No one saw the coronavirus pandemic coming.

No one expected it to last more than a handful of weeks. No one could have imagined the terrible death toll it would exact.

The past 17 months tested all of us beyond our limits. East Meadow, however, remains strong. The hamlet is full of fighters. Now we understand just how resilient we, as a community, are.

Just as we saw in Superstorm Sandy's wake Stuart in 2012, neighbors have been helping neighRichner bors throughout the Covid-19 crisis, delivering food and medical supplies to vulnerable residents, providing meals for the jobless and just checking in on one another.

Thankfully, as of this writing in early August, some 80 percent of Nassau County residents had received at least their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccines, and the infection rate had dropped to a little over 3 percent. Let us hope and pray it remains at or falls below that level so people remain safe, and we can continue our successful reopening of the economy. That will depend on all of us doing our parts — most importantly, scheduling a vaccination appointment if you have not already made one.

Throughout the crisis, the East Meadow Herald has provided invaluable news to the community, including information on institution closings, new safety protocols and, unfortunately, remembrances of lives lost. I want to thank our journalists for their commitment to the community. Our staff, categorized as essential workers by Governor Cuomo, have been out in the field regularly, even during the height of the pandemic, to ensure people who work and live in East Meadow had access to the best and most upto-date information.

Additionally, Richner Communications, the parent company of the East Meadow Herald, was proud to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in small business marketing grants to entrepreneurs across the South Shore, including many in the community.

Eleanor Roosevelt lived on the east side of present-day Salisbury Park Drive, near Valentine’s Road for four years, between ages 4 and 8.

East Meadow appeared in town records in 1658, during which it was designated as a place for cows to stay from April to October.

At the time, horse racing was popular, and Gov. Richard Nicholls began a race on the “Little Plains” near Hempstead Village, naming the area Salisbury after the English earl of Salisbury.

Most of the earliest farm families were descendents of English colonial settlers, some of whom crossed Long Island Sound from Connecticut to form Hempstead Town in 1643.

Farming was a way of life through the early decades of the 20th century, and local families worked the land alongside summer vacationers from Manhattan.

The East Meadow School District is among the oldest in New York state and has continuously educated students for more than 200 years. The district's earliest students were taught in a rural one-room schoolhouse on the northwest corner of Front Street and then Newbridge Avenue.

East Meadow is home to a number of historical figures and celebrities, including Matt Serra, former UFC Welterweight champion; Joy Mangano, the entrepreneur and inventor of the self-wringing Miracle Mop; and Eleanor Roosevelt, the former first lady of the United States, who spent part of her childhood in East Meadow.

School districts wait for direction from the state on opening

T

he Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced July 9 that schools should resume full-time, in-person instruction in the fall. According to the agency’s website, consistent and correct mask use by people who are not fully vaccinated is especially important indoors and in crowded settings, when physical distancing cannot be maintained.

It clarified that the recommended distance separation is three feet within classrooms.

At the end of July, the East Meadow School District had not decided definitively whether its schools would open in the fall and to what extent.

On July 28, Superintendent Kenneth Card posted a letter on the East Meadow School District website addressing the Covid-19 reopening. He wrote that East Meadow is waiting for guidance from the State Education Department, and until the district receives specific direction from the state, “we simply do not know what will be required of districts.”

Card said he sympathized with students and parents, adding that the situation is frustrating. He is aware, he said, that everyone wants to prepare for the start of the new school year. “I share in your frustration and eagerly await this guidance so we can effectively plan for September,” he wrote.

In his letter, Card also addressed the recent change that the CDC made July 27. The agency said vaccinated people, including children, should wear masks indoors, a reversal of its prior recommendation. The change stemmed from the new Delta variant, which is more contagious than

Covid-19.

The CDC has continued to recommend that everyone be vaccinated, saying that vaccination is the leading public health prevention strategy to end the coronavirus pandemic. Promoting vaccination can help schools safely return to inperson learning as well as extracurricular activities and sports, the agency said.

The CDC announced July 23 that children 12 and older should be vaccinated. On July 26, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced a partnership with Northwell Health to schedule student vaccination days, to be held at the Kennedy Park vaccination pod in Hempstead.

