,” he said. “There are weeks where you’re not even covering your costs, but you’ve got to have the strong will to survive.”

Elks donate red ribbons to promote a drug-free lifestyle Officers and members of New York Elks Lodge No. 1 recently spent $650 to purchase 2,500 red ribbons that will be presented to local schools.

The donation is part of the say no to drugs red ribbons campaign, and the first school to receive the donation was Brooklyn Avenue School, in Valley Stream. The Elks presented 500 red ribbons to students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

They also presented ribbons to Marion Street and West End elementary schools and Davison Avenue Intermediate School in Lynbrook.

The Elks Lodge has presented red ribbons to young children for many years.

“The officers and members of Lodge No. 1 are proud to let our young children realize that using drugs is no good and they should stay away from them,” the lodge wrote in a statement. “Elks believe making our younger children aware earlier in life will benefit them as they become young adults to stay away from drugs.”

Sudents jump into Health and Wellness Week Students and staff from the Lynbrook Kindergarten Center and Waverly Park Elementary School celebrated Health and Wellness Week from Oct. 19-23.

Each day a new health and wellness topic was covered, which the school communities focused on in creative and fun ways.

At the Lynbrook Kindergarten Center, parent Shana Conza organized the week and taught students yoga outside. Principal Ellen Postman also read a book to classes each day. After reading “Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site” by Sherri Duskey Rinker, students wrote letters to the construction workers at Lynbrook High School. In addition, the kindergartners learned about nutrition, proper hygiene, the importance of sleep and self-care with activities throughout the week.

At Waverly Park Elementary School, remote and in-person students in kindergarten through fifth grade dressed in a different color of the rainbow each day to represent a healthy fruit and brought in healthy snacks according to that color. During the week, they participated in a “Fruit Ninja” game outside with balloons and noodle drumming, led

by Lynbrook North Middle School phys-ed teacher Brian Bowes.

Students also had many virtual visitors, including chiropractor Dr. Jill Feldhun-Stein who instructed students on Tech Neck, Janice from Cross Fit Kids, Sensi Uly from Long Island Martial Arts, who got students up and moving, and two Lynbrook High School students, Olivia Ackerman and Mia Tetelman, who educated students on social media etiquette. The week was filled with meditation, mindful crafting, yoga, jump roping and plenty of movement.

After the postponement of sports in Nassau County by the Section VIII Superintendents Board, the Lynbrook Public Schools Athletic Department created an intramural program for Lynbrook middle and high school students.

The program began on Sept.

29 and is expected to continue until Nov. 20, weather permitting. About 400 Lynbrook students joined the program, which comprises low-risk sports and conditioning. Offerings include cross-country, soccer, tennis and strength and conditioning.

Due to the pandemic, the district is following strict protocols for the safety and health of all student participants. The sharing of equipment, use of lockers and school building access is prohibited. Students must also complete an online screening each day on the school app ZippSlip and have a mask with them in the event that social distancing during drills cannot be maintained.

To start the festivities, Rhame Avenue Elementary School Principal Ayesha McArthur presented board members with gifts and showed a video of students expressing their gratitude for the board’s year-round efforts.

This recognition follows the New York State School Boards Association’s School Board Recognition Week that ran from Oct. 19 to 23. The week enables board members to be honored for their volunteer service, commitment and contributions to

their schools and community.

Superintendent of Schools Lisa Ruiz said board members demonstrate commitment and hard work to their list of responsibilities.

“School board trustees are volunteers and they receive no pay or any type of compensation for their service,” Ruiz explained. “I know that our trustees take their responsibility and public trust very seriously, dedicating an enormous number of hours to their work both in and outside of board meetings.”

“Although it is not traditional sports, it is an outlet for the kids to exercise, socialize and feel some sense of normalcy,” Joseph Martillotti, district director of athletics, physical education and health, said in a news release. “We are doing so following the regulations set by the state. With the governor giving the go-ahead for lowr i s k o u t d o o r s p o r t s, we couldn’t imagine our kids having an entire fall of no sports and saw no reason to not proceed with some sort of program.”

Lifelong Lynbrook resident and U.S. Army veteran Steve Grogan was recently inducted into the New York state Veterans Hall of Honor during a ceremony at the Tanglewood Preserve in Rockville Centre.

He was one of nine veterans honored.

