In the 1970s, East Meadow’s Prospect Park was the place to find Nassau County’s best basketball players at night, including high school and college players and the occasional professional like Julius Erving.

As a skinny 12-year-old, Matt Doherty, now 59, would pedal his bike as fast as he could after dinner to arrive at the park, three blocks from

Growing to 6 feet 7, he went on to win state championships at Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville, and he was recruited to play college ball at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1981 with three teammates and their

coach for the College Basketball Issue. Doherty was a junior and a Tar Heels starter when the team captured the 1982 NCAA men’s basketball championship with Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins and James Worthy.

Doherty never played in the NBA, but he became head coach at the University of Notre Dame and UNC. His accomplishments were driven by his early years in East Meadow, he said, as one of five children in an Irish Catholic family.

At Prospect Park, he learned about meritocracy, the system by which talent is rewarded according to achievement. All that mattered was one’s ability to help the team, he said, noting, “If you lost at the park, you sat.”

Then he got a job coaching at Davidson College in 1990. “We worked 12 hours a day,” he said. “I didn’t have that passion for my work on Wall Street.”

He left two years later to assistant coach basketball at the University of Kansas, where he stayed for seven years.

Doherty was then hired by the University of Notre Dame in 1999 to his dream job as head coach, he said. Then, in 2000, he was recruited by Jordan and Smith to return to UNC as head coach, staying until 2003.

“We ranked number one the first year, and I was National Coach of the Year,” he said. “But the next year we didn’t do very well. I had a young team, and it hurt us the third year, and we couldn’t recover.”

Doherty was forced to resign, a stinging public humiliation, he said. He then went on a “leadership journey,” studying

at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate School of Business. Now he works with small to midsize companies helping people become better leaders.

Doherty lives in Mooresville, N.C., with his wife, Kelly. They have two children, Tucker, 24, and Hattie, 22, who lives in Long Beach.

“I’m coaching, but not basketball,” Doherty said. “I’m coaching leadership.

I’ve learned to grow, and I think we should all be lifelong learners. We need to learn how we can make things better.”

The event featured demonstrations by various units in the NCPD including the Emergency Services Unit, K-9, Mounted Unit, Bureau of Special Operations, Arson/ Bomb Squad and Electronics Squad followed by giveaways distributed by members of Community Affairs and the National Champion NCPD Explorers.

“The most important thing about this event is bringing together the Police Department and the community,” said Derek Garcia. “We want to make sure there is clear communication. Here, kids and parents can come and enjoy the different tools and animals that they use.”

According to a report done by Gallup, an American analytics and advisory com-

pany based in Washington D.C., from 2019 to 2020, “confidence in the police fell five points to 48%, marking the first time in the 27-year trend that this reading is below the majority level.”

“It’s nice when the police can come and demonstrate what they do,” Garcia said.

“Everyone is welcome. The most important part is that police officers and the community have a chance to talk and have a dialogue.”

Curran agreed. “The more positive interactions you can have when everyone just sees themselves as human beings and as community people and as all a part of the solution, the better,” she said. “That is what makes communities safe.”

Abelove challenges Clavin for supervisor

Our town’s fiscal strength under my administration has been recognized with credit rating upgrades from two top Wall Street credit agencies – Moody’s and Standard & Poors. I will continue to work hard to demonstrate the highest regard for taxpayers, while providing top-notch services, enhancing roadways and facility upgrades.

Jason Abelove is challenging Don Clavin for Town of Hempstead supervisor.

Clavin was the town’s receiver of taxes for nearly two decades before defeating Laura Gillen to become supervisor in 2019. Abelove, an attorney, is running for office for the first time.

Ahead of Election Day on Nov. 2, the Herald asked the candidates questions about their goals and issues facing the community.

Abelove: The town has a $400 million

Herald: What would some of your top priorities be if elected?

Clavin: Tax relief is at the top of my priorities. I worked alongside a bipartisan Town Board to freeze taxes for 202, and I have proposed a tax cut for 2022. On my first day in office, I slashed the supervisor’s staff spending by half, saving taxpayers $1 million annually. Keeping my word on improving roadways and facilities, I am dedicating $75 million to road repaving and infrastructure upgrades. In addition, I am spending $10 million on parks improvements, and look forward to implementing an array of enhancements to community parks across America’s largest township.

I am committed to providing tax relief, while providing top-notch services and doing more for residents. I will also continue to work with my colleagues on the board to lead our township during the pandemic. Using millions of dollars in federal CARES funds, we provided over 7,000 free Covid-19 vaccines, thousands of no-cost Covid-19 tests, personal protective equipment kits for businesses, millions of meals to residents in need, aid to front line entities, air filters for seniors and more.

Modernizing town government continues to be a priority, as we took a step by creating an online portal for Building Department services, streamlining the application process.

Abelove: My top priorities are to lower

taxes and bring equity to the delivery of town services. For too long, the town has wasted money on high salary patronage jobs, bloated budgets, expensive mailers and inflated no bid contracts to Republican donors. It’s time we relocated our budget away from sweetheart contracts for campaign contributors to critical services and road repair.

When I eliminate wasteful spending, we will improve our downtowns while investing in our local infrastructure.