Curran said that to defeat this pandemic, as many people as possible need “to roll up their sleeves – especially young people.” One of her main priorities, Curran said, has been to keep schools open. Progress has been made, but the vaccine “is our pathway to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe and keep our county fully open,” she noted.

In July, Northwell Health President Michael Dowling shared his support that children 12 years and older receive the vaccine. School might be far from the minds of parents, teachers and children, he said, but school is only weeks away. Children need to vaccinated now to prepare for the 202122 year.

“Let’s stop any chance of a Covid-19 spreading in schools this September,” he said.

McVey students learn about different cultures and ‘kindeology’

I

t’s easy to find the “culture hallway” at McVey Elementary School. Just enter the building and turn right at Integrity Boulevard. Culture hallway begins at the framed picture of a heart, made of pieces of flags from different countries, because, McVey Principal Kerry Dunne says, “We all have the same heart inside, and we all have feelings and heart.”

Flags from 65 nations line the hallway at the East Meadow school. All are authentic, donations from families of McVey students. There is also a large bulletin board filled with “culture characters,” simple outlines of figures colored in by students, which represent what is important to them and their heritage.

Dunne said that it’s vital that children understand one another. She created the culture hallway last fall to teach students about one another, and especially their cultures and religions.

Her commitment, she said, is to character and “kindeology,” so children will know what it is to be kind versus what it is to be civilized.

A mother from Bangladesh thanked her, Dunne noted. The woman said her family now feels more a part of the community as a result of Dunne’s efforts.

Sana Fayyaz, a mother of three children, two of whom attend McVey, is from Pakistan. Her children were born in Saudi Arabia. When she

moved to the U.S. five years ago, she enrolled them in an Islamic school because, she said, she was frightened that her culture and religion would not be accepted in a public school. When she moved to East Meadow a year ago, however, she decided to enroll them in the East Meadow School District.

Dunne has made them feel welcome, and she appreciates Fayyaz’s culture, she said. Her daughter even said for the first time that she was unafraid to fast during Ramadan because she felt safe at McVey. Students at the school have learned about a different continent each month, and every day they explore a new country within it. The lesson begins first thing in the morning with the announcements, which involve more than the Pledge of Allegiance. Children listen to “Good Day McVey,” either in their classrooms or on YouTube if they’re learning from home. The students share culture characters, and Dunne reads what they have written about themselves, which include the country where their family is originally from, sometimes what they like to eat and their hobbies.

Her goal, Dunne said, is to teach children about geography and different cultures.

The children at McVey speak 26 different languages, and they are from 80 to 100 different nationalities. Once a month, children take part in Culture Day.

District to expand books with diverse characters, storylines

im Mendonis, the East Meadow School District’s director of social studies and 21st century learning, and Frank Lukasik, the director of literacy and funded programs, have

been on a mission to stress the importance of having more books with diverse characters and storylines available in classrooms and school libraries.

to illustrate a classroom where readers thrive — one that offers students access, time and choice to engage with various texts, like picture books, novels and graphic novels.

Having more time to read, more flexibility to choose books they want to read and access to books with diverse characters and storylines will create more enthusiastic readers in the East Meadow School District, the educators summed up.

The diverse characters represent different ethnicities, races, genders, sexual orientations and family structures. And the authors are diverse too.

Every year the district celebrates Black History Month in February. But it shouldn’t be an isolated event, because Black history is American history, and should be discussed all year long, he said.

To increase access to characters who look like and have lives similar to those of East Meadow students, Mendonis and Lukasik have been taking inventory of building and classroom libraries to see what is available and what is needed.

This is especially important considering that 50 percent of children’s books published in 2018 focus on white characters, according to a study by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Jodi Luce, an East Meadow Board of Education trustee, said she works in a diverse area, with many cultures, religions, countries and languages. When children see characters in books who look like them, live like them and speak like them, their eyes light up. Their interest level increases, as does their motivation to read, she said.

Dr. Scott Eckers, a Board of Education trustee, said the school district where he is employed is not particularly diverse, so having access to books with diverse characters and storylines is key to broadening students’ perspectives.

Lukasik sees the mission as an important work in progress. Books are a reflection of society, he said. Text selection should always be updated.