Grogan serves as the historian and public information officer for American Legion Post 335, and is a Vietnam-era veteran who served in active duty for more than five years as a U.S. Army intelligence special agent, stationed at West Point. His parents were both World War II veterans, with his mother serving in the Marines and his father in the Navy. Grogan was born on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

Grogan earned a master’s degree from CW Post, and has been an active member of the Lynbrook Fire Department for 52 years, where he has served as a former captain and honorary chief, and now

works as its public information officer. He was instrumental and fought to get Nassau County to honor veterans who are also volunteer firefighters by issuing a veteran pin that is worn on their Fire Department uniforms. This led to many counties across New York to issue the same honor.

A former village trustee in Lynbrook, Grogan now serves as vice president of Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior, a nonprofit charity formed 15 years ago to help wounded warriors.

Additionally, Grogan is a retired federal agent, and served 35 years with the U.S. Justice Department. He has been married to his wife, Jane, for 48 years and they have two grown and married sons, Stephen and Brian, and two grandchildren, Abigail and Sean.

B

eing away from bedside nursing for six and a half years to have kids and raise a family came to a halt when the nursing shortage during the pandemic became a reality, and compelled me to act.

Considering becoming a new school nurse presented me with an opportune time to step up and make a difference in the community.

I recognized early on that I was now serving as a crucial part on the front lines in keeping our students, school and our community at large safe and healthy.

Although presented with challenges, such as mask wearing, social distancing, cleaning and sanitizing protocols and screenings, this job has been an enriching one. Furthermore, working in a team-oriented environment under the leadership of [the school district’s Director of Health Services and Athletics] Ed Ramirez and with the guidance of Sherrylyn Waldron, RN and Christine Van Ness, HA, this has been nothing less than fulfilling and pleasurable.

Knowing you can make a difference is rewarding, and it is my absolute joy and privilege to serve in the Baldwin School District, of which I am a proud resident.

A

t the beginning of the pandemic, we were all nervous and scared. I had never seen anything like this in my 20-plus years as a respiratory therapist.

In the first months, I had 28 residents with Covid under my care, and the center had about 100 overall.

We were all fully equipped with PPE. We had masks, face shields and haz-mat suits, and we sectioned off a part of the center solely for those who had Covid.

It almost felt like going to war, where we would suit up and do the best we could for our patients. And we were working with a lot of disposable equipment that we had to constantly open and dispose of to make sure things were safe and sanitary.

I was very proud of my team for helping our patients through this. It was physically and mentally challenging, but we made it to the point where we’ve been Covid-free for the past seven months.

It’s been hard on our residents because seniors are among the most susceptible to Covid, so they couldn’t have any visitors, and they couldn’t really leave their rooms. But we wanted to occupy them so that they weren’t just stuck watching TV and getting more and more worried.

We had activities every day in the hallways that they could join from their doors. We were like a well-oiled machine, doing everything we could for our patients.

M

y mother, Mary Curatolo, has always been a great influence on my life. She always told me that in life, it is important to give back.

My mom lives with us now, and she still reminds me about giving back.

I had been involved with charity all of my adult life. But by the time I had my second child, I was out of things. I decided to get back, and three years ago, I became president of the Kiwanis Club of Long Beach. But as of this year, I am now secretary of the club.

This fall, we just completed a drive in which we collected $2,000, and we were able to supply 27 Long Beach school children — 24 in grades kindergarten to five and the others in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades — with loads of school supplies.

We were able to supply the kids with binders, books, crayons, pencils and pens. We worked with the school social workers and asked them what the kids needed. We only bought the items they told us the kids needed. These are kids who are economically disadvantaged, and some are homeless. We have been doing this program for three years now, and this has been our most successful year in terms of fundraising.

There’s always a need for kids to have supplies, and I am sure we will do it next year too. We at Kiwanis are always busy. We are already planning food drives for the Long Beach soup kitchen. Because of Covid this year, we will be setting up food boxes outside of supermarkets, asking people to donate.

he task of running the operations for the 9-11 EMS and emergency management is challenge in itself, but during Covid-19, it was breaking new ground.

With more than 40 years of experience in these two fields, I have never been busier. I had to scramble to find personal protective equipment and other supplies for our staff from many sources, modify existing plans for the expansion of a designated isolation area large enough to accommodate the surge of Covid-positive or suspected for our facility.

