Sacred Heart student turns to neurology

A Sacred Heart Academy junior, who livws in Valley Stream, earned top recognition earlier this month for a research project examining the relationship between social media and academic-related outcomes.
Sameera Rampertab, 17, was awarded First Place Overall and a $1,000 prize at the 2026 Long Island Youth Summit, held April 17 at St. Joseph’s University. The event drew more than 300 participants representing 35 schools, with students from New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts submitting research papers, videos and artwork.
“Ms. Rampertab’s study was a remarkable work of science — thorough, sophisticated and creative,” summit co-director Nathalia Rogers said.
Rampertab’s winning paper, titled “Neurologic reward systems: Analyzing social media’s effects on academic performance,” focused on the intersection of biology and psychology. She was guided
by her interest in neuroscience toward her work, particularly as she sought a project that could be conducted outside a traditional laboratory setting.
“I decided to go in the behavior direction,” Rampertab said. “I saw that, especially with the cellphone ban, social media was a really good topic to do.”
Her study combined survey-based research with biometric data collection. She developed a social media attachment scale and used established tools to measure anxiety levels among participants. The research involved 140 adolescent female students across Long Island, ages 13 to 18, and incorporated eye-tracking data and brain wave monitoring using commercially available technology.
Among her findings, Rampertab identified a relationship between higher levels of social media attachment and increased anxiety. She also examined sleep patterns and found that total daily time spent on social media was not a predictor of sleep quality, noting that pre-bedtime use was a more relevant factor. The League of Women Voters of East Nassau invited legal experts for an in-depth look at evolving immigration policies at a recent forum at the Levittown Public Library.
The league represents multiple communities, including East Meadow, Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh, Seaford and Hempstead.
Residents spoke with experts, hoping to separate fact from misinformation amid a rapidly changing national landscape. The event featured speakers from the Central American Refugee Center, known as CARECEN, who outlined major federal policy shifts and their real-world impacts on immigrant communities.

One of the most significant updates involved a temporary pause on asylum applications earlier this year. While the pause has been partially lifted, Churchill said that applicants from dozens of countries designated as “high risk” remain in limbo.

The Town of Hempstead partnered with Reworld, a sustainable waste solutions company, to recognize students from schools across the town for their environmental-themed artwork in its annual Earth Day Poster Contest.
Chavez of Caroline G. Atkinson Intermediate School won first place; Arlyn Euceda of Polk Street School was second; and Andy Tined of James A. Dever School was third. Honorable mentions went to Sehajpreet Kaur of Howell Road School and Aidan Rizzotti of Oceanside School No. 5.
“This contest is a powerful reminder that even the youngest members of our community have a voice in shaping a more sustainable future,” said Town of Hempstead Supervisor John Ferretti. “Their ideas, expressed through art, highlight the importance of protecting our environment and serve as an inspiration to us all.”
Now in its fourth decade, the contest invited students in grades 1-8 to create posters promoting recycling, energy conservation and protection of natural resources.

Student submissions ranged from calls to reduce waste to messages about protecting wildlife. Winners received Barnes & Noble Nook e-readers and gift cards.

Poster Contest to inspire the
Project explores social media’s impact on teenagers’ brains
showed that negative social media comments were viewed longer than positive ones, and that physiological responses, such as beta brain wave activity and heart rate, rose during social media use.
“I think that the biology surprised me the most, I think the heart rate especially, and the beta waves surprised me the most, because this has mostly been done on adults in the past,” Rampertab said. “It was surprising that it could be replicated in female adolescents.”
She also adjusted her research design during the process, expanding from survey-based methods to include biometric measurements after determining that biological data could strengthen the study.
The project was developed with guidance from faculty at Sacred Heart Academy, including science research director Stephen Sullivan and department chair Beth Feinman. Sullivan described his role as advisory, emphasizing instruction in research methods, statistical analysis and critical reading of scientific literature while allowing students to develop their own hypotheses.
He said Rampertab has been engaged in independent research since the 10th grade and has consistently demonstrated growth. According to Sullivan, her work reflects the level of an undergraduate thesis and stands out for its integration of multiple disciplines, including neurobiology and psychology.
“She has become a wonderful presenter, but she was not as a ninth grader,” Sullivan said. “She is incredibly, incredibly talented, and she has grown. Sometimes, the weaker kids grow; she’s a strong kid who has grown.” Sullivan also noted that the summit evaluates submissions in advance, with awards based on research quality rather than on presentations during the event. He said Rampertab’s project was competitive at the highest level and that it is
uncommon for a junior to earn the top overall award.
At the summit, participants engaged in discussions with peers, professors and professionals in related fields, though formal presentations were not part of the competition process. Rampertab said she received positive feedback from faculty and other attendees, particularly regarding her use of biometric data.
Despite the scale of the event and the number of participants, Rampertab said
her focus was on representing her school. She described the award as meaningful not only for her, but also for Sacred Heart Academy and the eight other girls who competed, noting that she wanted to contribute to the school’s record at the competition.
Sullivan highlighted her collaborative approach within the school’s research program, describing a structure in which students across grade levels support one another. He said Rampertab mentors younger students while continuing to build on her own work, reflecting a broader culture of peer collaboration.
“She’s a remarkable kid who I don’t think understands that,” Sullivan said. “She’s accomplished a lot, but I don’t know if she quite realizes that she’s special, which makes her more special.”
Looking ahead, Rampertab said she plans to pursue neuroscience, with a particular interest in researching neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. She added that the experience has strengthened her confidence in her academic and career goals.
For other students interested in research, she emphasized the importance of sustained interest, consistent effort and openness to new ideas.
Rampertab said representing Valley Stream at the competition was an honor and expressed hope that members of the community would take pride in the achievement.

