Local first responders recall ‘carnage’ of Sept. 11 attacks

Phil Malloy and Ralph Esposito, then members of the Nassau County Fire Commission, were driving east, to a fire truck repair and supply shop in Yaphank, on Sept. 11, 2001.

When they arrived, they were surprised to find no one outside the shop. What they discovered inside shocked them. “Nobody was doing anything besides staring at

the television,” Esposito recounted.

“Are you serious?” Malloy recalled asking himself as he learned that a commercial jet had struck the north tower of the World Trade Center. When a second jet crashed into the south tower 18 minutes later, he turned to Esposito. “Something’s not right,” he said.

“Something’s up.”

Soon, Malloy and Esposito were at the front of a long line of police cars and fire trucks heading from Long Island to

Lower Manhattan.

“It was a tough day,” Esposito, who later served as a firefighter with the Elmont Fire Department. “It was really heartbreaking.”

After coming home from his job as a New York City police officer that day, Dominick Labianca, who is now the chief of the Franklin Square and Munson Fire Department, was at the firehouse in Franklin Square, Continued on page 9

“It should be taught to every child,” Phil Malloy, a civic association board member, said of the attacks. Malloy, who became ill after working at ground zero, helped secure steel from the World Trade Center that is part of the memorial.

“It’s just a memory that never goes away,” said Kathy Musgraves, captain of Fire Police Company #1 and adviser to the Fire Department’s Explorer Post 710.

Musgraves, who was working at an eastern Long Island hospital at the time of the attacks, remembered that the patients she was serving, both elderly and young, were “horrified.”

“It’s something that we will never forget,” said Adrienne McKenna, correspondence secretary for the civic association.

“We have to always remember that day in our history. Especially for those of us who lived through that day.”

“Having experienced the event firsthand,” McKenna added, “I just want people to never forget. It was definitely a dark day for our country, and a lot of people suffered personal losses.”

The ceremony, she said, should serve as a reminder of the sense of national unity and patriotism many across the country felt in the wake of the attacks.

“Everybody bonded together,” McKenna said. “I don’t remember experiencing anything else like that. You just want to feel that patriotism.”

“Twenty years later, and it still affects people,” Culmone said. “The community still can feel that feeling; it was like a gut punch to everybody.”

“It serves as a constant reminder about all that is great about our country,” Labianca said, “and that freedom comes at a price.”

“I think this could happen anywhere,” Lee said. “I would think that if I’m in a restaurant choking someone in my vicinity would see that I was choking and would be able to do it for me.”

“The more people that know how to do it… the chances of someone being in a situation where someone can’t receive help is very minimal,” Lee said. “The more people that know it — that would be awesome.”

Whose voice will you listen to?

When you were a kid, some people may have told you negative things that still affect your self-esteem.

Maybe your big bro called you a blockhead. Or your mother’s remarks were constantly critical. Or your father kept telling you to toughen up!

Because you were young, vulnerable and heard these messages repeatedly, they may still echo in your mind.

It’s not easy to make a negative voice go away just by wishing it wasn’t there. Indeed, the more you wish something isn’t there, the more you reinforce its presence. Here’s an example. Take a moment to not think about a white tiger standing in the middle of your room. Try hard not to think of that tiger. What’s happening?

Paradoxically, the more you try to avoid thinking of the tiger, the longer he hangs around. So, what can you do to get rid of those annoying, denigrating voices that reside in your brain?

One way is to substitute the voice you don’t like with a voice you do like, a voice that’s calm, positive and reassuring. The voice may belong to

someone you know or it may seem to come out of nowhere – perhaps a dream, a song, a prayer. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that you own it. Make it yours.

Here’s how Amy did that. As a child, Amy suffered from asthma and bronchitis. She was a good student but a nervous child. She remembers her mom referring to her as “my poor Amy” and her dad telling her that she was “a good inda patient.” Her brother, however, would taunt her saying, “You’re just lazy, mom lets you get away with everything.” At age 33, the labels from her childhood still ring in her ears. She views herself as lazy, nervous and incompetent, despite being smart.

As Amy began to feel safe with me, she opened up about her many fears – of not measuring of, of feeling inadequate, of being awkward in social situations. Amy, however, was not just

complaining. She was looking for ways to be less critical of herself. She wanted to be more spontaneous with others and a better friend to herself.

