“It’s not some sort of stranger from somewhere else — it’s

Authority seeks path forward with Liberty

The South Nassau Water Authority is making progress on a potential public takeover of Liberty Water. Yet, even as progress is made, one question lingers: Is a public takeover of the utility even worth it?

It was on the mind of a number of customers who voiced concerns at the water authority’s second-ever public meeting last week at the Lynbrook Public Library.

Liberty customers pay significantly more for water than Town of Hempstead customers for the same service, advocates for a public takeover claim, as well as millions in property taxes a year. But, if the cost of taking over Liberty is steeper, Lynbrook deputy mayor Michael Hawxhurst said, the South Shore may need a new plan.

“At what point does the valuation become not an effective and efficient way to do this?” Hawxhurst asked the board.

Taking over Liberty is about more than the acquisition, he added. It costs money to maintain, as well.

“What does it cost to hire all these extra people?” Hawxhurst asked. “What about customer service people? What about everything else in the community?”

John Reinhardt, the water authority’s temporary president, said that feasibility studies and valuations of assets are moving targets that must be continually

updated to remain accurate.

“Right now, we need to come up with a value agreed upon by both parties to get a value to be able to say to ratepayers, ‘This is the number, here is the feasibility,’” he said.

And the cost to acquire the utility should be cheaper, according to Claudia Borecky and former county legislator David Denenberg, since Liberty Water customers have, in part, already paid for the maintenance of the assets and should not have to pay again for the acquisition of those assets. Both are co-directors of Long Island Clean Air Water & Soil, who have pushed to make the utility public.

“The information about assets being paid for by the ratepayers has been heard dozens of times by the courts,” Reinhardt said. “And the courts, every time, have found that the ratepayers did not own the assets of any utility.”

That’s not a decision Reinhardt says he agrees with, but one that only the courts have the power to make. Still, the board would “look deeper into other decisions” made by courts to see if a different case could be made.

A public takeover would save ratepayers more than just the millions in property taxes, Denenberg said, but also the money from franchise taxes, sales taxes, and future rate increases from Liberty.

Liberty Water proposed a rate hike earlier this year that averages more than 34 percent across Nassau County, with Lyn-

brook facing a proposed 39 percent increase. The state Public Service Commission has yet to approve the rate hike, which would affect some 120,000 customers.

Not only would a public takeover save Liberty customers money from property taxes, Borecky claimed, but that it would also save ratepayers the extra money that a private company charges for profit.

“We wouldn’t have to pay for the corporate tax that the shareholders make on the profits,” she said. “We wouldn’t have to pay for that expense anymore.”

The property taxes Liberty charges is a popular talking point among proponents of a public takeover, but Hawxhurst warned that money would still have to come from somewhere.

“The $35 million in taxes is not going away,” he said. “You’re still going to have to pay those taxes. It’s moving from your right pocket to your left.”

Barbara Hafner, former president of the West Hempstead Education Association, said Liberty’s rates pose some serious ethical concerns. People should not have to pay exorbitant fees so a private company can make profit on a service people can’t live without.

“We pay taxes for a lot of things — for my sanitation, my police officers, and that’s important to me,” Hafner said. “But I should not be paying the amount of money I’m paying for water, which is a human right.”

Kiwanis of East Meadow hosts annual Thanksgiving food drive for those in need

The Kiwanis of East Meadow was back at the Uniondale Shoprite this past weekend, collecting truckloads of food, all with the best intent. This year, at least 127 families in the East Meadow School District will be receiving nonperishable food items needed for a Thanksgiving feast, as well as gift cards to help them purchase perishable items, like turkeys, and more.

Catherine Razzano, chair of the Kiwanis food drive for the last 5 years, as well as a liaison with the Key Club at East Meadow High School, an international student-led organization that’s part of Kiwanis, said they had a lot of students volunteer their time this weekend at the drive. The Kiwanis was at the Uniondale Shop Rite on both Saturday and Sunday, collecting six pickup truck loads of food, she said.

Kiwanis is informed by social workers in East Meadow schools which families are in need, and Razzano said 127 families is one of the highest numbers they’ve had in recent years. On the list of items that can be donated include box or canned potatoes, boxed stuffing, canned yams, cranberry sauce, canned vegetables and canned gravy, among many other items.

The Kiwanis also holds a food drive in the spring, which allows the club to restock pantries in the area. While the Thanksgiving drive is mostly dedicated to helping the select families in need, sometimes there is extra food, Razzano said.

“Last year, we had such an abundance that we did give some to some of the pantries,” she said. “If we do have an overflow, we will absolutely deliver to the pantries.”

The main pantries the Kiwanis services are at St. Brigid Catholic Church in Westbury, St. Martha Roman Catholic Church in Uniondale and St. Raphael Catholic Parish in East Meadow.

K-Kids clubs in East Meadow, which is the elementary participation level in the service organization, are hosting their own drives this month, and anyone in the community is welcome to donate to the main drive through Nov. 16, which will add to the total amount of food collected.

Food will be sorted at W.T. Clarke High School on Nov. 17 by Key Club members from both East Meadow and Clarke High Schools, and on Nov. 18, food gets delivered to the families in need.

“One of the nicest parts about this event is this food that gets collected goes directly into the kitchens and into the homes of families in need,” Razzano said. “There is nothing in between.”

Key Club members and their parents, or sometimes just Kiwanians, will take donations for about three to four families on Nov. 18, and deliver it in person at their doorstep.

“I am from a huge family — I have 7 siblings,” she added, “and my mother always said no child should ever go hungry. So that really is the gist of it.”

