Mother speaks out on son’s deportation

Amanda Garcia’s 47-year-old son, a Home Depot driver with Temporary Protected Status, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers on the street in New Jersey last July. Garcia is unsure, she said, whether her son was carrying his Employment Authorization document at the time.
Garcia said her son was sent to the Delaney Hall Detention Center in Newark, N.J., and transferred to a facility in Pennsylvania before being flown to El Salvador, which he left in 1999 when he was 20.
Now separated from his three children — 22, 19 and 16 — and jobless in a country that he has not lived in for 27 years, “he’s very depressed,” Garcia said.
More than 400 protesters turned out for the March for Humanity in the Village of Hempstead on May 1, International Workers’ Day. Garcia was among them. She led the 3 p.m. demonstration through the streets of Hempstead as the sun shone
down, schools let out and commuter traffic crowded the roads. The march began with roughly 250 protesters but swelled by an additional 150 or more by its midpoint as residents and students joined in.
Garcia, 65, who was born and raised in San Salvador, El Salvador’s capital, carried a circular cardboard sign that read, “ICE Out of Long Island.” The grandmother and soon-to-be greatgrandmother walked with sadness etched across her face, followed by a mix of protesters, including immigrant rights activists, union workers and antiwar demonstrators.
Marchers chanted slogans such as “We want justice — You say how — ICE out of Hempstead now!” and “This is for the families who are locked inside — Together we will abolish ICE!”

Island marathon draws major crowd
From 5K to 26.2, crowds pack into Eisenhower Park to set new records

Runners from near and far hit the pavement in Eisenhower Park this weekend for the Jovia Financial Credit Union Long Island Marathon, drawing thousands of athletes, families, foodies and more for a celebration of endurance, community and local connection.
Festivities kicked off with a 5K Family Fun Run on May 1, followed by a 10K and 1K Kids Fun Run on May 2 and the half-marathon and marathon on May 3. Each race began, and ended, in East Meadow’s Eisenhower Park.
The marathon is the premier sporting event in Nassau County and an economic generator for the area. It also is a great source of community entertainment outside of the races. A food truck festival ran all weekend, along with a full lineup of music entertainment at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre in the park. The marathon, which celebrated its 53rd year, has been sponsored by Jovia Financial Credit Union for the last decade.

“I think our partnership with this event is really relevant,” he said at a previous race preview event. “We’ve been in the community for 85 years now, serving our members, and they trust us for a variety of financial needs. But no matter what, our staff is always looking to greet them and get them to their next mile.”

Over 4,000 runners participated in the weekend’s festivities.
“The Marathon Weekend brings together people from all over the globe,” race director Corey Roberts said in a news release. “I cannot thank Jovia enough for continuing their support as the title sponsor of the marathon.”

The top three finishers in the women’s marathon included Grace Garvey, 25 of New York City, Rebecca Arbitman, 17 of Roslyn; and Samantha Augeri, 43 of Rockville Centre.
Garvey said she didn’t realize she was as far ahead of other runners as she was. Pacers on a bicycle were guiding her towards the finish line, but still, she said, “I thought there was a really big gap between me and person that was in first.”
“I am extremely, extremely thankful,” she said, reflecting on the performance. “I was injured this past year, so I was in a lot of recovery, so to be able to come out and perform the way that I did — it was amazing.”

In observance of Law Day, Nassau County Legislator Scott Davis welcomed students from the Roosevelt and Hempstead school districts to Nassau County First District Court and the Theodore Roosevelt Executive & Legislative Building on May 1.
Students observed court proceedings, toured the legislative chambers and the Office of Legislative Budget & Review, and spoke with Davis and minority counsel during a lunch-and-learn session after the tour.
Law Day celebrates the rule of law and provides an opportunity to understand how law and the legal process protect our liberty, strive to achieve justice, and contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share, according to the
American Bar Association.
“Preserving the rule of law requires vigilance and a commitment to mentoring the next generation of young leaders who will defend these institutions for decades to come,” Davis said in a news release. “I can think of no better way to honor National Law Day than an up-close view of the functioning of the courts and their local government, and I thank our local school districts for working with my office and making this opportunity possible.”
According to the United States Courts, Law Day has been a prominent part of American legal culture since President Dwight Eisenhower established it in 1958 to celebrate the rule of law in a free society.