Fast forward four months. Amy affir med that she was doing away with harsh judgments. “ T h i s bl a m e g a m e i s exhausting. I’m done with it! I remember the day you said to me, in that calm, reassuring voice of yours, that I’m okay just the way I am. Doesn’t mean there’s apadin no room for growth. But I’m okay just the way I am. You don’t know what that meant to me. I was crying in the car after I left.”

Amy continued to pick up many reassuring messages from me and others. Two of them kept ringing in her ears.

Islanders host hockey instructional for Elmont children

One hundred Elmont children learned how to play hockey at an instructional event held during the last week of July by the New York Islanders and organized by Gateway Youth Outreach, a communityfocused organization that organizes programs for the youth of Elmont.

GYO Executive Director Patrick Boyle said the goal of the program was to familiarize the students it serves with hockey, a sport almost all of its students had never played before.

“Most of our students are not familiar with hockey,” said Carol Reyes, program coordinator at GYO. “Broadening horizons and introducing youngsters to possibly unfamiliar sports is of great benefit to our young people,” she added.

Boyle noted that GYO has hosted instructional sports events in the past, often teaching Elmont introducing students to sports they do not play in school, such as golf.

At the event, the students were split apart by grade level and groups of 15 to 20 students per group to ensure each student received personalized instruction from the Islanders floor hockey team, which taught the students basics of puck handling and provided an overview of penalties and shooting technique and skill development in hockey.

“It’s really interesting how a bunch of kids who had never been introduced to hockey were actually very, very good,” said GYO Executive Director Patrick Boyle.

The Islanders later provided each of the 100 students that attended the hockey event with a t-shirt, water bottle, ball, drawstring bag, and hockey stick.

Boyle, who is a hockey fan, said that

He added that many students he spoke to after the event told him that they were excited to learn a new sport and be able to watch hockey in Elmont this fall.

GYO released a statement on August 13

that thanked the Islanders for its partnership at the event: “GYO is extremely thankful to the New York Islanders for providing this opportunity and giving young people the tools to enjoy playing and watching hockey,” the statement said.

“The Islanders were extremely generous,” Boyle said, expressing gratitude for the hockey club’s partnership with GYO.

Bi-partisan bill filed for new Disabilities Awareness Group Members of the Nassau County Legislature joined Disability Advocates, residents with disabilities, and others to announce the formation of a Disabilities Awareness Advisory Group. This bi-partisan group will meet quarterly, to discuss different ways Nassau County can work better for those with disabilities. The bill will come before legislative committees on September 13th and before the full legislature on September 24th where It is expected to pass.

“As an advocate for disabilities, this legislation is very important,” Wantagh Disabilities Advocate Gina Barbara said.

“This has been an ongoing process for many years and will establish a connection between the County and people with disabilities and give them a voice. Thank you to the Legislature for doing this.”

“By creating this advisory group we

will make sure Nassau County lives up to its promise to include all of our citizens in the legislative process, and give them a voice.” Legislator Steve Rhoads said.

“Officials do a lot of talking, but we need to do more listening. This is an opportunity for us to continue to listen to those with disabilities and take any necessary legislative action to make sure Nassau County is working for everyone.”

New MSSN president outlines goals

Dr. Adhi Sharma took over as president at Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital in Oceanside on Sept. 1 after previously serving as its chief medical officer and its executive vice president for clinical and professional affairs.

Sharma succeeds Dr. Richard Murphy, who was president for nine years and had worked in health-care leadership roles for more than four decades. Sharma was chosen by the hospital’s board of directors after a six-month search and will be the hospital’s first physician leader, as the presidency has typically been a chief executive officer role led by those with business backgrounds.

As he prepared to take over the role, Sharma sat down for a question-and-answer session with the Herald.

Herald: What are your thoughts and feelings on taking on a new role?

Sharma: There are a lot of emotions. Specifically, I’m cer-

tainly humbled by the trust that’s been put in me, and the staff that we have here has been so amazing. I’m excited to take on the role and eager to continue the momentum that we have built up this year to keep going forward. When we came out of the pandemic, a lot of hospitals came out not as strong as they went in, and we actually came out stronger. That was because of our ability to respond and the close-knit group of staff we have that really stepped up to the plate. Everybody worked side by side, so we came out with a lot of momentum, and we’re very eager to keep that momentum going forward.

