John Nuzzi Sr. has taken on so many benevolent projects across so many decades that even he can’t list them all. And while he has received several accolades through the years, he said that recently being named Elk of the Year by New York Elks Lodge No. 1 in Lynbrook topped them all.

“Many years back, I was lodge Officer of the Year,” Nuzzi said. “But Elk of the Year is the highest honor you can get as a non-officer.”

Nuzzi, 63, reached the rank of deputy district Grand Exalted Ruler for the Southeast District in 2019 — an area that includes Elks lodges in Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Hicksville, Massapequa, New Hyde Park and his home lodge, which is based in Lynbrook and additionally serves Baldwin, Franklin Square, Freeport and Hempstead.

Meanwhile, Nuzzi continued to raise funds for Camp Anchor, which provides year-round programs for special- needs children. He also manages 17 vehicles across the state that CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

Road to be named in businessman’s honor

A Lynbrook businessman will soon be recognized for his efforts to help fund improvements to a dangerous intersection in the village.

Jeffrey Greenfield will have “Greenfield Corner” named in his honor after his work on the Nassau County Planning Commission helped him secure a $3.2 million grant to make safety improvements at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Merrick Road. Greenfield is a managing partner at the NGL Group, which his late father, Martin Greenfield, brought to Lynbrook in 1966.

“When the mayor approached me for this recognition, I was very humbled by the gesture since it’s always my intent as a local business to contribute to the community in which I have had my business for 40-plus years,” he said. “I had to transverse that road four to six times a day and knew how deadly it was.”

At the April 4 village board of trustees meeting, Lynbrook Mayor Alan Beach presented and the trustees presented Greenfield with a replica of the road sign.

After the meeting, Beach said, the dedication of Greenfield Corners at Rocklyn Avenue and Merrick Road would likely happen sometime in May. Greenfield is the vice chairman of the Nassau County Planning Commission,

and was able to help secure the grant to complete the expansive roadwork, but it was an arduous journey. He said he had been pushing for improvements to the intersection for 15 years and that in one year in the early 2010s, 62 accidents were reported there.

After securing the funding for repairs, Verizon, Altice, the Long Island Power Authority, PSEG and National Grid each had to relocate their underground lines before work could begin. Then the original contractor went bankrupt, and the county had to select a new contractor to complete the project. After three years, work was finally finished last fall.

Improvements to the roads included the creation of two turning lanes southbound from Ocean onto Merrick, a left turn lane northbound on Ocean to Merrick, a right turn lane in lieu of a cutover on the corner of Ocean and Merrick, the widening of roads by removing a median, upgrades to a 15-year-old traffic signal and the addition of crosswalks.

Beach called the intersection one of the most dangerous on Long Island, and said he was grateful for Greenfield’s efforts and pleased to dedicate the new Greenfield Corner to him.

“That’s quite a task that he did there to get the money for that intersection,” Beach said. “He used his influence on the planning commission to get that done, so he definitely deserves recognition.”

A long history of Class Night continues on Herald contributor

The year was 1924, five decades before the passage of Title IX of the Education Amendments Act, which granted equality to girls in sports. The Lynbrook High School girls’ basketball team, in its infancy, approached the Lynbrook Athletic Department with a request for updated equipment. Their request was denied because “the cost of equipment was more than the general organization boasted of,” according to LHS student Anthony Perrusi in a 1929 edition of the school newspaper, The Green and Gold.

Desperate for a new way to raise funds, the girls’ basketball team had a stroke of genius: why not hold a “Class Night,” a four-grade competition comprising various categories, and collect funds from the event?

The idea was a success, and the girls’ basketball team raised enough money to fully equip their needs. The following year, with the inaugural Class Night just a distant memory of an athletic fundraiser, the school hosted a gymnastics exhibition, instead. The students, however, were not satisfied — they wanted another Class Night.

Considering fundraising was no longer a primary objective, J.J. Carter, who was the phys. ed. director, decided to rebrand Class Night 1926 as a social event for students, with the simple goal of enjoyment.

Participants were scored based on five categories: basketball, decorations, refreshments, ticket setting and cheering.

The event was held in what is now the gymnasium of the Kindergarten Center, across the street from the present-day

high school. Each grade claimed a corner of the gym to set up their decorations.

Decked out in tinsel, ribbon, wallpaper and class spirit, the room was a proud display of Class Night’s ability to bring LHS students together in fierce, yet friendly, competition.

