Facebook devotees paint, hide and search for them

Four years ago this summer, East Meadow resident Amanda Skoros started the Facebook page Rock The Meadow. Open only to East Meadow residents, it now has almost 600 followers.

“When I started it, I figured my kids are young and it would give everyone in the town something to do,” said Skoros, 44. “I thought other kids would have fun with painting and hiding and finding the rocks. We didn’t think it would get this big.”

Skoros’s three children, Ryan, 18, Brianne, 16, and Kellen, 10, helped her paint the rocks and hide them. She said she posted the idea of the group on other East Meadow Facebook pages to get the word out.

“It was a rainy day and we had nothing to do, and my mom suggested that we start a rock group because she had seen it s o m e w h e r e e l s e, ” Ke l l e n recalled. “A lot of the little kids like to keep the rocks they find.”

Skoros, who has lived in East Meadow since 1981, said she thought the rock painting, hid-

ing and finding would just be a summer activity, but it has turned into a year-round community adventure. Participants find rocks around East Meadow, paint them any way they want, add the words “Rock The Meadow” and hide them. Then they post photos on the Facebook page, along with clues about where the rocks are hidden.

“People have told us that their favorite part about the group, besides painting, is the family time and quality time,” Skoros CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

Girl Scouts create mural at Salisbury field newsroom@liherald.com

In an effort to beautify the community, Girl Scout Troop 1120 painted a mural at Gabriel Vitale Memorial Field on Carman Avenue in Salisbury. With brightly painted drawings of athletes and inspirational quotes, the mural is providing motivation for all types of athletes.

“I feel very proud, like, happy to be known and give back to the community,” said Jolene Occhiogrosso, a Girl Scout who is in the fifth grade at Bowling Green Elementary School.

The mural is part of the girls’ efforts to earn their Bronze Award, the highest award for a Junior Girl Scout. Qualifying for this award is a two-year process that involves working on a “Take Action Project.” It requires that the project address a problem in the community and that what the girls work on will have a long lasting impact.

“It’s a big project, and we’ve only ever worked on smaller things that really weren’t the biggest,” Jolene said, “but people can see [the mural] and they know that we were a part of it, and [with this] we can help people in a bigger way.”

For their Take Action Project, the 15 girls from Troop 1120 decided to paint a mural on the snack stand at the field. The stand was previously a solid crimson, which Jolene described as “not the prettiest of colors.”

“A lot of people use the snack stand, and [the mural will] build confidence,” she explained, “so people know that they’re good enough to play and that they can win the game.”

Melanie Akerberg, the troops co-leader, said that discussions to paint the mural at the memorial field began a few years ago.

“I would say probably more than half of them play softball there so they’re very familiar with it,” Akerberg said. “I wouldn’t call it an eyesore, but it was just plain, it was just like a maroon colored building. They had always talked about it saying, ‘Oh, we should paint a mural.’”

To plan the project, troop leaders Margaret Occhiogrosso and Akerberg divided the girls into committees. While one committee wrote a letter to the Town of Hempstead to receive permission to paint the mural, another committee researched and reached out to mural artists, which Jolene said helped her to learn a few skills, including talking on the phone.

Following this research, the troop decided to commission artist Tina Travers to help design and paint the mural.

Travers said she was impressed by the girls’ determination and dedication.

“I really wanted to do something for the community, and I used to be a Girl Scout myself when I was a kid,” Travers said. “I absolutely loved the fact that these Girl Scouts wanted to do something so beautiful for the community.”

The troop met with Travers over Google Meet to brainstorm images and quotes for the mural. Using their ideas, Travers created sketches, which she then presented to the girls during the meetings.

The troop then closely watched Travers sketch out the mural and joined in again during the painting process.

The scouts worked on the mural over the course of four weekends. Even though

they were disappointed by rain that prevented them from painting on the second weekend, the scouts generally arrived excited to work each day, Akerberg said.

“I thought it was gonna take much longer than it really did and we just banged it out so fast because of their motivation and their determination,” Travers said, “and it just made the whole process so much nicer and quicker.”