Herald: Can you describe your roles and duties and how they compare to what you were doing previously?

Sharma: My role [before Sept. 1], I was chief medical offi-

cer and executive vice president [of the hospital], so I had a number of areas that I provided oversight for, including [information technology]. I worked closely with nursing, all of the quality and regulatory components, as well as patient experience components, so there were a lot of areas that I oversaw.

It will be an interesting transition to let go of everything that I’ve been involved with at the level that I’ve been involved . . . I will have to backfill my current role, and once I do that, that’s when that transition will occur.

As long as I’m serving two roles, I’ll end up staying closer to the projects that I’m involved with now. [This role] reflects where health care is today. We are much more focused on quality of care, clinical programming and population health, and much less focused on contracting and all the business elements of health care.

Herald: What are some of your major goals going forward?

Sharma: The main goal is in three parts. The first is to

keep that forward momentum, so all of the projects we have going come to fruition, and to see them to completion and any hiccups or obstacles, we have to make sure we overcome those. The second is to steward the integration with the system [that comes with the planned $400 million expansion], that’s a very high priority for us . . .

The third is to continue to provide the care we’re known for to keep our staff engaged through this process and make sure their wellness is being minded. Because of the pandemic, there’s a lot of fatigue setting in for our staff . . . Getting our staff and our community to whatever the next phase of this is . . . will be the third priority — to see us through the pandemic.

Herald: What are your thoughts on your predecessor Richard Murphy, and has he given you any advice?

Sharma: He’s been mentoring me for this role for the last six years. I’ve been working very closely with him. I first started working with him in 2007, so I’ve known him a

long time . . . While I’ve been here, he’s been working very closely with me. He’s an excellent role model for any hospital leadership. It’s easy to oversimplify this sentence, but the gravity of it cannot be underestimated: He gets it. I’ve worked with a lot of CEOs, and he’s a CEO that gets it . . . It’s so easy for . . . a non-clinical CEO to just look at numbers, look at volumes, look at budget reports, things like that. He doesn’t just do that. He always sees the big picture, and he always sees the totality of that picture.

Herald: What specific challenges do you face taking on this new role during a pandemic, especially with the Delta variant?

Sharma: There are going to be interesting challenges

related to this [vaccine] mandate [for health care workers] and what that’s going to mean for health care. I support that mandate. I think it’s the right thing to do for health care. It’s the right thing to do for our patients, it’s the right thing to do for our staff, so it was great that we were able to get that mandate in New York state. There are staff that may find it so objectionable that they leave health care, so we may see a concern with staffing as it relates to people who just opt to not get vaccinated.

That’s going to be a challenge. I think that Delta has shown us that even when you think you’re out of the woods, you’re really not.

Herald: Community outreach has always been a part of the hospital. What plans do you have to continue that?

Sharma: Community outreach is more important than ever. Getting information to people, that’s been a high priority for us. Our Truth in Medicine polls have been a great vehicle for us to really just assess what the pulse is of the community . . . We’re very eager to partner with our communities, partner with our elected officials to get education to our communities. The most important thing in health care is that people are educated . . . If we have food deserts in our community, if we have access issues in our community, we want to see how we can solve those problems. The [Covid-19] ‘Vaxmobile’ is a great example of solving an issue of access to vaccines.

We’ve learned a lot about our community through this pandemic, and we want to put all that knowledge to work. There are some silver linings in this pandemic, and our relationship with the community has never been tighter.

A veteran-laden Hofstra women’s soccer team is fueled for a return to the NCAA Tournament this fall after its abridged spring season ended in heartbreak.

Hofstra, which entered September ranked 25th in the national coaches poll, returned nearly every starter from a 7-1-1 team where the Pride led the nation in scoring per game, but were denied a chance to compete on the sport’s biggest stage following a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Elon in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) semifinals. The rare spring season due to the pandemic created a far shorter than normal offseason.

