Molloy College Continues to earn national Honors C
ollege-bound students and their parents are always looking for an academic environment that offers the best fit for the student and the best value for their tuition dollars. Molloy has been ranked in the top three nationally in Money magazine’s “best values” listing for two consecutive years, the only college in the country to earn such an honor. Molloy’s rankings were based on a variety of factors, including graduation rates and earnings of graduates. This category was designed to “determine which schools actually add the most value,” according to the magazine. Molloy has also earned other honors, recently being ranked the #10 best value among Catholic colleges nationwide by College Values Online. A variety of academic programs have also earned top honors recently, including Molloy’s Nursing program (#1 nationally from College Factual) and the Music Therapy program (#16 in the U.S. from Thebestschools.org). The recognition comes as part of Money’s annual college rankings, which acknowledge the best of the country’s institutions of higher education in a multitude of categories. “We are dedicated to providing our students with the best possible value. If you come to Molloy, you graduate with a job in your field at a salary that’s significantly higher than average.” -Drew Bogner PH.D., President, Molloy College Investing in Student Success “We invest in student success and we challenge our students to succeed. Molloy students are committed to a value system that stresses a strong work ethic, resiliency, professionalism and leadership,” said Drew Bogner, Ph.D., President of Molloy College. “This is why they graduate, and why they get hired. We reach beyond the classroom and educate the entire person.” The College is regularly ranked in the listings of outstanding colleges from other notable organizations, including The Wall Street Journal, The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report. Those rank-
ings reference Molloy’s freshman retention rate and graduation rate, both of which are among the highest in the country. Also of note, Molloy graduates’ starting salaries have ranked among the highest in the U.S. in surveys conducted by Georgetown University, and Molloy’s residence halls were recently ranked the best in New York State by niche.com. About Molloy Molloy, one of the most affordable private colleges on Long Island, is an independent Catholic college located in Rockville Centre. Molloy was founded in 1955 by the Sisters of Saint Dominic in Amityville, NY. The College provides its approximately 4,900 undergraduate and graduate students with a variety of competitive academic programs, including liberal arts, business, education, nursing, biology, social work, new
media, speech language pathology, music therapy, theatre arts, criminal justice and many more. Molloy creates a challenging and nurturing environment for its students. In addition to its 50-plus academic programs, approximately 60 clubs and honor societies, a competitive honors program, various service and internship opportunities, and NCAA Division II athletics, there are abundant opportunities for each student not only to strive for academic excellence, but also to explore new interests and enrich our community. What’s New Molloy continues to evolve to meet the needs of its students, adding academic programs at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. In recent years, Molloy added three doctoral programs (in nursing and education) and a master’s program

in clinical mental health counseling, new MBA options (one in healthcare and one in personal financial planning), as well as a new media major and a four-year degree in nuclear medicine technology. The College also offers flexible learning options for many of its programs, so that students can take night, weekend, hybrid or online classes. Molloy recently opened the new Barbara H. Hagan Center for Nursing, which houses the College’s School of Nursing and serves Molloy’s nationally-ranked nursing programs. This follows significant additions to the Molloy campus in recent years, including a new student center (which houses the Madison Theatre) and two new residence halls. The College continues to find new ways to help its students grow, sending them out into the world with the knowledge and confidence that they can, indeed, make a difference.