The girls added the final details on May 21 and signed their names, which Jolene said was her favorite part of the project.

“I hope people actually look at it and feel confident and that when people recognize my name they’re happy to know that I was a part of it,” she said.

Akerberg said the scouts were surprised by how long it took to get approval from the town. They had submitted the letter before the holidays in 2020. Travers said the girls were nervous during the wait because it was taking so long. They understood that approval from government takes time and that Covid-19 could cause delays, but they had expected to begin painting in early April. They were relieved when they received approval from the town in April. The girls began painting on May 7.

The pandemic also presented other roadblocks for the troop. One challenge was that they had to meet virtually to plan the project.

“I hope that they learned that even though we can’t always be together we could still work together,” Akerberg said, “and how the power of one is so important, but the power of a team is like 100 fold.”

Jolene said the experience taught her that “working together will get a lot more done than doing it yourself.”

The troop held a dedication ceremony on June 6 to honor the hard work of the town, Akerberg said. At the ceremony, some of the girls read prepared speeches about the mural.

“We just wanted to dedicate it to our town and to our peers that use that field all the time and buy snacks from the stand,” Akerberg said, “and to the parents who take so much of their time to bring their kids to the sports that teach them such a great lesson of commitment.”

“While no amount of money will ever compensate for the thousands who lost their lives or became addicted to opioids across our state or provide solace to the countless families torn apart by this crisis, these funds will be used to prevent any future devastation,” she said.

Opioid deaths on Long Island increased by 77 percent from 2013 to 2017, from 358 to 617, according to the New York-based Fiscal Policy Institute, a nonprofit research and education organization. A 2019 FPI report stated that New York state had 1,681 deaths caused by opioids in 2013. By 2017, that number had grown to 3,224 — a 92 percent increase in only four years.

The lawsuit originally listed smaller pharmacies, like CVS, Rite Aid, Walmart and Walgreens. Before the trial’s opening arguments, however, those smaller distributors had settled.

In 2019, Purdue Pharma filed for bankruptcy. The cases against Purdue, Mallinckrodt, and Rochester Drug Cooperative are now moving separately though U.S. Bankruptcy Court, according to a press release from the attorney general’s office.

“For far too long, opioid manufacturers have flooded communities with powerful and addictive narcotics with impunity, and the lethal addiction crisis that it spawned continues to devastate families in Nassau County and across the nation,” County Legislator Josh Lafazan said. “That is why it’s so fitting for Nassau County to use these funds to deliv-

er life-saving treatment and recovery resources to all who seek them. I strongly support any effort that will maximize the benefits derived from these funds.”

State Sen. Kevin Thomas said, “Drug manufacturers and distributors continuously chose to put profits over human lives, creating and prolonging this public health crisis,” Thomas said. “After years of struggle and anguish, we are finally seeing the first signs of real accountability for the pharmaceutical industry’s role in the crisis.”

“Nassau County is paying a painful price to heal the damage caused by the opioid epidemic,” County Executive Laura Curran said in a news release. “We must ensure that any settlement money is used to support mental health and addiction programs in an effort to help residents and families who have been affected by substance abuse.”

While there is still work that needs to be done, Thomas said the settlement would “save countless lives across the nation, and deliver crucial funding to strengthen opioid prevention, treatment and education efforts across New York.”

American Legion Post 1082 is committed to continuing to be there for veterans.

They installed their leaders for the next year on June 22.

Pete Wenninger, 50, who joined the post two years ago, will continue to lead the post as the commander. An American Legion member for 20 years, he didn’t belong to a specific post until he joined Post 1082 in 2018.

Originally from East Meadow, he served in the Navy for six years after graduating from East Meadow High School in 1978.

American Legion was formed in France after World War I to foster a community for American soldiers stationed there.

Wenninger said he believes the organization continues to serve as a means of connecting veterans.

He has added three members to the post during his term as commander and hopes more veterans will join. The only requirement to become a member is to have been honorably discharged.

“The post is the perfect place to talk to other warriors who have gone through hell and are trying to find purpose and living day-to-day,” Wenninger said. “It’s a great place to feel comfortable, relax and feel accepted. We all have each other’s backs.”

