Business, civic and religious leaders in Elmont and Franklin Square have made it clear that they want to help resettle Ukrainian refugees expected to reach the U.S. soon after fleeing the increasingly deadly war waged by Russia since Feb. 24, and called on residents of local communities to support the refugees as much as possible.
“The short answer to the situation in Ukraine is that it’s tragic,” said Rabbi Art Ver non of Congregation Shaaray Shalom. The United Nations has reported that over 10 million people have left Ukraine since the war began. “Whenever there is a chaotic situation like this, and people are displaced from their homes, it behooves all of us to do whatever we can to either resettle them or devel-
op a system to return them to their homes when it’s safe and appropriate,” said Vernon, whose congregation serves the Jewish populations of both Franklin Square and West Hempstead.