For example, I worked with the board to establish our region’s first outdoor dining initiative in the spring of 2020, which waived all permit fees and expedited the process for restaurant owners to establish or expand outdoor dining options. This initiative potentially saved restaurant owners thousands of dollars in permit fees and provided them with the opportunity to offer additional dining options for customers as they returned to restaurants following the Covid-19 shutdowns. Hundreds of restaurants are participating in the program, which we are extending through the fall of 2022.

We also assisted small businesses as they sought to reopen safely and successfully — through millions of dollars allocated in CARES funds, we distributed thousands of PPE kits to small businesses. I instituted an Economic Advisory Council, comprising a group of leaders in business, industries, higher education and community organizations to work on strategies to navigate businesses, residents and the local economy during the pandemic.

In addition, through a partnership with Northwell Health, we provided free Covid-19 testing for essential workers, an effort to support the dedicated employees who were working throughout the heights of the pandemic to provide essential services to residents. We recognize the importance of our downtowns for the success of local businesses and the economy. Through Operation Clean Sweep, we have crews making their way through downtowns across Hempstead to keep these areas clean and pristine. In addition, we are revital-

izing downtowns with brick-paved walkways, Victorian streetlights and more. Finally, I have worked in support of mixed-used development and other smart growth priorities, and will continue to work to support initiatives, projects and programs that spur our local economy and support local businesses as they recover from the pandemic.

Abelove: The town received $133 million

in federal CARES money, three-quarters of which was used for raises and promotions to political insiders, and renovating the supervisor’s bathroom in Town Hall. The town also promoted a $40 million stimulus plan, but did not fund the plan. We will use the CARES money to provide direct support to small businesses. We will streamline permitting, promote job fairs and lower taxes to make business thrive in the town. Small businesses are the cornerstone of our community, and we must do everything we can to ensure the success of our small businesses throughout our Covid19 recovery. As a small business owner myself, I know the stress of making payroll every week. Under my administration, Hempstead will distribute the federal relief money following the Boost Nassau model.

Herald: What more can be done to provide tax relief to Town of Hempstead residents?

Clavin: Tax relief is my top priority as I froze town taxes for 2021, and I have proposed a tax cut for 2022. Slashing unnecessary spending has been my commitment since I entered office. I cut $1 mil-

budget and is not responsible for police or other first responder services. With this bloated budget, I truly believe that we can provide more services for less money. Taxes are high because of the number of political appointees making six-figure salaries, no bid contracts and waste such as $5 million in needless mailings and placing elected officials’ names on every town sign. Having the political will to end the waste, putting taxpayer’s priorities over the politicians and running the town with an eye toward service rather than re-election will save our residents millions of dollars.

Herald: Given the number of infrastructure issues within the town, how can necessary projects be completed while still keeping taxes low and keeping the work within the proposed budget?

Clavin: We have significantly increased

our investment in capital improvements for roadways over the previous administration. Working with a bipartisan board, we are dedicating $75 million in capital funds for roadway and infrastructure improvements. In addition, I recently introduced the “pothole patrol,” an effort to expedite roadway repairs using state-of-the-art pothole repair vehicles and promoting a hotline for residents to report potholes in their neighborhood. Our efforts to improve town infrastructure is critical for the safety and quality of life of our residents, while still freezing town taxes for 2021 and cutting town taxes in 2022.

Abelove: Our town’s primary responsi-

bility is local infrastructure, and as everyone can see, the current administration is failing. Our roads are crumbling before our eyes and the town is not being adequately cared for. The top priority should be infrastructure in every corner of the town, not just Republican strongholds. We will place our resources on infrastructure based upon need and place our focus on infrastructure issues over mailings, signage and photo opportunities. There is more than enough budgeted for the needed repairs. All we need is a change in leadership. When elected, I plan to trim the town’s bloated budget, while allocating additional resources to road paving.

Reserves. The memorial’s construction will be a joint project of Heroes Among Us, a Glen Cove-based nonprofit that supports veterans across the region, the United Veterans Organization of Nassau County and local Veterans of Foreign Wars posts.

Veteran John Sottnik, commander of American Legion Post 1273 in Wantagh, said all veterans have made sacrifices and should be recognized for their efforts.

“Every war is an individual pursuit, none are the same, and they all deserve their recognition for their sacrifices,” said Sottnik, who served in the Iraq War in 2006.

The monument, designed by 23-year-old Franklin Square resident Maya Fernandez, will feature a battlefield cross flanked by two marble walls. The walls will display images of a kneeling male soldier, a kneeling female soldier, and maps of Iraq and Afghanistan.

“We’re excited to have the assistance from our community to properly respect and honor our veterans in building this monument, which we feel was overdue,” Virginia Cervasio, founder of Heroes Among Us, said in a statement.

The memorial will not include the veterans’ names, but may display a ribbon to highlight service members who died by suicide after leaving the service.

“Now, finally, our most recent conflicts will be memorialized as well,” County Executive Laura Curran said at the

There will be a fundraiser on Friday at BrewSA in Freeport to raise money for the memorial.

“As the county commander for the Nassau County Council VFW, I am pleased to be able to assist with this important memorial,” Christian Peterkin said in a statement. “This monument is a tribute to our Afghanistan and Iraq veterans, and this will be another way for us to engage with our fellow vets and get them involved.”

After a restricted spring season with limited fans, Seaford’s James McHugh had last Saturday’s homecoming game against Clarke circled on his calendar.

