‘Bachelor’ star donates dresses Sewanhaka students hear from Daria Rose

The shimmering dresses were outshone only by the beaming students.

Daria Rose, a Harvard University graduate, a current student at Yale Law School and a former contestant on the hit ABC series “The Bachelor” shared words of advice with a packed room of female students at Sewanhaka High School last Friday, and donated dresses she purchased for the reality show to students.

Rose, a Baldwin resident, spent $4,000 on clothes and

accessories for the show — enough for 10 to 12 weeks of filming — only to be eliminated in the first week of competition.

“I thought to myself, I have so many clothes that I’m not going to wear … what better to do than a giveaway?’” Rose, 25, said. “I’d love to give some amazing, deserving girls new dresses.”

A video she posted on TikTok, explaining how much she spent, went viral, and soon young women began to reach out in droves to her via Instagram and other social media platforms to find out if

she planned to give away or sell her dresses.

Rose donated eight dresses, which are now headed to prom and formal events for Sewanhaka students, at last week’s get-together.

After her comments, the students got a look at the dresses up close. They were excited about the prospect of taking them home, and a teacher from the high school explained that it would soon announce how they would be given away.

“We’ve been a pillar in the community,” Matthew said of the church’s 20-year history in Elmont, noting that it has worked with community members, local leaders, organizations and businesses.

At the height of the coronavirus pandemic, members of the congregation took part in a “Love Our City” initiative, setting up a GoFundMe page to provide meals for front-line workers, and community members and local small businesses in need. Additionally, the church sent food — all from local businesses — to local pharmacists, hospital employees, police and other community members.

Church members are required to participate in a variety of community service projects, partnerships and community events, Matthew explained. In 2020, the church also worked with Salvatore’s of Elmont to create a grab-and-go food program for those who needed meals.

The “re-dedication” of the church, which identifies as multi-ethnic, multigenerational and multi-cultural, and includes congregants of Indian, Hispanic, Italian and other backgrounds, does not mean that One Church is not committed to the Elmont community,

“It is not just about Elmont, but we will start in Elmont; this will be home, and wherever the lord leads us we will move forward trusting in the lord,” Matthew said.

“We are doing this to honor God, we are doing this to honor the work that the Lord is doing … it’s about reaching the community, and reaching people,” said Bishop Steve Smith, the administrative bishop for the New York Church of God, who led the congregation in prayer at the event following the announcement of the new name.

But Matthews was clear that despite the new name, One Church has not changed its mission.

“Just because we changed the name doesn’t mean we changed what we believe,” Matthew stressed, explaining that the church remains committed to the Pentecostal belief in the entirety of the Bible and of embodying the teachings of Jesus.

“We cannot live in the past, but we can honor it,” he said, calling on the congregation to respect the church’s past but embrace its future. “This is not about who we were but who we are becoming.”

Bishop steve smith, the administrative bishop for the New York Church of God, above, spoke at the dedication service last Saturday, and stressed that the Elmont church remained committed to the local community.

Matthew said the church hopes to expand to multiple locations under its new name.

“We are not going to move forward as first, but we are going to move forward as one church … one church of all generations, of all backgrounds,” Matthew said.

The Elmont Police Activity League and former Nassau County Legislator Francis Becker teamed up to donate basketballs to Elmont children on April 6 to honor Jomani “Jo-Jo” Wright, a standout basketball player from Uniondale who died in a car crash last year.

Wright, a sophomore honor student, was 15 when he died. He was sitting in the back seat of an SUV when it collided with another SUV and later with a utility pole in January 2021.

The PAL and Becker donated 15 basketballs to boys and girls from Elmont inside the gymnasium at the Clara H. Carlson School in Elmont.

“It just struck my heart,” Becker, who served for 20 years on the legislature, said of the basketball player’s death.

Wright, who was widely considered the top public basketball player in Nassau County, was on his way to earning All-Long Island honors, averaging 19 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals per game. Knights reached Nassau Class AA final.

