Building Homes for Heroes 5K returns

Building Homes for Heroes 5K Walk/ Run returned to Eisenhower Park on April 4, drawing runners, families and community members together in support of injured veterans and first responders. The event combined fundraising with outreach, as organizers aimed to expand awareness of the nonprofit’s mission while building from momentum from last year’s race.

Based in Island Park, Building Homes for Heroes was formed in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks, when founder Andy Pujol volunteered in search and rescue efforts at Ground Zero. What began as an effort to gift a single home to a returning veteran has since grown into a national organization that has provided hundreds of mortgage-free homes. The nonprofit is now on track to complete its 500th home by the end of 2026.

Beyond housing, the organization offers long-term support to veterans and

their families, including financial advisory services, emergency funding and programming focused on mental health, academic advancement and physical wellness. When homes are gifted, the celebrations often bring together local police and fire departments and community members for large, procession-style welcome events.

The race itself is part of a renewed push to strengthen the nonprofit’s presence on Long Island. Last year marked the first time in roughly a decade that Building Homes for Heroes hosted a run locally, and organizers said the response exceeded expectations. About 195 runners participated in the 2025 event despite steady rain and cold conditions, demonstrating a strong level of community support.

David Weingrad, the organization’s director of communications, said much of that success was due to Daniel Hernandez, a Marine veteran and staff member who helped bring the race back.

Community pushes board to develop Nassau Hub and for zoning reversal

Town of Hempstead residents urged town board members to repeal zoning in the Nassau Hub during a meeting last month. The zoning had previously been approved to build a casino.

The hub is the area that centers immediately near the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale. The town board approved zoning changes last June to allow a hotel and casino at the coliseum site. Las Vegas Sands, a resort hotel developer, proposed the project in 2022.

After years of leasing issues and delays since 2022, Sands withdrew its bid for a New York state gaming license in April 2025 and later exited its lease agreement. The company had said it would seek a third-party developer, but no replacement was secured before the state’s licensing deadline. The zoning changes remained in place.

Monica Kiely, a member of the “Say No to the Casino” Civic Association, called on the town board to repeal the zoning, citing uncertainty around the site’s future. The Las Vegas Sands Corporation “was supposed to compete for one of the three New York State casino licenses. They withdrew from the competition. They were looking for somebody to take their place at the last minute.

“Nobody did,” Kiely said. “So we don’t need zoning for gambling anymore. There’s no project on the horizon.”

The zoning proposal drew backlash from residents and nearby institutions when it was approved. Hofstra University issued an open letter opposing Sands’ proposal in 2023.

“The Nassau Hub is an entirely inappropriate location for a casino. It is surrounded by educational institutions from preschool through graduate school, and a diversity of suburban communities that should not be exposed to the increased traffic congestion, crime, economic harm to local businesses, and other negative impacts that a casino development would likely bring,” Hofstra’s letter stated.

Hofstra University and other educational institutions had opposed the zoning changes. The university sued Nassau County over the casino development, initially blocking the lease agreement before it was later approved with modifications.

With Sands no longer involved, the future of the site remains unclear.

Lynn Krug, of Garden City, expressed concern about the vacancy of the land and the potential negative impacts of gambling activity.

“We don’t want gambling because of the crime it brings. It’s going to bring down our communities, and we don’t want it here,” Krug said. “It’s a dirty business. Look at Atlantic City — kaput. We don’t need the Sands.’”

The site’s future is also affected by state legislation. Local leaders, including Hempstead Town Supervisor John Ferretti, have opposed the proposed REVIVE Act, which would allow for commercial properties and parking lots such as that found at the coliseum to be converted into residential and mixeduse developments, bypassing existing zoning laws.

Gillen-backed immigration bill advances in House

House Democrats secured enough bipartisan support last week to pass legislation to extend temporary protected status for roughly 350,000 Haitians living in the United States. Since Rep. Laura Gillen assumed office last year, she has backed a bill that would allow Haitian TPS holders legal status for three more years.

During a roundtable discussion in Elmont just days before the pivotal vote on April 16, Gillen acknowledged the limitations of temporary measures and pointed to broader legislative efforts, including bipartisan immigration proposals aimed at creating pathways to legal status.

The latest legislation would mark a transformational moment for TPS holders seeking clarity about their future. Haiti was first designated for TPS following a devastating 2010 earthquake, and ongoing instability has kept the designation in place.

Last week’s House effort, led by Rep. Ayanna Pressley and backed by Gillen and original co-sponsor Rep. Mike Lawler, secured the required 218 signatures earlier this month, triggering the House vote, in which it passed, 224-204.

“This should be something that galvanized folks to understand it doesn’t matter about the people who’s trying to divide you, it’s what’s important to you, right?” Pierre-Johnson said. “So if your

neighbors that are going to work, paying taxes, you know, building a family, building a life, and the only thing stopping them from doing all of that is a piece of legislation.”

In January, Gillen signed a bipartisan letter urging the Trump administration to extend TPS for Haitian nationals

ahead of the Feb. 3 expiration. She also met with White House officials to advocate for continued protections, efforts that coincided with a federal court ruling issued one day before the deadline that preserved TPS.

Gillen reiterated the need for broader reform, noting the limits of temporary protections. She is also among the Democratic co-sponsors of the bipartisan Dignity Act, which aims to create a pathway to legal status for long-term U.S. residents.

Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages, whose 22nd District encompasses Elmont, became the first person of Haitian descent elected to the New York State Legislature in 2012. Solages wrote in a statement that although the House vote should be applauded, progress “isn’t anywhere near the finish line” — referencing to the bill’s possible fate in the Senate and the likelihood of a presidential veto if it passes there.