The senior running back lit up the scoreboard before a standing-room-only crowd at Ray Buckley Field of Dreams with 202 yards rushing and four touchdowns. He also made his presence felt on defense with 15 tackles at linebacker as part of a 41-14 win that kept Seaford unbeaten at 6-0 heading into the home stretch of the season.

“This was a game I was looking forward to and I really wanted to go out and put on a show,” said McHugh, who has rushed for 1,003 yards through six games.

“I’m just glad that we won and dominated as much as we hoped.”

Clarke (4-2) was the team that took command of the game early with a 14-play opening drive that ate more than eight minutes off the clock and was capped by a six-yard touchdown run from senior quarterback Nick Giardino. A twopoint conversion pass from Giardino to junior wide receiver Nick Iannucci made it 8-0 Clarke.

The Clark momentum didn’t last long, however, with John Raucci returning the ensuing kickoff 79-yards for a touchdown. McHugh gave Seaford the lead for good with a 63-yard run early in the second quarter followed by a two-point conversion run that made it 15-8.

The Rams’ offense bounced back with a drive into Seaford territory that stalled with the Vikings stuffed a 4th-and-1 run at the 37-yard line. McHugh answered with an 18-yard touchdown run for a 22-8 advantage at halftime.

“We were able to move the ball pretty well offensively I thought,” first-year Clarke head coach Kevin O’Hagan said.

“We had some long and sustained drives, but we didn’t cash in on all of them.”

Senior running back A.J. Barone kept Seaford’s momentum going with a 63-yard scoring run on the first play from scrimmage in the second half. After Clarke answered with a three-yard touchdown run by junior Jack Forte, McHugh answered with touchdown runs from 26 and 38 yards to put the game out of reach.

McHugh credits his offensive line for his standout senior season, which includes Eric Schiller, Joe Ulzheimer, Paul Schultz, Hunter Cole and Jack Kellner along with tight end Jack Murphy.

“They are my backbone,” said McHugh of his line. “They create the holes and I just run. They do the hard work and I just get the credit for it.”

Nicks challenges Murray for town clerk Kate Murray

In a municipality of more than 750,000 people, the Town of Hempstead’s clerk’s office relies on efficiency and transparency to provide various services to its patrons, which includes everything from parking permits to Freedom of Information Law requests.

Incumbent Town Clerk Kate Murray will face challenger and first-time candidate Olena Nicks.

In a Herald question-and-answer, both candidates provided remarks as to what can be done to improve the clerk’s office in order to best serve an increasingly large and diverse community.

Herald: How can the clerk’s office be further modernized?

Murray: I have been focused on present-

ing cost-effective and efficient operations in the town clerk’s office, launching a paperless [Long Island Rail Road] parking pass program. It’s reducing printing costs and conserving natural resources. I have also increased the number of online services in my office, making it more convenient for the public to do business with the clerk’s office. I served the public throughout the Covid pandemic and kept all services open during the pandemic. I initiated innovations such as curbside wedding licenses, Zoom wed-

Nicks: The clerk’s office can be modernized by creating a FOIL queue system that monitors when requests come in, deadline to answer and whether the request has been responded to. The office also needs an agenda and meeting management system such as board docs that digitizes board meetings and agendas. We need to remove the typewriters, move to scanning all records and having applications electronically.

Herald: Do you support outreach to nonEnglish speakers? How can the office be more inclusive?

Murray: I value all residents who come to my office and work to ensure that they

are served — no matter what language they speak. The staff in my office is multilingual. Every day we serve residents of many different nationalities, and we are able to assist them in their own language. Earlier this year I even performed a FaceTime wedding with a sign language interpreter. In addition, we have several applications, application instructions and signs in our office in Spanish, the most common non-English language spoken in my office. I have also advocated to have translation services included on the town’s new website.

Nicks: Currently the office can be intimi-

dating to those who are non-English speaking. Truly, it is intimidating to those who speak English. My plan is to ensure that we get around to each community and educate them on the services we offer. Instead of leaving our residents

in the dark, outreach is a number one priority. I want to make sure we have the staff who can support individuals whose English may not be their first language and ensure we have applications in multiple languages. The clerk’s office can also work with an online translation program that will allow a resident to select their desired language when viewing the Town website.

Herald: How would you improve the clerk’s office, aside from further modernization?

Murray: Providing tax relief is a key pri-

ority for me — assisting Supervisor [Donald] Clavin in crafting a tax freeze budget for 2021 and a tax cut budget for 2022. I am also controlling costs by implementing online and paperless services in the Clerk’s Office.

Nicks: I would look to streamline servic-

es as best as possible. Develop a 311 system for our residents who may prefer to speak with someone over the phone and are not as technologically savvy. We can improve the clerk’s office by hosting online meetings that review and explain services and resources when they come up. Ensuring we are at community events and communicating with residents will be the best way to service residents and improve their experience.

East Meadow Kiwanis members waltzed into the Westbury Manor’s cocktail room to celebrate the club’s 70th annual installation of officers and directors on Oct. 5. Over 100 people were there to celebrate.

Lieutenant Governor Liz Fries formally installed incoming President Jennifer Reinhardt and outgoing President Lisa Hallet presented Reinhardt with the gavel.

“This is going to be your best friend,” Hallet joked. Reinhardt was also presented with the club bell.

“I am beyond proud to stand with you all as friends, colleagues, family and most importantly as a Kiwanian,” Reinhardt said.” ...I am humbled and honored to uphold the traditions of this club and be recognized among so many wonderful leaders.”