Public Library to open soon

T

he East Meadow Library, which has been under renovation since 2019, has not been open to the public. The renovation cost $14.6 million, and was secured in March of 2017 when the East Meadow School District and the library partnered to bring a joint resolution to East Meadow voters that asked for support for improvements and renovations for the school district and library facilities.

The bond vote took place on March 7 at the district’s elementary schools. It passed with 2,031 voting “yes” and 835 “no.”

Library Director Carol Probeyahn has overseen construction from the library’s perspective, but the renovation project had its own construction manager and architect.

The library closed for periods beginning on June 22, 2019, before fully closing in March 2020 because of the pandemic. During this time most, if not all library fees were waived, and residents could continue to request any materials that they wanted to pick up curbside at the Samanea New York Mall

in Westbury.

The new library will be much bigger with more natural light throughout the building. Other renovations include an enhanced theater and an outdoor reading courtyard for children.

The library’s closure caused impatience among some residents. Many said that they missed the in-person programs that the library used to offer and thought the renovations would be completed sooner.

In May 2021, the library budget for the 202122 year passed for $8 million. The biggest budget increase was for debt service, which was due to the renovation itself.

The East Meadow Library held a soft-opening on Aug. 9. No date was given at press time as to when the library would be in full operation and open to the public.

Take a stroll to Eisenhower Park’s lake

E

isenhower Park offers so much in the way of athletic opportunities, picnic areas and even miniature golf. One place that may be overlooked is the lake. The home to turtles and fish there are ducks that raise their chicks there. During the early morning when the sun is shining they can be found either swimming or feeding their chicks as turtles bask in the sun nearby.

Next time you visit Eisenhower Park leave a little time to relax by the lake. It won’t disappoint.

n the middle of Nassau County lies a hamlet, rich with diversity, parks, organizations and familyowned businesses. It thrives with the help of community leaders and key members who ensure that children, veterans and families’ needs and rights are met. According to the census, 38,000 people — 14 percent Hispanic or Latino, 12 percent Asian, 5 percent African-American, and 69 percent white — call the small, yet humble hamlet home: East Meadow.

Schools and library The East Meadow community has one public school district, comprised of two high schools, two middle schools and five elementary schools, which also take in students from Salisbury. The schools are East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools, Woodland and W.T. Clarke middle schools, and Barnum Woods, Bowling Green, McVey, Meadowbrook and Parkway elementary schools.

The elementary level sees students from kindergarten — the first full-kindergarten year started in 2015 — through fifth grade, and the middle schools take in sixth through eighth grade.

The district’s superintendent is in his third school year and Dr. Kenneth Card Jr. is also a Navy veteran and 15year administrator prior to his tenure at East Meadow.

The district appointed Card after a year-long search for a new leader.

The East Meadow PTA Council is a coalition of school PTAs that contributes to district-wide initiatives and hosts workshops through its ACCESS Committee.

East Meadow is also home to three parochial schools and eight nursery schools.

The East Meadow Public Library is renowned for its wide array of programs, services and vast book collection. After the community approved a historic, first-time school and library joint bond in March 2017, the library’s approved $14.6 million is slated for infrastructure upgrades, a new all-purpose room/ theater, and an outdoor reading garden to accommodate

Continued from previous page patrons. Each year, it hosts EMcon — perhaps its largest event — an anime festival that draws thousands from across Long Island. The library’s current director is Carol Probeyahn.

The East Meadow Fire Department headquarters is on East Meadow Avenue, and the department has roughly 260 volunteers. It is led by four commissioners, and has five fire stations, four engine companies, two ladder companies, one rescue company, a ladies’ auxiliary unit, a paramedic fly car program and a safety officers program. Its current chief is Philip Fertitta.

Parks and recreation Parks are a big part of the East Meadow community, and none is more recognizable than Eisenhower Park. At 930 acres, it is larger than New York City’s Central Park, and has dozens of athletic fields, 16 lighted tennis courts, a basketball court, three 18-hole golf courses, picnic areas and fitness trails.