There are roughly 80 active members in Post 1082, who live in Salisbury and East Meadow. Those who join enjoy comrader-

There are also 150 Sons of American Legion members, the sons and grandsons of honorably discharged veterans. And Post 1082 also has a strong women’s auxiliary.

It’s easy to spot a veteran, Wenninger said. “Veterans always stand tall with their chest out and shoulders back with purpose, even if it’s to get groceries,” he said.

Wenninger said he continues to be committed to updating its 120-year-old building on Bellmore Road. The post acquired it in

1935.

In the past year a few renovations have improved conditions. A new roof, siding and windows were installed, courtesy of a generous donor. Another local person provided the labor and needed supplies.

But there are other repairs and renovations that need to be done. “We no longer have a leaky roof but still have a sagging second floor,” Wenninger said. “We need some help. County Executive Laura Curran said there would be funding available for non-profits but we have not heard about when they will be available. And no one has answered my calls there.”

The bathrooms need overhauled, Wenninger added, to handicap accessible compliant. The kitchen also needs renovated, as does the cannon outside in front of the post.

“LIPA did the trimming of the tree lines to keep us safer,” he said. “But we also need to expand the parking lot.”

A GoFundMe set up a few years ago was unsuccessful. Wenninger is hoping to utilize a different fundraising device: a 50/50 raffle. The winning tickets would be pulled on Veterans Day. The raffle could fund the much needed parking lot, he said.

For now, some money is being made.

People are renting the hall for graduations and christenings, which was not possible during the coronavirus pandemic.

The post is holding a membership drive. Wenninger hopes that potential new members will attend a meeting which is held on the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. except in July and August. Due to Labor Day, the next meeting will be on the second Tuesday in September.

Wenninger will continue to start each meeting and service by saying, “If we didn’t have vets, we wouldn’t have this country. If we didn’t have vets, we wouldn’t have these freedoms. Thank a vet today and every day.”

40 YEARS AGO, Long Island lost one of our neighbors who, Newsday called, “one of the most important Long Islanders of the 20th Century”.

Through his music, stories, live performances and social activism, HARRY CHAPIN was credited with influencing the song, “We Are the World.” Some have stated that Harry Chapin also inspired USA for Africa and Live Aid. We also know that he founded two organizations, WHY Hunger and Long Island Cares, Inc., along with the 1977 Presidential Commission on Hunger under former President Jimmy Carter.

On July 16, 1981 while thousands of his fans gathered in Eisenhower Park in East Meadow for one of his many free concerts to raise awareness of hunger, Harry Chapin died in an automobile accident on the Long Island Expressway. Forty years later, Harry Chapin’s legacy continues through the work of our organization.

For forty years, Harry’s fans continue to contribute to our work in many ways. His words about ending hunger still resonate with our staff, volunteers, donors and fellow musicians like Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel,Dee Snyder and Darryl ‘Run DMC’ McDaniels who have all supported Long Island Cares, Inc.-The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank.

EMFD offers tips for safe barbequing Each year the East Meadow Fire Department chiefs, officers, and members respond to barbeque emergencies in resident’s backyards. Already this year, several Long Island Fire Departments, have responded to serious fires as a result of a barbeque mishap.

With today’s backyards having huge wood or plastic decks, and/or vinyl siding that fuels a fire as if it were gasoline, an unattended grill can result in a raging fire throughout a home. In many cases, fire rapidly climbs the siding easily getting in the soffits of a home’s roofline putting a fire department to the ultimate challenge of extension into the attic. If such fires go undetected for any prolonged period of time, firefighters will arrive to a large body of fire advancing fast to consume a neighbor’s property, or worse.

There is much to know about a barbeque. The following is information can help during any emergency.

Always remember, any emergency at the barbeque is a true emergency, particularly if propane or natural gas is involved.

