Nautical Mile Fest kicks off summer fun in the village

After 15 months of shutdowns imposed by the Covid19 pandemic, the 34th Freeport Nautical Mile Festival heralded the rebound of village businesses and community life. Not quite a month before, government Covid-19 restrictions had eased in light of the ongoing drop in new cases

and deaths. In response, Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy opened the door to holding the festival again. All along the Nautical Mile last Saturday, the aroma of freshly cooked hot dogs, corn dogs, jerk chicken, funnel cakes and Philly steaks floated through the air. A long row of neatly placed tents and vendor tables stretched along Woodcleft Avenue, with bright racks of

summer clothing, shelves with wooden flutes and carved trains, and tabletops set with decorative coasters and soap dishes or bright yellow and blue shammy cloths. Interspersed with the merchants were tables for organizations like the Long Island Arts Council, Cornerstone Church and Dollars for Scholars. Families and groups of CONTINUED ON PAGE 3