Vowinkel enters his final collegiate season as a graduate student ranked sixth in program history with 29 career goals and was drafted in the third round of 2021 Major League Soccer SuperDraft by FC Cincinnati. The Chaminade High School graduate headed in a goal off a cross from Strongin in Hofstra’s season-opening victory at Rhode Island on Aug. 26.

Strongin, a fellow grad student who began the season with 15 career assists, will be another key facet of the offense along with Stefan Mason, Ryan Carmichael and Jason Ramirez. Mason tallied the lone goal in Hofstra’s 1-0 win at Stony Brook on a penalty kick.

Ryu’s Martial Arts has moved to a new location, with space for more students to learn and practice taekwondo.

Now at 309 Sunrise Highway, the martial arts studio reopened during the first week of August, continuing its 21 years of operation in Lynbrook.

The studio is open from 2 to 9 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2 to 8:30 p.m. on Fridays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Classes are available for adults and children ages 4 and older.

No date was set for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at press time, but an open house to celebrate the reopening was held on Aug. 28. During the event, anyone was welcome to drop in to watch a class, participate in different activities and learn about taekwondo.

Kim Ryu, office manager at Ryu’s, spoke highly of the new location’s modern design and larger accommodations, which initially surprised many young students.

“This space is so much better, so much nicer, so much bigger,” he said.

“There’s much more visibility, so I can see everybody coming through the door.

Everything is just fantastic here. The kids love it, too. It was great, when they first started coming in, to see what the look on their faces was — so shocked they didn’t even know what to do.

They’re still getting used to it.”

While the Covid-19 pandemic slowed down the process of moving into the new building, it also made the more spacious location especially necessary,

Ryu explained.

“With Covid, we were very limited in the class sizes before,” he said. “Now, because the space is so much bigger, we’re able to have more kids per class.

People used to kind of get locked out of classes, and now they don’t. There’s plenty of room for everybody who wants to come.”

Head instructor Fer nando Lopez Cruz said that the new location has been embraced as a fresh start by students who have been dealing with the effects of the pandemic in recent months.

“We do miss the other location, so it’s a little bit nostalgic, but so far this new location has been great,” he said. “I see that a lot of our students are liking it, especially with this past year and everyone being quarantined. Something new, I think, can definitely bring us that energy we need again.”

The martial arts studio will also host a back-to-school celebration this month.

Lopez Cruz, who has worked at Ryu’s for over five years, will give an anti-bullying seminar at the end of the event.

For the seminar and martial arts lessons alike, Lopez Cruz said that the principles of discipline and respect are crucial.

“I think that there’s a big misconception of martial arts,” he said. “Yes, the kicking and punching are a part of it, but the discipline and respect and all of those things? I think they’re a little more important.”

Q. We noticed a chip in our porcelain bathtub, made by the tile guy when our bathroom was renovated about three months ago. The tile company sent someone to repair it, because we didn’t want to replace it, which costs much more. We had kept the old tub, which was fine, so we didn’t have to replace the plumbing. We aren’t satisfied with the repair because, even though the color matches, the texture is slightly different, and we still notice it. Guests may not say anything, but we see it and don’t like it. A. We had just such a problem when the guy who caused the chip dropped a power tool while putting in a towel bar. He didn’t want to admit it at first, but then finally agreed to “fix” it, because otherwise everything would have needed to come out, again, and be completely redone, from the tub to the tile to the onte eeper plumbing. The tile was never going to be a perfect match, either. So the same guy who dropped the tool dabbed a matching primer on the spot, waited until it cured, buffed it out just like the instructions said, then brushed on the final coat with a little eye-dropper brush.

It looked like a repair, and was very obvious and disappointing. After much wasted discussion and time, when the guy tried his best to convince us “nobody would see it, it was hardly noticeable,” we decided to call a bathtub refitting company. The estimate wasn’t bad and the tile company agreed to pay for the repair. I was impressed at how much simpler the process was than I anticipated. I had doubts that the tub wouldn’t look as substantial as the porcelain tub finish and wouldn’t last.

Putting in a bathtub can affect the waterproofing of the bathroom if it isn’t installed with redundant materials to prevent water from getting into the walls. Typically, the lipped edges of the back of a wall-to-wall tub go up against the surrounding waterproofed walls before the tile is installed, so the tile overlaps the raised tub edge. This prevents water from flowing against gravity into the wall, especially after the sealant is installed. With the original tub still in place, the junction of the tub and tile isn’t disturbed, and the new tub covering joins at the tiled wall edge and is then resealed to actually reinforce the original waterproofing.

