Girl Scouts in East Meadow aren’t letting the coronavirus pandemic take a bite out of their most popular annual fundraiser, selling cookies. To ensure social distancing, the scouts aren’t permitted to set up booths and sell outside stores. And, of course, many of the girls’ parents are working from home and can’t sell cookies in their offices, said Jeannie Cardali, the leader of East Meadow troops

1218 and 1316. “Unfortunately, sales have been hurting in the pandemic,” she acknowledged, adding, however, that the girls are still generating interest on social media and selling on an online platform called Digital Cookie. Each girl has her own profile where she can sell and keep track of purchases. Holly Vardakis, 8, and her sister Sophie, 5, of troops 1218 and 1119, respectively, have been making videos to promote their cookie sales and sharing them on the Face-

book page of their mother, Allison. The sisters sold 100 boxes each, 40 of which Allison bought herself. “I figured we’ll sell them eventually,” she said. “Or donate the rest. Or gain more quarantine weight and eat the rest.” This is Sophie’s first year selling cookies and, her mother said, she’s just excited to be part of the process.