Five Tips for Success at SUNY Old Westbury
T
When you dream big, anything can happen. From our intentionally small classes to the skills of our excellent faculty, everything we offer is geared to enrich your experience and prepare you to pursue your own big dream. With nearly 60 undergraduate and graduate degrees in business, education, and the arts and sciences, and among the most diverse, dynamic student bodies in the nation, we provide a solid educational foundation so you have the confidence in your own abilities to succeed at whatever you choose to undertake — to own your future.
here are many reasons students decide which school to attend. At SUNY Old Westbury this fall, more than 1,500 first year and transfer students –the largest entering class in College history -- answered our call to “Own Your Future.” An Old Westbury education is not just about being ready for a career – although students get that preparation. It’s about putting each student in a position to think critically about the world around them and their role in it, so he or she can chart their own course to the successful life they want to lead. Below are five tips offered by the team at SUNY Old Westbury on how best to succeed on campus next fall: 1. Start Early If you haven’t started preparing for the admissions process, act quickly. Your chance to secure your spot in the Class of 2022 is right around the corner. Continue to hone those essays and ensure your SAT score reports are ready for submission. 2. Keep Your Finances in Mind As a SUNY campus, Old Westbury offers students a small college environment while paying tuition and fees of about $7,700 a year. Even with that affordability available, you should be ready to file the 2018 Free Application for Federal Student Aid as soon as it becomes available in October. Be sure to list SUNY Old Westbury so that aid for which you are eligible can be appropriately applied. And, if you live in a household with income of less than $110,000, learn more about the New York State Excelsior Scholarship program, which might make free tuition a reality for you.
3. Find Your Niche SUNY Old Westbury offers nearly 50 undergraduate degree programs. Interested in STEM? Old Westbury offers programs in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry and Computer Information Sciences. Looking for a career-igniting foundation in Accounting, Marketing and more? The School of Business faculty is ready for you. Interested in health and human services? Our programs in Psychology, Sociology and Public Health are among our most successful. How about a career in the arts or in the media? Be sure to ask about our Bachelor of Fine Arts and Visual Arts: Electronic Media degrees or the journalism and broadcasting instruction in the Media and Communications program. 4. Challenge Yourself Use your experience to mold the future you want for yourself. Consider applying for the Old Westbury Honors College, conducting research alongside your professors, or exploring your career path through internships and more. 5. Get Involved Make a promise to yourself to do more than attend your classes. Join one of the 50 clubs and organizations active on campus. Become a Panther student-athlete, or support them at games. Take advantage of campus lectures, concerts, bus trips, career fairs, and more. Learn more about SUNY Old Westbury at Open House on November 11. Searching for that ‘perfect fit’
S-7
When building your college list, there are probably things that are very important to you. You want to make sure the college has the major you are considering. You want to make sure it is located in an area that is appealing to you. And, you want to make sure the college is affordable for you and your family. However, there are other items to consider when choosing the colleges that will go on your list. As you are building your college lists, make sure to check out these factors when researching colleges. Acceptance Rate Get to know your chances of being admitted. Look at the acceptance rate (percent of students who were admitted out of all of the students who applied and completed their application), as well as average GPA and test scores of the admitted students. Do you fall within in the range? If the college has a high acceptance rate and you fall within or above the averages, you are likely to be admitted. If the college has a lower acceptance rate and you fall within the average, there is a possibility you will be admitted, but not necessarily. Freshman Retention Rate This rate tells us how many students return after their freshman year. A high rate usually indicates students are satisfied with their experience. If the institution has a low retention rate, it may be worth asking why students are not returning. Graduation Rate How many students graduate in four-
years? How many students graduate in six years? While freshman retention rates may be high, graduation rates could be low. If graduation rates are low, ask why? Course Availability Many students take more than four years to graduate. Sometimes the reason is because students cannot register for the classes they need to graduate. Ask the institution if it is possible to graduate in four years. Students may also want to ask if it is difficult to register for the classes they need each semester/quarter. Sometimes classes required for certain majors might only be offered once a year. Academic Support Many students need some sort of academic support when in college. Many colleges offer freshman experience courses and offer resources to help students transition to college, such as classes on note taking, studying, and time management. Some students may need tutoring. Check out the academic support resources available to students and make sure they offer the things you will need. Campus Safety By law, all colleges and universities must have their crime statistics available for anyone who wants to see them. Campus tour guides typically cover campus safety features on campus, such as lighting, emergency phones, and campus escorts. However, the in depth crime statistics will give you a good idea about campus safety.
The college search process is a journey of self-discovery. Even if your student has dreamed of going to a certain school throughout their school years, not checking out other options can only do you a disservice. Surrounding Community The college campus may be a serene place, but outside the college grounds, it may feel like a different world. Research the surrounding area by looking at maps and checking the city/town crime statistics. Students will need to leave campus during the time in college — will you feel comfortable leaving campus? Does the surrounding community have everything you need? Campus Housing Tour guides typically show the nicest residence halls on campus tours. However, it may not be the residence hall you will be placed in
when housing assignments are made during the summer. Learn about all of the housing options and learn about the places you would like to live. This can work to a student’s benefit when filling out the housing application because they may allow you to list your preferred residence hall. In addition, learn about housing availability for upperclassmen. Some colleges can guarantee housing all four years, while others may only be able to guarantee housing for the first year.

MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY:
Learning Transformed Nestled along New Jersey’s coastline, just one hour from New York City and Philadelphia, you’ll find a warm, friendly atmosphere and experience the historic architecture mingled among new academic buildings and residence halls that students are drawn to. From top facilities to the engaged faculty, it’s evident that Monmouth University takes pride in preparing students to succeed in life. At Monmouth, transformative learning does not just take place in a lecture hall but through a variety of ways, some experiential, technological, collaborative and innovative.
Collaboration Beyond the Classroom The University is committed to learning experiences that are high-impact, immersive and extend beyond the classroom. Research opportunities are a transformative way for qualified students, in any major, to work one-on-one with faculty on a wide variety of topics and to nurture the student’s intellectual and career passions. Employers want to see how job candidates think and function, analytically and creatively. “Our students are gaining experience that serves as the perfect bridge from college to career — they make a real impression,” said Dr. Kathryn Kloby, vice provost for transformative learning. Arturo Romua '13 attended Monmouth for its marine and environmental biology and policy major. Since then, he has taken what he learned in the classroom and from research projects, to benefit a larger learning experience.
"What stands out the most would be my research in the Bahamas," Arturo said. "I took a Tropical Island Ecology course as my Experiential Education class, and for two weeks, I was with 19 other students examining coral reef and mangrove ecosystems. We snorkeled almost daily and got to experience sustainable living."
Partnerships with Industry Leaders Monmouth University also has established networks of professionals for each of its schools, who serve in an advisory capacity. These councils help to advance distinctive curricula and degree programs and are an essential part of the fabric of the University. “We want to ensure our students are intellectually challenged and that our graduates are fully prepared for life after Monmouth — personally and professionally said Provost Laura Moriarty. “Our advisory councils are helping us to train students with skill sets that are in demand,” she said. “And it is not just students’ technical skills we are developing,” said Moriarty. “Preparing students for the workforce also requires mastering skills such as leadership.” Council members also support Monmouth’s students by talking to them about dressing for success, advising on résumé writing and appropriate social media skills, and instilling the value of teamwork.
Focused on Real-World Experience At Monmouth University, students gain hands-on experience working in and around New York City and Philadelphia. In fact, 78 percent of Monmouth students have completed a practicum,
internship, co-op, or similar "real-world" experience by their senior year — that’s more than 30 percentage points above the national average at comparable institutions. For Monmouth alumni Thomas Beaufort ’15 and Amy Rosenzweig ’17, internships were key. Thomas turned his internship into a full-time position and is currently working in digital marketing for JPMorgan Chase. Amy earned an international business degree at Monmouth University’s Leon Hess Business School following an internship with De Lage Landen, an international finance firm. Both credit their internships in helping them gain experience and open the door to great job opportunities.
On a Mission to Make a Difference Through Monmouth’s alternative break program students can use spring and winter break time to give back — in the next town or across the globe. From helping communities in Sea Bright, NJ recover from Superstorm Sandy to building a new school in Guatamala, Monmouth provides unique opportunities for students to help others while learning more about the world around them. From first-year advising to career services, and experiential education, Monmouth helps students plan ahead from the very first day. Students, in turn, gain valuable hands-on experience that has led more than 48,000 alumni to successful careers throughout the country and around the world.

Where dreams ignite
I remember applying to James Madison University like it was yesterday. While there are plenty of schooling options in New York state, I found myself drawn to the purple and gold essence that is Harrisonburg, Virginia. Originally from Suffolk County on Long Island, I was not the only one looking for an out-of-state option for undergrad. It’s natural for adolescents to want to see something new and JMU is an outstanding out-of-state option. With over 100 major and minor areas to choose from and 20,000 undergraduate students, the campus is large enough to allow students to explore new horizons, but close-knit enough to offer a special community feel. Nestled in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, JMU embodies a spirit like no other. On football game day, you can find explosions of purple and gold streamers flying through the air, and smiles gracing Dukes’ faces in Bridgeforth Stadium. This undeniable glow is here every day.