The bathtub replacement took one trip to thoroughly measure and a second trip to install.

Because the new tub is an exact match with the shape of the original one, there are no air pockets between the old and new tub. The tub fixture looks perfect, and was not only an exact fit, but has been there for eight years and still looks brand new.

think everyone will concede that the summer went by too quickly. But despite the speed at which two months have passed, the world around us continued to function, and both good and bad things happened. In this short period of time, New Yorkers have seen the resignation of their governor and our first major storm experience. The weeks and months ahead will no doubt present us with new challenges.

We have a new governor, Kathy Hochul, who has hit the ground JERRY running, and established herKREMER self as a major political figure.

She has appointed a number of highly experienced staff members, and will make many more changes in order to erase the Cuomo footprint. Her new head of the Department of Financial Services is Adrienne Harris, who has worked as a special assistant to the White House and a senior adviser in the U.S. Treasury Department. DFS is a

complex agency, and needs a level-headed leader.

Hochul has not been reluctant to wade into controversial areas. She has signed an executive order to require masks in all schools, and is pushing hard to get unvaccinated New Yorkers to get their shots as soon as possible. She called a special session of the Legislature to extend the eviction moratorium and also to move forward on the legalization of marijuana. Up to this point, the state had done a miserable job of distributing federal funds to New Yorkers who are behind on their rent.

Like many appointed public officials who plan to seek election to their new positions, she has a short time to establish herself as a strong governor, in the hope that she can ward off a 2022 primary challenge. The legislative leaders are making a sincere attempt to work with her, many out of relief that the Cuomo era is over. But time will tell whether they can work as an effective team, because Albany is a place where egos can collide on a moment’s notice.

While many of us were lounging on a beach or escaping on a golf course, politicians around the country were doing loads of mischief. Despite the fact that at least six states were all but drowning in Covid cases thanks to the Delta variant, their governors were busy banning mask mandates and telling everyone to make believe the disease had disappeared. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, whose state is racking up new cases, is actively battling school districts and cruise lines, who are just trying to keep people of all ages from getting sick.

The so-called red state governors are having a field day passing laws intended to restrict people from voting and to ban virtually all abortions. To date, over 400 laws have been introduced in 38 states to restrict the general public’s, and especially minorities’, opportunities to vote. The Texas legislature has passed a law banning abortions six weeks after a fetal heartbeat is detected. Having four daughters, I’ve learned that most women don’t even know they’re pregnant at that stage.

Republican governors decided that people were declining to go to work because they were getting an extra $300 in federal unemployment benefits. Assuming that those people were all a bunch of slackers, state officials decided to stop giving out the federal dollars, assuming that this would force the recipients to leave home and go back to work. Their judgment has proven wrong, as unemployment statistics haven’t changed, and the people who were staying home continued to do so.

A final note about who’s running for public office these days. It seems that during the past year, there were 23 new people elected to the State Legislature. Only six had any government experience, and four had held a job in the private sector.

That left 13 who came into public office with few if any credentials. There’s no moral to this story. It’s just circumstantial evidence that it’s hard to find experienced people to run for office, and that’s a big loss for all of us.

A dog’s tale: the view from inside the canine carry-on

can’t stretch out, I can hardy breathe, but even inside this dog carrier, the air is better than the smoke out in Lake Tahoe. As the family pet, I went along on the summer vacation out West. Think of me as your four-legged eyewitness to one family’s encounter with environmental disaster.

As my human reported last week, we headed to Tahoe last month to visit kids and grandkids. We expected a month of R&R on the Truckee River. My human dad, superanxious about the RANDI trip, fixated on my KREISS food and my, um, movements. I’m not talking Beethoven. He carried blue New York Times plastic bags across the country because those are his favorite disposables.

We flew to Denver and drove 16 hours to Tahoe. A different hotel every night, weird hallway smells, walks on scorching asphalt and very super-sized people not wearing masks, which I resent because if something happens to my humans, I’m toast.

