Gala raises funds for expanded cardiac care

Mount Sinai South Nassau’s annual Soirée Under the Stars gala lit up The Lannin in Eisenhower Park on Saturday as supporters, staff, and community leaders gathered to raise funds for the expansion of advanced cardiac care on the South Shore.

the residents of the South Shore of Nassau County from the Rockaways to the Massapequas. .

ABBA Leadership Center celebrates 20 years Group

aims to reduce criminal recidivism

Special to the Herald

With testimonials, citations and thanksgiving, ABBA Leadership Center Inc. marked 20 years of successful ministry to men, women and youth enmeshed in the criminal justice system.

About 200 attendees gathered to celebrate at Verdi’s of Westbury on Oct. 30. ABBA’s executive director, Reggie Benjamin, received commendatory citations from state, county and village officials.

ABBA is an acronym for Able Body of Believer’s Alliance. Benjamin, 69, formally incorporated the organization on Jan. 26, after observing the relationship between fatherlessness and recidivism, especially in the lives of male prisoners.

OThe starting point for ABBA’s mentoring became the concept of God as an unfailing heavenly father. Building on the spiritual concept, Benjamin simultaneously arranged practical job training, assistance in job hunting, classes in financial skills development — and the critical element of longterm, supportive oversight by Benjamin and his staff.

“It takes a village to raise a dream,” added Benjamin’s son, Tarell Huddleson, ABBA’s director of job development. “We turn youth into leaders.” Benjamin and Huddleson honored six other social support organizations that have partnered with ABBA or shared its mission across time.

One honoree was the Hempstead Cluster of H.E.V.N. (Help End Violence Now), an anti-gang outreach founded in 1998. Its current director, Rev. Lynnwood Deans, has pastored Bethlehem of Judea Church in Hempstead since 1975.

Bethlehem of Judea has hosted the offices of ABBA since its inception.

nce you make a commitment, I will hold you to it.

The other honorees were the Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County Inc.; United Way of Long Island; the Leadership Training Institute of Nassau County; Empowering Young Professionals, founded and directed by Luis Mendez; and Cultivating Lives, founded and directed by LaShawn Lukes and Jammie Freeman.

Since then, hundreds of men and women have found gainful employment through ABBA, many of them on construction projects in Hempstead village. Thousands of families have benefited, including youth who have experienced ABBA’s encouraging outreach.

“Ninety percent of our youth ministry went to high school dropouts,” Benjamin said at last Thursday’s festivities. “Parents lack resources, so the kids are going to do something to get what they need. We try to take some pressure off those parents.”

A crowning touch to the evening was the revelation that ABBA is opening a new tworoom office in the massive former bus terminal at 100 Main St. in Hempstead on Nov. 18. The village government has designated the site for workforce development and business incubation.

Seated in the near-finished main office at 100 Main on Monday, Benjamin explained why his ministry generates such reliable results.

“I walk people through their struggles in life,” he said. “This population is not so disciplined about basic life skills like accountability and responsibility. They didn’t grow up with role models. When you don’t know better, you can’t do better.”

Caitlin Clark comes to Long Island

Caitlin Clark, the star point guard for the Indiana Fever, became the all-time leading scorer in NCAA Division I basketball, was selected first overall in the 2024 WNBA draft, was the league’s 2024 Rookie of the Year and has drawn thousands of new fans to women’s basketball.

On Oct. 29, hundreds of Long Island business leaders and basketball fans attended the Long Island Association’s annual fall luncheon to see Clark speak with LIA President and CEO Matt Cohen.

The LIA is nonprofit association working to ensure Long Island’s economic vitality. The luncheon usually highlights political or business leaders, but this year Clark, 23, spoke about her career and nonprofit work. It was her first visit to Long Island, but she is no stranger to New York, having made a number of TV appearances and played the 2024 WNBA champion New York Liberty at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

“Honestly New York is one of my favorite places to come and play,” she said. “The crowd they have is really fun, their fan base is absolutely incredible and they’ve got a great team.”

she said, has helped her navigate business decisions. “The biggest thing for me is working with brands that align with who I am,” she said. “Everything has my fingerprints on it. Everything we put out there I’m super proud of.”

Clark touched on her work with the Caitlin Clark Foundation, a nonprofit focused on youth empowerment through education, nutrition and sports. “It’s honestly my favorite part of what I get to do,” she said. The foundation organizes a large backpack giveaway, supports Central Iowa’s Boys and Girls club, and works to install new basketball courts in Des Moines and Indianapolis.

“Basketball was never my end-all beall,” Clark said. “Its still that way for me. It’s just what I love to do. Its crazy to think that this is my job.”

