Michael Dowling is one of healthcare’s most influential voices, taking a stand on societal issues, such as gun violence and immigration, that many health system CEOs shy away from. As president and CEO of Northwell Health, he leads a clinical, academic, and research enterprise with a workforce of more than 78,000 and annual revenue of $15 billion.

He has received numerous awards, including the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and a number of honorary degrees from Fordham University, University College Dublin (Ireland), and the prestigious Queen’s University Belfast. In 2020, he received the Deming Cup from the Columbia School of Business and was ranked second on Modern Healthcare’s 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare. In 2017, he served as the Grand Marshal of the Patrick’s Day Parade in NYC and he chairs the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.

Prior to joining Northwell in 1995, Dowling served in New York State government for 12 years, including leadership roles as director of health, education and human services, commissioner of social services, deputy secretary, and a chief adviser to former Governor Mario Cuomo. Earlier, he was a professor of social policy and an assistant dean of Fordham’s Graduate School of Social Services.

Dr. Anthony Boutin serves as the president, CEO, and CMO for NuHealth. In his role, Dr. Boutin is responsible for leading and overseeing the NuHealth centers of care which include Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility, and a network of Family Health Centers that bring primary and specialty care into the communities we serve.

Dr. Boutin has over 30 years of healthcare leadership experience. He is a Fellow in the American College of Emergency Physicians, board certified in emergency medicine, and has extensive clinical experience as a staff physician in emergency medicine. In addition to providing and supporting resident and student teaching activities, he holds academic positions as assistant clinical professor at Mount Sinai Medical School and the State University of New York at Downstate Medical School.

Dr. Boutin is also a faculty member of the Emergency Medicine Oral Board Review at Northwell Long Island Jewish Medical Center and is actively involved in research with multiple published articles in emergency medicine and trauma.

In 2007, Dr. Boutin joined NUMC as the chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine. Under his leadership, the department moved to a new stateof-the-art ED with well-trained, experienced staff and NUMC has received the annual AHA/ASA Gold Plus designation for stroke care for the past 10 years. As an administrator, Dr. Boutin has headed multiple productive healthcare committees.

In addition, he successfully instituted significant operational improvements and launched an emergency medicine residency program in 2015. In 2019, he advanced to the role of chief medical officer and in 2020 became the president and chief executive officer.

With Dr. Boutin’s leadership as president, chief executive officer, and chief medical officer, Nassau Health Care Corporation is on the way to becoming the premier center for trauma patients, the very ill, and those needing help and care.

Q&A What is the state of health care, especially on Long Island in the wake of COVID-19.

I think we’re in a pretty good place, right now. We’re going to have COVID with us for a while, but not to the extent it was two years ago. The number of people that we have right now in our hospitals is around 260 COVID patients, which has gone up a little bit in the last couple of weeks. Because there is an increasing COVID situation out in the community. However, most people are not that sick. It’s, in many ways, like having the flu, but you can handle it. Remember, this is a worldwide phenomenon, it just doesn’t disappear immediately. But we are in a pretty good position. I think it’s all manageable and people just have to stay calm, be unreasonable.

Take some precautions when going about your life the way you normally would. But I don’t see our hospitalization jumping up to anything like where they were before. And that’s what I primarily focus on, is the hospitalizations numbers. Most people in the community will in all likelihood get COVID at one time or another, but not be terribly negatively affected by it. It will be like having the flu. We’ve got to go about our lives, do the best we possibly can, be careful, but also be optimistic, and continue our lives the way we wish to do so.

What does the future look like? What opportunities are ahead? What can we expect?

I think that we will be maximizing technology to greatly enhance access. In the home, out in the community, I think it opens up a whole new set of doors of opportunity for us, the front door to healthcare in the future, in many ways will be digital. I think it’s going to open up a whole new world, the whole consumer movement is going to take hold much bigger in healthcare — healthcare is going to be driven in the future, by the needs and the desires of the consumer. And we, the providers, if we don’t respond to the desires of the consumer, we’re not going to be as relevant as we need to be.

Now, that is not going to take away from the fact that there are going to be hospitals that will be taking care of very, very sick people. Health is a lot more than the delivery of medical care. Help is about what you eat, how you exercise, where you live, what you drink, what your lifestyle is about. And so we on the provider side have a responsibility to improve your health.

If we can manage the two initiatives together, I think that we can have a very bright future indeed. But we all have a responsibility here is how we maximize and optimize the various risk responsibilities that each of us have about promoting health.

Q&A How has COVID created challenges in 2021? How did you overcome it?

In 2021, we continued to implement our screening and testing procedures for staff, patients, and visitors at hospital and at long-term care facilities to comply with NYS DOH guidelines.

Operational management of COVID positive/negative/incidental positive patients was a challenge during 2021. We developed plans on cohorting of patients, criteria on opening/ closing of our COVID units, and infection control measures. In addition, the new strains of COVID surges were increasingly more contagious than the original COVID strain, causing severe staffing shortages in healthcare. The COVID vaccine also became widely available in 2021. We developed a COVID Vaccine Center to vaccinate and offer boosters to employees, patients, and the community.

What advice do you have for future medical personnel, especially after the past few years?

You need to enjoy your work in order to maintain the degree of commitment necessary to be a physician; and remember to take care of yourself in mind, body, and soul so you can take care of others. Be a selfless, giving person in order to withstand the needs of our patients and a lifelong learner and practice evidence-based medicine. Keep up with changing medical problems, new diseases, and new treatments. Support your colleagues, your staff, your patients, and the patient’s families; and show mutual support amongst all caregivers so that you can give your patients the standard of care they deserve. Remember to thank and acknowledge your family and friends for their support. They are who enable us to do what we do. And most importantly, never lose focus on why you are here — to serve out patients with compassion.

ST. FRANCIS HOSPITAL & HEART CENTER CATHOLIC HEALTH Charles L. Lucore, M.D., M.B.A. has been the president of St. Francis Hospital and Heart Center® in Roslyn, New York since 2018. Dr. Lucore, a graduate of Colgate University received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine.

After an Internal Medicine Residency at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, he completed a fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, Missouri. As a faculty member at the University’s School of Medicine, his research lab focused on the role of fibrinolysis in vascular remodeling. He received his MBA from Olin School of Business, becoming executive director of the Prairie Heart Institute and subsequently president and chief executive officer of HSHS St. John’s Hospital, the flagship hospital of the Hospital Sisters Health System prior to joining Catholic Health.

Carol Gomes is a member of the senior executive team serving as the chief executive officer and chief operating officer at Stony Brook University Hospital. Formerly, she was the chief quality officer and associate director for quality management with administrative oversight for the departments of Continuous Quality Improvement, Decision Support Services, Clinical Pathways, and Management Engineering. She was also the associate director for neurosciences.

She earned two master’s degrees from Stony Brook University in Management and Policy from the Harriman School for Management and Policy and Healthcare Management and Administration from the School of Allied Health Professions. She served on the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Program’s Board of Examiners for nearly 10 years as a senior examiner and alumni examiner. She holds certifications as a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, certified practitioner of healthcare from the National Association for Healthcare Quality, and numerous certifications in laboratory sciences and management from the American Society for Clinical Pathology. She also teaches for the School of Health Technology and Management at Stony Brook University.

She is the recipient of numerous leadership awards including the Long Island Business News Healthcare Heroes Award in Achievements in Healthcare, the Master Award and the Excellence in Management Award from the American Society of Clinical Pathology, and The Distinguished Alumna Award from Stony Brook University. In 2018, she was the recipient for the Award of Distinction by the Healthcare Leaders of New York through the American College of Healthcare Executives, and in 2021, was awarded the Stony Brook Council Medal of Excellence for outstanding service. She served on the Stony Brook University Alumni Association Board, holding all of the executive level positions including president. She is a board member on numerous boards associated with healthcare activities including the Greater New York Hospital Association and Hospital Association of New York State.

Dr. Joseph Greco is senior vice president and chief of hospital operations at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, part of NYU Langone Health. He oversees the strategic direction and daily operations of the hospital as well as directing the delivery of excellence in clinical care and patient safety. Dr. Greco assumed the hospital’s leadership in 2019 and skillfully guided it through the COVID pandemic, one of the most challenging periods in the hospital’s 125-year history. He brings to bear nearly 30 years of clinical experience to hospital leadership, having previously served as the hospital’s chief medical officer. Under Dr. Greco’s stewardship, NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island introduced an advanced heart failure program, offering patients the latest clinical advances including heart-assist devices, and access to a transplant program with the fastest transplant rates in the state. The hospital also achieved designation as a Comprehensive Stroke Center — the highest-level certification — among other noteworthy achievements.