Before Fries installed the new board members, spoke to outgoing board members. “I want to thank each and every one of you for your service to our club,” Fries said. “And to Kiwanis, you did a great job.”

Fries described the responsibilities of the board of directors and the officers, who will serve with President Jennifer Reinhardt. She told board members that they handle most of the business of the club, set direction, implement club policies, approve the club’s budget and other administrative tasks. Each incoming president picks board members and officers

that will serve with them.

Diane Krug was installed as presidentelect. She will serve as president for the term after Reinhard.

“Diane, you have been instructed to lead our club through the following year,” Fries said. “As you serve on the board this year, take advantage of the opportunities to learn about the president’s role, build relationships and plan for your year as president. Thank you for your leadership and dedication.”

This new installation comes after Hallett served for 18 months as president, with the typical term 12 months. She became president in March of 2020, after the previous president resigned without explanation.

“It has been my honor to represent the Kiwanis Club of East Meadow as your president for these past 18 months,” Hallett said. “Thanks to your efforts and complying with social distancing and Covid protocols we were able to continue the great works while exceeding our goals. We broke records in fundraising, we were able to continue to support the McVey Mighty Kind Market, send kids to camp, stuff backpacks and continue to feed local families in need.”

Hallett received a standing ovation after she spoke.

Not only was the night filled with good food, drinks and company, but awards were also given to honor Kiwanians and their efforts in the club. Peter Mancuso, a past president of the East Meadow club

and the president of Kiwanis International, received a home club banner. Kiwanis member Mike Litzner received the unsung hero award by Hallett for his efforts in the club. And Hallett received the President’s Plaque, presented by Reinhardt.

“This is for your dedication to those less fortunate, your service to the East Meadow community and your leadership and guidance,” Reinhardt said. “All of your work was greatly appreciated.”

The room erupted in cheers and applause when Super Distinguished Past Lieutenant Governor and the emcee for the night, Tom Gallagher, received the East Meadow Kiwanian of the Year

award.

“This is for your passion, unconditional commitment…” Hallett said. “You’re an important part of our community.”

To end the installation Mancuso gave a benediction before the crowd.

“We ask that you keep us ever mindful of the needs of those less fortunate,” Mancuso said. “..Let us all work together to lighten their burden and ease their loads.”

The East Meadow Kiwanis club never stops helping the community. In the coming weeks, they have a bocce fundraiser planned, a bird sanctuary cleanup and their annual fall food drive set for Nov. 13 and 14 in front of the ShopRite, at 1121 Jerusalem Ave. from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

By LAUREN LEV Although it’s another October in which we are often focused on everything orange – leaves, pumpkins, and Panera Autumn Squash soup, it’s also another October in which we need to remain focused on everything pink for Breast Cancer Awareness month.

According to the Susan G. Komen® Organization’s website it is estimated that among women in the United States in 2021 there will be: ■ 281,550 new cases of invasive breast cancer (This includes new cases of primary breast cancer, but not breast cancer recurrences.)

■ 49,290 new cases of ductal carcinoma in situ, a non-invasive breast cancer ■ 43,600 breast cancer deaths For men it is estimated: ■ 2,650 new cases of invasive breast cancer (This includes new cases of primary breast cancers, but not breast cancer recurrences.)

■ 530 breast cancer deaths And tragically, according to Breastcancer.org: color version ■ For women in the U.S., breast cancer

death rates are higher than those for any other cancer, besides lung cancer.

■ Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. In 2021, it’s estimated that about 30% of newly diagnosed cancers in women will be breast cancers.

Breast cancer became the most common cancer globally as of 2021, accounting for 12% of all new annual cancer cases worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

There is a great deal more information at these sites to decipher everything from the impact of age, geographic location, ethnicity and race on breast cancer – but the bottom line? Too many cases. Too many deaths.

And even if it’s repetitive, it bears repeating. Continue to conduct self-exams, get an annual mammography (if applicable), and provide charitable contribution to end this dreaded disease. We can either list all the names or honor those who have passed or those who are survivors by taking action. Though it has been especially challenging to encourage people to seek checkups and screenings during this pandemic, vigilance is key and there can’t be any excuses, even with Covid-19.

The East Meadow Fire Department extinguished a fire at an uninhabited house on Hull Street on Oct. 6. It was the department’s ninth serious fire this year.

One firefighter was hurt, sustaining lacerations on his finger. He first treated by Rescue Co. 5 and taken to Winthrop Hospital to receive further treatment and then released.

East Meadow’s Engine 1, 2, and Ladder 1, and 2, responded to the call of a fire on Hull Street at 2:38 a.m. As firefighters raced to put their gear on, additional information came in that the fire was serious.

Second Asst. Chief Philip Fertitta and 1st Asst. Chief Peter S. Cheswick, immediately left their homes to respond to the fire, followed by 3rd Asst. Chief James Walsh, and EMFD Chief Paul Kosiba.

Fertitta arrived on the scene first, at 2:40 a.m. Confirming that there was a “working fire,” he transmitted a Signal 10, which is when after an engine connects its hose to a hydrant two hose lines are used to fight a fire. Dispatch then upgraded the fire to a “general alarm,” and Engines 3, 4, and Rescue 5 left to help.

A pre-planned mutual aid response from neighboring departments was already in the works.

