Tim Higgins was the second of five Higgins brothers. The first four — Mike, Tim, Bob, and Joe — joined the Fire Department of New York. The youngest, Matt, became a detective with the New York Police Department. Their father, Eddie Higgins, was captain of FDNY Engine Company 227. Their only sister, Maureen, became a professional counselor.
Tim was on duty with Squad 252 on the night of Sept. 10, 2001. Around 11:30 p.m., he called Joe to wish him a happy birthday. As they hung up, Joe remembers saying, “Safe at work, bro” — the customary words the brothers spoke to each other as they went on duty at their separate fire companies. “Those were my last Continued on page 4

The coordinated attack by terrorists that felled the Wo rl d T r a d e C e n t e r, destroyed part of the Pentagon and brought down an airliner above Shanksville, Pa., changed U.S. security forever. The families of the 2,977 victims
have moved forward in their lives, but with a permanent burden of grief. Eight Freeporters died in the smoke and rubble of the twin towers. Joe HIggins and Kevin Muldowney, the brothers of firefighters Timothy B. Higgins and Richard T. Muldowney Jr., offered insider glimpses of the heroism displayed on that terrible day.