We set up tents for a front triage and screening area, created a system for education and dissemination of the information we had on Covid, dealt with the decontamination issues for the Emergency Department and the EMS units, mitigated efforts to prevent the spread of the virus in the hospital, modified several areas of the facility to increase the number of intensive care unit and medical beds and also modified our mass fatality management plan to accommodate the increasing number of decedents and the proper transfer to funeral directors or medical examiners.

I had to participate in five daily conference calls with related agency partners, such as the New York City Emergency Management Office, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the Greater New York Hospital Association, the Department of Health, the Brooklyn Coalition for Emergency Management and for the Network of our sister facilities.

Former East Rockaway resident Gus Markides, 81

Longtime East Rockaway resident Gus Markides died suddenly on Oct. 26. He was 81.

Markides was happiest surrounded by family, whom he loved above all else. As a husband, father, grandfather and brother, his wisdom, encouragement and support for his loved ones was unparalleled.

Always at the head of the table, he was also the leader of the family, literally and spiritually. He so enjoyed telling his stories and jokes surrounded by eager listeners.

He shared his life with his loved ones, and his death leaves them with a hole in their hearts and an empty chair at the table. His loved ones said he will always remain in their hearts and he will be missed.

From his roots in Far Rockaway, Queens, to his home in East Rockaway, to his cabin in the Catskills, it was always family first and foremost. But he made

time for other important endeavors in his life, proudly serving in the New York City Auxiliary Police for 50 years, where he was recently promoted to inspector. He also served as commander of his local American Legion chapter, and was a proud flagcarrying veteran of the U.S. Army.

Markides loved his old cars and it seemed like he attended just about every car show he could.

He was a friend and mentor to many, and was widely respected and admired.

Markides was the patriarch of the family, and he is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marilyn; his two children, Mitchell (Rosa) and Michelle (Eric); his five grandchildren, Alessandra (Charlie), Gabriella, Matthew, Hannah and Jason, all of whom he adored in turn and doted on with pride and admiration; and his sisters, Catherine (Angelo) and Georgia.

Best Market to close for months amid transition to Lidl

The East Rockaway Best Market store will close later this month through early April as it is renovated into a Lidl supermarket.

Lidl, a German-based supermarket chain, acquired 27 Best Market locations in New York and New Jersey in 2018.

“It was supposed to happen over the summer, but they’ve been delayed,” East Rockaway Mayor Bruno Romano said, adding that the coronavirus caused the postponement. “They’re just going to shutdown and redo the whole store.”

Romano said he was uncertain of the exact date that the store would close or how many employees would be kept.

Calls to the store and its corporate office were not returned at press time Tuesday.

Best Market opened to much fanfare in October 2016 as many East Rockaway residents rejoiced at not having to cross into Oceanside to go grocery shopping.

Though he said the store closing for several months could have a negative impact on East Rockaway, Romano said, he was excited for it to reopen as Lidl.

“It’s going to shift everybody into Oceanside for shopping, but we’ve been through it before when Pathmark was out, so they came back,” he said, referring to Best Market replacing the former Pathmark store that occupied the building at 492 E. Atlantic Ave. “It’s going to be a few months of inconvenience.”

The plan will send treated effluent, or wastewater, from the Bay Park Water Reclamation Facility to an ocean outfall pipe at the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant in Wantagh, using a 100- year-old aqueduct beneath Sunrise Highway. The goal of the project is to spark the ecological recovery of the degraded Western Bays by reducing nitrogen released there and into Reynolds Channel each year, and create conditions for a rapid rebound of ecosystem renewal.

“From damaged ecosystems to problems with shoreline resiliency, Long Island’s coastal environment has suffered immensely from decades of nitrogen pollution and it must be stopped,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement.. “Along with our local partners, New York has worked tirelessly to address this ecological threat through the innovative Bay Park Conveyance Project and the selection of a designbuild contractor is an important step in advancing this critical project and getting it done faster and cheaper.”

Design-build is a cost-saving procurement approach that incentivizes the private sector to accelerate the completion of

large-scale infrastructure projects. By using this approach, the project will support the ecological recovery of the Western Bays at a substantially lower cost and shorter construction schedule than other options, officials said, which would have cost more than $600 million and taken nearly a decade to construct. The project, which will be constructed in under three years, will reduce 19 billion gallons of treated wastewater and more than 95 percent of the nitrogen loading to Reynolds Channel and the Western Bays each year.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation will manage the design-build contract, and the Nassau County Department of Public Works will own and operate the new facilities.