Minutes later, “first due” Engine 612 turned onto the street and the race was on to get water onto the fire. A short time after, Ladder 617 arrived and members immediately went to work checking for occupants. Finding none, they located the fire and moved in with Engine 2’s crew.

When firefighters entered through the

front door they were met with heavy smoke, but no visible fire. Then radio reports indicated that the fire was at the rear exterior of the home, extending from the ground level to the roof line. And it was moving into a second floor room and the attic.

Simultaneously, firefighters inside the house moved up the stairs while those outside worked to control the fire there.

Within 20 minutes, the fire was extinguished. Then firefighters continued their search to expose any hidden pockets of fire.

As the smoke cleared, it was evident that the firefighters had been successful in saving the house. But the fire did damage the rear exterior, portions of the second floor and the attic. All of the other rooms were spared from fire damage.

However, heat, smoke, and water damaged the rooms closest to where the fire had been.

Sixty-six East Meadow volunteers responded to the fire and another 25 members from neighboring departments assisted, either by covering the empty EMFD stations or at the scene acting as a rapid intervention team in the event that an EMFD firefighter became trapped.

The EMFD Ladies Auxiliary were at the scene to distribute energy fluids to exhausted firefighters. The Nassau County Police Dept. responded, as did PSEG and the Nassau County Fire Marshal.

Schumer endorses Curran for county executive

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer lent his support on Oct. 2 to Laura Curran, a Democrat, as she runs for re-election as Nassau County executive.

Schumer joined New York State Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs in supporting Curran during a news conference Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Jacobs introduced the two elected leader, calling Schumer a competent individual and Curran, of Baldwin, an authentic person.

“It’s my great pleasure to introduce our county executive, someone who has demonstrated courage, who is authentic.

The voters like her, the voters know her,” Jacobs said. “...We’ve got an important election coming up, and I have no greater confidence in anyone being able to win and win big as our great county executive and my friend, Laura Curran.”

Curran, who first became county executive in 2018 and was the first woman to hold that position, is running for her first re-election as county executive against Bruce Blakeman, who is a Town of Hempstead councilman representing the 3rd District, and who was the County Legislature’s presiding officer in the late 1990s.

“I do not take any support for granted, and I am especially grateful to have the support of Majority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer,” Curran said. “You have been an incredible partner to Nassau County for the last four years and before.”

Curran called Schumer’s office accessible and understanding of “the needs of our residents, of our families, of our working families and of our small businesses.”

“Senator Schumer has always delivered for our residents,” she continued.

“Right here behind us, you see the Boost Nassau Resource Center, and that is something that we were able to do because we’re using money from the federal government that Chuck Schumer got for us, and we’re pushing it out to our taxpayers,

we’re pushing it out in grants to our small businesses, we’re pushing it out to our non-profits that were not able to raise money…”

She noted how these funds also went to other areas of need such as helping the hungry and veterans get the mental health services they need.

“These funds, these resources put the money where it belongs, so I am incredibly grateful for your advocacy for us,” Curran said. “Not just for your advocacy but for understanding middle class concerns, working family concerns. Your endorsement for me today, again I do not take it for granted. I am very grateful for it, and I am looking forward to working together for the next four years.”

Schumer backed Curran when she first ran for the county executive position in 2017 after she had served as a county legislator in the 5th District “This is one endorsement that I didn’t have to wrestle over in any way,” Schumer said. “Not only do I endorse Laura Curran, but I do it enthusiastically, 100 percent, with no doubt whatsoever. She has done a great great job here, and you know her biography.”

Schumer spoke about how Curran is not originally from Nassau, but is instead from Canada, and how that has never stopped her from caring about the county.

“She came to Nassau County about 30 years ago and saw the wonder of this place and grew to love it and nurture it and grow with it and then serve it,” he said. “I am happy to do this.”

He credited Curran with using federal pandemic relief funding in the way it should have been allocated, making sure it went to small business owners, housing assistance programs, veteran mental health programs and schools.

“While my job is to get money for this county, you don’t feel good about it unless you know it’s going to be spent honestly, wisely and aimed at helping the working families,” he said. “That’s what Laura has done with the money.”

Election Day is Nov. 2.

Q. We leased a store that used to be a personal trainer and are putting in a retail space to sell health supplements and goods. We were told that we need a permit when we called to ask the building department, but as we are meeting our neighboring storeowners, they tell us they didn’t need permits, and that the stores are “grandfathered.” We’re only painting and not even changing the flooring, so I’m wondering, do we really need floor plans and a permit, and what is the permit for? needs a permit, although many shop owners are either told by landlords that it’s up to the tenant, even though the landlord is actually the responsible party, or both tenant and landlord just don’t get a permit. Because obtaining a building permit is often not a simple task, takes time and costs money, most people want to avoid it.

I remember the surprised reaction I got from a building department when I was working with a landlord with 20 tenants to make sure each occupancy was documented and up to code. The official told me he wished every landlord were so honest and concerned. I wondered why enforcement and cooperation aren’t consistent. Some get away with things for years without question, and others are strictly scrutinized.

There are basic reasons for getting a permit and regulations that created that need for good intentions. Safety for occupants, the community, emergency rescuers and the environment are one layer of why the requirement is in place, along with preventing traffic and parking congestion as well as public nuisances like noise and other types of pollution. Permits aren’t passed from one use or occupancy to another. A nail salon can’t just transition to a computer store. Believe it or not, if you open a restaurant that used to be a bar, and/or if the number of seats and layout is changed, the aisle width between seats and the number of restrooms must meet disability and plumbing codes. Different types of food and beverage sales must be safety regulated by building and health department review.