She emphasized the importance of surrounding yourself with supportive people who care about both your success

As a junior at the University of Iowa, Clark became known for “The Caitlin Clark effect” — a dramatic increase in popularity and revenue for women’s basketball that continued when she turned pro. “I just love basketball,” she said. “I love the grind of getting better. No matter what we achieved or what I achieved personally, I always wanted to get back in the gym and get better at it.”

Thank You, Veterans

and your well-being. “I’ve been very fortunate over the course of my career to be surrounded by a lot of really great teammates, coaches and a great support system that’s allowed me to do a lot of cool things,” she said.

Clark has sponsorships from Gatorade and Nike, and collaborates with Stanley. Her college marketing degree,

She did not comment on negotiations between the WNBA and the Women’s National Basketball Players Association on a new collective bargaining agreement after players opted out of the agreement. It was set to expire on Oct. 31, but both sides agreed to a 30-day extension for talks to continue. Players are concerned about pay, benefits and overall conditions in the league as the sport continues to grow.

For her part, Clark hopes to continue her career in Indianapolis and eventually help the Fever win a WNBA championship.

Philip Shuman, Vice President of The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, was honored as the Corporate Honoree for his leadership in managing the construction of the new Feil Family Pavilion — a cornerstone of the hospital’s $500 million capital expansion project. The pavilion, which houses the newly opened Fennessy Family Emergency Department, will soon include nine state-of-theart operating rooms to accommodate complex cardiac procedures.

Longtime benefactor Jeffrey Feil

received the prestigious Heart of the Hospital Award for his decades of philanthropic support. Debbie Jonason, RN, assistant nurse manager of Cardiovascular Services, received the Mary Pearson Award for her leadership and compassionate care; and Arthur Golbert, senior cardiac rehabilitation exercise physiologist, earned the Cupola Award for his commitment to helping patients rebuild their health through cardiac rehabilitation. Guests enjoyed a lively cocktail reception, dinner, and dancing to a 10-piece band under the stars, while celebrating the hospital’s continued growth and commitment to excellence in health care.

In the new offices of ABBA Leadership Center Inc., Reggie Benjamin will be able to expand his organization’s mentoring through podcasts, and accommodate remote as well as hands-on training for those who commit to ABBA’s life-changing principles.

New offices will expand ABBA’s outreach

ABBA’s job training includes basic OSHA certification for entry-level construction jobs. Benjamin advocates for his workers to be hired in local development projects such as the new Rhodes Academy for Humanities and the Arts on Washington Street, which opened in 2021, and the Extra Space Storage building on Greenwich Street.

Then he regularly visits the work sites to help resolve difficulties or misunderstandings between workers and developers.

“Once you make a commitment, I will hold you to it,” Benjamin said. “I make sure that developers stick to their community benefits agreements to hire locally. My workers know they are

watched and mentored. Now a lot of developers call me when they go to build because they know I’ll check on my guys.”

Men and women whose lives have been revolutionized by ABBA exert a positive community influence. “When thugs see a thug change, it has impact,” Benjamin stated bluntly. “Every week, I

get calls from guys who see what ABBA did for their friends.”

The ministry’s youth outreach is of special importance for its capacity to prevent young people from drifting into trouble.“We want to empower the local community,” Benjamin said. “The best way to avoid gentrification is to equip youth to take local opportunities.”

Funding provided to food banks amid federal shutdown

County Executive Bruce Blakeman declared a state of emergency on Monday in response to the federal government shutdown, announcing that Island Harvest and Long Island Cares will receive additional emergency funding to address a rise in food insecurity.

Blakeman said the move is intended to ensure that families relying on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits are not left without support while federal funding is stalled.

Food is a right.

“With the issues that are going on in Washington, D.C. right now, there are many people who are in jeopardy of not being able to feed themselves and their families. So we are trying to help and supplement the things that a lot of our great not-forprofits are doing here on Long Island,” he said.

The county will provide $50,000 per week to each of the two major regional food banks until SNAP benefits resume.

Roughly 31,450 Nassau households rely on SNAP.

Island Harvest CEO Randi Shubin Dresner said the support will go directly toward getting food into homes quickly.

“Food is a right,” she said. “We need

to be able to know that we’re going to be able to have access to a good, healthy meal. And these funds are going to allow us to purchase that kind of food and get it out into the community here in Nassau County really, really quickly.”

Long Island Cares CEO Katherine M. Fritz said the timing is critical for families already struggling.

“This is an important time in our lives on Long Island to make sure that we’re focused on the people — who are

struggling every day to make sure that their families have food on their table,” she said.

Information about local food pantries and soup kitchens is available on NassauCountyNY.gov.