If there is an emergency, shut off the fuel (gas) if you can do it safely. If not, or if the barbeque is on fire, or leaking, evacuate the area. Call the EMFD directly at (516) 542-0576. Give all the details to the fire dispatcher. Is it a gas leak? Is it a fire? Is it close to a home or any other structure? All this information dictates how our volunteers approach the scene. The EMFD is well trained to handle these emergencies.

Remember: A 20 pound propane gas tank (most common) is a safe, economical, and environmentally friendly way to cook outdoors, however, a barbeque left unattended, or carelessly maintained can cause an emergency.

In a leaking or active fire state, firefighters will calculate their approach based on the circumstances of a leak such as: ■ How long the leak has been going on.

■ If there is a fire.

■ How long the fire has been burning.

■ How much is in the tank.

■ Whether the tank itself has been subject to extreme heat.

■ Whether or not the tank is steel or the newer composite type more susceptible to heat extremes.

Some firefighters will refer to a 20 pound cylinder as a bomb, for the devastation it could cause unless the situation is quickly mitigated. Here is the information you should be aware of to prevent a barbeque mishap.

About gas

If you use the most common gas for barbecuing you have a 20 pound round propane tank under the barbecue.

The most important characteristics of propane gas are that its colorless, odorless and is heavier than air. During manufacturing, an odorant resembling the smell of rotten eggs is added to the gas, thus allowing detection of its presence with the human nose.

Call the EMFD, evacuate the property, and prepare to give all details to firefighters as they arrive. Chiefs and firefighters will make their approach to such an emergency knowing that low-lying areas and/or open cellar windows could become paths for the heavier gas to collect and form an explosive environment. Rare as it may be, such an explosive range of gas to air mixture could ignite a major explosion just from the spark of a basement oil burner or light switch. All must be checked by the East Meadow volunteers.

Those with natural gas service to supply the barbecue should be aware that the most critical difference for residents and volunteers alike is that natural gas is lighter than air. Less likely will it seek a low-lying area, however in large vapor quantity with little wind, a cloud of this invisible gas may form.

With a leak, the potential for an explosion can exist if the gas vapor is allowed to escape for any significant period of time, whether it’s propane gas (heavier), or natural gas (lighter).

A fire, on the other hand, presents a different risk to firefighters. The release of burning gas for any period of time can fatigue valve components or the tank itself.

Such damage can result in an explosion regularly known to firefighters as a BLEVE (boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion). Call the EMFD, evacuate the property and prepare to give all details to chiefs and firefighters as they arrive. Do not put the fire out. This will only allow escaping gas to accumulate into an equally dangerous situation.

The Fire Department is ready to mitigate these emergencies as well. The focus will immediately be placed on cooling down the tank with water yet, carefully maintaining the active fire. Once cooled, firefighters will approach the tank and attempt to shut down the valve, hence ending the fire danger. More complicated issues may require the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s HazMat unit to assist.

Before barbequing ■ Check the grill thoroughly for leaks, cracking, or brittleness before using it.

■ Check the tubes leading to the burner regularly for blockages. Check the specific grill manufacturer’s instructions.

■ Make sure the grill is at least 10 feet away from a house, garage or trees.

■ Keep children away from fires and grills. It is a good idea to establish a safety zone around the grill and instruct children to remain outside the zone. A chalk line works great for this purpose.

■ Have a fire extinguisher, a garden hose attached to a water supply, or at least 16-quarts of water close by in case of a fire.

■ Before getting a propane cylinder filled, check for any damages to it.

■ Never transport or store propane cylinders in the trunk of an automobile.

During barbecuing ■ Don’t wear loose clothing that might catch fire.

■ Use long-handled barbecue tools and/or flame-resistant mitts.

■ Never use any flammable liquid other than a barbecue starter fluid to start or freshen a fire.

■ Never pour or squirt starter fluid onto an open flame.

The flame can easily flashback along the fluid’s path to the container in your hands.

■ Keep alcoholic beverages away from the grill. They can be flammable.

■ Never leave the grill unattended.

■ Store and use the grill on a large flat surface that cannot burn (i.e.- concrete or asphalt).