Food donations can be brought to Coldwell Banker American Homes in East Meadow at 1856 Hempstead Turnpike through Nov. 16. The office is open 7 days a week, and there’s a donation box inside.

Planning for, and then executing, inheritances is often fraught with emotion.

Most families choose to leave the inheritance “to my children in equal shares, per stirpes.”

Per stirpes is Latin meaning “by the roots” so that if a child dies before the parent, their sharegoes to their children (if any) in equal shares. If there are no children, then generally the inheritance is disregarded and their share goes to their surviving siblings in equal shares.

What about gifts to grandchildren? Let’s say one child has five children and the other has two children — seven grandchildren altogether.

When a significant gift is given to grandchildren equally, it is not uncommon for the child with two children to say “well it was my brother’s choice to have five children, why does my family end up getting less?” Good estate planning also looks at inheritances from the heirs’ point of view as well.

“Many ignorant people out there, especially the adults, that think this is OK to ignore,” Jackie Van wrote. “Kids will be kids, alright, but they should also have respect and if they do not know the severity, then they should be taught.... it must be addressed and there should be consequences.”

Eva Osher also said the “kids will be kids” excuse is not a justifiable reason for inciting hate.

“More education is needed,” she said. “Zero tolerance for this behavior — this is real news, nothing to do with politics or race. It’s about humanity. It’s a growing problem... always gets swept under the carpet.

Those who do this should be disciplined and punished.

There needs to be consequences.”

Janet Goldstein told the Herald she was a parent to East Meadow High School students in 2016, when there were a few instances of swastikas found at the school.

She said they were drawn inside the cover of the 1960 memoir “Night,” by Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor, about his experiences in Auschwitz and Buchenwald, two Nazi German concentration camps. It’s a popular read in many high school English classes.

Goldstein said swastikas were also carved into lunchroom tables, and some students drew swastikas on their wrists, posting a photo online.

Hebrew high school students approached a rabbi, and he acted, she said, arranging a presentation about anti-Zionism and antisemitism, and how to recognize it and react to it.

“The principal at EMHS, Mr. Howard, was wonderful and sent out information to the parents about it,” she said. “Guidance counselors show up, teachers show up, administration showed up, our Hebrew high school students show up, and some marginalized com-

Harvest celebration raises $465K to fight hunger STAFF REPORT The hunger crisis won’t be solved overnight, but Island Harvest took a big step to combat it last month at the food bank’s 29th annual Taste of the Harvest Celebration, which raised $465,000.

Nearly $110,000 of that will fund an additional 365 children in Island Harvest’s Kids Weekend Backpack Feeding Program, according to the Melville organization’s president and chief executive, Randi Shubin Dresner. That program acts as a supplemental food support initiative for children who rely on their school’s free breakfasts and lunches, but often don’t get enough to eat over the weekend when school is closed.

Other funds raised will help families, older adults and veterans facing hunger in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

In addition to the money raised, this year’s celebration also honored Barry and Marie Landsman, who received Island Harvest’s Above & Beyond Award.

The Bellmore couple have long been supporters of Island Harvest, conducting food drives, assisting with fundraising, and advising the nonprofit on matters involving the acquisition and financing of the organization’s main facility at 126 Spagnoli Road in Melville.

“For over two decades, we have had the privilege of working with Island Harvest,” the couple said, in a statement.

“Being the honorees at the Taste of Harvest event was a humbling and rewarding experience for us as parents and as Long Islanders, as we were honored to be a small part of raising funds for Island Harvest — in particular, the backpack program.”

The Landsmans are both attorneys, with Marie at Rivkin Radler, and Barry at Pryor Cashman.

They also have made fundraising a family tradition by involving their children, Zachary and Saria.

“It is critical we all do what we can to raise funds for this worthy cause as there are hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders who face food insecurity every day,” the Landsmans said. “These are our fellow Long Islanders, our friends and neighbors. Children. Seniors. And veterans. And, so, we hope every Long Islander joins us, and takes this moment in time to make a difference in the lives of those in need.”

Also honored was former longtime operations vice president and food procurement specialist Migdalia Otero-Terry, who received Island Harvest’s Linda Breitstone Spirit Award, named for the founder of Island Harvest. Otero-Terry was honored for her immeasurable contribution to the growth and success of the food bank during her tenure, which spanned two decades.

“I was humbled by the honor, and I find personal satisfaction that I have, and will continue to, help the Long Island community feeding those in need,” said Otero-Terry, now president and chief executive of MTC Consulting Services.

Finding unity, strength in times of war Congregation Beth Ohr welcomed speaker, thought leader and spiritual activist Yiscah Smith to its shul on Sunday, to immerse attendees in a readings and teachings, that hit close to home for many with the ongoing war in the Middle East.

Last month, Hamas, a terrorist organization that occupies the Gaza s t r i p, a t t a c ke d Israel, killing thousands and taking hundreds c a p t ive. I s r a e l retaliated, and in the weeks since YiscAh smith the fighting began, it’s been hard for many American Jews to watch a country they have such a strong connection to face the aftermaths of the initial attack.

Across the world, there has been a surge in protests and demonstrations, rooted in antisemitism, making many fear for their safety.

Smith, who is originally from New York and now based in Israel, met Beth Ohr’s rabbi, Rishe Groner, when she was studying abroad. The synagogue welcomed Smith earlier this year, and it was always planned that she would visit a second time. But during her visit on Sunday, the overarching meaning and message behind her teachings felt all the more powerful, comforting and important.