Travelling to JMU is no sweat. While cars aren’t allowed for freshmen, there are convenient bus services for major breaks like Thanksgiving and Christmas. Other options include Zim Ride — an online ride share message forum that’s easy to use — along with Zip Car and several other bus services. We’re only 20 minutes from Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport and 45 minutes away from an Amtrak hub.
‘From the Empire State to the Friendly City, my journey has been unique and irreplaceable.’ The best way to get around, for me, has been JMU Rides Facebook page, where fellow Dukes offer rides to a plethora of destinations. All in all, you’re in good hands here. Plus, when you can bring a car down here, it’s a straight shot on I-81. As my time at JMU is coming to a close and I get fitted for my cap and gown, I can’t help but reflect on my time as a Duke. I am reminded why I chose JMU, and why I’ll be grateful that I did every day. From the Empire State to the Friendly City, my journey has been unique and irreplaceable.

How to get admitted
Breaking down the steps, from application to interview
What's the formula for college admission again? High school activities + public service (grades x ACT or SAT scores)? The truth is, there isn't a college admission calculator out there. And that's a good thing. Colleges and universities don't just see the student as a set of admissions criteria, they look at the whole package — leadership qualities, service to the community, what you say about yourself in your personal essay and what others think about you in your letters of recommendation. So what's in your admission tool kit? Read on to get the scoop on the college admissions process. Read the Admission Requirements Narrowed down your top college choices? Even think you've decided on an undergraduate major? Not too fast. Before you submit your college application, read over the requirements specific to the university and program you're interested in. High-demand programs can fill up early. Plus, applying for college early can mean more scholarship or financial aid money for you — and a less-stressful senior year once you've been accepted.

Write a Great Admission Essay Why does an admission counselor care what you think the best invention of all time is? Or what you'd do if you could travel back in time? They're not looking for the "right" answer; they're looking for an answer that tells them something about you. The best advice for writing college admission essays (beside paying close attention to spelling and grammar) is to be honest and sincere. What topic do you know better than yourself? Write an Activities Resume Your academic transcript will tell colleges what you do in class. But grades aren't the whole story. A one-page outline of your high school activities gives colleges and universities another way to get to know you. Include student organizations, sports, volunteer work or involvement in your place of worship. What specific activity you do is not as important as the leadership and commitment it shows.