Becker, who represented the sixth legislative district, which includes parts of Nassau communities such as Malverne and Rockville Centre, said his relationships with other legislators who represented more socioeconomi-

Three years ago, Becker founded Lincoln-King Republicans, a political organization and movement that seeks to advance the goals of the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

“God didn’t create a garden with just one color,” Becker said. “He created a

garden with many colors … how boring would it be to have a garden with just one color?” he asked, explaining that his Christian faith inspires the Lincoln-King Republicans’ advocacy for Black Americans.

Becker, who said his grandfather, Frank J. Becker, who voted for the Civil Rights Act in 1964, inspires him to continue organizing for Black Americans,

said there “is a need to move the conversation” on issues facing Black people in the U.S. The PAL, founded in 2021, works to prevent juvenile delinquency and build relationships between police officers and Elmont’s children.

Hall said the basketball donation is a way for Becker and the PAL to support the Elmont community. “It gives our children an opportunity,” Hall said, adding that basketballs and sports equipment in general is expensive.

“With the present situation we’re in financially across the board,” she said, alluding to nationwide inflation, “anyone who takes out time to show interest in our children regardless of whether it’s financially or just being present, I think it’s an amazing thing,” Hall added, applauding Becker and the PAL for the donation.

“I wanted to keep his spirit alive,” Becker said of Wright, adding that his early success makes him an “ideal role model” for Elmont’s children to look up.

Becker said his organization will continue to commemorate Wright’s legacy annually in order to honor his legacy and support the Elmont community.

“I want us to come together more and do acts of kindness and love,” Becker said. “I hope this inspires other young people to finish his journey.”

Funding sets up planned health center repairs

Renovations planned at the Family Health Center in Elmont are on pace to be completed after the organization that runs the site, the Long Island Federally Qualified Health Center, recently received $2 million of federal funding through a government spending package for fiscal year 2022.

Upgrades to the Elmont location include new health services, such as new dental service rooms, new fire and sprinkler systems and a new roof and a new façade to replace the current appearance of the building, which the LIFQHC, in a statement, said has deteriorated over time.

Democratic Congressman Gregory Meeks, who represents the 5th congressional district, which includes Elmont, secured over $15 million in funding for the congressional district, which includes the $2 million allocated to the health center in Elmont.

Outgoing Democratic Congresswoman Kathleen Rice also voted for the fiscal year 2022 funding bill, which included over $14 million worth of community project funding for the 4th congressional district, which includes Franklin Square.

Rice said the funding would have an “immediate” positive impact on the lives of residents who reside in the congressional district. “These investments will help increase our education resources, protect

our local environment, rehabilitate our infrastructure, and more,” she said, according to the statement.

David Nemiroff, the president and CEO of the LIFQHC, praised the funding, which will also create a brand new health center in Hempstead along with repairing the Elmont location. “This project will help deliver more access to healthcare for our most underserved and vulnerable residents.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who also voted for the funding, expressed support for the funding. “I am proud to have secured funding that will make our community healthier, safer, stronger, and even more resilient,” Schumer said.

“In addition to funding critical priorities at home and abroad, this bill includes

meaningful investments throughout Queens and Nassau County that will provide our community leaders with the resources they need to rebuild following COVID-19’s disruption”, the majority leader, added, according to the statement.

Rose said that from the start, she knew she wanted to donate the dresses to high school students. “Because of how hard it is to be a girl in high school, academically, socially, romantically, mentally… there’s a lot going on,” she said, explaining that her past struggles as a Black women and as a student inspired her to donate the dresses.

“Giving back is so important for so many reasons, and it’s always been a part of what I’ve done,” Rose said, adding that she has participated in giveback events since she was in high school at Sacred Heart, a private, all-girls high school where, she said, she first learned about the “value of sisterhood.”

When her Baldwin home was destroyed by a fire caused by Superstorm Sandy, Rose turned to her network of fellow female scholars for support.

She began staying after school for late hours studying with her friends, and this, she told students, was key to her academic success.

“I really started thriving then,” she said, urging the students to follow in her footsteps by seeking out friends and clubs to volunteer with.

Rose has only strengthened her connections to fellow female scholars, she told the students.