The key word is safety, and most people take it for granted, but it doesn’t just happen. The reason for having accurate plans is so there is documentation of what you plan to do, how and where equipment and fixed-in-place furnishings will be placed, and notes reflecting the law and building codes so that everyone involved — from designers to builders to the operators of the establishment and the landlord — is on the same page, no exceptions. Your landlord is the end-all responsible party, even if he or she leaves the permit process up to you. Don’t be misled by the false statement that it’s your responsibility. If anything, your landlord should be accommodating you with surveys of the property and information to get you through the process. ong Island recently lost its last Sears, that once ubiquitous powerhouse retailer that sold a range of goods, from sturdy jeans to solidly built power tools and refrigerators. Started in 1893 as a mail-order catalog to peddle watches to farmers, Sears built a favorable reputation through much of the 20th century as a mainstay of America’s burgeoning middle class.

By the time I was born in 1967, Sears was the world’s largest retailer, serving as an anchor tenant at malls across the land. Construction on Sears Tower in SCOTT Chicago — which became the world’s BRINTON tallest skyscraper, at 1,450 feet — began in 1969 and was completed four years later. Called Willis Tower these days, it’s now the world’s 12th tallest building.

Sears once boasted locations throughout Long Island, including in Valley Stream, New Hyde Park, Garden City and Hicksville.

The final holdout was at the Sunrise Mall in Massapequa, where about a third of the storefronts are vacant, Newsday recently reported.

My childhood is inextricably linked to Sears. Every year in August, my parents, both teachers, brought my brother and me to

Sears at the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove, in Suffolk County, to buy school clothes. I knew then that summer’s carefree days were fading, and classes would soon begin.

It was always a big deal to make the trip from our home in then rural Yaphank to the mall, which, growing up in farm country, seemed to me like the epitome of modernity. At Sears, clothes were always purchased first. Then my mom and dad would spend time in the tools section. They were also artists with a two-story stone studio behind our house, where they kept all their carving instruments, always bought from Sears.

After Sears, it was on to next-door Friendly’s for lunch or dinner. I ordered the same meal every time — the fried clams platter, followed by mint chocolate chip ice cream. Then we’d stop at the camping goods store to buy scouting equipment, the bookstore for art and children’s books, and the pet store for dog’s toys and treats.

We followed nearly the same routine every trip to the mall. It was a family outing.

More than that, it was a cultural experience shared by so many millions of middle-class Americans. To a kid growing up surrounded by forest and field, the mall — Sears in particular — represented the height of civilization.

It seems strange to write this all these

years later, as we watch the slow death of the once mighty Sears. At its peak in the early 1970s, the company employed 350,000 people.

When Kmart purchased Sears in 2004, Wall Street hedge fund manager Edward Lampert was appointed CEO of the new Sears Holdings Corporation. Over the next decade, the company’s revenue dropped precipitously, and 175,000 workers lost their jobs. Fewer than 50 Sears stores remain today.

Sears gave us a number of iconic American brands, including Kenmore Appliances, Craftsman Tools, Allstate Insurance and the Discover Card. From 1908 to 1940, Sears even sold kits enabling people to construct their own homes.

Today some 70,000 to 75,000 of these houses, most in the Northeast and Midwest, dot the land, according to a 2016 Popular Mechanics article. Kits started at $450.

Today many of these homes sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In so many ways, through so many decades, Sears was an innovator, a paragon of American capitalism that helped define the American landscape, even the American psyche. Sears was the go-to store for our everaspirational middle class.

What the heck happened?

Apparently, Walmart happened, then Amazon. Sam Walton founded Wal-Mart Stores in 1962 as a discount chain. By 1990 it had become the world’s largest retailer.

hat the heck happened to the legendary retailer? Walmart and Amazon.

Walmart has never been about the shopping experience, about shared cultural identity, the way Sears and other such retailers once were. It has always been about selling goods at the lowest prices. With middle-class wages starting to stagnate in the early 1970s, shopping was no longer a pleasure-seeking experience for many, but an existential crisis.

From 1973 to 2013, the typical American worker’s productivity rose 74.4 percent, but that same worker’s hourly compensation increased a paltry 9.2 percent, or a quarter percent per year — hardly enough to keep pace with inflation, which was out of control in the 1970s and early ’80s, peaking at 12 to 13 percent per year before starting to decline in the mid-1980s and averaging 2 to 3 percent per year since 1993.

If you’re wondering why Americans abandoned Sears and other mall mainstays in favor of Walmart and, later, Amazon, it can all be summed up in a single word — price. No doubt, Sears executives made their blunders. At some point, the retailer stopped innovating. The Sears that I first strolled through as a child was pretty much the same Sears that my wife and I shopped in for appliances when we bought our Merrick home in 2002.

Economic forces beyond the company’s control, though, were largely to blame.

Into the abyss, and discovering a new world

ome octopuses probably could score better than I did on an SAT. It’s hard to figure, though, since they can’t hold a pen or read the questions, but that’s just me being humancentric. Scientists have discovered that cephalopods, octopuses in particular, are super smart and seemingly capable of what we humans call feelings.

If you saw the Netflix documentary “My Octopus Friend,” you get it.