Groner referred to Smith as “a thought leader, a spiritual activist and an agent of change” “Ysicah views Judaism as a spiritual practice and relies on Jewish spiritual teachings to inform,” Groner said. “As a spiritual trailblazer, Yiscah exemplifies what it means to carve one’s own path, as she has grappled with the entanglement at the intersection of spirituality, Jewish tradition and a passionate desire to live a life of authenticity.”

Smith’s discussion at Beth Ohr was titled “Honoring the Spirit in Times of War — Strengthening Am Yisrael.”

Throughout her hour long speech, Smith read excepts by Rav Kalonymus Kalmish Shapira, the Grand Rabbi of Piaseczno, Poland, who authored a number of works and was murdered by German Nazis in a concentration camp during the Holocaust, as well as the work of Rav Kook, the first Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of British Mandatory Palestine.

Having lived in Israel for most of her adult life, Smith said “there’s so many layers and dimensions to the complexity of what’s really happening in Israel.”

The excerpts that Smith focused on throughout her discussion reflected themes of Jewish unity, self-reflection and self-understanding, spiritual contemplation and the power of vulnerability.

“Even when a person finds oneself greatly submersed in the depths of life’s mire, like today, like we’re in this gook, and we don’t know how to get out of it — it’s like quicksand of so much violence

from the news here,” she said. “And I’m worried about the disconnect that I’m sensing from what I’ve talked to my friends there, and people here. We’re so tormented by what we see happening to our siblings that we’re not seeing the positive pieces of it.”

Smith said in Israel, people are taking care of each other. The rise in antisemitism, hate towards the Jewish people, and the fear that Jews are living in, Smith said, is unimaginable.

“We are more concerned for you, than we believe you’ll ever be concerned for us,” Smith said. “My concern is a very

different concern. We are taking wcare of each other — we are uniting.

“This,” she said in reference to antisemitism around the world, “is really scary. I think some conclusive answer is we need to be more aware of what each other is really experiencing. Israelis really need to know more of what you are afraid of, and you all need to know what we’re really living with every single day.”

Bott is part of the East Meadow Kiwanis, and is chair for the newly named Frank Saracino Memorial Senior Citizen and Military Family Thanksgiving Dinner. That group has served a full Thanksgiving dinner to more than 300 senior citizens and military families in the East Meadow community for more

than 40 years.

Also among the honorees is Alvin Hartley, from the Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce, who brings more than 25 years of strategic planning to the table, helping a number of organizations develop customer service and leadership and sales training, as well as marketing plans, budgets, strategy, concepts and training.

The mural titled, “Dreaming is Free,” was created by students in Clarke’s National Art Honor Society.

Art teachers Ms. Jeannene Arcuri and Ms. Marlena Dentrone explained that teachers and students had discussed ideas for this

project during the past two years.

They also said that this mural aims to create positivity throughout the school and to promote the idea that anything is possible. The mural incorporates numerous elements such as sunsets, clouds, butterflies, nature and outer space.

The East Meadow School District thanked and commended everyone who contributed to this mural.

Say ‘ruff’ for Nassau County’s Barkfest Dressed in costume, dogs compete for top prize at Eisenhower Park Nassau County’s Eisenhower Park came alive with dogs and spirit on Oct. 29 for the annual “Barkfest.” As Long Island’s largest free pet costume contest and parade, pooches of all shapes, sizes and breeds came dressed up, for a chance to be named winner.

The event took place at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre in Field 6 of the park, and despite the rain, there was still a good turnout of Nassau County residents, and of course, their dogs.

The event was sponsored by the Nassau SPCA, Long Island’s K98.3 radio, and CSEA Nassau Local 830.

From 1 to 3 p.m., dogs that stopped by were able to linger and meet other friendly faces, and their owners were able to help pets in need, by bringing a pet food donation for local organizations that were at the event with tents.

Whether the pups were dressed up in Harry Potter gear, or as Woody from ‘Toy Story,” the creativity of owners was unmatched. In the end, Bastian, a terrier, who was dressed up as Bob Barker, the longtime host of CBS’s The Price Is Right, was named winner.

Oceanside is headed back to the Nassau Conference I football semifinals at Hofstra following an impressive 26-7 victory at third-seeded East Meadow last Saturday afternoon in a first-round playoff matchup.

The Sailors scored on the opening drive of the game and forced a stunning seven turnovers—four interceptions and three fumble recoveries—to set up another postseason meeting with Massapequa.

Junior Dillon Tveter had a pair of interceptions and a pivotal touchdown reception as time expired in the third quarter for No. 6 Oceanside (6-3), which advances to face the second-seeded Chiefs for a fourth straight season in the playoffs Thursday at 4 p.m.

Massapequa topped the Sailors 21-6 a month ago.

“I thought we played awesome defensively and had a nice opening drive to put them in an early hole,” Oceanside head coach Rob Blount said. “East Meadow does a lot of things well that worried us, but we matched their physicality and finally broke some big plays in the second half.”

Junior Jayson Constabile scored the lone touchdown for the Jets, the No. 10 preseason seed, who carried a five-game winning streak into the playoffs and finished 7-2 in longtime head coach Vin Mascia’s final campaign.

“We had only three turnovers all season before

today,” Mascia said. “I told the guys at halftime we were still very much in it despite playing our worst half of the year. But we never got into sync on offense.

Oceanside came in here battle-tested and did a great job.”

Ben Rivezzo, Brian Kraemer, Brady Nardone, Chris LaLima and Tveter had takeaways for Oceanside’s defense in the first half. However, it was still 9-0 when the unit forced East Meadow’s first punt of the day late in the third quarter. Then, on the ensuing possession, Villela hit Tveter with a short slant on third-and-10 and he took it to the house for a 64-yard touchdown.