Rose said the pivotal decision the students need to make for them to reach their dreams is to believe in themselves.

“Don’t say no to yourself before someone says no to you,” Rose said.

“Keep trying, keep striving, be confidence tin who you are … there is absolutely no one on this planet who is like you, you guys are all beautiful and smart in your own ways,” she said.

She pledged for Alpha Kappa Alpha, a historically Black sorority, during her time at Harvard, where she studied government and women’s and gender studies after being accepted into every Ivy League school besides Columbia, confident that she wanted to leave New York for her law school education.

Her path took a surprising turn last summer, when she received a random message about going on a television show. After speaking with the person, a producer, and learning that the program was “The Bachelor,” she agreed to appear on the show, which the producer

explained reached out to her due to her impressive array of experiences and academic successes.

“It’s been a whirlwind ever since,” Rose, a contestant on the 26th season of the show, said, adding that she is grateful that it led her to the opportunity to donate the dresses.

But Rose used the opportunity to urge the students in attendance to focus on three aspects of their experience as female scholars: sisterhood, faith and confidence.

nology based education because the organization believes the effects of this type of education go beyond the classroom.

“Career and technology education can give your child what’s needed to succeed for life: technical skills, academic skills and employability skills. In addition, career and technical education helps students see how what they’re learning applies to the needs of employers,” a separate statement on the organization website reads.

A total of 34 students from schools in the Sewanhaka Central High School District participated at the SkillsUSA Area 6 Regional Competition, which was held at Suffolk Community College on March 22.

The goal of SkillsUSA, a nonprofit national education association that serves middle school, high school and college and postsecondary students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, is that it “empowers its members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens” according to a statement from the organization’s website.

“We improve the quality of our nation’s future skilled workforce through the development of SkillsUSA Framework skills that include personal, workplace and technical skills grounded in academics. Our vision is to produce the most highly skilled workforce in the world, providing every member the opportunity for career success,” SkillsUSA continues in the statement.

District students excelled and were recognized for their accomplishments in several categories at the event.

In the “Promotional Bulletin Board” category, Sewanhaka High School students Julissa Cruz-Benavides, Magaly Beltran and Lydia Braun earned first place.

Hofstra lacrosse seeks a little CAA success

After defeating Fairfield to close the regular season last year on a Friday night, the Hofstra men’s lacrosse team gathered in Margiotta Hall the following afternoon to await its postseason fate needing a Towson loss to Drexel in order to reach the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament.

With hopes looking bleak when Towson led by four goals late in the third quarter, Hofstra’s seniors suddenly learned their careers were in fact not over yet when Drexel stormed back for a 12-11 win. The Pride then took advantage of the surprise CAA tournament appearance with a semifinal upset of top-seeded Delaware before falling in the conference finals to that same Drexel team that resurrected its season a week earlier.

“You live and die by every goal and you start to become a fan rather than a coach because your future is out of your hands,” said 16th-year Hofstra head coach Seth Tierney of the scene watching Drexel-Towson. “It was an array of emotions.”

Tierney hopes this year the Pride will be able to wrap up one of the four available CAA tourney spots on the field and not have to rely on external help. Hofstra opened the CAA schedule with a 12-10 defeat at Fairfield last Saturday.

The CAA schedule gives Hofstra a fresh start after an up and down non-conference season where the Pride battled a number of injuries. The Pride entered CAA play with a 10-9 overtime loss at Providence College where sophomore attackman Gerard Kane tallied five assists, graduate student midfielder James Philbin scored a hat-trick and red-shirt freshman Rory Jones registered four points.

The 6-2 Kane, an Ohio State transfer, has emerged as Hofstra’s leading scorer with 17 goals and 11 assists.

Seniors Matt Elder and Dylan McIntosh are also offensive threats.

Junior goalie Mac Gates, a San Francisco native, has stepped up in net to anchor the defense in front of starting defensemen Tom Ford, Tim Hegarty and Bryan McIntosh. Gates recorded 17 saves in a 8-6 loss at Villanova on March 5.

Following a road game at Delaware this Saturday, Hofstra hosts Drexel in its CAA home opener on April 16 at 3 p.m.