Many agreed that the event’s success derived partly from the opportunity it provided for students, even those who did not qualify to make the varsity team, to participate in basketball; additionally, it was an entirely student-run process, with varsity basketball players taking the role of coach and officiating the games. From the start, Class Night promoted inclusion and fun for all students, and this is reflected in its success and longevity.

In 1928, with Class Night growing in size and popularity, Harry’s Shoe Shop offered an accolade for that year’s winner: a Class Night cup. That year and each year preceding, the cup has been awarded to the first-place winner and inscribed with their graduating year. The trophy remains the prize of Class Night to this day, and is displayed proudly in the office of Assistant Principal, “Master of Class Night Ceremonies”, Matthew Sarosy.

The original Class Night evolved throughout the Roaring Twenties, and in the latter years of the decade, drama became a key part of the event. Dramatic Class Night, as it was called then, was judged on four factors: posters, tickets, plays and specialties. The first ever class skits, in 1929, were eclectic and did not adhere to a single theme, as is the tradition today; they were titled “Punk,” “The Trunk from India,” “The Professor of Love,” and “The Wonder Hat.” “Here’s to Dramatic Class Night!!”

Class Night — which, in line with its vibrant nonconformity, came to be spelled “Class Nite” for some time — grew more spectacular with each passing year. And he supports Long Island sports organizations for people with disabilities.

As a non-officer, Nuzzi said he loves working in the Heritage Room of the Lynbrook lodge or creating brochures for annual events like the Flag Day and Elks memorial services, and the 9/11 lodge ceremony.

Nuzzi also is lodge chair for Elks Camp Bristol in West Monroe. Originally designed for Elks youth, the camp’s purpose has broadened to hosting veterans, children of military personnel, and any nonprofit groups that the Elks support.

His chairmanship of the yearly Elks Hoop Shoot has opened a way for children in elementary, middle and high school to compete in basketball tournaments at all levels, even national. The hoop shoot this past January had fewer entrants thanks to Covid-19, but two girls, Caroline Rogers (ages 8-9) and Blake Vuotto (ages 10-11) nonetheless made it to the state level for their age brackets.

“I followed those two children in the hoop shoot all the way up to Glens Falls and watched them compete,” Nuzzi said. “One took third, and the other took fourth.”

These many activities are in addition to Nuzzi’s life as a Freeport business owner and family man. A Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Navy, Nuzzi moved to Freeport with his wife Pat and two young sons, John Jr. and Anthony, in the mid-1980s. He founded Royal Laundry Machinery Services in the basement of their St. Marks Avenue house in 1987.

A decade later, he moved the business to its current home at 361 Atlantic Ave. while also remaining heavily

involved in the Freeport and Lynbrook communities.

“He’s always been very active with any organization he’s been involved with,” Pat said. “He put a lot of work into the hoop shoot this year. The school that they were supposed to use so the kids could shoot their hoops, because of Covid, the school didn’t want any outsiders in.”

Nuzzi was given permission to use the village’s Recreation Center by Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy.

In addition to undertaking the basketball event, the Elk of the Year honor was based on a culmination of activities, not just one aspect of service.

“John’s a good guy,” said Al Hoffman, a fellow lodge member. “He does a lot around the lodge. He does our publicity and all. I was an Elk of the Year a few years ago, and we use the past group of Elks of the Year to pick the present one each year. John deserved it.”

Nuzzi also brought in the third-highest number of new members out of the 118 Elks lodges in the state.

For every dollar the local lodge donates to the national Elks foundation, it gets back $1.75.

“We have lodge scholarships,” Nuzzi said. “We have up to seven scholarship winners receive $1,000 each year, and we sponsor an individual for four years at Hofstra. The money (invested by the national foundation) just keeps on making interest and it pays for itself.”

Amy Schnelling, the chair of the lodge’s Elk of the Year Committee, lauded Nuzzi for his efforts through the years.

“This award is one of the highest honors recognized in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks,” she said in a statement. “His commitment to our order and to the community is unparalleled. By showing ‘what Elkdom is all about,’ it is only fitting that John receive this award for all that he has done.”

Shake A Paw permitted to sell dogs once again puppies had been afflicted with serious health issues, including pneumonia, breathing problems, infections and congenital defects, James claimed. Several had parasites.

Some customers told James that certain issues were kept hidden from them while health certificates were doctored to advertise healthy dogs.

At least nine dogs sold by Shake a Paw “died soon after sale” from various ailments, according to the suit, while a number of customers paid for “hundreds of dollars of unnecessary additional goods and services” — sometimes thousands of dollars.

Several owners claimed they had to quickly take their new dogs to the vet, racking up bills they say Shake a Paw refused to reimburse.

