For some time now, Jack Schnirman has been mulling whether to bow out of the race for re-election to another fouryear term as Nassau County’s comptroller. Last week, he made his decision public: The beleaguered former Long Beach city manager, who was elected Nassau County
comptroller in 2017, has decided against running again this year, he announced in a letter to supporters, which was released to the media. Schnirman did not specify a reason in the letter. “It is with sincere gratitude for this incredible opportunity to serve and excited anticipation for what the future holds that I have decided not to run for reelection this year,” he wrote on Feb. 4. Since the Herald detailed
overpayments in 2018 that he and other Long Beach employees had received when they left the city’s employ, Schnirman has been hounded by Republicans calling for his resignation and sharp criticism from members of his own party, including the Nassau County district attorney, Madeline Singas, who investigated possible wrongdoing in the case.