Prior to Dr. Greco’s tenure as chief medical officer, he served as the hospital’s chairman of anesthesiology for more than a decade, and he is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. His experience also includes serving as the hospital’s chief patient safety officer and as such, was a driving force in bringing quality and patient safety initiatives to the hospital long before they became standards in the medical community. In addition, he chaired key hospital committees, including the Quality Improvement/Advisory Committee and the Operating Room Committee.

A resident of Garden City, Dr. Greco earned his medical degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. His postgraduate training included an internship in internal medicine and a residency in anesthesiology at Mount Sinai, where he served as chief resident for anesthesiology. He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesia, the New York Society of Anesthesiologists, and the American Society of Professionals in Patient Safety.

Q&A What changes in the medical field, or in overall health, have you seen since Covid?

The wave of the future will be hospital care in the home for acute patients. [note: didn’t use “hospital at home”]. Patients will receive care in the comfort of their own homes, including physician and nursing visits, and radiology and lab work as necessary, among other services.

This hospital-quality home care won’t be for every patient — such as those needing intensive care or frequent daily interventions — but it can be appropriate for patients such as those needing IVs or long-term antibiotics, among other medical issues. By taking the bricks and mortar out of the care-equation, we expect to: improve patient satisfaction by patients remaining in the comfort of their homes; achieve as good or better medical outcomes; and reduce medical costs. We expect to launch these services in September 2022.

What advice do you have for future medical personnel, especially after the past few years?

Medicine is a rapidly changing field, and an exciting one that is incorporating the latest in technologies and innovations. It’s a field that attracts people who have a passion for serving a greater good — patients. My advice to those people is simple: follow your passion. Some may say the road is too long or too hard, but there’s a reason we have staff working at our hospital for 30 or 40 years — because the rewards of serving that greater good are beyond measure. So follow your passion.

Kenneth Roberts came to Mather Hospital in 1982 and was named president in 1986. He led the growth of the community hospital into one of the most respected and highly ranked hospitals on Long Island. Under his leadership, there were multiple hospital building and clinical program expansions, including the emergency department,inpatient and ambulatory surgery center, medical arts building, intensive care unit, adolescent behavioral health unit, a single bedded 35-bed patient care unit, and the addition of cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology services.

During his tenure, Mather was accredited and re-accredited as a Magnet® hospital for quality patient care and nursing excellence; a teaching hospital with a growing Graduate Medical Education Residency program of more than 100 residents and fellows; and earned multiple top ‘A’ grades for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group.

When changes in the healthcare industry made the hospital’s independent status increasingly untenable, he headed the search for a healthcare partner that led to the affiliation with Northwell Health. When patient satisfaction scores were not what he thought they should be, he undertook a cultural transformation program – the Mather Hospital Voyage to Excellence – that engaged employees and resulted in dramatically improved scores.

Whether sitting down with employees in the cafeteria or stopping them in the hallways to chat, he has a very personal management style that encouraged employees to think of themselves as a family. His leadership and vision also has encourags the hospital to its largest, most transformational building project, a 38,000-square-foot addition that will include a new 26,000-square-foot Emergency Department and expanded surgical center.

Dr. Adhi Sharma, an experienced Emergency Medicine physician-leader, was selected last year by the hospital’s board of directors to assume the role of president of Mount Sinai South Nassau, the flagship Long Island hospital of the Mount Sinai Health System.

Dr. Sharma was previously executive vice president of clinical and professional services and chief medical officer. The hospital serves more than 900,000 residents along the South Shore and is a regional medical center known for stroke, cardiac, trauma, and cancer care.

During the pandemic, Dr. Sharma helped guide the hospital’s response to the highly contagious and potentially deadly disease. The hospital treated more than 9,700 patients while constantly working to ensure staff safety. Dr. Sharma also w as among a key group of clinical leaders who kept the community informed by briefing the media directly.

A member of the American College of Emergency Medicine and American College of Medical Toxicology, serving on the practice and education committees respectively, Dr. Sharma launched his career in medicine at Elmhurst Hospital Center, where he was the director of the Division of Toxicology and an attending physician in the emergency department from 2001-2005.

Dr. Sharma is a graduate of New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York, and completed his residency in emergency medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Jacobi/Montefiore Medical Centers. He also completed a fellowship in medical toxicology at NYU/Bellevue. He is board certified in both emergency medicine and medical toxicology. Dr. Sharma also holds a master’s degree in healthcare administration from George Washington University in Washington D.C.

Q&A COVID over?

All of the experts tell us that Covid is not over yet. The various variants that are evolving through mutation will continue to infect many members of the population, whether they were vaccinated and boosted or not. Our ability to produce vaccines that are effective to a large percentage against the variance will take time, and even then, as we know, there are a large number of members of the population that will refuse to be vaccinated. Covid will be with us for a while.

What inspired you to be in the field and position that you’re in?

I was a math major and an economics major and therefore had a leaning towards administration rather than clinical work, but I was inspired to become a hospital administrator by the many friends and relatives that I have that became clinicians in the healthcare field.

What changes in the medical field, or in overall health, have you seen since Covid?

The changes in the healthcare field from the point of view of a hospital administrator include a much greater expense to treat our patients, ranging from 15% to 20%. Supply chain issues for obtaining supplies and pharmaceuticals have become increasingly problematic, and many hospital employed individuals have left and there is a shortage of employees, which through the laws of supply and demand, naturally increases the salary and benefit expense to hire and retain replacement employees. Hospitals traditionally have been operating on very thin financial margins, and the Covid pandemic has made financing the delivery of healthcare much more problematic.

Q&A Is COVID over?

COVID will never really be over. It will shift from a pandemic to an endemic, and cases in vaccinated or previously infected “healthy” people will likely be mild. An endemic version of COVID-19 could look similar to the flu.

How has COVID created challenges in 2021? How did you overcome it?

The pandemic has opened the door for hospitals and healthcare providers to change the way we deliver care due to the challenges we faced during the pandemic. Telemedicine is one good example. Telemedicine is now available across the spectrum of our organization, including our physician practices and community-based specialty care centers. It has substantially increased patients’ access to physician specialists; eliminated the scheduling of time-consuming physician office visits for routine check-ups and prescription renewals; and allowed for remote access of results for diagnostic tests, including lab work and radiology. Insurance carriers have also been partners in the growth of telemedicine, which they now pay at the same rate as a traditional patient visit.

The pandemic also showed everyone that we need to maintain hospital capacity and depth of services, so we are able to expand when needed. The trend previously had been to reduce hospital capacity across the country in an effort to contain costs. We support efficiency in health care, but the pandemic proved that we also must be ready when the need arises. You simply can’t build hospital and staff capacity overnight.

What changes in the medical field, or in overall health, have you seen since COVID? The pandemic has taken a toll on everyone. Giving our employees the room, support and flexibility they need to adjust to the new post-pandemic reality is crucial. We all need to place an emphasis at this time on employee well-being to make sure everyone has what they need to return to work. We are very aware in health care of the long-term impact of the pandemic on our workforce. For many, it’s been traumatic. We will continue to make that a priority.

GERARD M. WALSH Chief Executive Officer

EPISCOPAL HEALTH SERVICES, Inc. Gerard M. Walsh joined Episcopal Health Services Inc. (EHS) as chief executive o2fficer in late 2015. Gerard has nearly 40 years of healthcare leadership experience, a depth of expertise in organizational change, physician development, implementation of quality and patient safety programs, mergers, acquisitions, and a strong knowledge of community hospitals.

Upon joining the health system, Gerard set forth on establishing a multi-year strategic plan which entailed working with community stakeholders to determine the expansion of necessary medical services. Under his leadership, EHS has expanded St. John’s Epsicopal Hospital’s emergency department, upgraded equipment to state of the art, conducted necessary facility renovations, and is currently in the process of completing construction for a full service teaching facility for its medical residents in partnership with Ross University.