Eisenhower Park is also the home of the Nassau County Aquatic Center, which has a

50-meter pool. Built in 1998, the swimming facility hosted the Goodwill Games, and now hosts other major swimming competitions. It is also open to the public. The Twin Rinks Ice Center opened to the public in the summer of 2014, adjacent to the Aquatic Center. It’s an 80,000-square-foot indoor facility with two indoor ice rinks, an outdoor rink and a sports recreational center.

Other parks in East Meadow include the Town of Hempsteadoperated Edward J. Speno Memorial Park on East Meadow Avenue, named after Edward Speno, who was the first president of the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce in 1954.

Veterans Memorial Park on Prospect Avenue, which the Town of Hempstead also runs, is the home of a public outdoor swimming pool. Adjacent to the pool, on East Meadow Avenue, sits East Meadow Town Square, designed and built by the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce.

Veterans Park is home to an 1,800-pound marble statue, a steel beam from the World Trade Center and a commemorative footstone listing the names of

East Meadow residents who died on Sept. 11, 2001. The memorial was installed by the East Meadow Kiwanis Club.

Community Groups The community boasts active and diverse community organizations, including the Council of East Meadow Community Organizations, the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club of East Meadow, the Pope Pius XII Knights of Columbus Council 4422, Knights of Pythias East Meadow Lodge 774 Alliance, and the Community Association of Stewart Avenue.

The groups organize the community’s largest annual events, including the Memorial Day parade, Community Pride Day, Culinary Delights and Christmas tree and menorah lightings in the winter.

Veterans groups include American Legion Post 1082, Jewish War Veterans Post 709, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2736.

Churches, synagogues and mosques of all different faiths can be found throughout East Meadow, and seniors find a home at the Salisbury/East Meadow Senior Center.

HISTORICAL TIMELINE •1644

The community of East Meadow was formed after members of the indigenous Massapequa, Merrick and Rockaway tribes sold the land to Englishmen John Carman and Robert Fordham.

•1665

Horse racing was popular, and Gov. Richard Nicholls began a race on the “Little Plains” near Hempstead Village, naming the area Salisbury after the English Earl of Salisbury.

•1812

A system of common schools was formed in Hempstead during the War of 1812, and from this division, East Meadow began a community with actual borders, known as District No. 3.

•1857

The Methodist Episcopal Church was established, making it the oldest house of worship in East Meadow.

•1888

Eleanor Roosevelt lived on the east side of present-day Salisbury Park Drive, near Valentine’s Road, for four years, between ages 4 and 8, on an estate called Halfway Nirvana.

•1917

Joseph J. Lannin, owner of the Garden City Hotel, Roosevelt Airfield, and the Boston Red Sox, developed four golf courses that made up the Salisbury Golf Club, now part of Eisenhower Park.

•1926

Golfer Walter Hagen won the Professional Golf Association Championship on Eisenhower Park’s Red Golf Course, then known as Salisbury Park.

•1658

The meadow to the east of the Hempstead Village was first referenced as East Meadow in town books when it became designated as a place for cows to graze from April to October.

•1775

East Meadow was occupied by British forces during the American Revolutionary War because of the amount of livestock herded there. It remained under British control until the end of the war.

•1814

The East Meadow School District was named “Bushy” or “Brushy Plains,” and the first school was established at Front Street and East Meadow Avenue.

•1869

A. T. Stewart, the “Merchant Prince” of New York City and one of the wealthiest people in the nation, purchased the common lands of the Great Hempstead Plains, which included a large portion of East Meadow.

•1898

Mrs. O.H.P. Belmont designed and built the Brookholt estate on what is now Mitchel Field and Mitchel Manor. While she was there, her son W.K. Vanderbilt Jr. launched the Vanderbilt Cup Races, a series of automobile races.

•1922

Borrelli’s Italian Restaurant opened in East Meadow.

•1963

The East Meadow Volunteer Firemen’s Association held its first meeting on Aug. 24.

The Hempstead Town Board purchased 12 acres of land to develop Veterans Memorial Park at Prospect and then-Newbridge avenues.

•1930

The Nassau County Board of Supervisors established the East Meadow Fire District.

The community dedicated a memorial at East Meadow High School to Ken Mushorn, a beloved teacher and coach from 1964 to 1999.

