G.C. mulls marijuana opt-out

The City of Glen Cove has until the end of the year to decide whether to opt out of allowing the sale of marijuana, an issue that many community members on both sides feel strongly about. At a public hearing at City Hall on Nov. 21, they shared their opinions with
Mayor Tim Tenke and the City Council. A second hearing is scheduled for Dec. 14, before the council votes. Under legislation signed by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in March that legalized the purchase and consumption of marijuana by adults in New York, municipalities can choose whether to allow the operation of cannabis retail dispensaries
and consumption sites within their boundaries. “We need to make a decision by the end of the year, but I want to have public input on how we’re going to go with this,” Tenke said. “If we opt out, we can’t change the fact that it’s still legal in New York state to consume marijuana.