“Everyone kept blocking for me down the field,” Tveter said. “It was nice to put some points on the board to help us win.”

Pender added a 32-yard field goal and Justin Diez broke free for a 51-yard touchdown run to round out the scoring. Simon Wareham had 8 solo tackles and Chase Haffey added an interception.

Eric Garcia had a leaping interception near the end zone to halt an Oceanside drive in the second quarter and Marcus Diaz recovered a fumble in the third for East Meadow, which was unable to get into the red zone. Constabile’s touchdown covered 52 yards.

“Probably two-thirds of our team had never played a varsity snap before this season,” Mascia said. “This group rose to the occasion and got better week after week. It didn’t end the way we wanted, but it was a tremendous season.”

Clarke finishes second in county meet

The Clarke boys’ cross-country team followed up a strong regular season on Oct. 28 when it placed second in the Nassau Class III Championships at Bethpage State Park.

The runner-up finish was the best in school history for the Rams. For the entire season, Clarke finished second in both its conference and division while multiple runners set personal records in both the 2.5 mile and 5,000 meter races.

“We had a g reat season and everything came down to a very small point differential,” coach Brian Doxey said. “One of our league meets was a tie that came down to the sixth man which we won and the next week was a threeway tie. I would just drill into the runners that every point matters and you can’t just settle, you have to be kicking for the whole entire race.”

In the county championship, Oyster Bay had been such a dominant force that second place was always the goal for the Rams and anything better would be huge upset.

“Second place was wide open to

anybody, we just needed to focus on beating as many people as possible,” Doxey said. “Sure enough we g rabbed second by two points, which is insane. Insane. Fourth place was just five Points behind us, which is even more incredible. Five points separating second through fourth really proved that every point that matters.”

Clarke had a handful of really good runners this fall and was anchored by All-County honorees Ryan Melkun and Noah Saenz, who finished ninth and 10th in the county championship. Both followed with solid showings at last Saturday’s State Qualifier at Bethpage, with Melkun, a junior, crossing the line 21st and Saenz, a sophomore, 29th.

“Having Ryan and Noah as our one-two punch helped us out tremendously,” Doxey said. “There really was no clear one between the two, they’ve been so close all season.

If anything, I think Ryan might have a slight edge with winning more, but it’s not by much. Noah was always right on his tail.”

Melkun’s time at the State Qualifer was 17-minutes, 46.37-seconds, and Saenz finished the course in

18.20.9.

Constantine Pozapalidis (23rd at counties), Jacob Soriano (28th), and Nicholas Lindo were All-Conference, giving Clarke a very strong top five. Lindo, who did not compete in the county championships, had the slacked picked up by his brother Sebastian who turned out to be a big contributor, finishing 33rd and picking up crucial points. “[Po zapalidis, Soriano, and Lindo] are always battling throughout every race,” Doxey said. “Having our three, four, and five constantly finish races as well as they did, that’s what made us so successful this year. It was what really mattered in those tight scoring meets.

Doxey is very optimistic about next season. Many of his key runners will be returning in 2024 while competition across the county is losing a ton of production. Keep an eye out for the Rams in 2024.

Sophomore Noah Saenz rounded out the top 10 in the Nassau Class III championship race to help the Rams place second as a team.

East Meadow’s Hall sisters run to states

It will be a family affair for East Meadow at the New York State Cross Country Championships.

Sophomore Zaria Hall won the girls’ 5K race by just four-tenths of a second and older sister Anaya placed a comfortable fourth during the state qualifier at Bethpage State Park last Saturday and both will be heading to Verona this weekend.

Senior Paige Barnett was 10th and freshman Lila Doyle and junior Allison Twible placed 23rd and 27th, respectively, in the 99-girl field to help the Jets finish second in the team competition behind Syosset. Marcheline Simbulan was 31st and fellow freshman Anvi Bonanthaya finished 37th.

“They really met our expectations,” coach Michael Ringhauser said of his girls. “Syosset is a really good team, so we were a little short on the team score, but looking at it as seven individuals, the girls really ran about as well as they could have.”

East Meadow, which captured its first regular season conference title in about

15 years, according to Ringhauser, competed as a team in last year’s state event and the Halls return as individuals.

Zaria was 43rd at Verona last fall and Amaya was 97th.

“The two of them really hit their peak this season and look to do really big things at the state championship,” Ringhauser said.

Zaria Hall’s time of 18 minutes, 52.70 seconds on Saturday was the secondfastest in school history at Bethpage.

Ringhauser said the plan was to break the race down into segments and have Hall sit back until around the last halfmile before making a push.

She eventually made her move at leader Isabella Spagnoli of Great Neck South and the two battled it out near the finish line.

“With 400 meters to go, [Hall] just started pulling away,” Ringhauser recalled. “Spagnoli has a good kick too, so it was tight until the end, but Zaria was able to pull it out in the last 50 meters or so.”

Anaya Hall finished with a time of 19:23.80, the fourth-best time on the track in program history and 10 seconds better than fifth-place Eve Siff-Scherr of

Port Washington.

Though her run didn’t result in a trip to Verona, Barnett’s performance was the latest example of her stark improvement from 2022.

“Paige Barnett has come a really long way,” Ringhauser said. “The difference between last year and this year, she’s dropped 56 seconds in her 5K. She went from 21st in the county last year to seventh this year, so she’s just really let a good effort and helped mentor three really good freshmen that we have coming up.”