Four arrested in crime ring
Nassau County police said four people were arrested April 22 in Hempstead following an investigation into alleged illegal massage services and prostitution at Lilac Spa, 391 W. Peninsula Blvd., and No. 8 Beauty Spa, 725 Fulton Ave.
Police identified those arrested as Jiang Yuhang, 44, Qin Zhao, 42, Hongyan Fang, 43, and Yi Lin, 35. Zhao and Lin were charged with prostitution and unauthorized practice of a profession, police said. Jiang was charged with
attempted fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, and Fang was charged with unauthorized practice of a profession.
All four were issued appearance tickets and released, police said. They were later taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. The investigation was conducted by the department’s Narcotics Vice Squad.

Civil rights attorney Fred Brewington, whose office is located a short distance from the Hempstead NICE bus terminal where the march began, said, “This is democracy in action. This is showing the people who are most affected can make a difference.”
ICE debate in Hempstead Bradley Hinton, 75, of Hempstead, is a retired repairman who volunteers to drive frail neighbors to their medical and other appointments. He attended the march, he said, because he wants ICE out of Hempstead. “A lot of the businesses are losing out,” he said, because Latino residents worry they might be targeted by ICE for detention and deportation, regardless of their immigration status.
“They’re scared,” Hinton said. “The kids are scared. They’re afraid to come out. You can’t blame them.”
Hinton said he was disturbed when he learned that Village of Hempstead had been cooperating with ICE, allowing the federal agency to use its armory as a staging area for its operations.
Hempstead Mayor Waylyn Hobbs Jr. stopped briefly by the protest as marchers were preparing to step off, accompanied by Assistant Chief of Police Derek Warner. When asked whether the village was still permitting ICE to use the armory, Hobbs said in an interview, “That’s not true.”
Warner noted that village officials have not cooperated with ICE for more than two months, saying that any residual belief that the village was still working with the agency is a “false impression.”
The mayor said ICE continues to oper-
ate in the village, as permitted by law, but reiterated that Hempstead officials are no longer working with the agency as they were.
Hempstead’s cooperation with ICE was the subject of intense discussion and debate at a Village of Hempstead meeting in early February, covered by The Advocate. At the time, ICE had come under increased scrutiny following the deaths of Nicole Good, a mother of three, and Alex Peretti. Both U.S. citizens, they were shot and killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis.
At the February meeting, Hobbs said that he and the village board of trustees had already agreed to end Hempstead’s cooperation with ICE. “I have instructed our police department chief that we will
not have any of our officers working with ICE,” Hobbs said, adding that he was working with Gov. Kathy Hochul on legislation to prevent local police officers from working with ICE.
Push for New York For All Daniel McElroy, 30, of Garden City, said he attended the protest to advocate for New York For All legislation, which would prohibit state and local government officials from cooperating with ICE in immigration enforcement. “The fact that police [are] working with ICE is extremely dangerous,” he said.
McElroy spoke of the Nassau County Police Department’s cooperation with ICE. Last year, County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder signed a 287(g) agreement
allowing ICE to use the Nassau County Correctional Facility in East Meadow as an immigration holding center. It also authorizes 10 detectives to work with ICE agents in immigration enforcement.
McElroy held a gray Styrofoam tombstone with the name Santos Reyes written across it in white lettering. A 42-year-old Honduran national, Reyes died in ICE custody at the Nassau County jail last Sept. 18. The father of two had been arrested while at work on a construction job. The exact cause of his death remains unclear, though authorities said Reyes suffered from underlying health issues.
Blakeman has maintained that Nassau County detectives are cooperating with ICE in the removal of known criminals only, not those who abide by the law, a claim that protesters at the march disputed.
This April, State Sen. Andrew Gounardes and Assemblywoman Karine Reyes, both Democrats, led a coalition of state legislators to call for passage of the New York For All measure, but its fate remains uncertain.
“Half-measures are simply not enough when lives are at stake,” Gounardes, from Brooklyn, said. “We’re fighting for comprehensive legislation that prevents collusion with ICE, pushes back against President Trump’s authoritarianism and ensures true public safety for all New Yorkers.”
Miguel Alas, a volunteer with the Central American Refugee Center in Hempstead, said the march aimed to shine a light on the critical issues faced by immigrants. It was intended, he said, “to make the community aware of the meaning of justice, of hope.”
Island Harvest Stamp Out Hunger drive returns May 9
Residents across Long Island are being asked to take part in the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive on May 9 by leaving donations at their homes for pickup.
Island Harvest Food Bank and the National Association of Letter Carriers are partnering for the nationwide oneday effort.
Community members can leave nonperishable food items and personal care products in a bag by their mailboxes, where letter carriers will collect them during regular delivery. All donations collected on Long Island will support Island Harvest’s network of communitybased food pantries and feeding programs.
The need remains significant, according to Randi Shubin Dresner, president and chief executive of Island Harvest Food Bank, which distributed a record 21 million pounds of food across Nassau and Suffolk counties last year.
“Hunger and food insecurity impact about a quarter of a million Long Islanders, including children, families, older adults, and veterans — and virtually every ZIP code is affected,” Shubin Dresner said in a news release. “We
have always depended on the generosity of Long Islanders to support their neighbors. The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is an easy yet powerful way for our community to come together. When Long Islanders act as one island for one day, the impact is extraordinary.”
Items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelf-stable milk. Prepared food and items in glass containers are not accepted. Personal care products such as toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant and disposable diapers are also accepted.
Tom Siesto, executive vice president of NALC Branch 6000, said that letter carriers see the effects of food insecurity every day.
“Our members see firsthand the impact of food insecurity on Long Island during their daily routes,” Siesto said in the release. “We are proud to partner with Island Harvest once again and to help bring neighbors together for the 34th annual Stamp Out Hunger food collection. This one day when letter carriers and residents unite island-wide makes a real difference.”
Stamp Out Hunger is held annually on the second Saturday in May, and has
collected more than 2 billion pounds of food nationwide since it began in 1993.
Last year, Long Island residents donated more than 360,000 pounds of food, enough for more than 600,000 meals. Island Harvest aims to collect more than 500,000 pounds this year.
This year’s collection campaign on Long Island is supported by presenting sponsor National Grid, lead sponsor JPMorgan Chase, and IPRO Healthcare, along with nearly 40 additional corporations.
Island Harvest Food Bank is a leading human-services organization whose mission is to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island. A run for the homeless, and a bid care for the pets left behind