■ When lighting a propane barbecue, make sure all the

■■ Always shut off the propane fuel at the grill and at the bottle after you have finished barbecuing. Otherwise, this will lead to fire hazards, such as leaks and faulty regulators.

admiration for schoolteachers when it comes to the patience they must have in dealing with all the different personalities they must reach and try to shape into responsible members of our communities. Not only do people learn differently, they also communicate differently, and choose what to communicate based on varyonte eeper ing degrees of what’s in it for them. I sometimes wonder if it was a good thing that my parents instilled that “honesty is the best policy” because of the number of people who didn’t want to hear the truth, tell the truth or communicate the truth.

Many have stated to me in their daily business dealings that what they don’t know won’t hurt them, but eventually it actually can hurt them. I started writing this column after all the times I witnessed people who were being misled or out-andout “burned” as consumers. Sadly, the truth hurts, and I’ve also often tried to warn people that they probably won’t get away with things they thought they could sneak by officials. Some people are trusting, but many are willing to take their chances, and they move on to work with others willing to happily misguide them.

As I have done many times in my career, I drive by projects where I told the owners they wouldn’t get all that they wanted, and as expected, the built project is missing the building parts that never would have passed. One client, for example, insisted they owned the waterway behind their home and could build over it. The section of the home that would have protruded out over the waterway was never built when the rest of the home was constructed. It was no surprise, just a disappointment, because they didn’t want to hear the truth, and whoever did the planning led them down a garden path to a dead end. When this happened, I wonder if they had a lot of aggravation, or simply accepted the truth and moved on.

Now you will need to select someone you can trust to warn you of pitfalls, verify by calling code officials, and possibly do things in phases that may cost more than doing it all together. Good luck!

ntil recently, I had never thought deeply how radical my parents were when I was a child. I’m not sure they realized it at the time.

In 1972, when I was 5, they put me on a big yellow school bus whose primary route wound through Gordon Heights, in Suffolk County, a nearly all-Black neighborhood that was developed

by Louis Fife in the 1920s. I was one of a handful of white children on the route. Two years later, my younger brother joined me on the bus.

Growing up in the tiny country SCOTT hamlet of Yaphank, a nearly BRINTON all-white community, I had no notion of the frighteningly seismic socio-political events that were breaking out across the country at the time, including an anti-desegregation movement that swept the nation, roiling cities from Boston to Los Angeles and too many points in between, including the Village of Malverne.

“This place was a virtual war zone in the late 1960s and early ’70s, where you had people standing in picket lines ready to kill each other over issues of integration,” then Malverne Schools Superintendent James Hunderfund told the Herald in 2019.

“There was a sense of separatism, and

I

that was prevalent in other places, but it was rampant here.”

In Boston alone, 40 anti-desegregation riots and protests broke out between 1974, the year I turned 7, and 1988, when I was a junior and senior in college. Much of the sound and fury was stirred by a group called Restore Our Alienated Rights, or ROAR, led by its chair, Louise Day Hicks, who claimed she was defending white neighborhoods by pushing back against court-ordered desegregation school busing plans.

Yet my parents put me on that bus, appearing unworried, as if there were nothing out of the ordinary in this seemingly simple act of parenthood. All these years later, I’m happy and proud they did. It is why, in large part, I grew up to be an antiracist, one who works to eliminate racism in American society through words and actions.

I came to this realization when I recently read Ibram X. Kendi’s immeasurably hopeful book, “How to Be an Antiracist” (One World, 2019). In this compact 238-page text, which is one part instruction manual on how to live a life free of racial prejudice and one part personal remembrance and reflection, Kendi, 38, a journalist and university professor, dissects, point by point, the many and varied forms of bigotry while laying out his vision for a socially

just society in which all people, regardless of skin color, can achieve equality and happiness.

“If we ignore the odds and fight to create an antiracist world, then we give humanity a chance to one day survive, a chance to live in communion, a chance to be forever free,” Kendi writes.

It isn’t surprising that my parents put me on that bus.

My father, the son of Christian missionaries, grew up in Africa, in the Congo. One of only a handful of white children in his village — the others were his siblings — he spoke Lunda, a Bantu language, before English. He was steeped in African art and culture and mysticism.