The boys’ team finished sixth on Saturday, with senior Zyad Mohamed placing ninth with a time of 17:07.40, his fastest and the 11th-best performance in school history on that course. He ran 17:51.7 the previous week during the county championships at Bethpage.

“He’s been our front runner the whole season,” Ringhauser said. “He’s really taken to trying to establish a little bit of a legacy for himself, but this is the first time he’s earned All-County honors.”

Junior Anthony Palmeri was 26th with a time of 17:51.90, almost two seconds better than his performance at the counties.

East Meadow captures first-ever title

History was made Nov. 1 as East Meadow completed an improbable run to its first-ever Nassau County boys’ soccer championship with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Plainview in the Class AAA final at Mitchel Athletic Complex.

The lowest seed in the eight-team playoff tournament, the Jets scored all four of their goals in the first half in brisk and breezy conditions and held off a late surge by the second-seeded Hawks, who captured the Class AA county title last fall.

“The last 15 minutes felt like an eternity,” East Meadow coach Bryan Horrmann said. “I kept glancing at the clock and it seemed like it was barely moving. Credit to Plainview they really battled. It was an incredible feeling when that horn finally sounded. It’s surreal.”

Senior striker Robert Derwin scored twice, and senior Raymond McLeod and junior Dylan Wauchope both found the back of the net for a third straight postseason game for the Jets (10-5-2), who eliminated top-seeded Uniondale and No. 4 Baldwin in the quarterfinals and semis, respectively.

“Coming into the playoffs as the eighth seed, nobody really gave us a chance,” said Derwin, who joined the defensive zone in crunch time. “We believed in each other and our coaches

It didn’t take long for East Meadow to make a statement the clock wasn’t going to strike midnight on its Cinderella story. McLeod headed in a long throw-in from senior Evan Weinstein just 5:34

into the match and the Jets never relinquished the lead.

“It’s amazing to make school history,” said senior goalkeeper Jack DeVoti, who worked behind a defense led by senior Roderick Rodriguez, juniors Andrew Velasquez and Esteben Canales-Moreno,

and freshman Jose Flores.

Derwin’s first goal came with 10 minutes remaining in the opening half off a feed from Canales-Moreno and made it 2-0. After Nicolas Shuleshov got Plainview on the board with a penalty kick, Derwin answered with a blast from 30 yards out and Wauchope delivered his third penalty kick goal of the playoffs for a 4-1 advantage.

The Jets needed every bit of the cushion.

“Plainview’s a great team that beat us during the regular season,” Horrmann said. “We knew no lead was going to be too safe, especially with the wind at their backs in the second half.

Our guys just kept rising to the challenge and I’m so proud of them.”

The Hawks got within 4-2 at intermission on Manny Paulo’s goal with less than three minutes left in the opening half.

Plainview, which defeated East Meadow 2-0 Sept. 14, dominated possession in the second half and finally got within one with 18 minutes to go on Shuleshov’s second of the game.

“It was a huge difference defending in the second half,” DeVoti said. “It was a real challenge with the wind in our faces. They kept hitting the ball over the top, but fortunately we have a strong defense.”

The Jets fell in last Sunday’s Long Island Class AAA championship game, 4-0 to unbeaten Brentwood.

“What it came down to was, we have a positive message — protect our families, our taxpayers, communities,” McKevitt said of his win Tuesday night.

McKevitt maintained his seat with 66 percent of the vote. Biju Chacko, his Democratic opponent, did not participate in a Herald Roundtable. Chacko could not be reached for comment.

Thomas Muscarella, the incumbent councilman in Town of Hempstead’s 2nd district, was also re-elected to a second term. He stressed the issue of taxation in Hempstead, where the town held the line. With ramped-up costs of food, utilities and rent caused by inflation, Muscarella said the town needs to look into creative revenue generators to help alleviate the financial burden on constituents.

Muscarella was appointed to the Town Board in 2019, filling the seat left open when Republican Ed Ambrosino resigned. Based on the unof ficial results, Muscarella won re-election with 66 percent of the vote, receiving 13,526 votes out of the nearly 20,400 ballots

Nedelka ultimately conceded after receiving only 34 percent of the vote. He was happy, he said, to have raised issues of concern in the commu-

nity through his campaign.

“I embraced a couple of issues — the casino, transparency, accountability in government,” Nedelka said. “I pointed out areas where, instead of just holding the line on taxes, we could make some serious cuts and reduce bloated patronage. We could’ve probably lowered the line on taxes.”

What to look for when you buy a house, Part 2 Q. My kids are looking for a house, and I’ve been going with them. It’s hard to swallow how expensive real estate has gotten since my wife and I bought our first, and last, home 36 years ago with a 14.9 percent interest rate. Could you give some tips on what to look for, beyond basics, because every home we look at needs some kind of work, and I wonder if any of it can be done without a permit (which involves more time and money, and increased taxes), and with the fewest problems later on.

A. Most things done to improve a property, even air conditioning, sheds and driveways (depending on jurisdiction) require review and approval with architectural plans, applications and permits. People think they’re saving money, or enjoy the feeling of getting away with something, by avoiding getting permission. Homeowners onte eeper often learn the hard way that someday, somebody is going to pay the increased price.

Add to that the fact that either the contractor had no idea, or no intention, of building to regulations, or the homeowner just assumed the person they hired knew what the laws were. After all, why would someone who skirts the approval process be expected to follow any other rules? Construction, as I’ve often said, is like the Wild West. The “sheriffs” never summon, fine or prosecute the perpetrators of the time-consuming act of building — only the assuming homeowner who either had it built or passed it on to an unsuspecting buyer.