“For decades the Western Bays have been poisoned by effluent from the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant,” State Sen. Todd Kaminsky said. “ . . . This is the beginning of the resurgence of a vital waterway that will lead to a better economy and a more resilient South Shore.”

The Nassau County Legislature is set to vote on the contract on Nov. 23, and then it must go through a series of reviews from the county comptroller, country control board and County Executive Laura Curran.

News brief Fire district plans to aid Wounded Warriors For the past 15 years, Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior have supported wounded warriors. In addition, Nassau County firefighters, including members of the five fire departments in the Fourth Battalion Fire District — which includes Malverne, Lakeview, Lynbrook, East Rockaway and Rockville Centre — travel down the east coast to military hospitals and rehab units to bring Christmas and holiday cheer to these wounded men and women and their children.

Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior is a nonprofit that is not affiliated with the national Wounded Warrior Project. This year, the firefighters learned that the Wounded Warrior Battalion at Fort Belvoir, Va., one of the stops the firefighters make each year, needs help in stocking their food pantry, and the firefighters of the Fourth Battalion Fire Departments are helping in that effort.

Every firehouse in this fire district is involved in accepting non-perishable food items for this cause from the general public. People who wish to help can drop the food items off at any firehouse in the five communities on two Sunday mornings, Nov. 15 and Nov. 22. In addition, there will be a final drop-off held at the Lynbrook Fire Department headquarters, at Wright Avenue off Merrick Road on Nov. 29, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The caravan of fire vehicles to deliver the food items will leave for Fort Belvoir from Lynbrook Fire headquarters on the morning of Dec. 4.

Q. I’m buying a sunroom for my breakfast room on the back of my split-level house, about 8 feet off the ground. I’m being told by the contractor that I need an architect and sealed plans. Since it’s basically a kit of parts that will go on my existing deck, why do I need this? It seems like a lot of extra expense the sunroom people didn’t tell me about. If I already have a permit for the deck, it should be Ask The allowed, right? I haven’t bought the sunroom yet. I’m Architect just trying to be sure I know the whole story before I do this, probably by spring, when the weather is better for construction. Any advice would be helpful.

A. Do things once, the best way. A deck isn’t habitable, but a sunroom is, onte eeper and a permit is required.

Plans have to show structural support, energy and building code compliance. Rain, moisture and ice are your primary concerns.

You need the whole story without the sales part.

Just like any purchase, issues you might not expect are still important, like finding out what kind of oil to add to your snow blower before the engine seizes or that windows without factory tinting can allow ultra-violet sunlight rays to fade your carpet. As an architect for a largely popular sunroom manufacturer in the 1980s and ’90s, I experienced many issues with their construction.

Pre-engineered panel systems are designed by the company, hopefully by engineers, and should come with plans, from the manufacturer, that can be sealed and signed by their in-house engineer. If not, plans may need to be drawn from scratch by an architect or engineer that you hire so those plans can be integrated with your house. Integrated means that the company generally just sells you a product and doesn’t necessarily give any indication of how to support the unit or how to attach the unit system to your house so that it won’t leak or move.

This is the general failing of the system, since, as I experienced with most of the installations, the part I could detail was free of leaking or movement, but the units themselves leaked nearly every time.

We could detail how the edges of the unit could be sealed and redundantly weather-stripped and flashed, but the frames around the glass and wall edges would unseal and leak. I even met with the corporate president/owner and identified the specific problems. Promises to correct leak issues were made but not kept, and eventually I gave up.

I looked at a two-year-old system while discussing other work for a home recently. The owner described the back-and-forth misery he and his family were experiencing with their sunroom and the company. Even 25 years after I gave up, the same company is still doing things the same way.

You need a detail-oriented architect and installer, even if you think you don’t. The cost of doing things twice is much greater. Good luck.

urrounded by thousands of adoring supporters, many sporting red MAGA caps, President Trump sauntered into a victory rally in Cincinnati on Dec. 1, 2016, three and a half weeks after his election, and laid out the Trump Doctrine.

“You hear a lot of talk about how we’re becoming a globalized world,” he bellowed to the chanting and screaming crowd, “but the relationships people value in this country are local: family, city, state, country.

They’re local.

There’s no global anthem, no global currency, no certifiSCoTT cate of global citiBRinTon zenship. We pledge allegiance to one flag, and that flag is the American flag.”