•1935

Entemann’s Bakery was established in East Meadow.

•1946

The “Meadowlarks,” the East Meadow Fire Department’s competitive team, took home the New York State Championship.

•1951

The population in the East Meadow School District was 25,000, which more than doubled six years later.

•1953

A group of residents came together to form the East Meadow Public Library, but the proposal was rejected when brought to a community vote. It was approved the following year.

•1961

The Nassau County jail was moved from Mineola to East Meadow.

•2004

Former President George W. Bush visited East Meadow for the groundbreaking of a new memorial at Eisenhower Park for the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

New East Meadow fire chief installed during Covid crisis

T

he East Meadow Fire Department installed a new chief in April 2021. Paul Kosiba is the 71st chief of the volunteer fire department, located on East Meadow Avenue. The Fire Department started 91 years ago.

Kosiba, 61, first started with the East Meadow Fire Department in 1993, assigned to Engine Company 4. Throughout the years, he rose through the ranks, becoming second lieutenant in 2004, and first lieutenant in 2005. He later went on to become captain of Engine 4 in 2006.

“I caught the firefighter bug when I was young and growing up, and over 40 years later,” Kosiba said. “I loved the opportunity to serve and create friendships and camraderie.”

He is no stranger to being a dedicated firefighter. Kosiba, who is originally from Old Bethpage, moved to East Meadow in 1993.

His first experience with a Fire Department was when at 16 years old when he joined the Plainview junior firefighters. From there, his career as a volunteer firefighter took off. Staying with the Plainview Fire Department for 15 years, he served as a fire company captain and rescue lieutenant.

“I’ve known him for 28 years; he’s got quite a record,” said John O’Brien, district supervisor of the Jericho Fire District and ex-chief of the East Meadow Fire Department. “He’s committed to getting the job done and providing a professional service to our communities.”

Becoming fire chief during the Covid-19 pandemic was no easy feat. The world might have halted, but fires did not.

“Everyone needs to be protected, and you don’t know what situation you’re walking into,” Kosiba said. “We haven’t changed. We still had to do our job, just a little bit more cautious.”

The chief is responsible for the Fire Department’s day-to-day operations, serving oneyear terms. After completing their terms as chiefs, they return to the firefighting ranks.

“He has a lot of qualities that make a good fire chief,” O’Brien said. “Knowledge is important, first and foremost, and using that knowledge at a fire scene to keep everything under control.”

Mount Sinai South Nassau continues to serve community, breaks new ground

By Mike Smollins When faced with an “unprecedented” situation in April 2020 as coronavirus numbers reached their peak, 383, the staff at Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital rose to the occasion and banded together to get through the difficult time. Now, staff is gearing up to continue the fight against the Delta variant.

While many lives were lost to the coronavirus, the hospital celebrated the release of hundreds of Covid-19 positive patients who were released with a clean bill of health. At a time when front-line workers were stretched thin, the Oceanside community and many others came together to show their support, donating food to the hospital’s staff daily throughout the pandemic.

With Covid-19 cases back on the rise and new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance announced on July 27, local hospitals are in full preparation mode. Dr. Adhi Sharma, chief medical officer at MSSN, recently discussed how people can protect themselves and their loved ones from the variant.

Sharma said that Mount Sinai has seen an increase over the last week in their Covid patient census. Where the hospital saw one to two cases a day in June, they saw eight between July 29 and 30.

Those new cases among patients have universally been seen in unvaccinated individuals.

“The challenge with Delta is that it is extremely transmissible,” Sharma said. “Even vaccinated individuals are getting Delta and we are seeing that in our staff.” Sharma added that most of the cases the hospital has seen has come from travel.

“We came out of the box, and we may have to go back in the box for a little bit,” he said. “That’s going to be challenging and I think we are going to see a lot of Covid cases as a result of that.”

Before, during and after the surge of the pandemic, MSSN was committed to delivering standardsetting, patient-centered health care. It is one of the region’s largest hospitals, with 455 beds, more than 900 physicians and 3,000 employees.

MSSN’s beautiful North Addition houses two 36bed medical surgical units, a 36-bed inpatient behavioral health unit and comprehensive maternity services center with 26 private postpartum rooms, spacious labor and delivery rooms and a neonatal intensive care unit.