“Safety first,” you’ll always hear, but the way the system is set up, it’s rigged against the consumer.

They’ll all disagree with me and hate that I write this, but the people you hired with the intention of making sure the sale goes smoothly, that you get the house, are not, in every instance, the ones who question the legitimacy of the construction — whether it has permits, was built right or will last.

If you find one who does, you’ve found a gem, but many times, whistleblowers, instead, appear to be “too picky” when in fact they are helping you.

I love speaking with any attorney, real estate agent or inspector about how to help you out and get you through the problem they brought to your attention. But many say nothing. They just don’t have the background or, frankly, in some cases, the interest in whether the home you’re choosing is clear of construction defects unrelated to their specific job, so you may only find out about it much later. The real estate agent, the attorneys, the title company, the bank inspector, the appraiser and the home inspector may even have clauses in their agreements exempting them from things they might have mentioned.

In many cases, where I discover things years later, when I’m called to review the papers and property, I have the task of answering the question, “Why didn’t anybody tell me this?” More to come …

he war in the Middle East has become more than a conflict between Israel and Hamas. And it is more than a regional confrontation of Israel vs. Iran, which utilizes Hamas and Hezbollah as proxy fighters and front men in its campaign to destroy Israel and its people.

In many ways, the war has become a struggle for Western civilization and for the survival of our values. The Oct. 7 assault on Israel

by Hamas constituted the nadir of human degradation. Man’s inhupETER manity to man.

Rapes, mutilaKinG tions, murders and beheadings even of children should have caused all people to call for Hamas to be consigned to humanity’s ash heap.

Instead we see hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people taking to the streets around the world to denounce Israel. More than just pro-Palestinian, many shouting “From the river to the sea!” are pro-Hamas and anti-Israel. And all too many are antisemitic, displaying Nazi swastikas.

Particularly disturbing are the large numbers of Americans taking part in these demonstrations. College students betray a shocking lack of knowledge of history, and too many university heads

tolerate antisemitism on their campuses, while Jewish students feel threatened and unsafe. The media increasingly show a moral equivalence between Israel and its murderous enemies, Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah. The most disgraceful episode was a New York Times false front-page story accusing Israel of bombing a Gaza hospital based on reports from Hamas.

A number of LGBTQ+ organizations, all of which would be violently oppressed if not murdered

by Hamas, are siding against Israel. Most bizarrely, so too are some Jewish groups.

Viewing, listening to and reading this incessant anti-Israel vitriol, which is raging in America less than five weeks after the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, moved me to compare how America reacted to World War II, when our survival was threatened, with how so many Americans want Israel to react today.

Before the attack on Pearl Harbor, we were decidedly isolationist. Hero aviator Charles Lindbergh was foremost in the pro-isolationist America First movement. While there was an element of Nazi support, most isolationists genuinely believed that Europe’s wars were for Europe and Asia’s wars for Asia.

None of this involved the United States.

As for Nazi aggression and Hitler’s persecution of Jews, European countries

had been attacking one another throughout history, and one group or another was always being persecuted.

Most significant, the Atlantic and Pacific oceans were natural barriers against any foreign war impacting the United States. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was re-elected to his third term in 1940, and pledged not to have “American boys fighting in foreign wars.”

Then came Pearl Harbor, and our isolation ended overnight. Young men rushed to enlist in the military. Rather than being hotbeds of resistance like they are today, colleges and universities strongly supported the war effort: Not only did students enlist, but campuses were used as training centers. Women, immortalized as Rosie the Riveter, worked in factories and defense plants.

No one called for a ceasefire. No one challenged FDR when he ordered the firebombing of Tokyo, not for any military action to show Japan that we would do whatever had to be done to defeat and destroy the Japanese empire. When the tide of war shifted toward America and our allies, no one called for a pause to allow the distribution of food and fuel to the German and Japanese people.

When Dresden and other German cities were bombed, reporters were not in the streets, asking German mothers or senior citizens how they felt about it.

ter of Japan, were not given equal time with Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. When offers to negotiate were suggested by Germany, they were rebuffed by FDR, who demanded unconditional surrender.

And after Germany and Japan were defeated, the United States helped build both into flourishing democracies and industrial powers. Most significantly, when America and the world realized the full extent of Hitler’s depravity, and how the Holocaust had almost decimated the entirety of the Jewish people, we declared “Never again!” brought Nazi leaders to justice at Nuremberg and recognized Israel as the Jewish homeland.

Today Israel is under siege, and much of America and the Western world, which fought so valiantly to destroy Nazi Germany and Imperialist Japan, is attempting to restrict Israel’s ability to preserve its very survival, and is enabling — and in some cases supporting — the present-day Nazi axis of Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah. This abdication of moral responsibility and failure of will by Western countries in the face of this mortal, existential threat to Israel threatens not just Israel’s survival as a nation, but our survival as a civilization.

We must not allow “Never again!” to be supplanted by “From the river to the sea!” We must stand with Israel.

A war overseas, yet close to home

he war in Israel is one that I have clear opinions about, and one that has affected my personal life. Yet at this time, when expressing thoughts is more important than ever, I find doing so more difficult than ever.

I’ve never had to fear for my safety when it comes to choosing a side, supporting it, and offering a personal perspective in response to global events. Now, however, I can’t help but think cautiously about the ideas I put forward.

I’ve written about current events before, but never could I have iLAnA that I GREEnBERG conceived would need to provide a teenager’s perspective on the war that’s occurring in my family’s backyard.