“It showed how resilient our team was last year to get big wins and find ourselves in the NCAA Tournament,” Smith said. “It was an incredible experience and it makes our team motivated to get back there.”

Whelan, a graduate student, has emerged as a leader of the offense at attack in her final season of college lacrosse. The former Long Beach High School standout leads Hofstra in both goals and assists and tallied seven points in a 12-9 loss to Vanderbilt on March 20.

Junior midfielder Taylor Mennella has also emerged as an offensive threat with a four-goal performance in a 16-9 win at Marist on March 11. Graduate student mid-

fielder Arrianna Esposito,senior attacker Erin Demek and sophomore midfielder Kerry Walser are also stepping up as scoring options.

The Hofstra defense has been a big strength this season led by senior goalie Jess Smith, who tallied 14 saves in a 15-11 loss to 22nd-ranked UConn on March 26. The close features senior Wantagh High School product Anna Kaufmann, Kendall Smith, Brynn Hepting and Shannon Boyle, who was an All-CAA second team selection last year.

Hofstra went 6-4 in non-conference play, which included a competitive game with local rival and then sixthranked Stony Brook before falling 12-6 on March 18. The Pride began the CAA schedule with a 17-12 loss to 12thranked James Madison last Saturday. Demek had three points.

After an April 13 game at Drexel, Hofstra hosts Towson on April 16 at noon.

“I think essentially the only way to make a difference in our community is to be a Democrat in the Assembly,” he previously told the Herald. “Being a member of the majority, you can accomplish your goals.”

Lobl would work with “anyone and anybody,” he said, setting his sights on amending the bail reform law, supporting tougher penalties for hate crimes, delivering as much Covid-19 relief for businesses in the district, and fighting for equal funding for private schools.

Both Brown and Lobl have had their

issues, however. Brown, for example, was one of the six Town of Hempstead Industrial Development Agency board members who resigned in 2016 over an approved PILOT — payment in lieu of taxes — agreement for a Valley Stream business that reportedly raised taxes for residents. Brown pointed to a 2019 state comptroller’s report vindicating the IDA, and pointed the finger instead at the school district.

Lobl was identified as the person who approved what was considered an incendiary flyer that suggested Cuomo’s 2018 Democratic primary opponent, Cynthia Nixon, was antisemitic and supported the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement, which implored colleges and governments to stop doing business with Israel.

The battle to succeed Melissa “Missy” Miller in the Assembly kicks off what appears to be a much busier-than-usual off-year election year — when there is no presidential race — with fellow Cedarhurst residents Ari Brown and David Lobl facing off in a special election.

Early voting runs through April 5, with the election itself two days later.

Miller, a Republican, was appointed to the Town of Hempstead. She replaced fellow Atlantic Beach resident Bruce Blakeman, now Nassau County executive.

Brown, 54 — a longtime village trustee currently serving as deputy mayor — looks to keep the seat Republican. He served on Cedarhurst’s zoning board between 1998 and 2001, a position aligning with his construction background. He joined the village board immediately after, becoming deputy mayor in 2019.

That same year he was appointed chair of the Architectural Review Board.

“I am eager to put my experience to work in the New York State Assembly,” Brown previously told the Herald. “Most of all, I am committed to be a sound and sensible voice in the face of the extreme politics that have taken hold in Albany.”

Brown, whose name also appears on the Conservative Party line, says he plans to take a firm stand against attempts to defund the police as well as bail reform.

Molloy College will soon become Molloy University

Rockville Centre’s largest educational institution will soon have a new name.

Molloy College has officially earned university status from the New York State Board of Regents, allowing the Dominican institution to adopt the Molloy University moniker beginning June 1. It’s the culmination of work university officials have conducted for more than a decade.

Founded in 1955 by the Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville, Molloy is known for its strong nursing program that has been especially important during the coronavirus pandemic. Molloy is a private institution with roughly 3,500 undergraduate and 1,500 graduate students.

College president James Lentini unveiled a new logo for Molloy last week, which keeps the school’s burgundy lion mascot, but is now enclosed by an offwhite “M” and “U.” This is essentially full circle for Lentini, who said university status was discussed even when he interviewed for his job back in 2019.