“Shake A Paw must be held accountable for all the pain they caused countless families who bought sick puppies from their stores,” James said in a statement.

“Overwhelming evidence shows that Shake A Paw’s business practices were unconscionable and illegal. We will continue to fight to protect these puppies and New York consumers. New Yorkers deserve relief for being misled and we are determined to provide it to them.”

A NASSAU COUNTY judge ruled that Shake A Paw stores in Lynbrook and Hicksville can resume selling new dogs, ending a three-month ban amid a lawsuit brought by Attorney General Letitia James, which claimed the businesses knowingly sold sick puppies.

“The court recognized that Shake A Paw’s business was being destroyed by the reckless and unjustified demands of the attorney general to block the purchase of puppies for resale.”

Shake A Paw Vice President Marc Jacobs said his businesses have helped to satisfy more than 80,000 customers by uniting them with new dogs throughout their 28-year history, and that the state’s Department of Agriculture and Markets has consistently found its two stores to be in compliance during unannounced inspections.

“Shake A Paw only acquires puppies from licensed and lawful breeders,” Jacobs said in a statement, “and has never knowingly sold a sick puppy.

“As required by law and in accordance with the owner’s wishes, on the rare occasion when a sold puppy has taken ill, Shake A Paw has reimbursed veterinary bills up to the sales price, given a full refund, or exchanged the puppy for another.”

James’s suit described the source of Shake a Paw’s animals as puppy mills, although customers were told that the dogs were from legitimate breeders. Many of the

Choice awards celebrate those who ‘power’ community

After months of waiting, winner after winner stepped up to receive their firstever Herald Long Island Choice award during a gala event with Oscars-like proportions, but without any of the unnecessary drama.

The first-ever event — hosted by RichnerLive, presented by PSEG Long Island, and sponsored by TenantBase — took place April 5 at Heritage Club in Bethpage.

Voting had been underway since last July where readers and customers shared who they believed were Long Island’s best businesses in more than 260 categories covering everything from breweries to motorcycle dealers to chiropractor.

More than 100,000 votes were cast over five months, and both the top three finalists and the eventual winners were recognized at last week’s awards event.

Instead of leaving these decisions by a faceless group of judges, these awards are determined by the very people who make these businesses thrive — the customers.

That, at least, is according to Amy Amato, corporate relations and events executive director at RichnerLive. Herald Long Island Choice Awards is a way to show businesses how much their work is appreciated.

“We decided to do it because we understand the challenges that small businesses

“These types of events and contests helps local businesses increase their revenue.”

Heritage Club hosted a cocktail hour with an open bar and hors d’oeuvres, giving many of the finalists and their supporters a chance to mingle.

“It’s definitely nice to actually see people again,” said Joe Floria of Flo Fitness of Lynbrook. “After the last few years, I think we needed this. Plus, the cheese is great.”

Each table featured an ice sculpture centerpiece celebrating the event, while on the main stage, an acrobat contorted herself in fantastical ways.

Stuart Richner, chief executive of Richner Communications Inc., commented on how important local businesses contribution is to Long Island, and how happy he was to get the chance to celebrate them.

In the ensuing hour, business after business was named winner in a whirlwind of emotional highs. Some were so excited, they jumped up on chairs and tables in celebration. Others chose to celebrate with screams and applause.

Peggy Keane, PSEG’s interim president and chief operating officer, said she was pleased to partner with Herald Community Newspapers to celebrate businesses across Long Island.

“This event recognizes all types of businesses that are dedicated to their communities,” she added, in a statement.

Those were sentiments also shared by Bennett Washabaugh, chief executive and co-founder of TenantBase.

“It was fantastic to see so many small businesses getting out, and the people that power our community,” he said. “It’s just amazing.”

The Lynbrook baseball team has shown plenty of spunk in its first two series of the spring, but unfortunately have just one win to show for it. As a result, the Owls now face a pivotal stretch that could already determine their playoff contention.

The Owls (1-5) were hoping to ride the momentum of last year’s season-ending three-game winning streak into 2022 but were challenged immediately with a threegame series against Division, a Nassau League III semifinalist last spring. The offense hung tough against Dragon ace Mike Knapp in the opener, but eventually succumbed 6-3 on March 28.

Lynbrook was on the verge of an impressive win the next day by carrying a 10-6 lead into the sixth inning, but Division rallied and won on Knapp’s walk-off steal of home. The Dragons won 10-0 on March 31 for the sweep.