More than 200 people ran towards change on April 25 at Belmont Lake State Park, demonstrating a powerful community effort.
Participants gathered for the Second Annual Milo’s 5K for the Homeless, which aimed to raise awareness for the thousands of individuals experiencing homelessness who often have to give up their pets. With most shelters unable to accommodate animals, these people are often forced to choose between their own safety and staying with their loyal companions--an extremely difficult decision no one should have to make. This issue has transformed compassion into action and created an event that shed a light on those navigating such conditions.
Kaitlyn Beers, the community engagement specialist for the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, said that the event was “a team effort,” driven by a shared commitment to addressing a critical gap in support.
“Most shelters in general don’t allow pets in them, so people often have to decide between entering the shelter or taking their pets with them, and so people will decide to live in their cars, or they’ll live on the street,” she said.
For Beers and her team, the goal is to shift public perception and highlight the urgency of the issue, emphasizing
that homelessness is immediate and local. “It’s not this kind of mythic thing. It’s right in our backyards,” she said.
Dylan Schwarz is both speedy and philanthropic. As the winner of the 5K and a member of the coalition, Schwarz echoed a similar sentiment to Beers.
“I think it’s important to get the word out there as much as possible about the struggles that so many in our community are facing. A lot of them we don’t even know about, because it’s hidden,” he said.
Schwarz said he wore face paint and “tried to dress a little goofy to try to make people smile a little extra.”
The mission is clear to Schwarz. “Anything we can do to raise funds and raise awareness makes a difference,” he said.
Beers noted that this race is only the beginning of a growing tradition.
“This is our second race, so we did one last year, but we’re going to kind of continue it every year to rebuild the community,” she said.
The most fulfilling aspect of her playing a vital role in this event, Beers said, “I think a lot of people are very disconnected from some people, and seeing everybody rallying together for the same cause, coming here, having fun and just living life and kind of supporting each other, supporting our neighbors, and not letting this kind of crazy world that we’re living in ruin our fun and ruin our joy.”

Miles of smiles during Eisenhower Park marathon weekend
Garvey crossed the finish line at 3 hours, 6 minutes, and 55 seconds.
The 26.2-mile race began and ended near Eisenhower Park’s Field 5. Runners headed west, leaving the park on Merrick Avenue, and then turned toward Garden City on Charles Lindbergh Boulevard, looping back then heading northeast through Salisbury, around Eisenhower Park, before re-entering at Carmen Avenue.
The half marathon followed the same path with only one loop of the entire course instead of two.
Jenna Vallone, 21 of Massapequa, completed her first half-marathon. She turned to running as a way to stay in shape while away at college and improve her mental health. Her training began a year ago, and she expressed gratitude for her family and friends that supported the journey. She completed the race in just under 2 hours.
“You can do hard things,” she said. “You only have one life, and I want to spend it working hard and beinggrateful.”
