It’s not just about the robots. That’s what Jack Chen, a teacher at Sewanhaka High School and the adviser for the Central High School District robotics club, said about what members of the team known as the RoboPandas took away from the experience of building robots in preparation for the FIRST Tech Challenge Long Island Regional Championships last Saturday. “There are lots of opportunities to learn how to work cooperatively and as part of a team,” Chen said of the larger principles that drive the club. This year’s Sewanhaka robotics team — made up of students from Sewanhaka, H. Frank Carey, Floral Park and New Hyde Park
high schools — qualified for and competed in the tech challenge at Syosset High School. Sewanhaka was one of 16 high school squads that took part, and it teamed up with the Stony Brook School to win the main event. Each year, participating teams compete in a different game. This year it was “Freight Frenzy,” in which teams and their robots were operating in an imaginary world where they had to “navigate a complex transportation system by traversing barriers and racing against time to load and deliver essential items to those who need them most,” according to a description on FIRST’s website. Each team, and its robot, was paired with another school or district in an “alliance,” and the pair that scored the most points against another alliance during a 150-second match, Continued on page 3
