INCORPORATING THE WEST HEMPSTEAD BEACON

Mentorship program wraps

Hempstead students learn from lawyers

In schools across Nassau County, many young people are experiencing difficult times without a clear path to work through their emotions. Depending on a students’ needs and circumstances, school counselors may offer a unique solution of time with a trustworthy adult where the student decides how to fill that time.

The Alan B. Hodish Mentorship Program celebrated the completion of its 29th year on May 21, hosted by the Nassau County Bar Association in Mineola. Nearly 200 students from nine schools sat with their mentors, shared a meal and expressed their appreciation for the time shared.

“I was a teacher at what is now called Barack Obama in Hempstead, taught there for many years, then I went to law school at St. John's,” Hodish explained. “That's when we started this with a principal of mine and a couple of people here from the bar association. We

felt it was a good way to give back to youngsters, give them a good role model … it's a special day for them and a special day for us.”

Throughout the mentorship program, students from across Nassau County met bi-weekly with members of the bar association, who visited their schools. When a mentor is assigned to a student, they are never told why exactly the counselor identified a need for mentorship; the premise of the program is to allow a student to have time away from expectations and assumptions that would exist otherwise.

During the sessions, students have time to shape as they see fit: they can talk about their personal interests, their aspirations or, if they wish, the things that have been bothering them.

The program is named after Alan Hodish, an East Meadow attorney specializing in personal injury, criminal law and education law. His previous career of 20 years was teaching in

District workers placed on leave

Election investigation begins after dispute

The Hempstead Union Free School District’s board of education elections last month has become a matter of contention among board members.

On May 19, voters approved the district’s $378.2 million budget and Trustee Victor Pratt won his bid for re-election. The board is now challenging the results of last week’s school budget vote and trustee election while placing two employees in the clerk’s office on paid administrative leave, deepening uncertainty over an election that voters had approved days earlier.

Throughout the week following the election, the board introduced a resolution to dispute the results and began an investigation into the election. At a board meeting held shortly before midnight on election night, the trustees that were present, excluding Pratt, approved that resolution without public discussion.

The board has not made a public statement on why the election’s results are being appealed nor for why the two employees were placed on leave.

At a meeting on May 27, Pratt spoke about his issue with the board’s actions.

“When these employees, the district clerk and the district clerk pro tem, were put on leave, it came with the stipulation of ‘pending an investigation,’” he said. “These appointments are definite. These are appointments through July 2, and for the rest of the school year… What are these employees being investigated for?”

I 'm calling on this Board of Education to immediately certify this election.

VIctOR PRAtt

The board did not accept the results of either the budget vote or trustee election. Instead, Board President Jeffrey Spencer introduced a resolution directing the district’s counsel, Guercio & Guercio LLP, to appeal to the commissioner of education. The board approved that resolution 5-0 without public discussion.

During an emergency meeting three days later, the board placed District Clerk April Keys and District Clerk Pro Tem Lottie Whitehead on administrative leave as a part of the investigation.

In a 3-2 vote, the board appointed Alexander Hernandez as interim district clerk and Patricia Wilson Wright as district clerk pro tem while the review continues. Pratt was “deeply troubled” by the turn of events.

“I'm calling on this Board of Education to immediately certify this election and respect the will of the voters,” he said. “I am also demanding that district employees who are sent home on administrative leave without explanation or justification be reinstated immediately. No employee should be punished without due process or transparency. Enough is enough.”

Spencer explained that the board would not take any questions regarding personnel matters at the meeting.

“The Board of Education is aware of allegations of certain allegations

Nassau bar installs new leader

Nassau County District Court Judge

Maxine Broderick is set to be installed

Tuesday as the 124th president of the Nassau County Bar Association, one of Long Island’s largest legal organizations, in a ceremony that will also seat a new slate of officers and directors.

Broderick will be sworn in by Judge Linda Mejias-Glover of the New York State Court of Claims alongside President-Elect Samuel Ferrara, Vice President Deanne Caputo, Treasurer Ira Slavit and Secretary Michael Antongiovanni.