Nassau lawmakers push update to e-bike policies

What was supposed to be a simple ride around the block turned into a costly ordeal for West Hempstead resident Carmine Macchia, who said Nassau police confiscated his class-2 electric bicycle despite his understanding that it was legal under New York state law.
“On Thursday, I was pulled over riding my bicycle by a marked police cruiser,” Macchia said Monday during a news conference. “The police told me that a law was passed last year that outlawed e-bikes throughout Nassau County. Turns out there was no such law.”
Macchia, said he had owned the foldable pedal-assist bicycle for several years and was using it for what he described as a short recreational ride near his home when officers stopped him.
Macchia’s bike was taken to a private impound lot, he said, and he was charged $179 plus a $20 daily storage fee to retrieve it. And now won’t ride his bike out of fear that something like this would happen again because he believes he will have a criminal record.
His case became the centerpiece of a push by Nassau County Democratic legislators, where Legislator Olena Nicks introduced legislation Monday.
Nicks is stressing for an update an outdated county ordinance and clarify which electric bicycles and scooters are permitted on county roads.
“What we are changing are the outdated county restrictions that punish our residents for using legal, affordable transportation options,” Nicks said. “These residents are treated like they are doing something wrong, simply because Nassau County does not want to modernize its code and it make no sense at all.”
The proposal would amend Nassau’s current motorized vehicle code, which Democrat lawmakers said was last updated in 2006, before e-bikes and e-scooters became common.
New York State Department of Motor Vehicles guidance classifies Class 2 electric bicycles — throttle-assisted bikes with a maximum speed of 20 miles per hour — as legal bicycles with electric assist that may be operated on roads with posted speed limits of 30 miles per hour or less.
“The law allows people to operate electric scooters (e-scooters) and bicycles with an electric assist (e-bikes) on some streets and highways in New York State,” according to the motor vehicles.
Nassau police said on social media on March 5 that motorized scooters and Class 2 and 3 e-bikes cannot ride on any Nassau County roadway or property, meaning those devices are prohibited under county law despite New York state legalizing and establishing operating rules for three classes of electric bicycles in 2020, including throttle-assisted and pedal-assist models.
West Hempstead resident Carmine Macchia spoke during a news conference on Monday after Nassau police confiscated his class 2 electric bicycle on April 23, prompting Democratic lawmakers to introduce legislation aimed at clarifying the county’s e-bike rules.
“Enforcement of existing laws are the reason why we are the safest county in America,” Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said in a statement on Monday.
Democrat lawmakers said the measure would bring Nassau County’s e-bike rules in line with New York state law while keeping current prohibitions on reckless riding, sidewalk riding and other unsafe conduct in place.
“I legally bought it. I legally rode it. And that did not keep me safe,” Macchia said.