“We had an opportunity to win, and we couldn’t cash in against a real solid team,” coach Al Marrazzo lamented. “It’s a tough loss when you have them 10-6. We were up, we were feeling good, we had some great at-bats that game. It just wasn’t enough.”

The Owls recovered and got into the win column with a 13-3 thrashing of Floral Park in that three-game series opener on April 4. Anthony Macchia struck out five over five solid innings and added two hits at the plate and outfielder Sean Lengyel had three hits and three RBI. Brian Mansfield and Nate Santoli also had two hits.

“We squared up the ball really well,” Marrazzo said. “Macchia pitched really well. It was a complete game. The kids felt good about themselves.”

The Knights responded with a 12-5 win the next day and took the series by eking out a 1-0 win despite a well-pitched game

Marrazzo is hoping that continued timely pitching and hitting and an improved defense can get his team moving in the right direction.

“We have to get a couple of wins on the board,” he said. “South Side’s no joke.

They’re a great team. But anybody can be beaten. We had Division on the ropes twice. It’s just a matter of us executing on the defensive end more frequently and making the plays we have to make.”

The Biblical story of the exodus is central to the identity of Jews, but throughout history, it has also served as the expression of a yearning for freedom that is universal.

Our civilization acknowledges that slavery is terrible. We have an obligation to fight for a free world. But are we, ourselves, prepared to live a life of freedom? Are we capable of facing the difficulties we encounter precisely because we are free?

Let us acknowledge that freedom is not easy: The absence of freedom brings with it convenience, comfort. If I am a slave, I don’t need to make big decisions. All meaningful choices are made by my masters. And it would be much easier to visit a single doctor and believe in his every diagnosis, but freedom “forces” us to listen to different opinions and choose.

It’s a chilly day for the spring, but it still lifts my heart as I stretch my arms, draw a deep breath, and remember what it was like just a few short months ago when we were locked down, masked up and, well, sometimes it seemed as if this was just the way things were going to be.

Like the people of Judah at the time of the exile, we have been forced to go “underground”, as we struggled in this pandemic that came sweeping seemingly out of nowhere like the biblical plagues of Egypt, taking lives left and right, filling up our morgues and igniting yet more fighting and division as our already fractured people fought for control of the sinking ship like folks arguing over the placement of the deck chairs of the Titanic, unable to even agree on measures to

It has been said that we are what we eat, so when the late Rabbi Harold Shulweis wrote, “On Passover, Jews eat history,” he told us that the Passover holiday menu offers instruction with each bite along with a lesson on how we learn and why.

The Passover Seder recalls the Hebrew Bible’s telling of the 13th century BCE exodus from Egypt. The Seder’s foods include matzah, baked of flour, water and nothing else as the Hebrews fled ancient Egypt. Matzah, the bland, crunchy, crumbly subsistence staple, is a jarring contrast to the breads, bagels, baguettes and more that we typically enjoy and may even take for granted.

Eating matzah, also known as “Bread of Affliction,” drives home an appreciation for the amount and array of our food options and speaks to the urgency of ensuring that those who hunger get fed. Eating maror, bitter herbs or horseradish, stings the sinus with the harshness of slavery as a demand to extend freedom to all. Parsley, a sign of the arriving spring, gets dipped in salt

PROPUESTA N.º 3 (Establecimiento del fondo de reserva de capitales para mejoras y reparaciones de edificios III): SE RESUELVE que la Junta de Educación del Distrito Escolar East Rockaway Union Free, por medio del presente, tenga autorización para establecer un fondo de reserva de capitales, denominado “Fondo de reserva de capitales para mejoras y reparaciones de edificios III”, de acuerdo con las disposiciones del artículo 3651 de la Ley de Educación, con el fin de financiar futuras mejoras, renovaciones o modificaciones en todo el distrito, lo que incluye, entre otros: construcción, renovación, mejora, modificación o reemplazo de las instalaciones y propiedades del distrito, mejoras de capital relacionadas con los cambios en la inscripción futura; otras mejoras de infraestructuras y proyectos similares, y el trabajo asociado o incidental, servicios y gastos. Proposition Three: Use of the Building Renovation, Improvement, Upgrade, Equipment Capital Reserve Fund, Grounds Renovation, Improvement, and Equipment Capital Reserve Fund and Continuous Facilities Improvement Capital Reserve Fund BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Education of the Lynbrook Union Free School District be authorized to expend an amount not to exceed: $1,289,979 from the Building Renovation, Improvement, Upgrade, and Equipment Capital Reserve Fund, established on May 15, 2015; $1,500,000 from the Grounds Renovation, Improvement, and