In Tahoe, we stayed at my sister’s house and at a rental house in the moun-

tains. My sister has a new, irritating puppy. He ate my food and chewed up my travel bed. He sneaked up on me and jumped on my back for reasons I don’t understand. The rental house was worse.

At night I walked outside in blackout conditions, the heavy musk of bear in the air.

Then smoke from the fires swept into Tahoe and smothered our air. People have no idea how ash and the absence of any poopworthy grass can affect a dog.

Then the humans started to misbehave. Tensions escalated into tiffs, and sniping ensued. Someone growled, “Who’s idea was it to come out here, anyway?”

And, “Who peed in the kitchen?”

The humans clearly had no idea what to do. Some knucklehead decided that an escape to San Francisco would work. Did I have a say?

New hotel room, new “pet relief ” area.

So stressful. My human dad brought along the blue plastic Times bags because sometimes even humans need comfort toys.

The San Francisco air was clear and in the “healthy” range on www.airnow.com.

While I cooled my paws in the hotel, my people walked the Embarcadero and

toured the Botanical Gardens. But it was all an illusion of relief.

Back in Tahoe, air quality misery was now compounded by “extremely high and dangerous risk of fire.” CalFire texted that news to people’s phones every few hours.

We moved yet again, from the rental house back to my sister’s house, just for safety, to be under one roof.

That meant back to the devil dog.

Family tensions erupted again. Light the grill or don’t risk a spark? Walk me around the block or let me roam the yard? Take the kids to town or hide from the smoke? Everyone was supercharged, and displaying all the symptoms of loving but dysfunctional families everywhere. Lots of shouting, some crying, endless couldhave, should-have, and who’s feeding the dogs? I’m here to tell you that either no one fed me or everyone fed me. I hate when the humans become unreliable.

After a few days of simmering under one roof, my humans decided to leave, give up the rental house a month early, return our car to the wrong location (Reno instead of Denver) fly out of Reno ASAP, and then home.

So I’m writing on the RNO-to-DEN leg.

I heard news of hurricane-remnant flooding in New York, but we’re homeward bound, escaping the fires and ready for the wind and rain. A leg up to my compatriots splashing through flooded streets.

Tomorrow we fly back to the God-blessAmerica-I-hope-I-never-travel-again-better-than-a-mound-of-peanut-butter-glorious East Coast. We worry about the family we left in Tahoe, and yeah, even the new puppy. How’s a little guy supposed to feel safe outside and comfortable inside when Noah’s Ark is burning? My humans’ grandkids just sent a photo of a bear looming at the edge of their property.

Who’s going to tell the little guy to stay away?

The kids have several plans in play while hoping for shifting winds. Meanwhile, we fly east.

It is undignified to travel inside a “doggie carry-on” bag, but I fell for the old peanut butter trick. She who shall not be named tossed a peanut butter cookie into the bag, and I dived for it. Again.

Over the past three weeks I have slept in nine different beds. Now we’re cruising at 34,000 feet and I’m in a canvas tote, stuffed under the seat of some overstuffed dude. Nothing seems quite right, even in a dog’s world.

Reflecting on the Sept. 11 attacks 20 years later

t

he Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pa., set off a cascade of worldwide catastrophes over the subsequent two decades — the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and many other terrorist attacks, in multiple countries. September 2001 seems like a lifetime ago, but for those old enough to remember that terrible year, it remains a haunting memory, a fever dream that we try to lock in the backs of our brains but is ever-present.

For those of us in Nassau County that day, we could only watch in horror as grayblack smoke plumes spiraled out of the twisted, shattered remains of the twin towers upward into an otherwise perfect azure sky. The plumes were visible from points across the county.

Shortly after the attacks, people started to gather on the beach in Lido and at the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick — the highest point on the South Shore — to watch the billowing smoke, staring silently in stunned disbelief.

The United States homeland was under attack for the first time since World War II, and at that moment, we had no idea who the invader was, or the future suffering in distant lands that the attacks would bring.

It was all incomprehensibly terrifying.