The beginning stages of planning your post-graduation future are often daunting, especially if you don’t know how to start. By considering all aspects of preparation — including financial, academic, and extracurricular concerns — you will be well-equipped to put together a strong application. Visiting campus can be an exciting step in choosing a college. Seeing a school from so many different angles — from professors to food to facilities to —will give the prospective student a feel for whether or not it’s a place where you can be happy, in and out of the classroom.
A first look
College readiness quick guide
Checking out the campus by attending an open house is a valuable step finding the best fit By Jessica Velasco When it comes to the college search, visiting colleges is necessary to get a real feel for the campus. Students have a few choices when visiting colleges, including the big open houses. Open houses are typically big events for prospective students that happen once or twice a year. Open houses have their advantages and disadvantages that students and parents should consider before making plans to visit campus. Here are some things you may experience when attending an open house for prospective students: Open houses will look a little different depending on the college, but they typically will include similar features. Prospective students can expect to take a campus tour and have opportunities to hear from professors, staff, and current students. There may also be information sessions about campus resources, student activities, and specific academic programs. Many colleges will have the schedule of the day available online so students will know what to expect. The college will be “rolling out the red carpet.” The college will be doing everything they can to make the college attractive. The campus will be well manicured. The lawns will be freshly mowed and the gardens will look fresh and clean. If there is construction on campus, they may stop on the day of the event so that it doesn’t interrupt the program. Parking will probably be easy on the day of an open house. This will be very different than what students can expect when attending the college. On many college campuses, there are more students and staff then there are parking spots. Most people on campus will be very welcoming and available to answer questions from prospective students and their families. Visiting during non-open house days will probably not be as easy to meet with everyone you want to talk to because they probably have other things they need to do, such as teaching classes. Current students will probably participate in open houses. However, the students selected to speak at the event will probably be hand-selected by the people in charge, and possibly prepped on how to answer certain
Plan ahead to attain your desired result
questions. The students who usually participate are campus leaders and students who love the college. The food will be great on the day of an open house. The menu for the day will probably be selected to show off the best options or student favorites. There will be a lot of prospective students on campus, making it a great opportunity to meet future classmates. This is especially helpful for students considering colleges where they may not know anyone. Connections made at the open house could turn into future friends and roommates. There will be a lot of information packed into the day. The day will be carefully designed, and sometimes scripted, to ensure prospective students learn and see most everything they need to know and want to see. Final thoughts on open houses Open houses include almost everything prospective students and their families need and want when visiting colleges. The day will be scripted and almost everyone who participates will be hand selected because they are good representations of what the college wants to present. Many open houses happen on weekends, so prospective students may not get to experience an actual school day or sit-in on a class. While not everything may be an authentic representation of what a day on campus might be like, students should be able to get a feel for the personality of the college. In addition, most students will be able to see everything and talk to everyone they want when attending an open house. There are advantages and disadvantages to open houses, just like there are for individual visits. Before making plans to visit the colleges you are considering, ask yourself what is the most important when visiting: a carefully planned out day for hundreds of students that allows you to see almost everything or an individual visit that may offer personal attention but may not be able to offer everything you want to do. Whatever you choose to do, both options should give you a good idea about the college and how you might like (or dislike) being a student at the college.
For many high school students, college seems like something far in the future. But as you come closer to graduation, the importance of college readiness becomes clear. When you take the time to plan ahead, you can reduce stress and assemble all the information you need to make the best choices. First, Think Broadly Before you start making specific plans, think about what you’d like to study and what institutions support that goal. Sally Rubenstone of College Confidential recommends starting to think about what you’ll be doing post-graduation, as well as starting to make a list of potential choices, in your sophomore and junior years of high school. This way, by the time your senior year of high school starts, you’ll be well-prepared to choose and apply to schools. Senior year is often stressful for a variety of reasons, so beginning college planning well in advance may help reduce some of your stress. Create an SAT Plan While colleges look at a variety of factors when evaluating your application, having a high SAT score is very important for more competitive institutions. Developing an SAT plan that identifies your learning style and applying it can be an excellent way to prepare. Some students may do well with an SAT prep course, whether online or in person. Others may prefer to purchase an SAT prep book and study on their own for the exam. Consider Finances With tuition costs on the rise, most people find that they need to plan carefully in order to be able to pay for college. Greg Ward of
Financial Finesse notes that his family sets aside money each month for his children’s college funds. Setting aside money and applying for scholarships is something that can be done well in advance of deciding what school to attend. For many, attending community college and then transferring to a four-year institution is a viable option. Students can receive a valuable and less costly education for one to two years before transferring to a university. Don’t Neglect the Present As you begin to more seriously plan for college, it is often tempting to neglect current responsibilities like homework and extracurriculars. However, Peterson’s suggests that students (and particularly to eleventh grade students) continue with both academic and non-academic activities through the application process. While colleges will be looking at your grades, they also will evaluate your extracurricular activities when deciding whether to admit you. Plan College Visits Researching the institutions you are considering is a vital step in the college readiness process, since you need to know if a given school’s cost, location, size, admission requirements, and course offerings are what you need. However, once you’ve narrowed down your list, it’s time to choose a few schools to visit. A campus visit, especially one where classes are in session, can give you a sense of the school’s general atmosphere. During a visit, you may also be able to schedule a personal interview or speak with one or more professors in your chosen field.

with the Mount’s traditional Childhood Education program, providing additional experience for students interested in teaching Birth-Grade 2. This specialized training sets Mount education students apart from their peers and can make them more attractive to employers. On the graduate level, students interested in an MBA can now add a Health Care concentration to their degree, designed to prepare students to enter a variety of management positions within the healthcare sector. Similarly, the Mount also offers money-saving programs in business and education, which allow students to obtain both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in just five years. Students can earn a BA with Adolescence Education Certification in Biology, Chemistry, English, History, or Math paired with an MS in Education, or an Accounting or Business Management and Administration BS with an MBA in five years, allowing for quicker job placement in two growing fields. These new offerings join more than 50 other degree programs at the Mount, including nursing, communications, science, pre-professional studies, psychology, mathematics, sports management, and more.