“We may take this moment to rejoice at the progress made, but we cannot lose focus,” Solages said.

For advocates of the House bill, the push for TPS protections is about more than passing legislation; it reflects the realities of immigrant communities and the uncertainties they face.

The bill is now expected to move to the Senate for consideration, though a date for a vote has not yet been scheduled. Its aim is to protect Haitians who hold TPS through April 20, 2029.

“There’s always going to be things you learn on the spot,” Weingrad said. “He was all over the place, and people were pulling him in every direction — he did an amazing job. I think it was a testament to how much people care about our cause and our mission.”

Hernandez, who joined the organization in 2019, began running during the coronavirus pandemic and has since used the activity as a way to raise awareness and funds for veterans. In addition to organizing the race, he has taken on personal endurance challenges to spotlight issues affecting the veteran community.

“I am growing to love running,” Hernandez added. “I just thought this is a great challenge. Our veterans are suffering. For me, taking one day to support them means a lot.”

Kiely also emphasized her sentiments about the gambling zoning in an email response. “There are so many good options for that land,” Kiely said. “Why invite gambling development by leaving that zoning in place?”

Hempstead Village Mayor Waylan Hobbs Jr. said it is unlikely that any new developer will take over because of Las Vegas Sands’ backing out and the hesitance of others.

“I really don’t see anyone else pursuing it because most businesses watch trends. So, if another organization tried to do it and they failed, they’re not going to waste the money and time to try to do it again,” said Hobbs. “I hope that they do something with that coliseum area that’ll be beneficial to our community.” Continued from page 1

Lakeview Civic Association beautifies LIRR Station

Sixth annual Spring Clean Up Day event brings large turnout of volunteers

Last Saturday, April 18, the Lakeview Civic Association held its sixth annual Spring Clean Up Day. The association partnered with local community organizations for the event and drew a large turnout of participants.

Volunteers helped clean the area around the Lakeview LIRR station, planted flowers, and trimmed trees and bushes. Volunteers also cleaned up the blocks surrounding the station, Lakeview Peace Garden, and Harold Walker Memorial Park.

This was the sixth year of the spring cleanup, but it was the first that new Lakeview Civic Association President Dr. William Anders helped organize. Anders has been a member of the association since 2021 and was elected president earlier this year.

He has embraced his role as a community leader and is proud of the efforts he helps to organize.

“This has truly been a collective effort,” Anders said. “Lakeview residents show up with pride and a willingness to invest in where we live, turning this shared commitment into a visible progress.”

The organizations participating in the spring cleanup included Girl Scout

Troop 2420, V.I.P Small Dog Sitting, The Neighborhood Coffee Shop, and the Lakeview NAACP chapter. County Legislator Carrie Solages, State Senator Siela Bynoe, and Councilwoman Laura Ryder also attended the event.

Anders is encouraged by and appreciative of the large community turnout and support from local businesses. “Our spring community beautification builds community connection and accountability at the same time,” he said. They create a sense of community ownership and give more people an opportunity to get involved.”

“Collectively we have so much power and events like the cleanup show how much can get done when we unite,” Moms Who Care, Inc. founder and Civic Association member Aisha Demosthenes said.

To the Civic Association, cleaning the area around the train station is important for the perception of the community.

“The Lakeview station is one of the most visible and frequently used spaces in Lakeview. It’s the heart of where we begin and end our day, and often one of the first impressions of our community,” Anders said.

“When the space you live in looks good, it makes you feel good. Lakeview residents have a right to that like any other community,” Demosthenes said.

LIRR strike deadline looms

A potential Long Island Rail Road strike is looming for May 16, setting up what could be the first major work stoppage on the commuter rail system in more than three decades if no deal is reached between the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and its union employees.

At the center of the dispute is a gap over pay and working conditions. Union leaders are seeking a 9.5% wage increase covering the past three years, along with an additional 5% raise going forward, as well as retroactive pay for time worked without a contract.

The MTA, meanwhile, is offering raises but wants changes to work rules and productivity standards in return, saying it must control costs and protect the system’s long-term financial stability.

Two Presidential Emergency Boards were convened between September 2025 and March 2026 to help resolve the dispute between the LIRR and a coalition of five rail unions representing a majority of its workforce. Both boards sided with the unions, rejecting the MTA’s proposed work rule changes and recommending wage increases, helping to set the stage for the current standoff.

The dispute involves more than 3,500 workers represented by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers-Transportation Division, the Transportation Communications Union/IAM, the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Michael Sullivan, general chairman of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen, said frustration is mounting among union leaders as negotiations have stalled in recent weeks, with no follow-up meetings currently scheduled.

“I’m frustrated because we didn’t really speak about anything of substance, and they were not able to even put anything on the calendar,” Sullivan said. “They said that they would reach out to us and they have not.”

The two sides last met on March 20, continuing negotiations under federal oversight after months of delays that have repeatedly pushed back the possibility of a strike — the LIRR’s first since 1994.

MTA CEO Janno Lieber stressed the financial impact of a potential walkout and urged continued negotiations.

“It is insane for us to have a strike, not just because the harm it does to Long Islanders and to their economy, but because three days of a strike will wipe out 1.1% of wage raises that you are fighting for,” he said.

Long Island Rail Road President Rob Free, referring specifically to the findings of the Presidential Emergency Boards, said the reports acknowledged the need to address work rules even if they were not included in the final recommendations.

“It’s important if you read it, they also did cite that work rules were out there, and it was a good idea to talk about a couple of the work rules.”

Federal mediation has helped prevent a strike so far. In September, a potential walkout was avoided when federal officials stepped in and both sides agreed to continue negotiating under a coolingoff period.
