pandemic raged across the country
H O M E T O W N
and especially in downstate
New York, the Herald’s editorial team undertook what became a monumental project: to feature, each week, the frontline heroes who were — and are — keeping us safe and providing for our daily sustenance. These “Hometown Heroes” are doctors, nurses, EMTs, firefighters, supermarket employees, sanitation workers and more. Never did we imagine at the time that, two years later, the pandemic would

be with us now, roiling our workplaces and still causing widespread illness and death. In 2021, we continued, week after week, to profile our essential workers

ount Sinai South Nassau is pleased to sponsor the Herald’s Hometown
Heroes, honoring individuals on the front lines of the Covid-19 pandemic, who put themselves at risk to ensure the safety, health and security of us all in the face of a highly contagious disease which has no known cure. We commend them for the work they’ve done and continue to do throughout this pandemic. The perseverance, creativity and compassion demonstrated by this outstanding group have inspired our staff as a whole to forge ahead with confidence to address and meet the community needs that are before us with vigilance, compassion and a true desire to serve the greater good. Whether caring for those who are sick, or supporting those who do, giving of their
own resources to aid front-liners and patients, or finding ways to celebrate and thank the efforts of staff, the community spirit these honorees have demonstrated during these dark days has been nothing short of remarkable; our thanks to the Herald for recognizing them.

mourning and fear. At the same time, these Heroes demonstrated resilience in the face of unbearable hardship, and kindness to desperate strangers. They spoke of our shared humanity at a time of collective tragedy.
Thank you for caring.
Although we began the Heroes series focusing primarily on health care workers, we expanded it over time to include teachers and principals, custodians and business owners, and many, many people who formed ad hoc organizations and small nonprofits to address the needs of their neighbors during the pandemic. All of us must remember that the people most endangered by the coronavirus are our frontline essential workers. For their sakes, and the sakes

of your loved ones’ health, get vaccinated if you have not already done so. The worst of times often bring out the best in everyday people. Our Hometown Heroes lived up to their callings and made our lives safer and healthier. For that, we will forever be grateful. Let us hope and pray that the infection rate will continue to drop, as it has in recent weeks, so we can all return to our pre-pandemic lives.