So ends “A Towering Task: The Story of the Peace Corps,” a 2019 documentary directed, edited and produced by Alana DeJoseph, who served as a small enterprise development Peace Corps volunteer in a tiny village in Mali, West Africa, from 1992 to 1994. The film, with historical footage and interviews with former and current volunteers and world leaders, most notably former President Jimmy Carter, tells the nearly 60-year history of the federal agency devoted to fostering world peace.

described as her “baby,” only weeks before Trump lost his re-election bid. It was a nervous time for many. Would the United States again elect an unabashed nationalist as president and continue on its lonely path toward global disengagement, closing borders, frayed alliances and the shredding of hard-fought international treaties, or would it choose another path, one of reengagement — one that seeks to build friendships rather than divide and conquer?

This was the question with which DeJoseph chose to end “A Towering Task,” The answer would, potentially, determine the Peace Corps’ future.

I was particularly interested in the film because I served in Peace Corps, in Bulgaria, from 1991 to 1993. I was among the first two dozen volunteers — and Americans, period — to enter the country after the fall of communism only a year earlier. It was a time of great trepidation — many wondered whether democracy would take hold for good in Eastern Europe after mass protests had toppled one hardline regime after another — and a time of great hope — millions of Eastern Europeans cheered the opening of the former Soviet bloc to the West.

As an American who wore jeans and sweatshirts and spoke with a New York accent, I was something of a local celebrity in Veliko Turnovo, the ancient city in cen-

tral Bulgaria where I served. I cannot express in words the sense of optimism I felt at the time. You believed, if only for a short time, that world peace was perhaps at hand.

As one of the globalists whom Trump has decried for the past four-plus years, I feared his presidency, and I wasn’t unwarranted in my concern. In June 2017, Trump withdrew from the 2015 Paris Agreement to limit greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Then, in 2018, he backed out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, known formally as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, signed by Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States — to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear bomb, at least for the foreseeable future. I could go on, but this column isn’t about Trump. It’s about “A Towering Task.”

As “A Towering Task” makes clear, each Peace Corps volunteer is an ambassador of goodwill, a friendly face who becomes deeply embedded in the local society and culture, and whose contributions become the stuff of local conversation for years to follow.

Creating the Peace Corps in the 1960s was indeed a monumental undertaking by President John F. Kennedy and the agency’s first director, Sargent Shriver — Kennedy’s brother-in-law and the father of broadcaster Maria Shriver. The film, narrated by Academy Award-nominated actress Annette Bening, does a masterful job of telling the early story of the Peace Corps and the political fray that its formation stirred, after which it meticulously chronicles the agency’s history, decade by decade, with panoramic footage from Peace Corps countries around the globe, showing both natural wonders and human suffering.

Dog days of the 2020 pandemic election

s we go to press, Major and Champ are heading to the White House. Apparently, Joe and Jill Biden will be moving in, too, on Inauguration Day, but the big news is that dogs are back in the people’s house. This dog whistle is sweet: the presence of the Bidens’ two German shepherds speaks to the humanity of their owners.

Also at press time, the current occupant of the White House has not yet conceded RAndi the election and is kReiSS launching lawsuits like North Korean missiles. They seem just as likely to plummet into oblivion.

This traumatic election of 2020 unfolds in the midst of a catastrophic pandemic, with more than 100,000 people a day getting infected with Covid-19. The entire election experience, not to mention the past four years, has been an unraveling of norms.

The pollsters suggesting a big “blue wave” couldn’t have been more wrong.

was flat and we nearly sailed over the edge.

There was no such wave. It seems as if every person who voted for President Trump last time voted for him again. His supporters are still believers, which speaks to our great national divide.

The voting went smoothly, but the counting has been excruciatingly slow. At press time, Joe Biden is the president-elect, but there are recounts ahead for Senate seats. We will have a new government in a couple of months. Probably.

In this time of uncertainty, what can we know and count on for sure, no matter what? What is your life preserver? With my kids far away, my grandkids disembodied voices on the phone and friends scattered to their personal pods, my lifesaver has been my dog, Lillybee. I know she is my husband’s comfort as well. That is not to take away from us as a couple, but Lillybee is another category of loving companion.

As it turns out, dogs can save us from ourselves, from the pain of isolation and the tension of being inside and outside bubbles. I’m sure you know as many people as I do who’ve become first-time dog

owners since the onset of the pandemic.

According to what I’ve read, the demand for dogs far exceeds the supply.

