More than 200 attendees gathered in Denton Green Park last Saturday afternoon for the 2nd annual Black History Month Festival, hosted by the New Greater Hempstead Chamber of Commerce. Led by Chamber President LaShawn Lukes, the event showcased 49 local blackowned businesses and nonprofit corporations, who set up awning-covered booths along the blacktop pathway leading through the park. The afternoon’s activities began with a moment of reflection and unity, including a black solidarity prayer and a moment of silence invoked by radio personality James Hodge. Festival-goers were treated to a variety of free services, such as relaxing back and neck massages, acupuncture, and haircuts. Local health and wellness leaders offered valuable resources. Meanwhile, enticing aromas hovered around the booths of local food concerns, with the added touch of custom-made beverag-
This year’s festival took the theme “Spirit of Our Ancestors.” It particularly commemorated the black-owned businesses that flourished during the early 20th century, when former black slaves and their descendants developed comprehensive business communities. The most famous of these communities was in the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, widely known as the “Black Wall Street.” Tragically, it was destroyed in 1921 by Tulsa’s white population in a devastating riot, the pretext for which was an alleged offense of a black teenager against a white one. Undaunted, the Greenwood population rebuilt their community. A key highlight of the festival was a display called “Black Wall Street Time Capsules,” which provided a poignant journey through Tulsa’s Black Wall Street, pictured on storyboards in one of the tents. Attendees also viewed the rich legacy of black-owned businesses right in the Village of Hempstead. COntinued On Page 6

‘Epilepsy Unplugged’ sparks honest conversations The EPIC Family of Human Service Agencies — which includes the Epilepsy Foundation Long Island and the South Shore Guidance Center in Freeport — recently hosted Epilepsy Unplugged: Real Talk for Teens and Young Adults, a dynamic and heartfelt panel discussion at The Experience in Hauppauge. Designed to foster candid dialogue and connection among teens and young adults living with epilepsy, the event offered participants a rare opportunity to share personal stories, ask questions, and build a sense of community in an uplifting and empowering setting. “Teens and young adults with epilepsy often face unique emotional and social hurdles than others their age,” said Lisa Burch, president and CEO of the EPIC Family of Human Service Agencies. “Epilepsy Unplugged is about amplifying their voices, creating a supportive peer network and letting these individuals know they are not alone. We are proud to facilitate these vital conversations that nurture confidence and community.” One of the most powerful moments came during a panel featuring Emma F., Daniel H., John M., and Madison S., four young adults who shared their personal journeys with epilepsy. They spoke about how the Epilepsy Foundation Long Island has supported them and their families in navigating the challenges of living with the condition. Their candid reflections on both obstacles and triumphs inspired the audience and sparked meaningful conversation, creating a shared sense of strength, understanding, and connection. Following the discussion, participants enjoyed lunch and simulated sports activities, fostering new friendships and a

The casual, fun setting encouraged continued bonding and emotional support. “This event is about real conversation—honest, brave discussions that help teens and young adults see that others truly understand what they’re going through,” said Irene Rodgers, chief development and engagement officer at the EPIC Family of Human Service Agencies. “The courage our panelists displayed is inspiring and the sense of camaraderie that filled the room is what our mission is all about.” Epilepsy affects more than 35,000 people on Long Island, and one in 10 will experience a seizure in their lifetime. The Epilepsy Foundation Long Island works to raise awareness, provide advocacy, and create opportunities for those living with epilepsy to feel seen, heard, and supported — including offering Seizure First Aid Certification and community education in schools and healthcare settings. The EPIC Family of Human Service Agencies consists of three organizations providing advocacy and healthcare resources across Long Island. EPIC Long Island supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through a Day Habilitation program in East Meadow and 18 group homes. The South Shore Guidance Center in Freeport offers outpatient behavioral health services for children, adolescents, and adults, including psychotherapy, substance use treatment, crisis stabilization, and medication-assisted treatment. Retro arcade expo draws thousands Celebrating 40 years of Nintendo By STACY DRIKS sdriks@liherald.com
From teens to longtime gamers, everyone found a reason to press start at the Long Island Retro Gaming Expo – a three-day celebration of video gaming. The Cradle of Aviation Museum was nearly unrecognizable during the expo, filled with vendors, cosplayers and hundreds of arcade games including Super PacMan, Space Invaders, Super Mario Bros., ping pong machines, Sonic and even video games on Playstation, Tekken 3 and Mortal Kombat. This year’s retro arcade expo had plenty to celebrate. It marked the event’s 10th anniversary, the 40th year since the Nintendo Entertainment System debuted in the United States and the same milestone for the release of “Super Mario Bros.,” a game that helped define an era.
As part of the celebration, organizers created a Console History Exhibit where guests could experience more than five decades of gaming systems. The set up featured everything from early PONG clones and Atari consoles to the Nintendo vs. Sega rivalry and the 16-bit showdown between Xbox and PlayStation. There were even imported games that never made it to the western hemisphere, and exclusive to Japan. There were various panels that guests joined featuring YouTube star Vinny Vinesauce, original voice actor of Meowth from Pokémon Matthew Sussman, Bob and Will Wulff from WULFF DEN and more. The retro arcade expo celebrated the timeless joy of gaming, proving that classic games continue to connect players across generations.

it impacts everyone involved. “The most rewarding part: seeing the smiles on the people’s faces,” Broughton said. “It’s a warm feeling when you can help somebody else, when you’re in position to help somebody up.”
He noted that the event is powered entirely by volunteers. “Nobody’s getting paid, nobody’s working, you know what I mean?” Broughton said. “We’re all volunteering our time, and we all come together
for the same cause, which is beautiful, you know, so everything there is a blessing.” On the day of the event, children must be accompanied by an adult to get haircuts, school supplies, sneakers and other