The hospital’s Emergency Services department is one of the largest and most advanced on Nassau County’s South Shore. Designated a regional stroke center and Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons, the department houses 35 treatment rooms and specialty care, including a high-speed CT-scan and x-ray facility, pediatric emergency room and psychiatric emergency room.

MSSN is the only hospital on Nassau’s South Shore permitted to perform angioplasty in an emergency or an elective basis. In the event you or a loved one need angioplasty, it can be performed on the spot at the hospital’s Center for Cardiovascular Health, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

And services are expanding, as on June 22, MSSN celebrated the groundbreaking for its J-Wing on its Oceanside campus. The wing will serve as the cornerstone of hospital’s $400 million capital expansion to increase health-care services. Projected to open in 2023, the $130 million J-Wing will stand at four stories and 100,000 square feet.

The chairman of Mount Sinai’s board of directors, Joe Fennessy, said the board re-evaluated old plans for the facility, updating the infrastructure to match the evolving trends in health care. “We began to reimagine what this hospital should be, and we realized to best serve the needs of our community, we had to be something different,” he said.

Veterans Memorial Plaza to add a new monument

Veterans who served in Afghan and Iraq to be honored

E

isenhower Park’s Veterans Memorial Plaza in East Meadow remains a popular location in Nassau County to honor veterans, both those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and others who were able to return home. Established in 1947, two years after World War II ended, the plaza has grown, with monuments that recognize veterans from the Civil, Spanish-American, Korean and Vietnam wars.

Nassau County is home to 55,000 veterans, one of the largest veterans populations in New York state. Some 4,281 Nassau residents served in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to census data.

Twenty-one died.

There is one group of veterans that is not represented at Veterans Memorial Plaza — Afghanistan and Iraq veterans. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran has committed to addressing this oversight. She has formed a bipartisan advisory committee that is idesigning and raising $100,000 for a new monument to honor county Afghanistan and Iraq veterans.

Nassau officials said they hope to break ground on the memorial on Oct. 7, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the outbreak of war in Afghanistan.

Curran said it makes sense to do so because U.S. troops are now returning home from their service in Afghanistan. It’s important to show an appreciation for their service and sacrifice for our nation, she said, as residents do for veterans from other wars.

The county memorial committee has 12 members, five of whom Curran selected, and five

were chosen by the Nassau Council of Veterans of Foreign Wars, one by the Nassau County Legislature’s majority and one by the minority.

Chris Peterkin, commander of the Bellmore Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2770, is forming an additional committee of Afghanistan and Iraq veterans to work with the county’s committee.

The VFW spearheaded the memorial, he said, because an active Afghanistan/Iraq war veteran organization does not exist. He has urged volunteers to join, adding that they do not need to be VFW members.

Memorial Day parade goes on as scheduled in East Meadow

ast Meadow was ready for its annual Memorial Day parade before it even started. That was thanks to the efforts of members of the East Meadow Fire Department and the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, who spent hours installing flags on East Meadow Avenue.

Local veterans from the Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 2736, Jewish War Veterans No. 652 and American Legion No. 1082 were cheered on by the large crowd, which enthusiastically shared their appreciation for the veterans' service. The scouts marched as did members of the Kiwanis Club, Fire Department, Chamber of Commerce and other groups.

To remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, wreaths were laid at the memorial after the parade. Dolores Rome and Liz Fries worked hard to organize the parade which was a success.

East Meadow Kiwanis continues its mission to help children

T

he East Meadow Kiwanis was first chartered on April 29, 1952. The Kiwanis Club’s primary goal is community service, with an emphasis on helping children and families in need.

The East Meadow Kiwanis is just one small part of an international Kiwanis that seeks to change the world for children and communities in need.

Over the years, the East Meadow Kiwanis has sent 30 children each year to a week of sleepaway camp at Kamp Kiwanis, organized food drives and food basket collections, provided over $120,000 in scholarships and more.

Last year, Lisa Hallett, president of the East Meadow Kiwanis, and Vice President Jennifer Reinhardt had the challenge of continuing to give back to the community during a global pandemic.