There is no use hiding it, so I will state outright: I am an American Jew. My father and my mother’s father are Israe-

li, and I have hundreds of relatives in the tiny country that I call my “homeland” in the Middle East. Now, because of my identity, I am greeted by Nassau County police officers from the 6th Precinct when I walk into my Jewish school each morning. My hearingimpaired grandmother, who lives in a peaceful village outside Jerusalem, can discern the roar of sirens and the thump of missiles landing in her neighborhood. My teachers have children who may never return home.

My people cannot continue to suffer brutally at the hands of terrorists. For my safety, I have been taught to think twice before making that statement.

In my tight-knit New York Jewish community, the unfortunate reality is that everyone knows somebody who has been killed, kidnapped, traumatized, or tortured by Hamas terrorists.

My daily classes are shadowed by the hollow faces of my classmates, distracted

by the anxiety of knowing that their families are running to shelters. The television lulls me to sleep with talk of bombings and invasions. I am scared.

I am scared of the horrors that are occurring, with no end in sight, and of the possibility that the terror can travel too close to my own home — in this country that my ancestors have relied on as a haven from persecution for generations.

And yet, while my family, friends and peers suffer, I know that the Gazans cannot continue to suffer, either. My stomach churns at the graphic images, the tragic stories of refugees fleeing their homes, which have been reduced to rubble, and civilians crying for their families. I pray that Palestinians can live happily and safely — and that safety comes alongside, not at the cost of, the safety of Israel.

I am pained by the loss of innocent lives, and mourn the loss of our friends. I

fear for the lives of Israelis, and fear for the lives of Gazan civilians. I want Israel to exist peacefully, and I want Gaza to be more than a city of rubble. Must these all be mutually exclusive?

I want nothing more than peace, yet many are convinced that a brutal war is the only solution.

I wish that I could offer a resolution to these conflicting emotions, but in this war, there may not be one. Death does not pick sides. Need I explain that a bullet will kill an Israeli and it will kill a Palestinian, without considering in which country the lifeless flesh originated?

Regardless of the sides taken in this brutal conflict, I hope that the one thing we can all agree on is the sanctity of human life — though not everyone does.

Maybe one day, that will be enough to unite us in a common desire for peace.

For now, I need not continue to express my thoughts on this tragedy. The thousands of voiceless bodies speak loudly enough.

Small businesses need us, and we need them

ur world is seemingly dominated by the twists and turns of the nation’s largest corporations, where billions of dollars are constantly at play, and millions of jobs on the table.

Because of that, it’s easy to overlook the businesses that aren’t trading on the New York Stock Exchange, or that may not have a lot to spend on marketing and branding — where the owner knows every employee, and every employee knows her.

These are our small businesses — our mom-and-pop businesses. And while they might not be the Apples or the Disneys of the world, they remain vital to our communities, and our very lives.

There are 90,000 businesses on Long Island, according to Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, and a vast majority of them employ fewer than 50 people. Many might not be household names beyond their immediate neighborhoods, but where they are known, they are important.

Yet with each passing year, our society pulls further away from the small businesses that we so cherish and pushes further into the realm of the megacorporations. Not that there isn’t a place for the conglomerates — it’s just best that they don’t devour too much of our economic base.

Small businesses account for 44 percent of U.S. economic activity, according

to a report from the federal Small Business Administration just ahead of the coronavirus pandemic, and their share of the nation’s gross domestic progress is slowly, but surely, shrinking. Between 1998 and 2014, the small business share of GDP dropped from 48 percent to 43.5.

Small business GDP itself is growing — but just under 1.5 percent a year, as compared to the 2.5 percent of larger businesses.

A lot of that shifting began after the 2008 recession, and continued as big-box stores grew dramatically, as did online retailers like Amazon. That’s a primary reason why organizations like the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce — which represents more than 50 chambers of commerce in the county, and more than 10,000 businesses — are so keen to promote “Shop Local.”

Small businesses need us, and we need them. Small businesses provide more jobs and more opportunities to people in their communities, corporate recruiter Martin Rowinski wrote in Forbes magazine last year.

“Successful small businesses put money back into their local community through paychecks and taxes, which can support the creation of new small businesses, and improve local public services,” Rowinski wrote. “No matter how small it starts — one, two, five, 10 employees — within that town, the city or the county, your small business cre-

ates new economies where once there was nothing.”

And that should be the definitive conclusion to this discussion, but sadly, it’s not. While it’s nearly impossible to find anyone who would consciously choose a large company over a hometown business, it still happens all the time. Many times, it’s because we simply don’t think about the impact of ordering something from Amazon, or ordering a pizza from a chain rather than a local pizzeria.

More often than not, it comes down to cost — more often than not, it’s cheaper to head to Home Depot than to a local hardware store. Or to the 7-Eleven instead of the family-owned bodega on the corner. There is a place for the Home Depots and the 7-Elevens in our communities — but just not at the cost of local business. And it’s important to keep that in mind when we choose where we spend our money.

One of the biggest spending periods of the year is coming up after Thanksgiving, and there will be so many businesses chasing after us, hoping to receive the dollars we’re looking to spend.

But let’s make every effort we can to keep those dollar right here in our communities. “Shop Local” isn’t just a slogan — it’s key to keeping our communities thriving. And it ensures that our small businesses will never be overlooked.

Letters Does Congressman D’Esposito want to solve the border crisis?

To the Editor: U.S. Rep. Anthony D’Esposito’s partisan column last week, “The Biden border crisis comes home to New York,” blaming President Biden, Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams for the influx of migrants at our border, exemplifies the dysfunction of the House of Representatives. It’s up to Congress to work across the aisle and introduce laws that have a chance of passing. But the Republicans don’t really want sensible immigration laws, because they want to scare people into voting for them.