In a front-page story in the Heralds’ Sept. 13-19 issue, “Terror at the Towers,” reported by Scott Brinton, Carrie James, Laura Lane, Jeff Lipton, Larry Maier and Cindy Roth, this is how we described the scene: “A wave of fear and despair raced across [Nassau County] Tuesday morning

“In the afternoon, surviving victims of the attack filtered into Nassau by Long Island Rail Road, like refugees from a war zone. Many, who were still shaking dusty, white debris from their clothes, were not from the area but had taken the first train they could out of the city and gotten off at the first possible stop.”

We sent our reporters to the train stations to meet the survivors of the attacks.

Sylvia Melendez, who worked in Lower Manhattan, described the chaos after the towers crashed to the ground. “The rush of clouds of debris forced everyone out into the streets,” she said. “Everyone was running away.”

Here in Nassau, people were glued to their TVs and radios, watching and listening, hoping for the best but fearing the worst. “I’ve been listening all morning,” Luisa DeGirolamo, who worked at La Margherita Pastry Shop in Bellmore Village, said. “I’m devasted. I can’t get over it.”

Rollen Cagoles, of East Meadow, said, “I’m really scared. It’s so scary if we have something of a World War III. I’m really,

The challenges on Long Island are many. Our aging infrastructure needs serious attention. As the nation’s first suburb, we are living with an antiquated system that requires an upgrade. Our increasingly overburdened roadways, bridges and tunnels are dismal.

The environmental infrastructure is failing.

Drinking water has challenges, including the quality and quantity. Surface water contamination is rampant from nitrogen and other pollutants entering our creeks, bays, harbors and the Long Island Sound. Our air is polluted with toxins too small to see with the naked eye. We are vulnerable to sea level rise, climate change and the inevitable next big storm. The fact is, we aren’t ready.

Our environment is too important for the noaction tendencies of the past to continue. Our

Many parents rushed to their children’s schools to pick them up and take them home, fearful of further attacks. “A lot of people came and pulled their kids out because they didn’t want them to be in a place with a large group of people,” said Pat Brace, PTA president of Bowling Green Elementary School in East Meadow.

“They thought they would be a target.”

Nassau police doubled patrols around municipal buildings, schools, houses of worship and transportation lines. Police also diverted westbound traffic away from New York City. Motorists who had to travel major throughfares were advised to stay home.

The military closed down the airspace over Long Island, with unlighted F-16 fighter jets streaking overhead above John F. Kennedy International Airport into the night of Sept. 11 to 12.

Nearly 500 Long Islanders died in the attacks at the World Trade Center or later succumbed to 9/11-related illnesses. Each one was a life extinguished too soon. We must remember all of them — their essential goodness, their essential humanity.

In the coming days, there will be solemn ceremonies in remembrance of the dead.

Consider attending one to show your support for the victims, or stop and pause for a moment at 8:46 and 9:04 a.m. on Saturday and reflect on or say a prayer for the victims. In this way, you will help to keep their memories alive for generations to come. “Never forget” should never become a trite slogan. It should be a motto by which we live.

hen talking with my grandkids about returning to school this fall — to the building, with other kids, not the dining room table — I was reminded of a school day of my own years ago.

“Bobby.” I heard my name called on the second-floor landing of A. B. Davis High School in Mount Vernon, N.Y. The caller was Mr. Leone, Joseph Leone, my biology teacher and college adviser. “Why haven’t you signed up for ALAn the SATs?” he asked. sinGer Neither of my parents had attended college, my mother had died eight years earlier, and my father, a vacuum cleaner salesman, had his hands full with two active kids. When I think about the controversies surrounding school openings this fall, I think, too, of the critical role of teachers in the lives of their students.

That certainly was the case for me.

Mr. Leone wasn’t alone in affecting my life for the better. I was going to drop out of college after my first year not only because of the cost, but also because I

questioned why I was there. I entered to be a minister, but had become disillusioned with organized religion. My college adviser, Mildred Martin, helped me sort through the financial and philosophical questions and urged me to appeal my financial aid award, and I continued as her student.

Other teachers stand out as well. Miss Calabrese and Miss King, in elementary school, “Pop” Phillips in high school, Mark Ebersole in college, and Kay Moore and Robin Williams in graduate school.

The past year of living and learning with Covid in our path and in our shadows revealed the inequalities of access to teachers like the ones I’ve known. When teachers are diverted from their main responsibilities, teaching and advising, they can’t fulfill their roles to the fullest. It is especially difficult for them to be effective when students lack access to broadband and Wi-Fi, a quiet place to study, and supportive adults to help them with difficult assignments.