EAC Network expands child protection to Nassau
EAC Network officially became Long Island’s lead agency for child protection services last week, opening the Nassau County Child Advocacy Center in Bethpage and expanding its coordinated response to child abuse, sexual exploitation and trafficking across both Nassau and Suffolk counties.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new center, located at 15 Grumman Road West, Suite 1000, included Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly, state lawmakers and officials from the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.
EAC Network already operates the Suffolk County Child Advocacy Center, and with the addition of the Nassau location, it is now the only agency overseeing child advocacy centers in both counties.
“Child abuse and sex trafficking don’t stop at county lines, and neither do we,” EAC Network President and Chief Executive Officer Neela Mukherjee Lockel said in a statement. “With our Child Advocacy Centers now in both Nassau and Suffolk, EAC Network is the first organization in Long Island’s history to offer a unified, island-wide response to child exploitation.”
According to Lockel, the Nassau center has already received nearly 200 referrals for suspected physical or sexual abuse of minors in its first three months of operation.
The Nassau County Child Advocacy Center will operate two main programs under EAC Network’s leadership. Its Child Advocacy Center program provides forensic interviews, medical evaluations and mental health support for children who have experienced abuse in a child-friendly setting. Its Safe Harbour program focuses on minors under age 18 who are victims of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation, offering advocacy and comprehensive services.
“Nassau County is committed to ensuring every child is safe, protected, and supported,” Blakeman said in a written statement. “By taking the helm of the Child Advocacy Center, they are strengthening our county’s ability to respond swiftly and compassionately to our most vulnerable residents.”
Donnelly called the center “a cornerstone of how we protect children and hold offenders accountable,” noting that the partnership between law enforcement, prosecutors and victim advocates helps ensure trauma-informed care while cases are investigated.
EAC Network works alongside Nassau and Suffolk police departments, both district attorneys’ offices, the FBI, child protective services agencies, hospitals and mental health providers.
The opening comes amid growing statewide concern over child abuse and trafficking. New York’s child protective system received nearly 149,000 reports of suspected child abuse and maltreat-
ment in 2022, according to state data, with more than 31,700 reports formally indicated. The New York State Interagency Task Force on Human Trafficking also confirmed 114 human trafficking referrals on Long Island and in the lower Hudson Valley in its most recent reporting period, with minors accounting for 38 confirmed victims statewide.
A former child advocacy center client, identified only as Julianna, spoke at
the ceremony about the center’s role in her recovery from abuse, calling it “a place where I could begin to rebuild myself.”
EAC Network officials said the new Nassau center is intended to ensure that children facing abuse or exploitation receive coordinated care, advocacy and support closer to home.

In addition to policy updates, Sacasa highlighted the human impact of immigration enforcement, including efforts to help families prepare for potential separation through legal guardianship planning. The discussion concluded with a look ahead to a pending U.S. Supreme Court decision on birthright citizenship, expected later this year.
Despite the complexity of the issues, speakers emphasized the importance of staying informed and engaged. “Each of us has a role to play,” Sacasa said, “even if it’s just trying to stay informed.”
The League of Women Voters ended the meeting with treasurer Carol Bergman presenting a donation to the CARECEN. “We are all immigrants — we all came from somewhere — so thank you for your work,” Bergman said.

Mother arrested in infant attack
A Hempstead woman was indicted on attempted murder and assault charges after she allegedly slammed her 21-monthold daughter into a concrete wall at their apartment building in March, causing serious injuries, according to Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly.
Chantel Barnes, 28, was arraigned April 23 before Judge Helene Gugerty on charges of attempted second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child, prosecutors said.
Barnes pleaded not guilty. Bail was set at $110,000 cash, $200,000 bond or a $1 million partially secured bond. The court issued a stay-away order of protection. Barnes is due back in court May 19. If convicted, she could face up to 25 years in prison.
“A 21-month-old toddler girl was left with serious injuries after a violent and chaotic attack, allegedly committed by her own mother,”
Donnelly said. “Screaming that she had killed her child, this defendant ran into the hallway allegedly aggressively swinging the toddler into a wall, slamming her head and face repeatedly. After medical intervention, the little girl has incredibly made a full recovery. Violent crimes against vulnerable children are unthinkable, especially at the hands of
parents who should be the most trusted adults in a child’s life. We will prosecute these cases and protect our children.”
According to the charges, Barnes entered the hallway of her apartment building at about 4 p.m. March 9 carrying her daughter and allegedly swung the child into a concrete wall.
Prosecutors said the child’s father returned home a short time later and found the toddler injured on the hallway floor and called the police for help, leading to Barnes fleeing on foot.
The child was taken to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, where she was treated for a skull fracture, a fractured clavicle and internal injuries, prosecutors said. She was released to her father’s care on March 20.
Barnes was arrested April 23 by detectives assigned to the Nassau County Police Department’s Special Victims Squad.
Assistant District Attorney James McLaughlin of the Special Victims Bureau is prosecuting the case under the supervision of Deputy Bureau Chief Laura Dorfman, Bureau Chief Emma Slane and Executive Assistant District Attorney Kevin Higgins, prosecutors said. Barnes is represented by attorney Ryan Holt.