As he drives growth, EHS now operates the Rockaway’s first ever Oncology Center in partnership with New York Cancer and Blood Specialists, a new state of the art Women’s Comprehensive Health Center, and continues to expand access to care through St. John’s Medical Group, the system’s outpatient physician practices which provide primary and specialty care across the Peninsula.

Before joining EHS, Gerard was the chief executive officer of Western Maryland Hospital Center in Hagerstown, Maryland, where he built a new leadership team and implemented several clinical services for the chronic care population. Prior to leading Western Maryland Hospital Center, he spent 15 years as senior vice president and chief operating officer of Shore Regional Health, a threehospital health system affiliated with the University of Maryland Medical System. He was charged to lead the regionalization plan for the Mid Shore, which integrated Chester River Health System into Shore Health System to form a new company — Shore Regional Health.

Gerard was born and raised in Queens, New York, and has a Bachelor of Science in health care administration from St. John’s University, and a Master Degree in health systems management from Iona College.

Dr. Bruce Stillman is President and Chief Executive Officer of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL). A native of Australia, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree with first class honors at The University of Sydney and a Ph.D. at the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the Australian National University. He moved to CSHL 1979 and has been at the Laboratory ever since, being promoted to the faculty in 1981.

He was the director of the CSHL Cancer Center from 19922016. In 1994, he succeeded Nobel laureate James D. Watson as director of CSHL and was appointed President in 2003.

Dr. Stillman’s research focuses on the mechanism and regulation of duplication of DNA and chromatin in cells, a process that ensures accurate inheritance of genetic information from one cell generation to the next. He has received many honors, including the Order of Australian (AO) in 1999 for his medical research. He was elected to The Royal Society (UK), the National Academy of Sciences, the Australian Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Stillman received a number of awards and prizes, including the Alfred P. Sloan Prize, the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize from Columbia University, the Herbert Tabor Research Award from The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the prestigious Canada Gairdner International Award, the Heineken Prize for Biochemistry and Biophysics from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Australia Advance Global Impact Award. He is an advisor to multiple universities, foundations, corporations and government agencies.

Arthur Lih is the founder, inventor and chief executive officer of LifeVac, a portable non-invasive airway clearance device used to rescue a choking victim.

Arthur has consistently used his creativity and business skills to build his future. While at Stony Brook University, he worked part-time as a truck driver and operations manager in the Air Transportation industry. He worked hard and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY Stony Brook. Upon graduating he obtained a fulltime job in the industry, working basically all aspects of the trucking and air freight business. Arthur and a partner went on to form their own logistics company, ALBS Logistics. They built the company from the ground up achieving revenue over 20 million dollars annually. In 2012 they were acquired by Radiant Global Logistics. Arthur planned to retire after the acquisition to pursue his woodworking and crafting skills in order to expand his creation of boats and tree houses.

However, while visiting with a friend at the hospital, he was told the story of a seven-year-old child who lost his life choking on a grape. Arthur used his inquisitive mind, business, and building skills to find a solution and persevere to end choking tragedies. His decision to help his family and others is how LifeVac was born. His previous career in shipping helped with the logistics so they can ship products around the world. Lih built LifeVac into an international medical device company that is dedicated to saving the lives of countless people and displays how a small group of determined people can change the world.

Lih will be inducted into the Massapequa Hall of Fame this summer for his extraordinary achievement in entrepreneurship. He is a member of the Massapequa Elks Club and Long Island Speakers Bureau, has been a guest speaker for the Massapequa/Farmingdale Men’s Club, Copiague Chamber of Commerce, Nassau County Inventors and Entrepreneurs Club, and supports numerous charity foundations. He continues advocacy for the prevention of choking tragedies by educating the community at workshops and frequently conducting radio and television interviews.

Q&A What are some things you’re looking forward to in your life or career?

I have been fortunate to have accomplished major discoveries in my research while at the same time expanding Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) so that it is rated as the top research institute in genetics and molecular biology. My new plan is to increase our impact on detecting and treating human disease, using the knowledge we have gained from pioneering fundamental research.

What advice do you have for future medical personnel, especially after the past few years?

The past few years have taught us that medicine and medical personnel are critical to the normal functioning of society and this was true before the pandemic, certainly true during the pandemic and will be forever. All aspects of medicine, from discovery research to treating patients is one of society’s highest priorities, but in the U.S. we had a disastrous response to COVID-19. This was mainly due to the balkanized healthcare system and the lack of uniformity in government policy in different states and regions. This needs to be addressed.

Q&A What inspired you to be in the field and position you are in?

The vision of LifeVac came from a story that I heard of a woman in a hospital weeping following the death of her young son. The reason for his death was that a grape had become lodged in his windpipe and the Heimlich Maneuver did not work. Once I heard the story I set out to invent an apparatus that could clear an airway.

How has COVID created challenged in 2021? How did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge we’ve had to overcome as a business is consolidation and competition. However, we stand apart from the larger hospital systems and competitors by making each patient feel like a part of our family — you’re not just a number when you get treated by us in any of our clinics.

What are the three qualities that helped you get to where you are today?

The three qualities that helped us get where we are today are being friendly, professional, and dedicated. Our entire staff live by these three values and they set us apart from any other physical therapy and healthcare company on Long Island.

Patrick Beckley has served as the Commissioner for Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services since April 12, 2022. Prior to that he served as the deputy and acting commissioner of the agency since January of 2021. As commissioner, he is responsible for overseeing the Office of Emergency Management, Fire Rescue Communications, and the County Fire Marshal’s Office. In addition to those three functional areas, he also has oversight of the Suffolk County Fire Service Academy — which serves 109 fire departments and the Fire Extinguisher Licensing Board.

Prior to working for Suffolk County, Beckley served as the regional director of New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services on Long Island. During his tenure, Beckley worked to coordinate disaster services to aid in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, as well as other numerous historic storms and events including the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Beckley is a former damage control chief petty officer in the United States Navy, receiving several unit and personal commendations, including two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medals, five Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medals (NAM), and the Navy Expeditionary Medal for Operation Uphold Democracy during the Haitian crisis in 1993. In 2001, he was recalled to active service in the wake of 9/11 to support Operation Noble Eagle. He served on Naval Weapons Station Charleston Military Police Unit; is a 2018-graduate of the Energeia Partnerships two year leadership program at Molloy College, which focuses on identifying issues that exist and potential solutions surrounding Long Island; served as a volunteer firefighter with the Massapequa Fire Department from 2010-2015. He currently serves on the board of the New York Wildfire and Incident Management Academy and, in 2021, he was appointed to the Energeia Partnerships Board of Advisors.

Commissioner Rodney K. Harrison began his career with the New York City Police Department as a cadet in June of 1991. He was appointed to the rank of police officer in June 1992. His career in law enforcement has been an eventful and successful one.

During his career in the New York City Police Department, Harrison has achieved every rank from cadet to chief of department, including time as an undercover detective, precinct commander in Harlem, chief of patrol, and oversaw the NYPD’s Neighborhood Policing Model.

In 2003, Harrison was awarded the Combat Cross for extraordinary heroism while under fire from an armed perpetrator, he protected his injured partner and ensured their survival from deadly imminent circumstances.In 2019, Harrison was recognized for his extensive knowledge and experience with the department both from a patrol and investigative perspective.

He had the honor of being bestowed as the first African American chief of detectives in the bureau’s 175-year history. Harrison was promoted to the rank of NYPD chief of department, the highest ranking uniformed member of the service within the NYC Police Department. He achieved another historical milestone by becoming the first cadet to ever rise to the rank of chief of department. Following his retirement from the NYPD, after a 30-year career, he was nominated by Suffolk County Executive, Steve Bellone, to be Suffolk County’s Police Commissioner. Suffolk County’s legislature unanimously confirmed his nomination, clearing the path for his appointment. He would become the first Black police commissioner in Suffolk County Department’s history.

On a personal level, Harrison has been married to his wife LaPrena, a retired NYPD lieutenant, for 27 years. They have three daughters, Amber, Tyra, and Kaia, all scholarathletes and a two year old grandson, Christian. Most recently, Amber and Tyra were sworn in as New York City Police Officers.

Q&A How has COVID created challenges in 2021? How did you overcome it?

The health and safety of our clinicians is paramount. In 2021 we had a better understanding of how to treat COVID itself.