A diver forms a relationship with an octopus that swims to him whenever he scuba dives and RANDI actually cuddles her KREISS body against him. It is a powerful account of crossspecies attachment.

In one memorable study, hidden cameras in a marine lab caught an octopus climbing out of his tank at night to crawl into a neighboring tank where he could dine on starfish.

The big brains couldn’t figure out why the starfish were disappearing until they checked out the lab’s videotape.

Today is World Octopus Day, which coincided with me turning the last page on a love-

ly read, “The Brilliant Abyss,” by Helen Scales. (And yes, her last name is also a happy coincidence.) She studies life in the vast deep oceans around the world, focusing on creatures that live 3,000 to 7,000 feet below, in the freezing, murky darkness that has been a mystery up until recent years.

Her book and World Octopus Day remind us of yet another natural resource we are about to squander.

Scales mentions the deep-sea fish known as orange roughy, which has become quite popular in recent years. The real name of the fish is slimehead, which was a no-go. So the name was changed, and the fish, which live at extreme depths, are now being caught by the mega-tons with new technology. Scales agrees that orange roughy is delicious, but she points out that the fish live to some 200 years. They have thrived in the black world 5,000 feet below unharmed until now. The entree on your dinner plate could have hatched 50 years before the Civil War. According to Scales, the trawlers have nets and weights that crash into the underwater mountain ranges that are loaded with coral and destroy the outcroppings in the process. Some of those corals have been alive for millennia. She says that submersibles

have collected samples from the deepest parts of the oceans that reveal new life forms, even new bacteria, which may hold revolutionary cancer-fighting properties. We need to find out before it’s gone.

Swimming through the abyss are giant octopi, some growing to 20 feet across. They have been found as deep as 5,000 feet. At the same depths, whale carcasses have been found, covered in blankets of red, furry worms. The oddities and miraculous discoveries abound.

Naturally, human beings are about to sink the ship.

Scales talks about the emergence of underwater mining.

Technology has permitted mining for metals at ever-greater depths. Giant ocean-going machines have begun to dig up the bottom of our seabeds, disturbing animals and coral and minerals that have lain there for hundreds and perhaps thousands of years. Only now are environmental groups beginning to take action against these mining operations.

The first day that the first human dropped a line into the ocean was a bad day for marine wildlife. Nearly every species is under pressure from overfishing, even as fishing technology is improving, making it possible to kill tons of fish at a time. Giant

net fishing creates collateral damage for tons of innocent victims, the turtles and dolphins and other species that are caught up in the nets.

In the 1900s, humans killed more than twice the number of sperm whales that remain alive today. We used up what was within reach and now we are digging at increasing depths.

Swimming below, a mile under the surface, are creatures like zombie worms and vampire squid, nine-foot tube worms, phosphorescent jellyfish, and awesome red feather worms without guts of any kind that carry their own harem of dwarf males waiting to fertilize their eggs. Some of the deepsea gossamer jellies disintegrate as soon as they hit the air; they have only been seen through the tiny viewing windows of submersibles. These precious life forms swim among singular geological formations like hydrothermal vents in the bottom of the oceans.

We’ve gone a long way toward fouling up outer space with junk, and we are equally irresponsible in the trashing of our oceans.

One of the groups that are trying to preserve the seas around us is oceanconservancy.org.

The deep deep is still somewhat pristine, but the giant mining rigs are on their way.

Recalling Long Island’s Indigenous peoples

C

olumbus Day has been celebrated in the United States since 1971, when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed legislation proclaiming it a federal holiday. For years, the holiday has been controversial.

It is a source of pride for many ItalianAmericans who commemorate the global reach of Italy’s most celebrated explorer.

At the same time, for many others, particularly Native Americans, Columbus’s arrival in the New World in 1492 represents the beginning of centuries of enslavement and war.

On Oct. 8, President Biden became the first U.S. president to also proclaim Columbus Day, on Oct. 11 this year, Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which began in 1992 as a celebration of native cultures — and a counter-narrative to Columbus’s legendary exploits.

For years, American schoolchildren have been taught the Christopher Columbus poem, which begins:

They went on to enslave many others, and to force untold numbers of natives to convert to Christianity through extreme cruelty. The Columbus poem mentions none of this, leaving schoolchildren with only a partial image of the explorer.

Long Island was no different than the rest of what became the United States.

Native Americans had inhabited the Island for millennia, whaling and fishing for subsistence and sharing a common Algonquian language. Once there were 13 Algonquin tribes spread across the 118-mile-long island, according to the Matinecock Tribal Nation of Long Island.

LETTERS Remembering our fallen heroes To the Editor: On the 20th anniversary of troops first being deployed to Afghanistan on Oct. 7, 2001, the Nassau County Veterans Service Agency and local veterans gathered to break ground on a new war memorial to commemorate the members of the military who bravely served our country in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The new monument will be located at Veterans Memorial Park in Eisenhower Park, and will be the first on Long Island, and one of the first in New York state, dedicated to these wars, honoring the 7,000 service members who perished in those

and placed in indentured servitude, spending the rest of their lives enslaved.

By 1670, most area Native Americans were gone, according to Newsday’s history project, Long Island Our Story.

Today Native Americans remain here in small numbers, primarily concentrated on the Shinnecock Indian Nation reservation, in the Town of Southampton, and the Posspatuck reservation, in the Town of Brookhaven. The Posspatuck reservation has yet to receive federal recognition. The Shinnecock Nation didn’t receive that recognition until 2010, after a 32-year battle to obtain it. Federal recognition allows the nation to operate independently from state and local governments and to build a casino on its reservation. In February this year, it proposed doing just that.