A distinguished psychologist once said that we human beings are the “teaching species.” All species must learn enough to leave the nest, but humans turned teaching into a “calling,” a vocation dedicated to preparing the next generation

was going to drop out of college after my first year. I questioned why I was there.

Letters looming issues need real solutions, not lip service. We need to address the Island’s solid-waste crisis, illegal dumping and the associated increases in disposal costs.

Hochul hasn’t been handed the reins of the state at our finest hour. New Yorkers suffer with an unsustainable tax burden that’s accelerating the exodus of high-net-worth people, employers and job creators. The growing disparity in income and wealth, an increasing immigrant population and the associated educational and health care challenges are monumental. And our young workforce and empty-nesters are leaving because of a lack of affordable housing.

Leaders in the past have forsaken us in favor of book deals, their own selfish agendas and their next election. Indeed, some are in prison for their bad behavior, but the reality is, the good people of New York have been sold out, and that’s why we require Hochul’s earnest leadership.

We have hope in her vision, fortitude and ability to make the really tough decisions. We’re counting on her. Most important, please know that we are here for you, governor. Long Island and the state of New York have immense resources, none greater than their residents.

There will be vocal naysayers who attempt to stop Hochul from addressing these vexing challenges. There are people who talk a lot, and there are people who get stuff done. To Hochul, I say this:

with knowledge, skills and values. As a result, teachers have a moral, social, civic and historical responsibility for not only educating each new generation but also, in this way, creating the future.

We must remember the vocation, the calling, of teaching. As the historian Jacques Barzun said, “Teaching is not a lost art, but the regard for it is a lost tradition.”

At the beginning of our nation, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson stated that public education was at the heart of democracy.

“The whole people must take upon themselves the education of the whole people and be willing to bear the expenses of it,” Adams wrote. “There should not be a district of one mile square without a school in it, not founded by a charitable individual, but maintained at the public expense of the people themselves.”

Jefferson expressed similar sentiments. It is unfortunate, therefore, that some local school boards see teachers simply as employees, instead of as those who inspire discovery and awaken students’ imaginations, as Mark Van Doren and Robert Frost said.

But while the Founders argued that schooling was a local responsibility, they were adamant about the public benefits

to the nation. They believed that education should be public; is critical to democracy because it prepares an informed citizenry, able to ask questions; is important because it prevents aristocracy and promotes meritocracy; should be free from religion and ideology; should be equal and equally available to all citizens; and is a public investment that is worth the cost.

While the ideals of the Founders foundered on the compromises made to create a republic, they nevertheless created within the Constitution the mechanisms for correcting early mistakes and providing the means for continuing the pursuit of a “more perfect union,” which we have shown the ability to do.

As we help our kids and grandkids, or relatives or neighbors’ kids, prepare for a new school year, let us acknowledge the noble profession of teaching, perhaps by remembering our own teachers, and do what we can to fulfill the Founders’ aspirations for true equality of education in America.

Cuomo should be impeached To the Editor: Re Robert Rosenberg’s column “History repeats itself in Albany — again and again” (Aug. 26-Sept. 1): I agree with Rosenberg’s opinions, and would add that former Gov. Andrew Cuomo would indeed get the last hurrah and make “the State Legislature and state government look like a ship of fools” if it gave him a free pass on the nursing home deaths scandal and his subsequent cooking of the books to make it appear less egregious than he would have had us believe. Interestingly, Gov. Kathy Hochul revealed immediately that these deaths were undercounted by some 12,000.

By ordering nursing homes to accept Covid-19 patients, Cuomo, threatening owners with penalty if they did not comply, exposed many more confined elderly to the virus, potentially causing their deaths. With all due respect, I consider manslaughter to be an even more serious

crime than the sexual harassment charges that forced Cuomo’s resignation.

Given the present state of affairs, it is now the State Legislature (and, ultimately, the State Senate) that is on trial, and it remains to be seen whether playing politics will take precedence over what must be done in the name of justice. How can

anyone trust Cuomo now? He contends that he will not seek future political office, but only impeachment would close the book on that possibility, definitively and conclusively.
