It’s been over 400 days since Sandy Lachman has seen her son in person. Andrea Nordquist’s son is closer to home, but she expects a phone call to come within the next year, without warning, letting her know he will be deployed oversees for the fourth time. That was the case for Lisa Ryan, whose son was just deployed to South Korea. The
last time she heard from him was by way of a text: “Ma, I need hot sauce. The food at the base sucks.” She laughed as she recalled it. The three women, members of Military Blue Star Mothers of Nassau County, recently organized a food and supplies drive for troops in South Korea. On Feb. 10, they filled 94 boxes at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3211 in Hicksville. Ryan, of Hicksville, started the effort after she heard from
a colonel serving in South Korea, whom she declined to name for security reasons, whose troop lacked food and supplies. “I reached out to [Nordquist] and, within days, we had enough to pack a ton of boxes, and we still have more coming in,” Ryan said, adding that she had help from local veterans’ nonprofits Rolling Thunder and Heroes Among Us, which donated a total of Continued on page 3