About 600 Native Americans live on the 1,200-acre Shinnecock reservation, while another roughly 600 tribal members live off it, and 200 call the 55-acre Posspatuck reservation home. When the Dutch arrived here, there were several thousand Native Americans in the Island’s 13 tribes.

Before Europeans’ arrival on Long Island, Native Americans had inhabited it for 11,000 years — more than 550 generations — primarily living in peace. It was a largely unspoiled wilderness; the native peoples had long lived lightly on the land.

This is the history that has so rarely been taught in Long Island schools. The decimation of Indigenous peoples has so often been thought of in terms of westward expansion of the United States — the battles for lands across the Midwest and West. How easily we forget that Native Americans were exploited here as early as two centuries before territorial expansion under manifest destiny in the 19th century.

This, however, is the history that should be taught, so we might, as Long Islanders, understand why we must fully support the Native Americans who remain here today.

he race to the progressive left is under way in New York state, with word that New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams is forming an “exploratory committee” and may launch a Democratic primary challenge to Gov. Kathy Hochul.

In case you’ve lost track of his political pedigree, he is a founding member of the Progressive CoaliRONALD J. tion. One revealsnapshot of ROSENBERG ing his ideology dates from last year, when he told NY1 that he would seek to block the city’s budget because it didn’t go far enough to defund the New York City Police Department. As a progressive, Williams practices what he preaches.

His decision to run a primary against Hochul has enormous implications. It not only means he is making a move on

the governor’s mansion, but it also triggers a series of decisions and events that could crater New York’s future. Hochul will feel the need to move even further left, Attorney General Letitia James will now consider whether she will enter the primary contest, and moderate New Yorkers are going to look far more closely at what the Republican Party has to offer.

While James is keeping her own counsel regarding a primary move on Hochul, she has dropped hints at public speaking opportunities in Manhattan that she is seriously considering the race. More insightful, however, is her sudden uptick in appearances on Long Island, a voter-rich target, where she has recently been a keynoter at the Museum of American Armor in Old Bethpage and County Executive Laura Curran’s gunbuyback news conference.

If James were to become governor, even more New York City progressives would emerge in Albany’s version of musical chairs, as former gubernatorial primary candidate Zephyr Teachout has now signaled her intent to run for attor-

oters may end up looking far more closely at what Republicans have to offer.

Over the past two decades, 2.5 million men and women have volunteered to serve our great nation and protect our freedoms — many of whom did not make it home. All those Americans deserve our deepest gratitude and recognition for their service to our country, and with this memorial, we finally honor the next generation of Americans who have chosen to serve. Thank you to the Nassau County Council Veterans of Foreign Wars, Heroes Among Us and other organizations for partnering with the county to make this monument a reality.

The monument will honor those who served and those who perished in battle, but it will also be a tribute to the 30,000 post-9/11 veterans who have died by suicide. The Council Veterans of Foreign Wars will raise funds for the monument, design it and install it. A rendering of the monument was created by 23-year-old Maia Fernandez, of Franklin Square.

To put things in context, the Progressive Change Committee proclaims Teachout as “one of us” on its website, and back in 2018, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Teachout’s failed run for attorney general.

In a state where the population north of the Harlem River is relatively small and New York City teeters on de facto de Blasio socialism, no candidate can take Long Island’s massive voting bloc for granted, which could very well make the difference in whether Hochul, Williams or James is able to defeat the Republican gubernatorial candidate. For the moment, that GOP standard bearer is Long Island’s own Lee Zeldin. Yet much could happen to the current frontrunner between now and his party’s nominating convention.

His recent announcement that he is currently in remission from leukemia is a dramatic reminder that life can intrude on candidacies.

This much is clear: The state’s business community, which depends on a stable, safe and rational environment in

which to employ tens of millions of people, would develop the dry heaves if a progressive candidate were to become New York’s next governor. Progressives’ unequivocal anti-business manifesto, which ran Amazon’s proposed headquarters out of Queens, was a clear message to every CEO, entrepreneur and employer. It is no longer a question of Republican or Democrat. Williams’s potential decision to run for governor defines a very clear ideological abyss that will have moderates, and the business community as a whole, contemplating their future as New Yorkers.

One can hope that there is truth to the axiom that American politics has always been about pendulum swings, but with a statewide political party that made the closing of Rikers Island and defunding the police stated policy, it might be time for Long Island to consider that aspirational dream of becoming the 51st state.

Andrew Cuomo, hoping for a piece of the $2 billion initiative. Since Cuomo failed to deliver, will they now ask him for refunds from the $18 million campaign re-election fund that he no longer needs?

In our new Covid-19 world, the Port Authority, New York City Transit subway and bus, and Long Island and Metro North Rail Roads all have had to re-evaluate anticipated future ridership growth projections. Who has seen the updated anticipated ridership figures for the Air Train? Were there really going to be 9,000 daily riders? Is there an independent cost-benefit analysis to justify the cost of this project? Who would go to an LIRR Station, wait for a train, change at Jamaica, then Woodside for a Port Washington train to Mets Willets Point to reach the Air Train? Most would drive, take a car service, Uber or taxi, which would be faster and more convenient.
