Near-freezing temperatures and a Nordic wind didn’t keep an enthusiastic crowd from celebrating the start of the holiday season at the annual tree and menorah lighting outside Hempstead Village Hall on Dec. 4.
Hempstead’s state-of-the-art mobile stage staunchly spanned James A. Garner Way.
Mayor Waylyn Hobbs Jr., Deputy Mayor Jeffery Daniels, Trustee William Whitaker, Legislator Olena Nicks, and Board of Education Trustee Joylette Williams each briefly greeted the crowd.
Twenty-five third-to-fifth-grade students from Rhodes Academy Elementary School filed onto the stage and stood calm-
ly while their music director, Courtney Dunn, named the upcoming events for which the children had prepared.
“They have been working so hard to prepare for this event,” said Dunn, “and for their winter concert on December 17 at 3:45 at Rhodes Academy (270 Washington St.). They’re also going to be performing at the Winter Wonderland on December 13 at Hempstead High School.”
The children then belted out “My Favorite Things,” in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the movie release of “The Sound of Music,” and romped through a medley called “Winter Fantasy.” The audience clapped and cheered.
The crowd reaction was no less enthusiastic when several young dancers from Joseph A. McNeil School, with unflagging
Cradle of Aviation welcomes Katie Ledecky Olympic swimming gold medalist is a Catholic Health ambassador
By ALYSSA R. GRIFFIN agriffin@liherald.com
Catholic Health joined teamed up last week with the legendary swimmer Katie Ledecky, a world record holder and a 14-time Olympic medalist, for a presentation at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City.
Ledecky, a New York Times bestselling author and the most decorated female swimmer in history, spoke to nearly 250 area Catholic middle and high school students, many of them swimmers, on Dec. 1.
Welcomed by Andy Parton, president of the Cradle of Aviation, they crowded into the museum’s Catholic Health Sky Theater Planetarium to listen to Ledecky’s discussion with Dr. Patrick O’Shaughnessy, president and CEO of Catholic Health, the nonprofit health care system.
Ledecky was just 15, and the youngest member of the U.S. Olympic team, when
she won her first gold medal at the 2012 Games in London.
“I can think of no better human being than Katie Ledecky to personally inspire us with her journey,” O’Shaughnessy said. She shared some of the highlights of that journey, and discussed her role, since July, as a health and wellness ambassador for Catholic Health. She graduated from Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic school in Bethesda, Maryland, in 2015.
“And I think I just really love all the messaging and the support that Catholic Health gives to this community, and the resources that you provide, and the opportunities — and, of course, the health care as well,” Ledecky told O’Shaughnessy. “So just to help spread that message and be a voice for healthy living, it’s such a great match, and I’m happy that this relationship has brought me here today, and we have a lot more on the horizon.”

Library lights tree to support cancer foundation
Students brighten ceremony with holiday songs
By REINE BETHANY Special to the HERALD
For the third consecutive year, the Hempstead Public Library hosted a Christmas tree lighting in its lobby to support Betty’s Breast Cancer Foundation, which provides guidance services to those affected by breast cancer.
The pink-decorated tree stands near the library’s central checkout desk. Families from the community gathered around the tree under the warm, friendly lights of the library lobby on Dec. 4 at 6 p.m.
Vincent Bautista, music director at the David Paterson Elementary School, brought a dozen welltrained young singers to participate in the ceremony.
Tthe library staff for their support. She also pointed to supportive partnerships from organizations such as the Long Island Clean Energy Hub and the Yes We Can Community Center in New Cassel.
“Tonight is about community, about unity, about hope,” Escobar said. “That’s the message of our foundation and that’s the message that the Hempstead Public Library brings to the community as well.”

Jacqueline Escobar, a Hempstead reference librarian and secretary to the board for Betty’s Breast Cancer Foundation, opened the program. She thanked Library Director Irene Duszkiewicz and
Estefany Garay, also a foundation board member, is the executive director of the Yes We Can Center in New Cassel, and event coordinator for the Town of North Hempstead.
“We were able to allocate books and goodies for the children to go home with tonight,” Garay said. “I’m really excited to be part of this event.”
Betty Rodriguez, founder and director of the foundation, included Hempstead’s families, the Hempstead Public Library and a growing group of partnering organizations in her
brief address to the crowd, saying, “I thank you all so much for your amazing, amazing support.”
The students then presented an enthusiastic medley of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and “Jingle Bell Rock,” after which Rodriguez threw the switch to light the tree. The families and children then trooped down to the library’s community room for some easy holiday fellowship, with snacks and gifts.
Rodriguez created Betty’s Breast Cancer Foundation in 2010. Her specific focus is support for Spanish-speaking women affected by breast cancer, though the foundation’s services extend to the general public.
Annually, the foundation assists at least 350 women with mammograms for early detection, as well as aid in navigating the health system. It also conducts at least 100 breast cancer education seminars in Spanish per year, and holds wellness events to foster social connections and self-care.

Rabbi Abe Lebovic of Hempstead’s synagogue, Congregation Beth Israel (established in 1915), joined by members of his congregation, spoke and sang ancient words of blessing as he lit each bulb in the large village menorah.
“A little bit of light pushes away a lot of darkness,” said Lebovic, quoting a traditional saying. “And there is no year in my life that I understood it more than this year, because I became a father!”
When the blessing concluded, Hobbs handed seven-year-old Kairo Johnson, of Hempstead, the “on” button to illuminate countless white lights on the Christmas tree, nativity scene, and every hedge ringing the village hall lawn. Moments later, Santa Claus hopped off a Hempstead Fire Department truck to hand out packets of candy and small toys to eager children, while their parents enjoyed snacks and hot chocolate at tables set up for the occasion.

Ledecky speaks to student swimmers
She also spoke of her plans for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, and offered the young swimmers in the audience some advice. She swims 20 to 25 hours a week, she said, and spends another five to six hours in the gym. “All those hours are very important, and that sounds like a lot of time,” Ledecky said, “but really, it’s the hours away from the pool and away from the gym that are just as important. I consider those hours part of my training as well, because if I’m not doing the things I need to do outside of the pool or outside of the gym, then I’m not going to be able to be at my best when I’m physically doing the work.”