“Some of the regents finally softened,” Lentini told the Herald. “I’m probably lucky with my timing a little bit, but I was involved in lobbying pretty hard with our regents.”

The name might be changing, but Lentini believes Molloy’s character will remain. Right now, there are no announced plans for the school to expand its current campus, at least when it comes to existing Rockville Centre real estate.

Still, becoming Molloy University is something Jeff Greenfield — a longtime Rockville Centre resident and a 19-year member of the college’s board of trustees —believes will add value to the degrees of past, present and future students.

“It’s very gratifying to see the mission of the sisters who founded the college fulfilled,” Greenfield said, by upgrading Molloy’s status to a university.

But Molloy’s work isn’t over, Lentini said. Far from it.

The next goal for the soon-to-be university is to tailor its nursing programs to the needs of partners like Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside and Catholic Health, which runs Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre.

“If we have (programs), we’re trying to make them more robust,” Lentini said.

“If we don’t have them, we’re going to be developing those.

“We’ve been a college. Now I want us to think like a university.”

Polk Street focuses on respect

Pre-K students at Polk Street School in Franklin Square participated last month in a “radiate respect” activity, as respect was the “character virtue” focused on during both February and March by the school, according to a statement released by the Franklin Square Union Free School District.

The Franklin Square school decided to hold the respect-focused activity “To encourage students to respect themselves and others,” the district said.

Working with students that were part of their “buddy classes,” older grades that were paired with the younger students, Pre-K students began

the month-long activity by brainstorming different ways to display respect during school days.

After this, the students jotted their ideas down on a paper sunray. These sunrays were then decorated with images depicting respect, as well as images inspired by a book that was read to students in class and drawings made by students and their helpers from the buddy classes.

Each buddy class added their sunray throughout the month to what is now known as the “Radiate Respect” sun, which is displayed outside the Polk Street School cafeteria.

The deadline for community project federal funding requests for the upcoming fiscal year through U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks’ office is April 15 at 5 p.m.

Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered, officials said.

Meeks, a Democrat, represents Elmont, Valley Stream among other communities on Long Island and in New York City.

“In southeast Queens, Nassau County and in the Rockaways, we are still rebuilding our economy as we overcome the Covid-19 pandemic,” Meeks said, in a release.

“My office will be accepting and reviewing requests for projects through a transparent process that will provide adequate and necessary funding for projects and activities that have a direct impact on New York’s 5th Congressional District.”

Rotary to the rescue Local organization sends needed supplies to Poland for Ukrainians displaced by war

The Central Nassau County Rotary Club donated 25,000 pounds worth of supplies to Ukrainians displaced by the Russian invasion.

The organization started a clothing drive during the first week of March, setting up collection boxes in both the Franklin Square and West Hempstead public libraries.

“Our Rotary Club, when seeing all the mothers and children fleeing their home country, all the members wanted to do something to help the people of Ukraine,” said Bill Youngfert, rotary club co-president.

Volunteers leading the drive, which ended the last week of March, shipped boxes of clothing, blankets and medical supplies to Poland, where it was distrib-

uted to displaced Ukrainian families.

The response of residents to the clothing and blanket drive was overwhelming, Youngfert said.

When Youngfert and fellow co-president Carl Gerrato took a trip on March 7 to the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church in Lindenhurst, they discovered that the church was overloaded with donations and unable to accept any more.

Next, they located Addy Sandler, a businessman from Farmingdale with a warehouse who was accepting donations and having his workers organize, box and load pallets of supplies for shipment to Ukrainians through Poland.

Beginning this week, the rotary club is only accepting medical supplies and toiletries at donation boxes located in the Franklin Square and West Hempstead public libraries, officials said.

Sewanhaka High School senior Dillan Powell was recognized at the meeting for assisting a fellow student who was struck by a car on Tulip Avenue in January.

Powell, a member of the Stewart Manor Fire Department, immediately provided first aid to the student, maintaining control of the situation until school nurses arrived at the scene. Powell also assisted the nurses and provided

vital information to police officers and EMTs from Floral Park upon their arrival at the scene.