We started the year off strong and were fortunate to be able to provide our frontline workers with the vaccine. That was the easy part. It soon became evident, though, that the mental health of our clinicians was a necessary focus. For over a year, our team had been caring for some of the sickest patients they had ever encountered, and it was taking a toll. Several of their own team members became sick with COVID themselves, and they also lost loved ones to the virus. Being there for each other took on a whole new level. We are thankful for the tremendous resources that we have been able to provide our team members. This included our Care for the Caregiver program, as well as several other personal wellness support services. Our colleagues are members of our community just as much as our patients, and everyone in our community needs our care.

What changes in the medical field, or in overall health, have you seen since COVID? Certainly, we are using new drugs and techniques since COVID. Not to mention, we are learning and communicating more effectively and more often. More importantly, our vigilance is higher than ever—not only for our patients, but also our colleagues. Medicine has always been a team effort, but this has certainly increased over the past two years.

We are looking out for each other, both professionally and personally.

What advice do you have for future medical personnel, especially after the past few years?

The best advice for future medical personnel is to do what you love. Take care of yourself and each other. COVID should not be a deterrent for pursuing medicine as a career, but rather a sentinel event that has allowed us to take better care of our patients and each other. We are fortunate to live in an area that supports the medical profession and provides opportunities for growth.

Q&A How has COVID created challenges in 2021? How did you overcome it?

Our first challenge in 2021 was developing ways to get people vaccinated. To build out vaccination pods where people could get the vaccine out to the public in an all-inclusive manner.

The other challenge was convincing people it was safe.

One of the methods we used was the social vulnerability index.

Social Vulnerability refers to the inability of people, organizations and societies to withstand adverse impacts to hazards due to characteristics inherent in social interactions, institutions and systems of cultural values. As an emergency manager, it tells me if we will need to go into a community sooner or stay longer before and after a disaster. It really is a very useful tool.

Q&A How has COVID created challenges in 2021? How did you overcome it?

COVID created many challenges in law enforcement. Officers were at a heightened risk of exposure due to their close contact with members of the public. Our officers do not report to work while sick, and so as the virus quickly spread through the department, we experienced a shortage of staff. There was a large number of our members that contracted the disease. Most recovered but unfortunately we did lose some lives to this virus. COVID cases have recently surged in New York: and, though the cases are with milder symptoms, we are still experiencing shortage of staff due to sick time.

Commissioner Patrick J. Ryder was named Commissioner of the Nassau County Police Department in February 2018.

He has spent 38 years in law enforcement, serving the last 36 years with the Nassau County Police Department.

Patrick began his law enforcement career with the New York Police Department in 1984. He joined the NCPD in 1986 and was assigned to the 3rd Precinct and in 1989 assigned to the Bureau of Special Operations. Promoted to sergeant in 1995 and assigned to the 5th Precinct, 8th Squad, and the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) as the deputy commanding officer.

In 2008 he was designated the commanding officer of AFU, where he proactively implemented a number of lifesaving programs and initiatives that helped ensure officer and public safety. These include the NCPD’s Real-Time Intelligence (RTI) system; the R.E.A.C.H. Program; the Civilian Intelligence Analyst Program; the DNA Collection Initiative; and the creation of the Counter-Terrorism Unit, Think Tank, and the Department’s Criminal Intelligence Rapid Response Team (CIRRT). Together these initiatives have brought crime in Nassau County to historic lows, allowing residents to enjoy one of the lowest crime rates in the United States.

He has a master’s degree in homeland security and management from Long Island University. He is an adjunct professor of criminal justice and intelligence-led policing at Nassau Community College and taught at Dowling College until 2015. He currently sits on the Advisory Board for Criminal Justice at SUNY Farmingdale and has been a counter-terrorism lecturer at the University of Maryland Center for Health and Homeland Security.

Patrick is a New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services-Certified Law Enforcement instructor, a New York State-certified crime and intelligence analyst, a certified anti-money laundering specialist, and has top secret clearance with the FBI’s New York Field Office. He has also been deputized as an IRS Criminal Investigator. Additionally, he has trained members of law enforcement agencies from Egypt, Tajikistan, Tunisia, South Africa, and Turkey. He and his wife Jill have three children: Liam, Sean, and Meghan.

Chief Fire Marshal Michael F. Uttaro has been with the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s ffice since 1999 and oversees a department of over 100 staff members, which is composed of the Fire Marshal’s Office, Fire Communications Center, and the Fire Police EMS Academy.

The Fire Marshal’s Office investigates hundreds of fires every year for their cause and origin, the hazardous materials response team responds to hundreds of requests for assistance, and fire marshals perform thousands of fire safety inspections. Fire Communications receives and dispatches thousands of emergency calls, while the Fire Police EMS Academy instructs and certifies hundreds of students a year.

He has been an active member of the Nassau County volunteer fire service since 1989 as a volunteer firefighter with the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department, to which he served as a chief officer from 2001 to 2010 and is still an active member. Uttaro, as county fire coordinator during the unprecedented pandemic, was charged with coordinating Nassau County volunteer fire service emergency medical responders to ensure all calls for help were answered.

He also ensured they were informed with the latest information in a daily situational awareness report and led the interpretation and enforcement of NYS Executive Orders relating to essential businesses and compliance.

Uttaro has been a lifelong Nassau County resident and is married to Doreen for 25 years; they have three children.

NASSAU COUNTY FIRE-POLICE ACADEMY NUMC Charles Mackie is a nationally registered paramedic and certified instructor in New York State, predominantly in the Nassau County region. He is a former paramedic and Instructor for the Nassau County Police Department Emergency Ambulance Bureau for 32 years.

Mackie is currently an EMT, a paramedic instructor, and the chairman of the Nassau County Regional Emergency Medical Services Council. As a former officer and a current firefighter and paramedic within the department, Mackie has been a volunteer member of the Massapequa Fire Department Engine Company #1 since 1979. He has also volunteered as a member of his local Historical Society of the Massapequas since 2008, currently holding the position of president of the society since 2017.

Mackie has been married to his wife Doreen since 1986 and has three adult children — daughter’s Kristin and Kaitlin, and a son Kevin — all of whom are former or current volunteer firefighters and/or emergency medical technicians working in the fire service pre-hospital EMS system, and hospital-based healthcare systems.

What inspired you to be in the field and position that you’re in?

My family’s history of volunteerism within the fire and EMS services and the desire to help my neighbors and community prompted me to make EMS medical care my career. My field experience as a career paramedic allows me to educate and train the new students coming into EMS. What changes in the medical field, or in overall health, have you seen since COVID? A continuing reduction in EMS staffing, applications for EMS training, and volunteerism in the EMS industry.

What inspired you to be in the field and position that you’re in?

I have wanted to be a cop since I was a little kid. For me, it is all about service. I love making a difference in people’s lives and being a positive influence.

Do you have any inspiring moments from your work?

The courage I have witnessed by our men and women when we lose one of our own inspires me. We always find a way to bond in our saddest moments and come out stronger. But we will never forget!

Q&A

What inspired you to be in the field and position that you’re in?

I love to help people, educate people on fire safety, and work with the fire service; and I can think of no better role that fits that than chief fire marshal.

Do you have any inspiring moments from your work?

We helped install a smoke alarm for an older couple at their home following an EMS response, and that same smoke alarm alerted them to a minor fire recently a few years after installing the device and I was proud to know we made a difference in their lives.

What are some things you’re looking forward to in your life or career?

I am looking forward to making the fire service in Nassau County a better and more coordinated fire service while maintaining the great history of the volunteer fire service. When I leave this position one day, I hope my legacy is that I made a difference, that I was part of something bigger than myself that made lasting changes, and, most importantly, that I am remembered for being a good and decent person that made his family proud.

Dr. Kimon Bekelis is a board certified, fellowship trained neurosurgeon with subspecialty training in minimally invasive endovascular neurosurgery. He additionally specializes in Gamma Knife Radiosurgery, and complex spine, and brain operations.

After finishing his medical school education, he spent a year as a postdoctoral research fellow in neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He completed his neurosurgery residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, where he served as the chief resident, and his fellowship in endovascular neurosurgery and neuro-critical care at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, one of the largest stroke centers nationally.