Equipment Capital Reserve Fund established on May 15, 2018; and $1,207,897.00 from the Continuous Facilities Improvement Capital Reserve Fund established on June 9, 2020; for an aggregate total amount not to exceed $3,997,876 for the following purposes: at Marion Street School, the replacement of the turf field, the addition of field lighting, the renovation, improvement and movement of the playground, and the renovation of the cafeteria; at North Middle School, the addition of funds to the field renovation and improvement project, the addition of field lighting, the renovation of the school courtyard, and the renovation of one classroom; all at no additional cost to District taxpayers and to commence during the 2022-2023 school year; all of the foregoing to include furnishings, equipment, machinery, demolition and other work required in connection therewith, as well as preliminary costs and costs incidental thereto and to the financing thereof; provided that the costs of the components of said project may be reallocated among such components if the Board of Education shall determine that such reallocation is in the best interests of the District and no material change shall be made in the scope of the project.

Proposition Four Technology Replacement Capital Reserve Fund BE IT RESOLVED, that the Lynbrook Union Free School District’s (“District”) existing Technology Replacement Capital Reserve Fund, heretofore established on May 15, 2007 by voter authorization and extended and amended by the voters of the Lynbrook Union Free School District at the Annual District Meetings held on May 15, 2012 and on May 16, 2017, each for an additional probable term of five (5) years, which has not yet expired, in the ultimate amount of Seven Million Five Hundred Thousand dollars ($7,500,000), for the purpose of funding improvements to and replacement of the District’s technology equipment, infrastructure, machinery or apparatus necessary for the District’s operations, IS HEREBY AMENDED by extending the probable term of said Fund by an additional five (5) years through and including June 30, 2027, and increasing the Fund’s ultimate amount to Ten Million Dollars ($10,000,000); without any change, increase or alteration to the Fund’s purpose, source or annual

We just bought a house, and want to make a lot of small changes, like taking down the wall between the little kitchen and the dining area to put in an island, and making two bedrooms on the second floor. A. There are regulations for the bedroom ceiling height and insulation you must follow, or you will someday be like the several retirees I have dealt with who discovered the expensive truth: Their second-floor bedrooms fail the code requirements of an average ceiling height of 7 feet. New York state building code, which every community, includonte eeper ing New York City, follows (New York City has added restrictions), requires that the minimum height is 5 feet, and the average height is 7 feet. If you take the space width, only from the 5-foot height location and the height at the center, you can calculate average height.

I present a cross-section diagram to demonstrate compliance. Many older sellers trying to move to lower-taxed homes discover that they need to do up to $35,000 in alterations to raise roofs and add legal windows for light, ventilation and fire escape requirements as well. A few gave up, passing the problem and a price reduction on to their buyer, causing frustration.

You absolutely need permits for the “small” changes, which will end up not being so small when you realize that the wrong beams may be installed by an unqualified person who can tell you they do the same thing “all the time,” without correctly calculated and drawn plans. Most beams they install work for carrying the floor load upstairs, but don’t take into consideration the other factors, such as snow, wind and uplift loads transferred from the roof a story above. All too often I see sagging, barely detectable, wrong-sized beams when I’m meeting with potential clients. Unless there is work to be done in the area of that beam or it looks extremely undersized, I generally remain silent, because most people don’t want to hear about it, never noticed it and really do believe that any old beam will do the job, and the person with power tools knew what they were doing. Only when ceiling cracking appears do they notice. Good luck!

ussia’s brutal attack on Ukraine is being felt around the world — and now, even above it.

Russia’s top space official, Dmitry Rogozin, has tweeted that the sanctions imposed on his country by the U.S and Europe are “unacceptable.” He said that cooperation with the U.S. and it allies on the International Space Station may no longer be possible.

Rogozin added that the sanctions are intended “to kill the Russian economy, plunge JAMES our people into and bring BERNSTEIN despair our country to its knees.” Normal relations with the U.S. and Europe, he said, would only be possible with the lifting of the “illegal” sanctions — something that is highly unlikely to happen in the near future.

Rogozin, space experts have said, has a habit of popping off. But Andrew Parton, president of the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, said that the notion of Americans, Europeans and Russians working together in space — which they were doing only a few weeks ago — now “seems awkward.”

“We’re almost at war with them,” Parton said.

The Russians were pioneer partners, along with the U.S., the Europeans Space Agency, Canada and Japan, in building the ISS, the largest man-made structure ever constructed and put into space. It had to be assembled in parts, which took place between 1998 and 2000. The first section of the structure was launched in November 1998, aboard a Russian Proton rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodome.