Any fool can see that D’Esposito is intentionally introducing legislation that he knows will never be enacted just so he can say, “See, the Republicans are trying to keep you safe, while the Democrats want an open border.” Keep an eye out for a tax-paid mailer that will mention yet another bill that will never become law.

D’Esposito conveniently failed to mention that he refused to support Biden’s comprehensive aid plan, which would not only give $14.3 billion in aid to Israel, but also direct $14 billion to boost the number of border agents, increase staffing for

processing asylum cases and install new machines at the border that detect fentanyl.

D’Esposito also failed to mention that 93 percent of fentanyl coming over our border is smuggled by U.S. citizens coming through legal entries. So if D’Esposito wants to find real solutions to the fentanyl

epidemic, why wouldn’t he vote to pass Biden’s aid package, which would do just that?

D’Esposito’s solution to New York City’s rising costs of sheltering migrants is to defund the effort. Please tell me how that makes sense. One of the major reasons why

t is a commonly held frustration of Long Island residents that our governments seem to always be behind the curve, as opposed to ahead of it.

Quite regularly we hear the phrase uttered that government “must become proactive rather than reactive.”

As a lawmaker, I often hear this complaint when someone is describing a dilapidated municipal building, a deteriorating sports field or a poorly maintained road. The major consequences here — almost always extra construction costs for taxpayers JosHUa — add to the affordability crisis LaFaZan we are facing.

But where reactive government is becoming very dangerous relates to the remarkable developments in the world of artificial intelligence. Experts are warning that the consequences of government falling too far behind in terms of rules

and protections here will be nothing short of catastrophic.

Nassau County must heed this warning. That’s why I’m seeking to propose new legislation called the Artificial Intelligence Privacy Act. Researchers are exploring the viability of making it a misdemeanor offense to clone someone’s voice or image using artificial intelligence without their consent. The bill I propose would affirm our residents’ right to privacy from artificial intelligence tools, and allocate new resources to the Nassau County Police Department to train personnel and collaborate with federal officials to enforce that right.

As new AI technology continues to proliferate and grow in sophistication even beyond what humans can comprehend, neither laws nor lawmakers’ understanding of this new landscape have kept up — and we’re already beginning to see the consequences.

clone the voice of a family member so they can fake a hostage situation and extort a ransom. Consider the cyberbully who uses AI to clone the image of an individual and create scenarios that never existed. Or, most egregiously, take those bad actors who exploit AI to create and distribute explicit sexual images of women and children.

Data corroborates the cause for concern here.

According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, AI tools with malicious intent have created 100,000 computer-generated fake nude images of women without their consent or knowledge. More troubling yet, an AI tool kit was utilized to generate text depicting the sexual exploitation of children.

It is long past time for our government to get serious about protecting the privacy of its citizenry. In my estimation, there is no longer time left to wait.

Let me be clear: This proposal is not birthed of hostility toward AI as a whole,

Although Biden brought inflation down lower than any other industrialized nation, prices at the grocery stores will still be high as long as our farmers are unable to find workers.

But of course, D’Esposito fails to mention that Hochul passed a bill that will allow migrants to work in New York after 30 days instead of a 180-day wait. Her program matches migrants with employers, filling 1,300 jobs on Long Island alone. This will get migrants out of shelters, giving them the ability to provide for their families while they seek asylum. Real solutions to real problems.

What D’Esposito should be doing is initiating a similar program on the federal level. Other countries do just that. But no, because then he won’t be able to scare his voters into thinking that criminal migrants are traveling 2,000 miles from the border to Merrick just so they can steal deodorant from CVS. Caregivers need more support from Albany To the Editor: November is National Family Caregivers Month. In New York, 546,000 family caregivers are providing care worth over $19 billion to their loved ones with dementia.

Though these caregivers create significant savings for the state, they are not getting

or the tech sector — one that contains the cutting-edge new companies that we must attract to our region so that we can secure our tax base and stop Long Island’s exodus of talented young professionals.

In fact, we as a county would be wise to welcome pioneering tech companies specializing in AI to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems. If there are health care firms using AI for preventive detection of disease, or environmental firms using AI to enhance stormdetection systems or to bolster conservation efforts, we should absolutely be aggressively courting those companies to set up shop here.

However, it is unacceptable that our government currently lacks an adequate understanding of AI and the tools that are needed to best protect residents from its abuses. The Artificial Intelligence Privacy Act I am seeking to propose would represent the first step of many in the right direction, toward a balance between innovation and privacy.

The funding for New York’s Alzheimer’s Disease Community Assistance Program, or AlzCAP, which offers care consultations, support groups, educational programs and other services, has been stagnant for years, while the number of caregivers who need these services has continued to grow, especially since 2020.

I have seen the care-giving struggle firsthand for five years. My grandma has Alzheimer’s, and my mother is her caregiver. My mother must balance caring for my grandmother while doing the same for my autistic brother. And she does this while trying to deal with the other demands of her life. She’s not alone — there are many of these “sandwich caregivers” with similar stories. It is imperative that New York support them, not only because it will mitigate their financial, emotional and physical struggles, but also because it will be less of a financial burden for the state than nursing home care.

Taking care of someone with Alzheimer’s is extremely expensive. One study found that 47 percent of family caregivers have cut back on their food, transportation and health care expenses to pay for a loved one’s care. Also, many caregivers struggle with mental health issues, such as depression, and often don’t have the financial resources to take care of their own physical health.