Dr. Bekelis was directly involved in the structural planning of this state-of-the-art facility, as well as the recruitment and staffing of highly skilled surgeons, nursing, and technical support staff. He led the team that achieved the certification of the Stroke and Brain Aneurysm Center of Long Island as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by The Joint Commission, in less than a year after the inception of the program.As the only such facility on the south shore of Long Island, the multi-million dollar Stroke Center is filling a significant healthcare void, and transforming stroke care in our region. The center’s current success is evidenced by the high volume of patients who are brought to GSHMC each day, from throughout the CH Hospital System and beyond, to benefit from the life-saving services and surgical expertise now available.

Dr. Bekelis’ clinical work has been recognized by the community of Long Island. He received the Neurologic Science Stroke and Brain Aneurysm Award by the American Stroke/Heart Association, the Contemporary Award by the Long Island Elite, the RAISE Outstanding Individual Award by the National Stroke Association, the Innovations in Healthcare Award by the Long Island Business News, and the Excellence in Healthcare Award for Quality Improvement Champions by the National Hospital Fund.

Dr. Bekelis is well respected by his peers. He has held multiple leadership positions in several national committees in stroke, and neurosurgery. While still a resident, he was voted in the AANS Young Neurosurgeons Committee after national elections, and he was selected as a Council of State Neurosurgical Societies (CSNS) fellow, and subsequently as the fellow to the prestigious AANS/CNS Washington Committee.

What inspired you to be in the field and position that you’re in?

My interest in NeuroScience drew me into the field and position I’m in today.

Dr. Keith Brennan is an excellent clinician/hospitalist. He stands out for his compassion, energy and efficiency.

Dr. Brennan is highly respected and beloved by both his patients and hospital staff for his compassion, knowledge, dedication, and commitment to provide the best possible care. Even though a hospitalist is only responsible for hospital care during hospitalization, he has not shied away from providing advises to patients after discharge whenever needed. Dr. Brennan has received many compliment letters where patients and family members express their deepest gratitude for the outstanding care he provided.

He is a devoted physician educator and mentor; and is one of the core teaching attending for our internal medicine residency program and is well liked by all the residents. He was recently appointed as the wellness champion of the residency program.

In order to improve the care for the general patient population, Dr. Brennan actively participated in and made tremendous contributions to multiple hospital-wide projects. For example, he is one of the two physician leaders of the hospital’s geriatric care initiative. He was the physician champion in the project to administer COVID-19 vaccination to our inpatients

What are some things you’re looking forward to in your life or career?

I am looking forward to family gatherings for the holidays and in-person staff meetings as well. I look forward to seeing my residents having a similar training that I had with interactive lectures and didactics.

What advice do you have for future medical personnel, especially after the past few years?

If there is something that bothers you at work to the point it stresses you out, you should try to LOVE it and see what happens.

Focus on retaining positive feelings and you’ll be a lot stronger when negative things come your way. Never be afraid to ask for help!

What changes in the medical field, or in overall health, have you seen since Covid?

Positive flu PCR at the end of May!

Dr. Agostino Cervone is a board-certified general surgeon specializing in robotic and advanced laparoscopic surgery with extensive experience in minimally invasive hernia surgery and general surgery. Dr. Cervone is one of the region’s leading experts in complicated abdominal wall hernia repair using the world-class da Vinci Robotic Surgery System. He has been in practice on the East End of Long Island since 1999.

How has COVID created challenges in 2021? How did you overcome it?

The unknown of COVID was extremely challenging in 2020 and 2021. This has been pretty much remedied with the use of vaccines, our experience in how to treat the illness, natural immunity, and less virulent strains of the virus.

What changes in the medical field, or in overall health, have you seen since COVID? Unfortunately, with patients withholding from seeking medical care, disease extremes became more evident. This has improved greatly over the past months. The population is returning to healthcare prevention of disease, thankfully.

Do you have any inspiring moments from your work?

Watching the transformation of a depressed, withdrawn person to a confident, jubilant person because of my surgery. Knowing I had a positive effect in their lives is greatly inspirational.

He is president of New York College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, president of the National Federation of Chinese TCM Organizations (NFCTCMO), vice president of World Traditional Medicine Forum, and the editor-in-chief of Journal of Complementary Medicine & Alternative Healthcare as well as international executive editor of Chinese Medicine & Culture.

He was a chair of the Accreditation Commission of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (ACAOM) and a vice chair of the New York State Board for Acupuncture.

He was a recipient of Pearl Wisdom Award by Acupuncture Society of New York (ASNY) (2015), Lifetime Achievement Award by Institute for Asian Studies of St. John’s University (2018), and Sailing Award for International Exchange of Traditional Chinese Medicine by World Federation of TCM Services and Trade (2020).

He has published around 60 research papers in various medical journals in different countries. He has also published The Effectiveness of Acupuncture Treatment on Various Diseases (1990), Guide of Consulting Acupuncture (1994), and Diversification of Acupuncture Practice in the U.S. (2016).

He is also a co-author of more than ten books Dr. Chen has been a reviewer of ICD-10 TM code and Chinese medicine Terminology invited by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Q&A What inspired you to be in the field and position that you’re in?

I have started working in New York College of Traditional Chinese Medicine since 1996, several months after its establishment. I was academic dean at that time. Then, the president of the College was Dr. Chi Chow. She established the college when she was 68 years old and most people retired at that age. Ten years later, she retired due to health issues and I took over her position as the president. Her contribution, endurance, and spirit really inspired me to succeed in her position to now. Our school’s library is named Chi Chow Library. She is always remembered.

What changes in the medical field, or in overall health, have you seen since Covid?

Before the pandemic, opioid drug abuse was a national crisis and emergency and non-pharmacological pain management is a trend encouraged by the lawmakers, top research institutes and national and state health administration.

Acupuncture was an important role for non-pharmacological pain management. After the pandemic, the overuse of opioid drugs is even worse and long Covid symptoms, especially PTSD, cases are climbing abruptly. It gives the acupuncture profession more opportunities to deal with those health problems. I believe that acupuncture will play more important roles in integrative medicine trends.

Dr. Todd J. Cohen is a triple boarded (Johns Hopkins, Stanford, and UCSF trained) practicing cardiologist, inventor, educator, and serial entrepreneur. He built and directed two of the busiest EP Programs on Long Island (North Shore University and Winthrop University Hospitals).

He is the founder and director of the Long Island Heart Rhythm Center in Old Westbury (on NYITCOM campus) and is chief of cardiology and director of medical device innovation at NYITCOM. Hospital affiliations include Good Samaritan Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital Morningside.

Dr. Cohen has authored many publications, including articles published in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Circulation, and Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and has written the 2010 “Best Health Book” entitled A Patient’s Guide to Heart Rhythm Problems (Johns Hopkins University Press). He serves on editorial boards of the Journal of Invasive Cardiology and EP Lab Digest. He has served as principal investigator of numerous investigatorinitiated studies (including the Pacemaker and Implantable Defibrillator Lead Survival Study) and multicenter trials, including SCD-HeFT and the EnRhythm MRI trial.

He has 37 issued U.S. patents and has licensed and/or sold inventions to several leading companies in the field of electrophysiology, catheter ablation, implantable devices, and robotics.

Most recently, Pollock No. 5 (Dr. Cohen’s debut murder mystery/thriller novel) was released (Black Opal Books) and is available at Barnes and Noble as well as on Amazon. It is featured at this year’s ThrillerFest in New York City. The book features “MD,” an inventing art-loving doctor, who gets accused of stealing a priceless Jackson Pollock painting and killing an heiress. The book takes place in NYC, the Hamptons, throughout Long Island, Miami, and San Francisco. He is also a member of Mystery Writers of America and International Thriller Writers.

Dr. Karina W. Davidson’s research focuses on innovations in personalized trials and healthcare systems to manage chronic disease and patient symptoms that incorporate patient preferences and values. Personalized (N-of-1) Trials are a form of evidence generation designed to identify precision therapies to improve a single patient’s symptoms, conditions or behaviors, and promote their overall health and wellness.

Dr. Davidson was awarded the NIH Transformative R01 grant to accomplish the vision of reimagining the process by which therapies are tested in the clinical encounter, with the goal of identifying therapies that will provide maximal benefit and minimal harm for each individual patient. Dr. Davidson has spearheaded the NIH-funded MAVEN: Developing Diverse Senior Scientist Leaders. This project aims to increase the diversity of the scientific workforce at the senior level by providing mid-career scientists from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds with key skills to navigate productive, engaging, and rewarding senior faculty positions and science portfolios.