As an adult, he was a music teacher and visual artist, and African sounds and design concepts played a central role in his work throughout his life. He spoke of Africa only in the fondest terms, regaling family and friends with often humorous stories of life in the jungle.

My maternal grandfather was a drycleaner who set up shop in a Black neighborhood in Bellport, also in Suffolk, and I spent many afternoons behind his counter, playing hide-and-seek with my brother between the clothes racks. Grandpa, whose parents emigrated from Italy, greeted customers as though they were old friends, no matter their color.

reserves some of his best writing for the chapters describing his childhood. You can see and feel the streets he describes with a certain melodic beat, like a rap.

“We certainly weren’t imitating anything on the Ave — to the contrary,” he writes. “The wider culture was avidly imitating and appropriating from us; our music and fashion and language were transforming the so-called mainstream . . .

Fresh baggy jeans sagging down. Fresh button-down shirts or designer sweatshirts in the winter under our bubble coats. Fresh T’s or sports jerseys in the summer above our baggy jean shorts. Dangling chains shining like our smiles. Piercings and tattoos and bold colors told the mainstream world just how little we wanted to imitate them.”

In this beautiful book, we see a Black child come of age in a nation that is perpetually seeking to define him, cordon him off, suppress him, but we also see this child grow into a man who overcomes the odds, and who confronts not only the racism that is pervasive throughout our society, but within him — yes, he admits, a Black person can be a racist.

Only by confronting racism in all its forms can we find peace. “How to Be an Antiracist” does just that.

Searching the heavens for common ground

just booked a reservation to see the next full solar eclipse. Call me an optimist; I expect to be there. Save the date: April 8, 2024. You can see it in all its glorious totality from Mazatlán, Mexico, along a narrow diagonal path that enters the United States near San Antonio and moves across the country to Maine and Canada.

I am embarrassed to say I missed the last big eclipse, in 2017, because I couldn’t find anyone who wanted to go to Nashville with me, where the viewing was expected to be RANDI superb. I mean, KREISS how shortsighted was that? I am in awe of astronomical phenomena, and that was possibly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

I didn’t go, even though I had a hotel booked. Failure of what? Energy? Determination? I did see a sliver of the eclipse from my home in Woodmere, along with my mail carrier, who was stopped in his tracks, looking skyward through a sun filter. Very meh experience, eclipse-wise.

The world has turned since then. When the pandemic began and we were all shut down and shut inside for long periods of time, I started looking upward and outward for comfort and inspiration. I set up my Celestron telescope and learned how to use it properly. One dark night, I saw the surface of the full moon, with craters and geographical features I hadn’t seen before. Last Dec. 21, I saw the convergence of Jupiter and Saturn and could distinguish the rings of Jupiter in the telescope.

As the pandemic wore on and wore me down, I found a real freedom in the night sky, observing the constellations we all know. I watched the International Space Station fly by. I downloaded the NASA website so I could try to spot other space objects floating around overhead. One app visualized my own night sky at any given moment, based on my location as communicated through my phone.

This may sound elementary to those well schooled in astronomy, but across the span of my educational experience, astronomy remains a black hole. I have a passion and interest to learn what I can, but I feel

frustrated by how difficult the discipline is.

I’m a word person, and astronomy is all about math and physics and chemistry.

Still, I’m determined to learn what is within my reach. Speaking of black holes, I’ve read the simplest descriptions of the phenomenon over and over, and yet I don’t get it, or the concept of an expanding universe, or gravitational waves, or dying stars.

So I let that go. I absorb what I can. I look at the night sky and know for certain that we are an infinitesimally small piece of the universe, and that other worlds and other beings are possible. I know that our daily gripes and strife and political conflicts are nothing in the cosmos. Whatever our thinking, our alliances and our behaviors, we have in common this minuscule life raft called Earth, and we don’t have it for long. Contemplating the galaxies that stretch for millions of light years in all directions makes me think we can do better with this transitory gift of life.

End of lecture. I am comforted by gazing upward, and I wish the same for you.