Animal shelters, private breeders and pet stores are reporting unprecedented demand. People are hiring people to fly new puppies to them. Some shelters are reporting dozens of applications for individual dogs. Some breeders are reporting waiting lists well into 2021.

Dogs fill the void created by lost jobs and lost school days and lost opportunities to socialize. As people realize the pandemic won’t be over anytime soon, they’re changing travel and spending habits. They’re longing for emotional connection, and that’s where dogs do what they have always done: give special meaning to life. All the clichés of unconditional love and friendship are true.

Of course, shelter directors are hoping that people remain as faithful to their dogs as the dogs are to them. When the pandemic ends and political life calms down and people go back to school and work, dogs will still need their people for food and companionship and love.

great life. Everyone is home! There’s always someone to play with. There will be a big adjustment for dogs and humans alike when pandemic restrictions are lifted.

I’ve noticed that Lillybee is increasingly attached, following us from room to room, and also more anxious, picking up on our vibes. I took her to the puppy park yesterday and, like a toddler in preschool, she sat behind my legs and wouldn’t play with the other kids. When we get our mojo back, I expect she will, too.

It’s a sign of our national health and well-being that Major and Champ will be moving in to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. On a personal note, I’m relieved that they’ll be bringing Joe and Jill.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Mary Oliver, author of the collection “Dog Songs,” wrote this tribute: Because of the dog’s joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?

e offer sincere congratulations to former Vice President Joe Biden for winning the presidency last week, at 77, the oldest man ever elected to the nation’s highest office. With him, U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris was elected the first woman — and the first Black and Indian American — vice president. The vote totals were also historic: Biden received the most votes of any presidential candidate ever, over 75 million. President Trump had the second-most, with over 71 million.

At press time Monday, the Associated Press had called all but two states — Georgia and North Carolina. Biden led Trump in Georgia, and North Carolina was expected to go to Trump. Biden had 290 Electoral College votes, 20 more than are needed to win the presidency. If he were to win Georgia, he would extend his total to 306, a clear mandate.

Three honks for President-elect Biden

Biden should feel a deep sense of pride in the race that he ran. He conducted a clean campaign that respected the health and safety of voters during the coronavirus pandemic. When Trump attempted to stir controversy during the first chaotic presidential debate on Sept. 30 by raising questions about Biden’s son Hunter — while the former vice president was speaking about his dead son, Beau — he did not take the bait. He did not engage Trump in the ugly war of words that the president sought.

Biden could easily have made hay about nepotism in the Trump administration.

After all, Trump gave top jobs to his daughter, Ivanka, and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, both of whom have continued to engage in their daily business activities while working at the White House, creating any number of potential conflicts of interest. For that matter, the Trump Organization has carried on its dealings even

Early voting, a victory for the people

ew York state held its first early vote in 2019, and voter participation shot up nearly 45 percent statewide compared with 2015, according to Vote Early New York. Last year, Nassau County, which had double the required number of early-voting sites, had the highest early-voting turnout in the state. In all, some 256,251 people voted early in New York.

This year, an astonishing total of at least 2.2 million New Yorkers cast early ballots over the course of nine days, from Oct. 24 to Nov. 1, according to the Associated Press. At the same time, 1.1 million sent in absentee ballots. Before Election Day, some 3.3 million people had already voted in New York.

There’s no doubt that the contentious nature of this historic presidential race drove people to vote, either early at the polls, by absentee ballot or in person on Election Day. But without early and absentee voting, we have to wonder whether turnout would have been as high as it was.

We doubt it.

Clearly, New York is on to something with early and absentee voting. That’s why we must not only continue to offer these options in the future, but also expand on them. Nassau County had 15 early-voting sites this year, while Suffolk had 12. Only one of the Nassau sites was on the North Shore, in Roslyn Heights. Clearly, the North Shore needs more sites — but it should not receive them at the expense of

while the president has been in office.

Yes, Biden could have made much of all that, escalating the rhetoric in what could have been a terrible tit-for-tat game with the president. But he didn’t. He left Trump’s kids alone, while proudly defending his own.

In doing so, Biden showed his fundamental decency, his respect for the moral codes that we expect a president to abide by. He campaigned hard, but he never lost his sense of self-respect by engaging in the kind of scorched-earth tactics that got Trump elected in 2016. Biden ran a principled campaign, most notably in his socially distanced approach to reaching people through Zoom sessions and car rallies — and he always wore a mask. In other words, Biden set an example for all of us to follow.