A Hempstead native, Broderick is the youngest of four children in a Caribbe-

an-American family that emphasized education and public service. She graduated from Fordham University in 1995, later attended Brooklyn Law School at night while working full time, earned her law degree in 2003 and was admitted to practice in New York the following year. After working in several legal settings, she opened her own practice in 2008.

Her judicial career began in 2017, when she was appointed Hempstead Village Court justice. Later that year, she won election to Nassau County District Court, representing the Town of Hempstead. Broderick now serves as an acting county court judge sitting in district court and has handled cases involving assault, criminal contempt, drunken driving and unlawful imprisonment.

She served for three years as the domestic violence misdemeanor judge and in 2023 became the presiding judge of Nassau County’s Human Trafficking Intervention Court.

She is also an adjunct professor at Hofstra Law School, where she teaches a course on leadership in the legal profession.

As incoming president, Broderick said she wants to strengthen the bar association’s sense of community, expand professional development opportunities.

Cradle-Con returns to L.I. bringing fans together

Comic book fans, collectors, cosplayers and gamers from across Long Island gathered at the Cradle of Aviation Museum for Cradle-Con, the museum's annual pop culture convention.

The event featured comic creators, artists, vendors, cosplay groups, retro gaming and family-friendly activities.

Featured guests included voice actors Bill Ratner, who voiced Flint in "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero"; Mary McDonald-Lewis, the voice of Lady Jaye; writer Larry Hama; and Lisa Raggio, who voiced Zarana.

Also appearing was James O'Barr, creator of "The Crow," the comic book series he created following the death of his fiancée in a crash caused by a

drunk driver.

Author John Peel, who lives on Long Island, also attended. Peel is known for writing science fiction novels and licensed books based on franchises including "Doctor Who," "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."

One of the convention's most popular attractions was the Cereal Club, a nostalgia-themed area featuring classic cartoons, retro video games and an all-you-can-eat cereal bar. The attraction was designed to recreate the Saturday morning experience many attendees remembered from childhood.

Mentors let kids take the lead

Hempstead’s elementary schools. He combined these facets of his life 29 years ago to create the student mentorship program.

Participating schools included W.T. Clarke and Woodland middle schools in East Meadow; Jericho Middle School; and schools in the Westbury, Uniondale and Hempstead districts.

East Meadow attorney Ted Rosenthal has been involved with the program for over 20 years. Throughout this time, he remembers many of the students whose lives he helped shape.

W“One year, the mentee I had lost his father that summer before these are middle school kids, so they're sixth to eighth grade, and at the end of the year I got a telephone call from his mother saying that I had a real impact,” he said. “it's very, very rewarding... it is one of the best things that I do during a year.”

“I often feel like the students give more to me than I give to them,” he said. “It's such a wonderful experience to be with them, share with them some of the ideas we have about shaping their future, but more importantly, listening to them… every class is different, so you have to do a lot more listening than talking, so when you meet them where they are, you can provide the guidance that you believe they may need in order to ensure that their brightest future.”

Past association President Dorian Glover is one of the mentors in the program, directly observing how their work affects young people for the better.

James Joseph, outgoing president of the Nassau County Bar Association, is an advocate for civic duty within the association. In addition to the mentorship program, the association supports other initiatives.

“We are one of the largest suburban bar associations in the country; we have about 4,000 members and we serve not only local attorneys, but the community,” he said. “We have various charities… there's always events going on, and of course today's event is one of quite a few that we're really proud of, where we have a real impact on the community.”

Board declines to comment

concerning its annual election to ensure the district alert election was conducted properly, and in the interest

of full transparency, the district is asking the Commissioner of Education to review the election consistent with other legal matters,” he said. “The district will not comment further.”

An East Meadow student was among the top winners in PSEG Long Island’s seventh annual I Am EM-Powered Energy Conservation video public service announcement contest.

Isabella Cardenas, a student at Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow School District, was recognized as one of the creators of the top 10 winning PSA videos. Her teacher, Jamie Bouretis, was also honored as part of the program.

The program is provided to teachers free of charge by PSEG Long Island and includes lessons as well as instructions on how to create a video public service announcement.

This year, 4,381 students and 105 educators from 41 schools in 32 school districts across Long Island and the Rockaways took part in the coursework.
