Four projects received unanimous committee approval: Complete Streets and Traffic Calming, which will redesign Main Street and Fulton Avenue to modify traffic flow, create safer pedestrian spaces, and add trees and other greenery; the Small Project Grant Program, to assist downtown businesses with upgrading outside appearances and internal structures; 150 Bedell Street, Innovation Hub, a technology center run by the nonprofit Morrison Mentors; and 257 Main Street —MixedUse Development, a seven-story apartment and retail building that will fill an empty lot on North Main and include attainable housing. The discussion about 257 Main Street typified the committee’s careful examination of each proposal before voting. “What would elevate this above other proposed housing projects?” asked Sarah Brewster, chief director of services and operations for Círculo de la Hispanidad.
“It fulfills the goals of mixed-use developments, diverse housing options, and growing the local tax base,” said Charlotte Moore, a DRI consultant who is a senior analyst with BJH Advisors, specialists in urban planning. “The village has worked with the developer, Rashid Walker, who is from Hempstead,” Daniels added, “and he’s ready to go — a person from the community doing something for the community.” Village resident Rosslynn Pieters participated in the DRI process by submitting a supplement to the proposal labeled Complete Streets and Traffic Calming. “Simple improvements like cleaner storefronts, safe crossings, better lighting, clean sidewalks, benches, and greenery can completely transform how residents and visitors experience our community,” Pieters said. “These changes will bring energy and pride back to the Village of Hempstead.”
Which projects are eligible for DRI funding? eligible DRi projects fall into four categories: 1. Public improvements (such as safer, beautified streetscapes, refreshed parks, and green infrastructure) 2. Small project grant funding to support businesses with façade improvements, building renovations, business assistance, or public art. 3. Downtown branding and market-
ing projects to provide residents, tourists, investors, developers and visitors with information and visual guides in Hempstead Village. 4. new developments to fill in underused lots or rehabilitate existing downtown buildings, resulting in employment opportunities, diverse housing choices or other community services. — Reine Bethany