Led by Dr. Davidson, the Institute of Health System Science is also home to several other cutting-edge research programs, including many learning health system innovations, also aimed at improving patient care.

Additionally, in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the institute launched the Northwell Health COVID-19 Research Consortium with the purpose of providing rapid, rigorous, and transparent reporting of the clinical-care expertise and scientific advances that emerge from the health system. In doing so, the Consortium assists other health systems and the public at large in the management of their response to the disease. Most recently, she served as chair of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF).

Robert Ciatto serves as executive director of Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities (ACLD), one of the largest non-profit agencies in the state of New York. In this role, Ciatto is responsible for the strategic direction of the organization, providing innovative leadership and assuring the integrity and effectiveness of the agency’s wide-ranging programs.

Under Ciatto’s leadership, ACLD supports more than 1,300 children and adults with autism and learning/ developmental disabilities and their families throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. Ciatto also directs the activities of more than 1,300 employees and over 100 program sites, including community residences and apartment programs.

With a distinguished career in the non-profit sector spanning more than 25 years. Ciatto has dedicated his entire professional life to ensuring that individuals with special needs receive the services and attention they need and deserve. His commitment to operational excellence has earned him a well-earned reputation as a trailblazer offering compassionate, visionary leadership.

Ciatto was involved with the launch of ACLD’s RewearAble program, which provides sustainable employment for people with special needs, and in the creation of ACLD’s Program Without Walls day habilitation initiative.

Ciatto worked tirelessly during the COVID-19 pandemic, implementing proactive measures to safeguard the health of the 400 residents who reside in ACLD homes and apartments. He was instrumental in the launch of a new Respite Center in Bethpage, N.Y. a facility designed to protect and meet the health care needs of residents infected with COVID-19 who did not require hospitalization.

Ciatto’s professional affiliations include memberships in the InterAgency Council, Advance Care Alliance of New York (ACA/NY) and the Long Island Alliance. He was previously a member of the National Association for the Dually Diagnosed. Active in the community, Ciatto is a longstanding supporter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation as well as Italian-Americans in Government, Inc. He also donated his time to support youth and coach in the Connetquot Youth Baseball Organization.

Ciatto holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from SUNY-Old Westbury and earned his Master of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling from LIU Post. Ciatto resides with his wife and son in Ronkonkoma, NY.

Q&A What are some things you’re looking forward to in your life or career?

Last year I published my debut art heist novel — Pollock No. 5 (Black Opal Books) about an inventing art-loving doctor (“MD”) who gets accused of stealing a priceless Jackson Pollock painting and killing an heiress. I am currently working on the follow-up art heist novel — based on MD (and characters from my first novel) and the mysterious UK street artist Banksy. I look forward to the completion and publication of that novel in the near future.

Q&A What is the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Conduct research that will have the most impact on the most people. It is easy to be fascinated by many health services and public health research areas, and there often seems no end in sight to the number of issues and questions we need to explore. But a laser-like focus on one big research problem will help many more people than juggling multiple, more minor research problems. Envision how the answer to that research problem will change clinical practice, health promotion and quality of life, and be tireless in your efforts.

Jeannine Eslinger has worked night shifts for the past 15 years in the Mount Sinai South Nassau ED. She always arrives early and is eager to tackle challenges. Jeannine is intelligent, empathic, efficient, and one of the most hardworking PAs on our team. When you see her walk in, you know she will have the waiting room cleared out in no time. She is the first to pick up an open shift and lend a helping hand. She is a role model for the younger staff members as well as PA students. She is loved by her coworkers and patients alike. Jeannine is also the mother of a set of twins and a special needs autistic teenage son, so between juggling the extra care he requires, therapies, dance, baseball, homework, and working overnights, she is considered more of a superhero! Her dedication to her family and her job are like no other and Mount Sinai South Nassau is privileged to have her as part of the team.

Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. is president and chief executive officer of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA). Under his leadership, AFA’s programs, services, revenue, and national presence has grown tremendously, and AFA earned Charity Navigator’s highest rating seven consecutive times for its fiscal efficiency, transparency, and accountability.

During Fuschillo’s tenure, AFA, he expanded its Helpline hours and accessibility, creating a web chat and text message feature which serves individuals in 90+ languages. As well as, grew its memory screening efforts into a year-round National Memory Screening Program providing free memory screenings nationwide. He launched an “Educating America Tour” to connect communities with information about Alzheimer’s, brain health, caregiving, and care planning.

Fuschillo created The Apartment, a model dementiafriendly residence showcasing ways practical design and technology can enhance quality of life and safety for someone with dementia; and built America’s first Respite Care Relief Park on Long Island, a dementia-friendly place where caregivers and individuals with Alzheimer’s can go to enjoy the outdoors, socialize, and learn about support services.

He opened an Education & Resource Center providing therapeutic/activity programming, educational classes, and professional training, as well as the AFA Teal Room, a free online library of programs to help individuals with dementia and caregivers stay active and engaged from anywhere.

Fuschillo increased investment in community-based services and research, including at NYU Langone HospitalLong Island, Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, and Stony Brook University. Before joining AFA in 2014, Fuschillo served as a New York State Senator for nearly 16 years, representing the 8th District on Long Island and authoring over 200 laws.

CABS HEALTH NETWORK Sherly Demosthenes-Atkinson was appointed as CEO of CABS Home Attendants Service, Inc., in 2017 and holds a master’s of Health Administration from Hofstra University. With over 20 years of healthcare experience, she exemplifies CABS’ mission of equitable innovative healing, teaching, and discovery through quality service delivery to underserved communities.

She served as Executive Director from 2013 to 2017, and associate director of case management from 2006 to 2013. During this time, she developed an appreciation for the clients served and the service delivery disposition of the organization. The cumulative knowledge of these roles inspires her vision to streamline and optimize the CABS organization—pivoting a transformational culture that centers on the patient experience.

Since 2017, under her leadership, CABS acquired a contract with the largest public housing authority in North America, the NYC Department of Housing Authority (NYCHA); contributed to the success of preventing hospitalizations through the New York State Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) Program with various partnerships including the NYC Health & Hospital Corporation (HHC); and launched the CABS Care Management Agency to expand and tailor the services CABS has been providing for years to a broader population in need of a more integrated, comprehensive and patient centered program.

During the pandemic in April 2021, CABS Homecare expanded to become the CABS Health Network, offering increased services to the most vulnerable across New York City and Long Island. During this time, her collective work was recognized by the Hofstra Master of Health Administration Alumni Association. In 2021, she was appointed to the Dean’s Advisory Board at Hofstra University School of Health Professions and Human Services.

Her work plays an integral role in the circle of care for our vulnerable, elderly, and disabled. Her mantra is, “Until aging in place is an option for all, the pursuit continues.”

Q&A Is Covid over?

No, we are in a transitional phase from a full-blown pandemic to a more controlled phase of the virus. However, we are experiencing new waves of infections as the virus continues to mutate and spin-off highly transmissible variants. We still need to make adjustments continuously.

Q&A Do you have any inspiring moments from your work?

For all the horrible things COVID did bring, during the peak in 2020, communities came together in a way that I have never seen before. Support and appreciation of healthcare workers helped tremendously in such a scary, unknown time in medicine. Cards, messages, meals, and more were brought to employees as a way for people to express their gratitude.

Many healthcare workers acknowledged how challenging and heartbreaking it had to be for family members to not be with their sick loved ones. Employees would come before their shifts, or stay later, to check in on hospitalized loved ones and sit with them, talk with them, or even FaceTime with them to unite families in a new way. We adapted and came together and that was inspiring to see.

What advice do you have for future medical personnel, especially after the past few years?

My advice to future medical personnel is to always remember balance, balance between work and home. Being in medicine, one always knows not to take life for granted. The year 2020 made that even more evident. While at work, do the best that you can do, be a team player, learn from your coworkers, listen and advocate for your patients, and go into each shift trying to be a bit better than you were the last time. When you get home, find that time for you! It may be going for a run, a game night with family, sitting around the table catching up with those you love; whatever it is, cherish each moment.

Q&A What inspired you to be in the field and position that you’re in?