Out of this, new ideas were born.

When schools closed in March 2020, Kiwanis raised funds to provide meals for students who were no longer receiving lunch. Hallett and Reinhardt shopped once a week and delivered meals to McVey and Parkway elementary schools, and W.T. Clarke High School. The pantry was started by McVey Principal Kerry Dunne and was dubbed the McVey Mighty Kind Market.

Instead of giving out their scholarships in

person, the club held car parades in vehicles that they decorated, and delivered the scholarships to the recipients’ homes.

When schools reopened, Reinhardt started a program called Pack a Backpack. Through this initiative, Kiwanians filled about 200 backpacks with school supplies and protective equipment for children in need. The second annual Pack a Backpack fundraiser collected the supplies and monetary donations through Aug. 17.

Now that things are opening up, the East Meadow Kiwanis Club has resumed its biweekly meetings at The Grand Stage Diner and Borrelli’s Italian Restaurant. New members are always welcome.

Coronavirus pandemic updates

It’s time to get out and about

E

ast Meadow is home to several parks and open spaces for residents and their families to relax, unwind and enjoy the outdoors, while staying safe during the coronavirus pandemic. Nassau County’s Eisenhower Park in East Meadow boasts 930 acres, and has opportunities for residents of all ages.

Children can enjoy three different playgrounds, and families can visit bocce courts and inlaid chess and checkers boards. For an hourly seasonal fee, residents can practice tennis at one of the 16 lighted courts, or enjoy one of the park’s 17 baseball fields, soccer fields or two football fields. Eisenhower also is home to the Northwell Health Ice Center, featuring two indoor and one outdoor hockey rinks.

County residents can purchase a leisure pass for a tri-annual fee of $36 for access to the Nassau County Aquatic Center at Eisenhower, an 80,000-square-foot facility equipped with a 50-by-68-meter pool that has hosted numerous competitions at which race records have been broken. It’s also a space for commmunity members to exercise or enjoy a leisurely swim.

The park has a two-mile fitness trail with 20 exercise stations. There are also three 18hole golf courses that have hosted the PGA championships, a driving range and two different mini-golf courses at a discounted rate with a leisure pass. To ensure social distancing, tee times are set to be booked by reservation only, and only every 16 minutes. No congregating is permitted.

The Leisure Pass along with a small fee also discounts and/or provides residents with access to Bay Park, Cantiague Park, Cedar Creek Park, Christopher Morley Park, Nickerson Beach Park, North Woodmere Park, Wantagh Park, Mitchel

Athletic Complex and Nassau County Rifle & Pistol Range. Discounts apply to seniors, veterans and disabled residents.

East Meadow boasts several other green spaces and parks that are reserved especially for Town of Hempstead residents. For instance, Speno Park has playgrounds, handball, shuffleboard, basketball and tennis courts. The park is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the summer.

Another hidden gem is Veterans Memorial Park and Pool. Guests must bring their own chairs, and no food is permitted. The pool is free to seniors with the Senior Summer Beach Program pass, which was mailed to residents over 60 in June and grants them free access to town pools and beaches.

Though parking is free, there is an $8 dollar entrance fee for East Meadow residents and $9 entrance fee for residents living outside East Meadow, though discounts apply to seniors, veterans, children ages 5 to 9, those with disabilities and volunteers.

Salisbury Court Ballfields in East Meadow also offer field use by permit only and are free to children and senior citizen leagues. Adult recreation leagues can use the field for an annual fee of $302.50.

All parks listed are encouraging visitors to wear a face covering, and stay six feet apart from others when possible.

Town & County Nassau County

Nassau County is governed by an elected Legislature, which is comprised of members from 19 districts. It includes an independent budget director who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters. Residents may submit petitions for proposed laws that legislators must consider. Legislators serve two-year terms.

The county executive — currently Democrat Laura Curran — serves a four-year term and is the chief administrator. Nassau also has an elected comptroller, currently Jack Schnirman; district attorney, Madeline Singas; and a county clerk, Maureen O’Connell.

Town of Hempstead

The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads.

Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Don Clavin — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a twoyear term, and the council members have four-year terms of office.

The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget.

Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