The ISS has been circling the Earth for so long now — it became fully operational in May 2009 with a six-member crew that required two Russian Soyuz “lifeboats” to be docked there at all times — that many Earthlings have pretty much forgotten about it, or don’t think of it much. But it remains a phenomenal vehicle, traveling an eye-popping 17,500 mph at an altitude of some 248 miles above Earth.

Many have argued that the many billions of dollars spent on the ISS could have been better used on Earth. Others say that man was born to explore, and who knows what we’ll find out there one day?

And the ISS has proved valuable. To name a few of its contributions:

■ The ability to view Earth from different perspectives has given scientists a better way to find new sources of water and places to grow food.

■ Protein crystal growth experiments done aboard the station have given medical science better understanding of diseases such as cancer and muscular dystrophy.

Human bodies chang e under such circumstances, and we are now better able to understand how to cope with the challenges we will face as we further explore the cosmos.

But what if Russia quits?

The ISS could survive. Just last week, SpaceX, a private company, launched a NASA astronaut and three paying customers to the ISS. Since NASA’s space shuttle program ended in 2011, the agency has relied on Russian Soyuz spacecraft to take our astronauts to the station.

But with commercial space companies revving up, we may be able to elimi-

nate our dependence on the Russians to get us up there.

Russians help guide the ISS, and use their country’s space vehicles to boost the station to its target orbit when it tends to drift lower. These tasks can be taken over, but it will take effort by the rest of the ISS team, and more funding.

The bigger loss, of course, is that yet another tie between major world powers will have been severed. Russian and U.S. diplomats around the world have already been called home. To be sure, Russia must be punished, and punished severely, for its actions in Ukraine. But astronauts and cosmonauts are scientists, and have held themselves above the fray of politics and fraught relationships between their countries. They were able to do so on the most recent return to Earth, in March.

Astronaut Mark Vande Hei worried that he might be left behind because of U.S-Russia tensions, after spending 355 days in space. But the Russians ferried him home safely. Joe Montalbano, NASA’s program manager for the ISS, said that those aboard the station last month were “aware of what’s going on, but they still worked as a team.”

The question is, how long can we remain teammates?

Family stories help the healing

f you don’t have a sister, I urge you to get one, preferably a younger one, so you can boss her around. But in a pinch, any age will do, and life is all about pinches.

My husband recently had surgery to replace a pacemaker, an easy, relatively pain-free event, unless it’s your pacemaker, and your body being altered. My guy is stoic, but he came out of surgery with a corneal abrasion, which was inexplicable on many levels, since the procedure was for his heart. The pain RANDI was extreme and, KREISS although I’m good in a crisis, I found his distress and my helplessness terribly unsettling.

Lots of people offered to help in any way they could. The calls and notes and get-well gifts all lifted us up. But only my sister called and said she was on her way.

She had booked her flight, she was coming for five days, and that was that.

She isn’t the take-over type; that’s my job as the older sister. Once she got here, I still cooked for the three of us and

walked the dog and fetched the meds for the patient. Really, she didn’t do much, unless you count saving my sanity. We discussed important world events, like our hair, and exchanged meaningful gifts: I gave her my Dry Bar brush and she gave me her hot rollers.

Like most sibs our age, we’re the only people on Earth who shared childhood with the same parents.

Ours died in old age, at 95 and 97, so until the last few years, we took care of them together. This shared experience doesn’t imply shared memories, because we have wildly different accounts of our childhood in Cedarhurst with Mom and Dad. What we do when we’re together is mostly nothing, aside from talking or sharing companionable silence while we read or do stuff on our devices. She paints. I write. We agree on most things in the world except her dog, Moe, a.k.a.

Cujo, who is the love of her life, and the only Chihuahua who could take down a cheetah.

we tell weave the cloth that holds us together.

I remember the Thanksgiving her 3-year-old daughter decided she hated the tiny bows on her pink velvet pants and jacket. My brother-in-law, who died many years ago, called a timeout, got a scissors and snipped off every one of the dozens of tiny bows. My sister doesn’t remember this at all. I thought it was a remarkable demonstration of parental forbearance.

She also doesn’t remember that our mother assigned me to walk her to her kindergarten when I was in third grade. Every single awful day, my sister would throw herself on the ground, grab my feet and beg me not to leave her there. It didn’t take more than seven or eight years of therapy to deal with that.

One story we both remember was our mother’s “talk” with us about sex. She told us an elaborate story about what the male chicken does with the female chicken.