Helping others is one of the greatest things anyone can do.

My parents taught me the importance of giving back at a young age — they were both very involved in community organizations — and it’s something I’ve carried with me throughout my life, from serving in the New York State Senate to coaching my children’s soccer teams. Having the privilege to help people across the country, find ways to enhance services for them, and make a positive difference in their lives is very rewarding professionally and personally.

GOHEALTH URGENT CARE – NORTHWELL HEALTH Dr. Green was born and raised in Queens, NY. He completed his undergraduate at Adelphi University and went on to complete a Masters from Long Island University and North Shore University Hospital in Cardiovascular Perfusion. He continued his education at Ross University where he earned his Medical Degree. Dr. Green then pursued an Advanced Post Graduate Certificate from NYU in Health Policy and Management. Finally, he completed

his Family Medicine Residency training at Robert Wood Johnson in NJ, where he was the chief resident. Upon graduating he received the RWJ Clinical Excellence Award.

He joined Northwell Health - GoHealth Urgent Care in 2017 and since has been an integral part of the GoHealth team. Dr. Green has been recognized for his quality and leadership skills and as such in April 2020 he became an associate medical director. Furthermore, he helped start the GoEducate series, a GoHealth National weekly internal education publication. He is the lead editor for the publication. In 2020 he also received an award for Antibiotic Stewardship from the Urgent Care Association.

Dr. Green has been appointed as assistant clinical professor of Family Medicine at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra University/Northwell University. He has been recognized as an Active Teacher in Family Medicine by the American Academy of Family Physicians for his work with the Northwell Family Medicine Residencies. He is very comfortable caring for patients of all ages, male or female, pregnant, from birth to geriatrics.

Q&A What advice do you have for future medical personnel, especially after the past few years?

Don’t go into medicine for money, and don’t do it because others think you should. You must really have a passion to

help others and do it for yourself. You have to really want to devote your entire life to it. You may be financially burdened by student loans, you may miss some personal events. You have to continue to read and stay up to date every day. You also have to have a family that understands this need and drive to help others. If you understand that and still want it, then you are like me. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

What inspired you to be in the field and position that you’re in?

I think family and friends inspire me and the drive to help others.

I try to treat each patient like they are my relative and I want to help them the way I would want someone to help my family.

Urgent care allows me to take care of acutely ill patients and help them get better. Being an associate medical director allows me to teach not only residents but PAs, NPs, and other doctors.

In turn, I am part of the care of their patients as well.

What changes in the medical field, or in overall health, have you seen since COVID? COVID has exposed many issues in the medical field, similar to others. The most obvious one is we are truly on the front line.

Every day we are exposed to a potentially deadly illness and yet we still come to work. We do our best to protect ourselves and in doing so, our coworkers and family members. Staffing shortages have been felt throughout the pandemic and healthcare has seen this too. Many specialists and primary care physicians moved to virtual platforms during this time.

Many patients have neglected their chronic illnesses due to decreased access. Urgent care has become the first place to go when someone needs care, whether that’s for an injury, an illness, or just how to stay safe from COVID.

Q&A Is COVID over?

COVID is here to stay, in the sense that the virus is not eradicated. However, we have learned to manage the panic and urgency that once was associated with this virus. We taught ourselves and our patients to remain educated and resourceful and — most importantly — calm. That way we will be prepared as a community for any mutated version of this disease.

What inspired you to be in the field and position that you’re in?

As a child, I was inspired by the practitioners that I saw as a patient and noticed that the healthcare field is not simply about medical knowledge and solutions. Rather, it is about intuitive listening and being able to tap into the understanding of what is not being said; to be able to compassionately look deeper — beyond the patient’s physical symptoms and needs — but also at their emotional ones. A healthcare provider can often be the one to make a traumatic and difficult experience into a bearable one. That is a role and responsibility that I see as my utmost privilege.

As the Medical Director of AFC Urgent Care Long Island since 2017, Dr. Daniel La has numerous accomplishments.

He was instrumental in the procurement of the Abbot COVID-19 rapid test, allowing AFC to offer rapid testing in all its Long Island locations, with AFC being the first urgent care center in the nation to administer rapid testing for the general public.

Dr. La also created a program with MacArthur Airport and the Town of Islip to provide arriving passengers to the Long Island airport with an option to sign up for a COVID-19 testing appointment to minimize quarantine time for travelers and help protect Long Island from the spread of the virus.

He is the education preceptor for the physician assistant’s program for Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra University, Touro College University System, Molloy College, and SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine. All physician assistant students from these colleges have a rotation at AFC Urgent Care in family medicine and are trained with or were overseen by Dr. La. Under the supervision of Dr. La, AFC Urgent Care Long Island offers externships for Hunter Business School and Nassau Community College in the Medical Assistant and Hospital Administration programs, and he also created a program that AFC Urgent Care allows for high school seniors to fulfill their senior project hours and also provides scholarships to high school seniors in East Meadow, West Islip, and Farmingdale.

Under Dr. La’s leadership, AFC Urgent Care Long Island has received many awards and accolades, including the AFC Urgent Care President’s Club Award, East Meadow (2019), AFC Urgent Care Revolution Award, East Meadow (2019), and AFC Urgent Care Best Patient Experience Award in East Meadow (2017), and West Islip (2018).

Dr. La received his undergraduate degree from State University of New York Stony Brook and his medical degree from State University of New York Downstate Medical Center College of Medicine. He is a member of the Nassau County Medical Society, American Board of Family Medicine and Urgent Care Association of America, and is a civil surgeon with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, as well as being a certified medical examiner with the Workers Compensation Board and the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration).

Dr. La resides in Roslyn Heights with his wife, Wendy, and their three children.

Herrick Lipton is chief executive officer of New Horizon Counseling Center, a nonprofit comprehensive behavioral health-and-wellness organization. New Horizon serves over 15,000 New Yorkers yearly. Since he assumed his leadership position in January 2013, Lipton has led New Horizon to a 300% growth in the organization’s revenues, and a 125% increase in clinical services. Q&A How has COVID created challenges in 2021? How did you overcome it?

COVID brought about unprecedented challenges that were never before seen in the 40+ years of New Horizon Counseling Center’s existence. A significant challenge was an immediate influx of new clients. Prior to the pandemic it was estimated that 1 in 4 Americans experienced some sort of behavioral health issue. Throughout the pandemic and even now, it is estimated that almost 80% of Americans are in that category. New Horizon was able to mobilize our workforce and enable them to work remotely and/or in person to continue to provide the best possible behavioral health care to the individuals we serve.

Fortunately, the team at New Horizon Counseling Center was ready, willing and able to accept the challenge and embodied “Flexibility,” one of our core values, meeting our clients needs over and over again throughout the pandemic. Every single member of the New Horizon team pitched in to ensure that our clients were taken care of. I am beyond proud of what our team accomplished during these incredibly trying times.

Dr. Parul Dua Makkar is a general dentist and owner of PDM Family Dental in Jericho. She completed her Bachelor of Science from University of Central Oklahoma Magna Cum Laude in 1999 and then DDS from University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry in 2003. She practiced in Alberta, California before moving to New York. Here, she completed a GPR training at Staten Island University Hospital in 2007 and has been in private practice ever since.

Her focus is on patient education and creating open communication between herself and the patients. She is a strong advocate of oral cancer research after the loss of her brother, Dr. Manu Dua at age 34. She has co-authored and has been featured on several dental journals as well as podcasts, and is also a coauthor of her late brother’s book “Life Interrupted, Dr. Dua’s Survival Guide.”

Dr. James Marotta is a dual board-certified facial plastic surgeon with education and training from some of the finest institutions in the world. He attended Columbia University and later graduated as president of the medical honor society at SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine. He trained at Yale University in head and neck surgery and was recognized as the top surgeon in the program. Dr. Marotta completed additional subspecialty training as a fellow in facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery at one of the leading facial plastic fellowships in the country.

Board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Marotta specializes in facial plastic surgery with particular expertise in rhinoplasty and facial rejuvenation. He has consistently been named the Best Cosmetic Surgeon on Long Island due to this great expertise, his mastery of the latest surgical techniques, and a genuine concern for his patients. A top hair restoration surgeon, he offers the most advanced hair restoration and transplantation techniques available.