s the job market evolves, Mount Saint Mary College prepares students for lasting careers by providing new degree programs in rapidly-growing fields. For example, Mount students can supplement their Mathematics degree with a concentration in Actuarial Science, a sector of insurance with 26 percent expected growth by 2022 and an almost zero unemployment rate. Additionally, students interested in Information Technology can choose to concentrate in Cybersecurity, recently added to the Mount’s existing tracks of Networking, Web Technologies, or Educational Technologies within the IT major. The college created the new concentration based on cybersecurity’s rising popularity within the IT field: Cybersecurity analyst positions are expected to boast 18 percent job growth by 2024 with a median salary of $90,000. Other recent additions to the Mount’s degree programs include Criminology and Early Childhood Education certification. Criminology, which the college added in 2016, is quickly becoming a popular choice for social science students. The unique program combines criminal justice and sociology. It examines not only criminal justice and the law, but also why crimes occur, the effects of victimization, and how society responds to crime and prepares students for positions as police officers, victim/witness advocates, restorative justice workers, child welfare officers, community service agency directors, and more. Teacher candidates can benefit from the Mount’s new Early Childhood Education certification extension, which can be combined

Approaching a counselor or teacher and asking them to write a recommendation can be an intimidating task, and many students will put it off – making the process even more difficult for both the student and the recommender. Just like with any other college application element, it’s important to start planning early and get a head start to make the process of gathering recommendation letters quick and easy.
Help writing a college recommendation letter
An important part of the application process
By Sally Wood
Many college and scholarship applications require recommendation letters. Some specify the recommenders-teachers, employers, or personal acquaintances; others simply indicate the number of recommendations required. Selection committees want to know as much as possible about you. They have objective information-grades, classes, and test scores. They have your application form, résumé, and essay(s). They also want to know how others see you. Select recommenders who know you well and who can write competently. Well-meaning friends may write glowing comments, but poor grammar and unprofessional appearances make negative impressions. Choose recommenders who will write specific statements about you-not remarks that could apply to any student. Generic comments reflect little about you and do not help you stand out among the applicants. Solicit college recommendation letters politely and appreciatively. Allow your recommender plenty of time; requesting a recommendation at the last minute is inconsiderate. People who write the best recommendations are usually very busy. You don't want one written by someone who feels hurried or is irritated with you. Provide relevant information so the letter of recommendation will be specifically about you and your qualifications. Indicate the purpose of the recommendation letter. If it is to accompany your college application, provide the college's name and background information so the recommender can discuss how you are an appropriate candidate. If it is for a scholarship, provide a copy of the application or a description of the scholarship and the sponsoring organization's mission. Supply a copy of your résumé listing your GPA, activities, leadership
roles, awards, community service, employment experience, and special skills. Indicate the person to whom a recommendation letter should be addressed. If you don't know the name, the letter may begin "Dear Selection Committee." Offer an addressed, stamped envelope with each request. If the recommendation must be mailed in an official envelope from the recommender's institution, supply a postage stamp. A letter that is to be submitted with the application should be returned to you in a sealed envelope. Many applications allow you to waive the right to see recommendations. Despite your legal right to see referrals, committees are impressed by those written with no concerns about the applicant's reaction. Select your recommender(s) carefully, and you'll have no reason to worry; most will say if they aren't comfortable writing a college recommendation letter or don't believe they can write positive statements about you. Have your recommenders save their letters if you're applying to several colleges or for several scholarships. Although each college recommendation letter should be tailored to the application at hand, the original passage contains basically what the recommender wants to share about you. Revising an original recommendation is more convenient than writing a new one. Thank your recommender-preferably in writing! Surprisingly, few students express their appreciation for recommendations. Expressing your gratitude is appropriate and advisable. If you weren't appreciative the first time, the recommender may be reluctant to help you when you ask for another college recommendation letter. If you receive the acceptance or the award, thank the recommender again, for contributing to your success.