When I offered intelligent feedback, starting with, “So you mean when you wanted to make a baby, Dad and you…?”

“No!” she screamed. “That’s just with

My sister and I tend to like the same things: We are political allies, and support folks who are trying to keep our democracy from running aground. Of course, there are exceptions to our harmony. I love kale, and she says she would rather chew on her lawn. I suspect she eats pot pie, which to me is dead chicken in a watery grave.

She asked me if I remembered the time I was being bullied in sixth grade. I walked her to school and told her I would kiss her goodbye before we got to school so the other kids wouldn’t see. She remembered that I didn’t skip the kiss.

I don’t remember that, but I do remember that when I was making out with my boyfriend (now my husband), in the family den back in high school, she would come clomping down the stairs in her rollers and slippers and would accept a quarter to clomp back up. She says she wouldn’t have scrammed for less than 50 cents.

So, you see, while my husband healed, my sister and I passed the time with stories. She didn’t do much, unless you count just showing up. Which was everything.

Congress must preserve quality local journalism

A

free and diverse press is the backbone of a healthy and vibrant democracy. Yet social media and search engine giants like Facebook and Google are taking content from local newspapers — like this one — with little, if any, benefit to those newspapers.

But it is readers who are truly harmed

by Big Tech’s content-filtering and datacollection motives, which ultimately reduce the output of quality journalism.

All of it is simply unfair — to readers, and especially to the newspapers who serve them. Congress must take action to fix this by approving an equitable revenue model similar to what the music industry fought hard for — one that pays royalties to content owners, which ensures that more of that content can be produced in the future.

Let’s not forget the important tenets of local newspapers: ■ Quality journalism is key to sustaining civic society, and we must ensure that those who create journalistic content are compensated for their work.

■ With freedom of the press enshrined in the Constitution, it is imperative to take reasonable and meaningful steps to protect this important institution.

■ Local journalism strengthens communal ties, and provides communities with critical information.

■ The public rightfully trusts its local newspapers. One recent survey showed that nearly 75 percent of Americans have confidence in their local newspaper, compared with just over half for national net-

work and cable news. Just 17 percent trusted social media.

A bipartisan bill known as the Journalism Competition & Preservation Act is making its way through Congress. It’s sponsored by Senators Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, and John Kennedy, a Republican from Louisiana, as well as two congressmen from both sides of the aisle, David Cicilline of Rhode Island and Ken Buck of Colorado.

The bill would enable news publishers to collectively negotiate with Big Tech, driving billions of dollars of subscription and ad dollars back to the publishers who produce good journalism in the first place.

It would include an enforcement mechanism to ensure that negotiations result in payments, that such payments be evenly distributed to small local papers, and that payments reflect investments in reporters and newsrooms. It would allow market forces — not just two companies or even the government — to determine how, and for what price, news content is offered.

American news publications reach more than 135 million people each week.

Yet the revenue of these publications has dropped by more than 50 percent in recent years, fueled by mass — and often involuntary — distribution over dominant digital platforms like Facebook and Google.

Social media might claim that the redistribution of content actually helps newspapers expand their audiences. But in reality, newspapers provide must-have content for these tech platforms that help them capture visitors. Publishers deserve fair compensation for the value of that content, and it’s just not happening from this so-called audience expansion.

LETTERS Sharing age and perspective To the Editor: Randi Kreiss’s column “Where am I at 75?

Reflections from the Edge” resonated with me. I, too, am 75 and can’t believe that number. I stopped working in December 2013, and in January 2014 I launched into the next phase of my life — I went back to school. I enrolled at Nassau Community College for what was supposed to be no more than a four-year stint, planning to take one course per semester. I had the time, and wanted to enjoy the classes, unlike my undergrad and graduate days.

Due to a few hiccups along the way — my husband’s back operations, my lymphoma, selling our house and moving during the pandemic — four years turned into 8½. I kept going back, learning computer programs that really challenged me, especially the courses I survived last year in which I created my own portfolio website

Individual news publishers cannot challenge the basic terms offered by Big Tech because these platforms are too big, and smaller newspapers can’t even get a seat at the table. Because of that, Big Tech can grab as much as 70 percent of every ad dollar from news publishers while hiring zero reporters. Newspapers bear all the expense, while social media giants get all the benefit.

Facebook and Google exert their dominance over the digital marketplace by setting the rules for news publishers and determining how their work is displayed, prioritized and monetized. More than 65 percent of users don’t even click the links offered by Google that would take them to the outlets that are spending the money to create the content they’re reading.