Elmont Memorial High School student Precious Ademokun was recognized at the meeting for performing in February with the American Choral Directors Association.

A member of the Eastern Region Gospel Honor Choir, Ademokun prepared with renowned educator and gospel composer Raymond Wise in preparation for her performance at the event.

Q. I recently got a “framing” inspection for carpentry. The inspector asked me to get all electrical wiring and plumbing pipes in before he would look at the way the wood framing was done. Then he rejected the work because of the way the beams and columns went into the walls. We had steel beams put in so we could remove all the inside walls and open the kitchen up to the living and dining rooms. It’s now one big open space. The carpenters cut the wall tops and bottoms so the beam and column could go in. Is there a way to fix this, and why is it so important? The inspector said the architect would need to write a letter explaining the fix.

A. Your inspector is looking out for you. He didn’t accept the work because the interior walls that were removed had an important role to play in holding your house together. Now that there are no walls running at right angles to the outside wall, the strength of the exterior walls has been reduced, enough so they can waiver in a high wind onte eeper and compromise the home. In other words, the long, unbraced wall can collapse in a heavy storm.

From flying in a plane, you may have heard of wind shear. It’s caused by pulsing crosswinds that work like a giant hammer, pounding directly at the wall’s surface, like pounding a big drum face, and is referred to as positive pressure. The wall is also brushed by winds that run parallel to its surface, which causes a suction known as negative pressure.

Together, the pulsing is tugging at the wall and pushing it, causing opposite reactions that, if the wall isn’t properly braced, can make it come apart and wrench away from the rest of the building.

By cutting the continuous top and bottom wall “plates” that run around the whole structure, the wall is no longer attached at these points. That’s one reason why windows and doors receive extra support around the openings. The “weakest links” are the places where the connection has been severed or removed altogether, as when steel beams and columns are inserted into the wall and the wood has been cut away.

Some argue that the steel beam and column actually brace the structure, but only if they are attached to the surrounding dissimilar wood. In most cases, when an inspection is done, the lack of understanding of the wind shear process is revealed, and hopefully it is discovered before a disaster and not after. This can be repaired by making the wood walls connect again, using steel sheets, steel strapping or plywood that bridges the wall studs on either side of the steel column and beam. The plywood will stick out if the wall is only as thin as the column, but with large wall studs, the plywood can be recessed to be even with the rest of the carpentry.

hether you knew it or not, there are many types of football games. According to Wikipedia, the roster includes Jorkyball, cycle-ball, football tennis, blind football, power chair football, rugby, traditional American football and my favorite, political football. While most of the others (except the gridiron variety) need an explanation, almost everybody knows what a political football is.

And one of the best examples is the price of gasoline.

JERRY Regardless of the party in power, KREMER gas prices are used regularly as a line of attack on the incumbent leader of the country. Over the past 40-plus years, Presidents Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama and now Biden have been the targets of public anger over the price of gasoline. And in most of those instances, the attack on the White House has been nothing more than a cheap shot for political gain.

I

One of the major causes of sharp hikes in gas prices is wars or political upheaval on far-away continents. In 1973, the ArabIsraeli war caused prices at the pump to skyrocket. That was followed by the IranIraq War, which started in 1980. In the 1990s, the Persian Gulf War made motorists go crazy when the price per gallon spiked. While Saudi Arabia pretends to be our good friend and is always seeking more jets and defensive weapons, the Saudis periodically decide to cut back on oil production, which hits American drivers in the wallets and pocketbooks.

Another enemy of the gasoline consumer is Mother Nature. Drivers in New York may pay little attention to disasters or climate-related events in Louisiana or Texas, but an explosion at an offshore oil rig, or a major hurricane, can cause longterm disruption of gas prices. I’ve always wondered why, within minutes after a hurricane slams into one of those key Southern states, the stations around here up their prices. That anticipatory action isn’t due to a shortage; it’s just an example of greed.