It was much more fun than Stephen Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time,” which was pretty much a black hole to me, not that I can visualize “a region of spacetime where gravity is so strong that nothing — [not even] light, can escape from it.” (Wikipedia) Levesque has traveled to every far-flung spot on earth to book “observation time” on the most advanced telescopes in the world, which are always perched on remote, dark-sky mountaintops. She shares her adventures at the observatories in Chile, where the lively tarantulas almost took the fun out of the moment. She talks about the freezing cold at the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii, and the time a colleague thought he had discovered a new planet that turned out to be energy coming from a nearby microwave where someone was heating soup. She evokes the gorgeousness of the heavens and the privilege of being among those who roam the stars.

Read the book. It’s a great escape into a world most of us don’t know.

We’re in the thick of summer — safety first!

ummer should be a time of joy, spent hanging out at the beach and barbecuing in the backyard.

Too often, however, summer turns tragic when it needn’t. The American Red Cross offers the following guidelines to help you stay safe as the temperature climbs.

During a heat wave

The American Red Cross first aid app offers emergency-response information in simple, easy-to-follow steps. Available for iPhone and Android devices, the free app gives you instant access to the information you need to handle the most common first aid emergencies. It also features videos, interactive quizzes and straightforward advice.

■ Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.

Learn to swim

■ Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.

■ Avoid extreme temperature changes.

■ Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, lightcolored clothing. Avoid dark colors, because they absorb the sun’s rays.

■ Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day, usually in the afternoon, between 2 and 5 p.m.

Know what to do in an emergency

■ Check on family, friends and neighbors who don’t have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.

■ Check on your pets often to ensure that they aren’t suffering in the heat.

LETTERS Yes, Audubon needs a name change To the Editor: Re Scott Brinton’s column “Audubon Society confronts its racist namesake — sort of ” (July 1-7): I salute Brinton for his thorough analysis and ounce of bravery coming through in the Herald’s opinion pages. I think that his suggestion to change the name of the Audubon Society is proportionate, timely and overdue.

I have a feeling that he will face a great deal of opposition, name-calling and resentment from political bodies and individuals, but I am with him all the way.

The best way to safely enjoy the water is to learn how to swim. Enroll your family in age-appropriate Red Cross water-orientation and learn-to-swim courses. Basic water safety rules are part of these classes. You’ll learn how to tell if a swimmer is in distress or drowning, and how and when to call for emergency help. You’ll also learn how to help someone in trouble in the water while keeping yourself safe.

Water safety tips

A Red Cross water safety poll released in 2013 showed that nearly half of Americans said they had had an experience in which they were afraid they might drown, yet more than half planned to engage in activities that would put them at risk of drowning over the summer.

Members of the Aquatic Sub-Council, part of the Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council, have developed the Circle of Drowning Prevention and Chain of Drowning Survival protocols to raise

awareness of the most important steps swimmers can take to reduce the number of preventable drownings.

The Circle of Drowning Prevention shows the layers of protection that can help prevent potential drownings: ■ Pay close and constant attention to children you are supervising in or near water.

■ Fence in pools and spas with adequate barriers, including four-sided fencing.

■ Learn swimming and water-survival skills.

■ Make sure children, inexperienced swimmers and boaters wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets, and always swim in areas watched by lifeguards.

The Chain of Drowning Survival illustrates the steps you should take when you spot someone in distress in the water: ■ Recognize the signs of a struggling swimmer, and shout for help.

■ Rescue and remove the person from the water without putting yourself in danger.

■ Call emergency medical services.

■ Begin rescue breathing or cardiopulmonary resuscitation if necessary, and use an automated external defibrillator, or AED, if available.

■ Transfer care to advanced life support if needed.

une was National Homeownership Month. For many, homeownership is a part of the American dream that is proving to be increasingly difficult to attain. Long Island home prices have hit historic highs for the second year in a row, reinforcing a 2019 report from New York state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli that found that nearly 40 percent of Long Island homeowners could not afford their homes.

Homeownership should not be a luxury few can afford.