One study showed that 57 percent of New York residents get their news from Facebook. Nearly half use Google as their primary source of news.

If Washington doesn’t intervene soon, we will continue to lose hundreds of newspapers — like this one — across the country, and right here in your hometowns. But Congress needs to know it has your support in order to act.

Our democracy depends on local media like the newspaper you hold in your hands. The idea is so important that it’s part of the First Amendment, enshrined in the Bill of Rights. But local media also depends on you.

ecently I joined the Nassau County Legislature’s majority caucus, numerous veterans groups and County Executive Bruce Blakeman to announce the creation of a program using American Rescue and Recovery Act funds to provide grants of up to $10,000 to every eligible veterans hall in the county.

At the height of the pandemic, many Veterans of Foreign Wars posts and American Legions were facing major difficulties paying rent, property taxes and mainteBILL nance on their venues. Veterans GAYLOR halls were forced by lockdowns to cancel catered events and other functions, and that took away necessary income these halls need to survive. At the time, veterans groups weren’t eligible for ARPA funds under guidance issued by the federal government. After advocating for making those organizations eligible for that federal assistance, we received notification earli-

er this year from the U.S. Treasury Department that ARPA guidelines were being expanded to encompass 501(c)(19) entities, which includes veterans facilities. The new rule took effect on April 1.

Veterans and fraternal halls are part of the very fabric of our community, and there are approximately 100 of them in Nassau County. As a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel who will always be a strong supporter of the brave men and women who have admirably served this county, I know firsthand the important role these facilities serve. With all that veterans have done and are continuing to do for our nation and communities, there never should have been a question of eligibility. I am pleased to know that our efforts proved successful, and that this program will help these veterans groups as part of their ongoing recovery from the pandemic.

I also wanted to mention a couple of other matters of significance. First, residents are reminded that the property tax grievance filing deadline that was extended by the County Legislature to give peo-

LETTERS — I learned to code! It’s been an amazing and rewarding journey, which I completed despite the comments from friends and family: “What do you need this for?”

“Are you going to get a job?” (No.) “Why are you making yourself crazy?”

I learned that I could access parts of my brain that I didn’t know existed. I learned that I really am an artist — what a relief to finally own this part of myself.

I did have people on my side — a very supportive husband and the professors who took me seriously at Nassau.

Our two kids are doing well, and our grandkids are getting poised to launch.

And yes, we, too, are “drifting to the wings of the family stage.” Despite that, or because of it, I’ve decided to “walk” at NCC’s graduation in May. My two grandsons said they would come.

Thanks, Randi, for the years of introspective columns, many of which resonated with this 75-year-old.

Second, earlier this month, the Legislature’s majority caucus and the Town of Oyster Bay initiated a collection drive to assist the people of Ukraine, and opened drop-off locations at various county and town facilities. Recently I helped load the last boxes filled with donations from generous residents to be shipped overseas.

Overall, more than 45,000 pounds of much-needed supplies, including medical items and personal hygiene products, were sent to the Port of New York and New Jersey, where they will be shipped to Poland and ultimately distributed to

Ukrainian refugees.

Finally, the State Legislature is considering legislation that would give the state control of the Nassau University Medical Center, and ultimately lead to partial or complete closure of the facility. NUMC is the only county-owned hospital in Nassau County, and has the only state-of-the-art burn center for miles around, as well as one of the best trauma centers on Long Island. The hospital serves not just residents of the East Meadow area, but also many from across the county who are under-insured, as well as students from the local colleges and many members of nearby minority communities.

This effort is nothing more than a political move by Albany that would hurt Nassau County. NUMC should be run by county residents, for county residents. It should not be a pawn in a political tug of war, and I will continue to fight to ensure that the hospital remains under the county’s control, and not bureaucrats in Albany.

They'll all wear No. 42 To the Editor: Friday marks the 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson playing his first major league baseball game for the Brooklyn Dodgers. It was a milestone for integrating the sport. It was a time when working- and middle-class men and woman of all ages, classes, races and religions commingled, rooting for Robinson and his teammates regardless of ethnic origin.

Brooklynites could ride the bus, trolley or subway to Ebbets Field to see their beloved Dodgers. Everyone could afford a bleacher or general admission seat. Hot dogs, beer and souvenirs were reasonably priced.

Just as Jackie Robinson fought racism in the 1950s, the Detroit Tigers’ Hank Greenberg had to do the same with antisemitism in his time. Robinson and Greenberg both document the long-lasting relationship between African-Americans and Jewish sports fans standing together for decades in support of one another.