And that, in part, is why he is our president-elect.

Too many people had to wait too long to vote, which some would argue is a form of voter suppression. You simply shouldn’t have to wait an hour to vote, let alone three hours or longer. The Nassau County Board of Elections should begin planning additional sites.

That would require funding, because elections require paid poll workers. Coming by such funding will not be easy if the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic drags on. Nonetheless, the county should be taking a hard look at expanding early voting — if not now, then in the near future.

Scene 2: Same food store, same day. A customer ahead of me was checking out, paying the cashier. I assumed my spot, six feet behind, on the assigned, socially distanced color blob on the floor. A shopping cart coming from my left eriC C. appeared in front LaSt of me and assumed the position between me and the customer checking out.

“Excuse me,” I said, intentionally calm and non-threatening. The customer looked at me, his mask in the below-the-chin position. I told him I was waiting on line and asked that he not cut in front of me. He

wasn’t pleased, called me “an ass,” but went to the next checkout line.

“May I also ask you to wear your mask the right way?” I said, still calm, nonthreatening, non-judgmental.

“No, I won’t. I won’t be an ass like you.”

I asked, “Out of curiosity, why do you feel so strongly about not wearing the mask?”

Now threatening, he yelled, “Because you’re an ass, and you better not ask again or we’ll really have a problem! Are you looking for a problem?”

No, I wasn’t looking for a problem. I was looking for chicken. But I felt an obligation to say something when my safety, and that of those around me, was threatened.

After paying for my groceries, while my fellow shopper (still with mask concealing only his Adam’s apple) finished checking out, I spoke with the store managers. I told them what happened at the butcher counter and in the checkout line. I told them that although I was a regular customer, I’d find it hard to return to a store where the safety of cus-

tomers and staff is put in jeopardy by fellow customers and staff.

The managers lamented their plight, talking about the difficulty they faced enforcing the mask rules and the verbal, and sometimes physical, threats they and their employees have had to endure. They apologized for the behavior of their butcher, qualified by, “The staff is almost always good about masking.” And they spoke of the difficulty of enforcing mask rules among shoppers, and the awful choice their cashiers have to make regularly: risk a confrontation with a mask-deficient customer, or risk exposure to the coronavirus.

I expressed my understanding of the awful situation store owners and employees are in, a situation they never sought.

But I also expressed my passion about the issue. Because I’m a customer, a citizen, a husband, a parent. And I’m a physician, practicing primary care internal medicine in this community for over 30 years. We’ve lost patients to Covid-19,

t’s simple. It’s not political.

It’s caring for others. It’s setting an example.

LetterS ous communities, honest government and a cleaner environment. The road ahead will be tough, but we’ll get through it together.

Now is a time to come together, heal divisions and do the hard work to make real change for our communities and families.

Water takeover should be rejected To the Editor: Liberty Utilities and New york American Water signed an agreement for Liberty to purchase American Water for a whopping $608 million. Why, you may ask, would anyone pay $608 million for a water system, 40 percent of which was sold for $71 million a little over eight years ago? Because NyAW gifted its shareholders with a 204 percent return on its investment — while charging its customers 10 times more than what our neighbors with municipal water pay.

We urge NyAW ratepayers to join us in urging the Public Service Commission to reject this private acquisition and, instead, to support a public takeover of our most basic necessity — the water that runs freely under our feet. Water is a basic human right, one that should have local control, with local accountability.

Knowing that there are plans under way to take back the water that is rightfully ours, Governor Cuomo gave the PSC until April 1 to distinguish between utility and customerowned assets if the state were to revoke American Water’s license to operate in New york

some of whom we’ve known for most of those three decades. We’ve cared for many others who’ve recovered, some of whom are still struggling with the lingering effects of the virus.

What have we become? We threaten those who request that others in our presence follow simple guidance that could save another’s life? In a pre-Covid time, had I been wearing an Islanders T-shirt and my fellow shopper, a Rangers T-shirt, would I have been threatened for my team partisanship?

It’s simple. It’s not political. It’s caring for others. It’s setting an example for others. It’s making a tiny sacrifice to potentially protect another human being. It’s pushing back against an ideology that questions science to foster political goals.

It’s following the simplest guidance there is: Treat others as you’d want to be treated yourself.

We owe one another nothing less.
