Kicking off summer at Kiwanis ‘Kids Day’
East Meadow community unites for fun-filled event at high school
By JOSEPH D’ALESSANDRO jdalessandro@liherald.com
The Kiwanis Club of East Meadow’s inaugural Kids Day brought fun, laughter, and community spirit to East Meadow High School, raising money for scholarships for graduating high school seniors.
The family-focused fundraiser on June 28 offered two lively sessions filled with food trucks, face painting, bounce houses, and guest appearances from popular characters including those from “Star Wars” and “Bluey.” All proceeds from ticket sales went to the East Meadow Scholarship Program.
The Eden II Program, a school for students with special needs, the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, and Club Pilates served as the event’s three main sponsors.
Melody Schiller, president of the Kiwanis Club, said the fundraiser was created to support the club’s educational initiatives.
“We’ve been noticing that our scholarship fund has been dwindling, unfortunately,” she said. “It’s the first day of summer vacation, and this gives the kids a way of having fun while doing something to help the future of their community. While they’re bouncing and having fun,
they’re putting into their own scholarship funds for later years.”
Schiller added that the day was not only about fun but also about teaching kids the value of giving back.
“Our kids are our leaders of the future, and that’s what Kiwanis is all about,” she said. “It’s building leadership in kids who understand paying it forward and helping others.”
Taleen Krug, a committee member who helped organize the event, said she hopes Kids Day becomes a tradition in the community.
Some attractions were made possible through the support of local organizations. “East Meadow is really unique in the fact that we have a lot of community organizations that all come together and do things like this for the community, free of charge and or at minimal cost,” Krug said. “It’s all about the kids.”
Mitchell Allen, a past Kiwanis Club president, was key in planning the event and said he’s hopeful it will become an annual fixture.
“Our club gives out $6,000 worth of scholarships to high school seniors every year, and we’ve done this for as long as I can remember,” Allen said. “It’s probably longer than I’ve been a member of the
Elected officials and media figures throw support behind the Hempstead Chamber
Expanding busines-oriented group has membership reaching 180

At the June 25 regular membership meeting of the New Greater Hempstead Chamber of Commerce, before a crowd of Chamber members and prominent figures, President LaShawn Lukes revealed that Chamber membership has grown from 42 members to 180.
Taking part in the meeting were five elected officials: New York State Senator Siela Bynoe, Assemblyman Noah Burroughs, Nassau County Legislator Scott Davis, Hempstead Mayor Waylyn Hobbs, Jr., and Hempstead Village Trustee William Whitaker.
Former New York State Governor David Paterson, too, arrived to articulate his support for the Chamber and its leader.
Two 2025 candidates for office, Joe Scianablo (running for Town of Hempstead supervisor) and Viviana Russell (running for Legislative District 2), also offered their endorsement.
Prominent media personalities also weighed in.
Singer, songwriter, and educator Shelene Thomas, who has contributed vocals to albums of Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion, and Whitney Houston, delivered a lovely moment to the meeting when she performed a recent original piece of her own.
And Edward Lamson, a principal at real estate advisory firm BJH, walked the listening crowd through a summation of the Hempstead Downtown Revitalization Initiative, which he is heading. Noting that Lukes sits on the DRI Committee, he said that, under her leadership, “The Chamber members come out to the meetings. They are really there for the community and they have your back.”
The words spoken by the elected officials echoed their commitment to supporting the Chamber.
t’s important for government to be here because it’s all about us working together.
The meeting’s keynote speaker was no less a figure than Ralph McDaniels, the Brooklyn-born inventor and creator of Video Music Box, a vast archive of over 20,000 hours of hip-hop music and culture. Himself the creator of hundreds of videos, McDaniels encouraged the networking that is accelerating through the Chamber.

The emcee for the evening was James Hodge, a digital content creator who hosted a gospel radio show for over a decade at WGGB 1240 AM, under the nickname “Boy Wonder.”
“The spirit of the organization is new, based on how Dr. Lukes is leading it,” said Bynoe. “We are connected, and as the Chamber motto says, it’s about strengthening communities and business, and not just for oneway interaction.”
As examples of what she meant, Bynoe told how she was able to help a Chamber member surmount the administrative challenges of bringing a new business to a grand opening, and how Bynoe herself had called Lukes regarding a homeless child’s need for laundry services, which Lukes quickly found through her Chamber connections.
Paterson was equally emphatic.
“I think the purpose for being of being in the Chamber,” said Paterson, “is

Lukes responded by saying, “It’s not about me or the Chamber, it’s about us. When there is an issue for Chamber members or members of the community, we trust that we can have those real conversations, those truthful conversations, and find real solutions.”
At an earlier Chamber event, a June 14 family fun day and job fair on the grounds of the Global School of Health in West Hempstead, Nassau County Comptroller Elaine Phillips echoed the goal of unity between the Chamber and local government.
“We work together in Nassau County and here in Hempstead,” Phillips said. “This job fair was to bring community together because it’s all about us working together.”

