Elmont H.S. students organize following abortion ruling By ROBERT TRAVERSO rtraverso@liherald.com
When the Supreme Court voted on June 24 to overturn Roe v. Wade â the landmark 1973 ruling establishing a womanâs right to an abortion â a group of students from Elmont Memorial High School decided to take action. Students Aliana Bryan and Najwa Patterson formed an as yet unnamed discussion and activism group dedicated to spreading civic and political knowledge among fellow students and Elmont community members, particularly the Elmont Cultural Center.
Patterson said the goal is to gather like-minded people to discuss events and issues of national importance. The group will also plan and organize community events to infor m Elmont community members about civic and political topics, including civic literacy, gun control and abortion rights. During the summer the group plans to strategize about how to create major change, âcoming up with ways to improve the state of our nation and our community,â Patterson said. The first meeting was held on July 6 at Averill Boulevard Park in Elmont, where the high

Elmont Memorial H.S. student courtâs decision to overturn the landmark abortion rights case was the main topic. âI think itâs really not fair,â Bryan, who will enter 11th grade at Elmont in September, said about the Supreme Courtâs decision to strike down the constitutional right to abortion that has existed since 1973. âWomen should have the right to do what
they want with their bodies. The government shouldnât have a say.â âThe U.S. Supreme Court has robbed millions of people of their right to control their bodies and personal health care decisions,â Joy D. Calloway, the interim president of the Planned Parenthood of Greater New York Action Fund, said in a statement.
Although abortion is no longer protected on the national level, it remains a protected right in New York and other states across the U.S. Bryan emphasized that while women can still seek abortions in New York, millions of other women across the country now lack the ability to get an abortion Continued on page 4