For as long as I can remember, the price of gas has gone up and down during the spring and winter seasons, respectively. The jump in price as the weather warms is actually the result of the industry practice of changing the grade of the fuel to adjust to the climate.

Summer gasoline costs more to produce, because it’s a special blend that is less polluting and can adapt to the heat. Even though this has been going on for the past 30 years, there are always politicians somewhere waiting to jump on their opponents to cast partisan blame.

Another reason for the summer jump in prices is that around April, most oil companies shut down their facilities for maintenance, and are slow to prepare their production for the increased demand from vacationers starting in June. If you’re looking for someone else to blame for the summer rise in the price per gallon, it’s you, me, your neighbors and countless other Americans. Most of us start taking time off in June and many of us take driving vacations, and that trend continues right through Labor Day.

Over a recent Saturday-night dinner, a few of my friends started complaining about the price of gasoline, and were quick to blame it on President Biden. Because he sits in the Oval Office, he’s the natural target for fuel-cost outrage. But many people forget the fact that the coronavirus pandemic caused a sharp cutback in production, and when the public decided that it was time to get out and start driving again, there wasn’t enough gasoline to meet that sudden burst of demand. That was another open invitation for the refineries to dramatically raise their prices.

As we’re seeing, virtually every basic commodity, from corn flakes to car tires, is becoming more costly, but the easiest target for a politician seeking to get a few headlines is the price of gas. There’s no more popular political football, but it’s tossed around for all the wrong reasons.

Facts, fiction and when to fish for shad

’m afraid if you didn’t cut your hair in March, potty train your 2-year-old, castrate your farm animals, quit smoking or get married, you probably missed the optimal moment for such events. That is according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, which suggests auspicious dates for various activities, based on the phases of the moon and the alignment of the stars.

The almanac, launched in 1792, is now my go-to reliable source of information, meteorological predicRANDI tion and general good-natured kibKREISS itzing. I used to read newspapers and watch TV news, but the OFA claims to be 80 percent accurate, and that’s good enough for me.

I’m going with the annual pamphlet that tells me when to plant my tomatoes, based on the tides.

If you’ve never read the Almanac, it is now available on Kindle, and as an act of personal devotion to readers, I purchased my own copy for $5.39 so I could write this tribute to a publication that has informed and amused folks for 230 years.

It made my day — no, it made my month to read a compilation of anecdotes, folklore, science, magical thinking, histo-

ry, recipes, weather forecasts, farming information, ephemera, origins of month names, friggatriskaidekaphobia trivia (that’s the fear of Friday the 13th), animal signs of the Chinese zodiac and a windfall of homey, heart-warming, salt-of-theearth stories about good people doing kind things.

The almanac offers a total, feel-good, not-amoment-too-soon distraction.

According to the OFA, this month we will have a Full Pink Moon, which heralds the blossoming of wild ground phlox, one of the first spring flowers. It is also known as the Moon when the Geese Lay Eggs, for obvious reasons.

If you want to know how much paint you need for a room, or how much wallpaper, or when to go fishing for shad, check out the OFA. One section offers famous last words: “Is it The Fourth?” Thomas Jefferson, our third president and the author of the Declaration of Independence, who died on July 4, 1826.

The OFA does not limit its predictions to the weather or farming.

It sees in our future fake leather clothing and shoes made from mushroom roots, jeans recycled for housing insulation and shoes made from soda bottles.

In the dead-and-stuffed department, I learned that Comanche, a horse belonging to an officer killed at Little Bighorn in 1876, was given a full funeral, with military honors, in 1890, and then sent to the University of Kansas to be stuffed. He can be seen there today.

Also, Owney the terrier, an official U.S. Mail dog, was stuffed and displayed at the 1904 World’s Fair.

Have you seen the signs of spring?

According to the almanac, worms begin to emerge from the ground. Indeed, the March moon was the Full Worm Moon.

Since ancient times, people have used flora as indicators of when the time is right to plant. For example, when the crocus blooms, it’s the cue to plant radishes, parsnips and spinach.

A point of information: Some forwardthinking farmers and ranchers are inviting volunteers to do farm chores for increased fitness. (Sounds like a Tom Sawyer scam to me.)