Long Island’s NICOLE JEAN skyrocketing prices and a CHRISTIAN home longstanding history of redlining and housing discrimination make homeownership even more challenging for Black people and other people of color. This nature of division was a deliberate choice, and is built into the foundation of Long Island. In 2019, Newsday’s “Long Island Divided” explored the stark segregation and injustices on the Island, noting that 90 percent of Black residents live in just 62 of its 291 communities.

Long Island’s racist past did not happen in a vacuum. The state and federal governments had an equal role in instituting racist housing policies. The Federal Housing Administration was a significant player in ensuring that Black Americans stayed out of white suburbs. Communities across the country were developed with the help of the FHA on the condition

that homes would not be sold to AfricanAmericans. Levittown was one of these communities, and it remains nearly allwhite today. Strategic segregation across Long Island set a precedent for the housing bubbles that we see today.

Affordable housing on Long Island is often segregated in its own “community” or “development,” becoming a cluster lacking the integration or diversity that is the strength of any suburban community. There is also a stigma attached to the term “affordable housing,” which have been code words to refer to people of non-white descent or of lesser economic means.

Yet another difficulty of homeownership on Long Island is a lack of standardized funding from New York state that would ensure affordability. The affordable housing resources that do exist are parceled out in a nonstructured way to local municipalities and some wellknown nonprofits, both of which operate using a business model that favors “profit” or “project completion” over sustained affordability that diversifies communities.

Not only is homeownership on Long Island prohibitively expensive, but communities of color are often not afforded the same resources that are allocated to predominantly white, affluent communities. Ideally, all Americans would have equitable access to affordable homes, good education systems and other resources that allow communities to thrive. It is obscene that this is not the standard or even the norm in the U.S., let alone here

In a proclamation during National Homeownership Month, President Biden said the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development would “advance affordable and sustainable homeownership” throughout the country and break the deep-rooted barriers that have prevented so many people of color in the U.S. from becoming homeowners. These barriers, alongside the economic hardships created by the coronavirus pandemic, are keeping many from the opportunity of homeownership.

The Uniondale Community Land Trust is working hard to provide this resource in its community.

Instead of creating a separate neighborhood of affordable housing, in Uniondale the goal is to integrate affordable housing within the existing neighborhood.

U-CLT is working diligently to build a project pipeline to provide homeownership opportunities for families making 60 to 80 percent of the area median income. As of 2020, the AMI in Nassau County was $126,600. The goal is to help provide fair, equitable housing here.

Having access to stable, quality, affordable housing helps people become part of diverse communities, find and keep jobs, lead healthier lives, and take better care of their children. There is no question that opportunities to own homes make a serious positive impact in people’s lives.

Creating sustainable, affordable housing is an excellent way to ensure that all can become homeowners in their lifetimes.

Homeownership does not need to be unattainable. Current homeowners should be able to afford their homes. Providing people and communities with the resources they need to flourish must be a priority everywhere.

LETTERS Kreiss’s column in the Herald, and enjoyed none more than “Five-day tour of the Big Apple’s thrills and chills” (July 1-7), about her trip to Manhattan with her daughter and grandchild. I totally relate, having recently ventured back into Manhattan, most recently visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MOMA. I hope Randi caught the Alice Neel exhibit at the Met. I was unfamiliar with Neel, but wow, what a creative and gifted artist — from her earlier work of Communist party leaders, to motherhood, to people of color, to the architecture of her beloved Harlem and so much more. And, of course, all the wonderful art at MOMA. Sadly, somehow we missed Van Gogh and Calder, but will definitely go back sometime soon. But I have tickets to immersive Van Gogh, which I’m really looking forward to.

Living in Long Beach — and really, anyplace on the Island — it can at times seem, if you let it, like a chore to go into Manhattan, but once there, I quickly realize everything I love and have missed

about the city. There’s nothing quite like that energy, and it feels so great to see it coming back. I just love walking around, taking in the sights and sounds. The streets seem to be as busy as ever. And once theater reopens, I believe Manhattan will be back 100 percent.

Thanks to Randi for her oh-so-relatable columns, putting into words much of what I’ve felt, thought and experienced during Covid.
