A lot has changed at Calvary Lutheran Church over the past nine months, in the interest of keeping parishioners safe and limiting the spread of the coronavirus. Congregants no longer pass collection plates at services, instead dropping off donations as they leave. They no longer exchange a “sign of peace” by hugging or shaking hands, but instead

wave or smile at one another. And the church’s pastor, the Rev. Anthony Giordano, doesn’t hand out Communion wafers, but distributes them from a device he calls the “Pez dispenser.” Despite such limits and adjustments, congregants celebrated what could become a new tradition last Saturday when they were joined by children from Calvary Nursery School for the church’s first Christmas tree lighting.

The school holds a Christmas pageant each year, but canceled it this year as the pandemic ramped up. School Director Pat Giovanniello said that she and the church administration brainstormed ideas for different, socially distanced celebrations that they could continue after the pandemic.