A new thing: mobile grocery stores in trucks that visit numerous neighborhoods. People shop inside the van, which then goes back to restock and then moves on.

According to the OFA, pets will soon wear devices that allow them to interface with their veterinarians. Realtors will sell houses with pets included.

I recommend the Old Farmer’s Almanac for its forecasts and arcane information and down-home good humor. It is uplifting and entertaining, fascinating and funny. It was the best $5.39 I’ve spent in some time.

Election season is sooner than you think

M

any voters may believe election season gets under way in early fall and ends on Election Day in November. That’s the way it might have been with secretive behind-the-scenes maneuvering and fundraising mainly done at gatherings for political party insiders.

But with the advent of digital marketing, email blasts, social media platforms and texting, there is a constant barrage of electioneering done year-round. And now there is also early voting.

With primary elections now in June instead of September, election season sneaks up on the unsuspecting electorate like an early-summer rainstorm. This year’s primary is June 28, when many will have just finished with high school graduations and may be planning their summer vacations.

In other words, election season is closer than you realize.

To whet voters’ appetites in what is considered an off-year election season — because there is no presidential race — candidates have been busy. Like Gov. Kathy Hochul. The former lieutenant governor became New York’s chief executive last August after Andrew Cuomo resigned, and became the de facto leader of the state’s Democratic Party.

However, she faces an internal challenge from U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi, whose congressional district, as it is currently configured, includes parts of Nassau County.

And there are eight candidates, from both sides of the aisle, vying to replace Suozzi in the House of Representatives — a field that widened after redistricting stretched his congressional coverage area through the eastern edges of Queens, the Bronx and Westchester County. (A recent

On successive days in February, U.S. Rep. Kathleen Rice and State Sen. Todd Kaminsky — both Democrats — announced that they would not seek reelection. Five Democrats are running to replace Rice, while Republicans have coalesced around a single candidate.

There are two candidates running for Kaminsky’s seat.

Even as you read this, there was a special election on Thursday, after the Herald went to press, that included early voting that started March 28. Ari Brown and David Lobl, both from Cedarhurst, sought to succeed Melissa “Missy” Miller in the State Assembly. Miller’s district covers 11 communities and parts of another in southwest Nassau.

There will be another election for the same seat later this year.

What does all this mean to you, the average voter, and likely not a political insider? It translates into a much busierthan-expected election cycle in which impactful decisions are being made.

Voters need to pay attention, and register to vote. You use your voice by casting a ballot for the candidate of your choice.

While Long Islanders are definitely feeling the effects of recent global events, I would like to bring attention to the fact that countries around the world are dealing with a lot more than soaring gas prices.

Most have their own websites, on which they share what they stand for — and what they stand against. And beginning with the June primary and leading to the general election Nov. 8, you will have every chance to show up at the polls and make your statement by casting a ballot.

Every vote matters. And being registered to vote, and marking that ballot, is the one significant way in which you can truly make an impact, whether it be in a primary — which is critical and maybe even decisive — or in the general election.

You also can make a statement by doing nothing and simply sitting on the sidelines. If candidates you support win, then no harm, no foul. But if they lose, you have no right to complain.

But most disturbing of all was the fact that President Biden made race and gender his primary criteria in selecting his nominee. Reverse discrimination is still discrimination, regardless of whom it benefits. Ironically, if Biden had just limited his criteria to legal experience and competency, Jackson might still have ended up as his choice, but without the bad taste his criteria left in the mouths of many.

Even if she is appointed, Jackson will always have the cloud of Biden’s egotism hanging over her head, his insistence on pointing out that, “Hey, it was me who was responsible for the first Black woman on the court!” History would be aware of that without Biden's self-serving pat on the back.

Gross raises many legitimate points in her column, but I have to disagree with her implication that Biden’s nomination of a Black woman “brought howls” for other than very legitimate reasons. Yes, “structural racism” has existed, and continues to exist in America, particularly in certain areas, but that is a wrong that has been, and is being, remedied legislatively and in the courts. To imply that only people of color may rightfully address this issue is insulting and racist in itself.