At Caribbean Night, June 27 on Denton Green, the Angels Caribbean Band, led by former Hempstead resident Amar “Vinod” Bisram, brought smooth and versatile Caribbean flavors to music that ranged from reggae to American pop. About 100 people of all ages swayed to the music and filled up on Caribbean pies filled with beef, chicken, or veggies. Fish Fry Friday’s on Greenwich Street supplied the food.
Community-building events in Hempstead village Block parties, concerts, and activities planned all summer

Four community events in three days last week displayed the intensive, sustaining community-building that characterizes the Incorporated Village of Hempstead.
On June 26, the gym at Kennedy Memorial Park hosted an award ceremony for the Southern State Seminoles, the team of 9- and 10-year-old boys who won the 2024 national championship in the United Youth Football League.
Two events took place on June 27: the annual “Unity in Community” block party on Terrace Avenue sponsored by the Hempstead Village Police Department, and Caribbean Night on Denton Green, sponsored by the Hempstead Human Relations Council under the directorship of Angela Stanley.
Nassau County Legislators Scott Davis and Olena Nicks mixed with the residents all evening at the Terrace Avenue party.
Mayor Waylyn Hobbs Jr. and Assemblyman Noah Burroughs were on hand for both the June 27 events, as they had been for the June 26 ceremony.
“It’s a cold day in the Village of Hempstead,” teased Hobbs at the start of Caribbean Night, referring to the 68-degree evening and evoking laughter from the crowd. His customary opener is, “It’s a great day in the Village of Hempstead!”
On Saturday, Hobbs kicked off the summer season of the popular pool at Kennedy Memorial Park. The weather had cleared from a drippy morning and warmed enough for families to bring small beach balls and splash in the clear water. The Human Relations Council will sponsor a Gospel Night on Aug. 15, as part of the annual Friday summer concerts on Denton Green.
Yolanda Hutcherson, superintendent of Parks and Recreation for the village, will oversee the remainder of the season’s concerts.
Teens at the June 27 “Unity in Community” block party on Terrace Avenue united for an impromptu basketball game. Many of the players had participated in the Town Basketball 3 X 3 Tournament at Kennedy Park during Hempstead Day on June 14, which was led by Hempstead youth mentor Larry Gore with a partnering sponsorship from Papu Sidana of G.B.’s Sneaker Terminal. Gore and Sidana gave out trophies and sneakers to the players at the block party.
Mayor Waylyn Hobbs Jr., officially opened the pool season at Kennedy Memorial Park last Saturday. He thanked Gov. Kathy Hochul for the $9 million state grant that will enable the village to completely renovate the pool during the next year.
The New Greater Hempstead Chamber of Commerce participated in the June 27 “Unity in Community” Terrace Avenue block party by setting up information tables. Among the tables were that of Zainib Rizvi, left, whose Alula Bright Daycare opened this year on Baldwin Road in Hempstead. With Rizvi was Chamber Vice President Petal Scantlebury.
Assemblyman Noah Burroughs, left, joked with Mayor Waylyn Hobbs Jr., and Human Relations Director Angela Stanley at the opening of Caribbean Night on Denton Green, June 27. The three were standing

Phil Andrews celebrates 40 Years of service with fundraiser
Phil Andrews, president of the Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce and 100 Black Men of Eastern New York, marked four decades of community leadership with a special fundraising event on June 30 at Prestige Palace in Freeport.
The event, held in celebration of Andrews’ birthday and 40 years of service, raised $1,756 to benefit the African American Small Business Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting small Blackowned businesses across downstate New York.
Andrews, a longtime advocate for economic empowerment in the African American community and former vice president of the Haircut Hut Barber Shop Franchise, received a special citation from Town of Hempstead Deputy Supervisor Dorothy Goosby.