Dr. Marotta is a clinical assistant professor of surgery at SUNY Stony Brook and holds hospital privileges at St. Catherine of Siena in Smithtown. He has a medical doctorate with distinction in research and has published several scientific articles, including articles on revision rhinoplasty and the midface lift. Through his fellowship with the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Marotta volunteers his time and surgical expertise to FACE to FACE, which helps victims of domestic violence with facial injuries and to FACES OF HONOR, which helps veterans who have suffered face or neck injuries while deployed overseas.

He has also traveled to Ecuador on a medical mission to perform microtia surgery on children born with ear deformities. This devoted husband and father of two enjoys spending time with his wife and children — playing golf, skiing, and taking advantage of Long Island’s beautiful beaches.

Dr. Steven Mendelsohn graduated medical school at the age of 23 and became the managing partner of Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology in 1992, when he was 36-years-old.

Dr. Mendelsohn’s life’s direction and mission was radically altered when my mother, living in Pittsburgh, passed away at age 65, just four months after being diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. For years, she did everything she was supposed to do — annual mammograms, breast sonograms, and clinical breast examinations. She had a palpable lump, which her physicians dismissed as another of her many rheumatoid nodules. Annual mammograms consistently reported a lack of any interval change. Dr. Mendelsohn was asked to look at all of her records months later. Mammogram image quality was fair at best and no radiologist compared beyond one year, whereby growth would have been quite evident. The biopsy needle tip missed the nodule on the sonogram. The discordant pathology report was ignored. Innumerable repeated errors and sloppiness eliminated her chance for being cured. This created the driving mission for me and subsequently for the entire Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology practice.

The new MRI units eliminate patient motion issues and improve comfort. Just as cell phone and computer technology have improved dramatically over the past decade, so has MRI. We continually replace our units achieving an overall average MRI fleet age of 2-3 years, while the local and national average age is 10 to 12 years.

Dr. Mendelsohn’s philosophy and business concepts are simple: change, learn, teach, lead, exceed expectations. Change must be constant. If we are not changing, we are not improving. If we are doing things the same as two or three years ago, we need to rethink the entire process. Survey results and feedback are not for data aggregation, but to be acted upon and result in changes for improvement.

Our goal is to completely exceed expectations: POPE — Provide an Overwhelming Positive Experience — from ease of contacting us and scheduling an appointment; employing kind, friendly, helpful, engaged staff; minimal to no patient waiting time; accurate subspecialty interpretations; and fast report turnaround time.

With all these in mind, my personal goal is to continue to improve the quality of radiologic care in New York, despite all the economic pressures to compromise and marginalize the care provided to each individual patient.

Q&A Is Covid over?

In my opinion, no it’s something we have to live with. The effects on those who had covid and vaccines is still unknown with no long term studies. Time will tell how these past years have truly impacted us.

What inspired you to be in the field and position that you’re in?

To be able to help others and to get an almost instant gratification when you help someone get out of pain or when you help restore a problem by fixing a tooth. We work so close to our patients and we are the key in their overall well being.

It’s inspiring to play a small role in their lives.

How has Covid created challenges in 2021? How did you overcome it?

I had to shut my practice down for three months, it increased costs of doing business with the cost of supplies escalated.

It’s harder to find employees. There is a reduced number of patients and reimbursement from patients. It’s been a real challenge. Public-private partnerships (PPP) funding and Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) have been a saver.

A graduate of Yale University, Dr. Barry R. Morgenstern received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1981. He completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at New York University Medical Center, where he also served as chief resident. Dr. Morgenstern’s post-doctoral training included a fellowship in cardiovascular and interventional radiology at the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University.

Dr. Morgenstern’s interests include body imaging, breast imaging, cardiovascular, and interventional radiology.

In 2006, Rich Rattan had a dream become a reality when he formed Safe Health Educators, a state-ofthe-art training Center in Baldwin New York. He has a continuous mission of providing premium educational programs for emergency service professionals, and consultative services for organizations. Rattan has been providing emergency services in challenging environments for over 30 years.

With experience as a chief in the United Nations Fire Service, he was tasked with training 360 firefighters to FDNY standards, procuring equipment, and opening 17 independent fire stations in Kosovo, Bosnia, Sierra Leone, Haiti, and more.

Rattan offers a vast background in the healthcare field and emergency services, consisting of working as a paramedic in New York City, volunteering as a firefighter on Long Island while serving as dispatcher, chief instructor, chief safety officer, and captain four times.

Rattan — awarded the SBDC Veteran of the year 2020, Nato Medal Of Peace 2000 and many more Fire and community awards — has developed program curriculums for Hazardous Materials Operations for Hospitals and taught this program to over 70 hospitals across the United States. He also holds instructor certifications in Defensive Driving (DDC6/8) and Certified Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (CEVO) with the National Safety Council. Recently, he has obtained instructor certification on ALERRT (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training), Department of Homeland Security instructor for CBRNE and Hazmat Awareness and Operations, and a variety of NIMS courses.

In addition, he is an American Heart Association (AHA) instructor for Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Over the past 16 years, Safe Health Educators has grown and provided a variety of educational and consultative services to hospitals, fire departments, police departments, and private industry.

A dynamic public health professional, Dr. Jeffrey L. Reynolds is president and chief executive officer of Family and Children’s Association (FCA) — one of Long Island’s oldest and largest health and human services organizations. FCA offers community-based programs for struggling families, at-risk adolescents, vulnerable seniors, and adults with substance use disorders.

During his tenure, Dr. Reynolds has helped secure more than $12 million in new funding, launched innovative services — including three recovery centers — and spearheaded a move to a new headquarters.

Prior to joining FCA, he was executive director of the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), an organization providing substance abuse related programs. While at the Long Island Association for AIDS Care, he co-founded and served as chief operating officer for BiasHELP of Long Island, an organization dedicated to assisting hate crime victims and their families.

Dr. Reynolds serves on heroin and opioid prevention task forces and advisory panels in New York State, Nassau, and Suffolk counties, and the Town of Huntington; on the boards of the New York State Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare, Nassau’s Family Violence Task Force, Suffolk’s Welfare-to-Work Commission, and Lightning Warriors, a youth triathlon team. Dr. Reynolds was recently elected to the Long Island Association (LIA) board.

Named as one of the “most influential Long Islanders” by the Long Island Press (2010-21), he was inducted into the Long Island Business Hall of Fame in 2021, and has been honored by the Simple Hope Foundation, Caron Treatment Centers, Strong Youth, Inc., the Long Island Recovery Association, Mainstream House, and LICADD. Dr. Reynolds holds a master’s in public administration (MPA) and a doctorate from Stony Brook University’s School of Social Welfare.

Q&A What inspired you to be in the field and position that you’re in?

The first half of my career was dedicated to Interventional Radiology at Southside and Huntington Hospitals. It was an exciting time to be an interventionist, as new minimally invasive techniques were rapidly evolving. We had the opportunity to offer our patients many firsts, including metallic stent placement and injection of clot-dissolving medicines to treat occluded blood vessels, embolization procedures to control life-threatening bleeding, insertion of filters into the inferior vena cava to prevent pulmonary emboli, drainage of blocked kidneys and bile ducts, and many other innovative procedures. I still feel a deep sense of satisfaction from my experiences as an interventional radiologist. For even the simplest and most mundane interventional procedures represent a significant event for our patients. We are frequently the recipients of heartfelt thanks, sometimes from our clinical colleagues, but most importantly from our patients and their families.

What are inspiring moments from my work?

During the second half of my radiology career, I changed paths and dedicated myself to breast imaging and minimally invasive biopsy procedures in an outpatient office setting.

In a typical day, I interpret screening and diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasounds and MRIs, and perform image guided biopsies. Our practice was among the first on Long Island to introduce breast MRI, 3-D mammography, stereotactic and MRI guided biopsies. And while I enjoy diagnostic imaging and all these procedures, the most meaningful aspect of my job is through interactions with my patients. As a breast radiologist, every day I may have the opportunity to save a woman’s life. Nothing could be more rewarding.

Q&A How has Covid created challenges in 2021? How did you overcome it?

Covid has changed us all — the way we think and the way we live.

We moved our base training system, which allows students to still see and hear us while being in the same room.

Q&A What are some things you’re looking forward to in your life or career?

Somebody recently asked me to name my dream job. Truth of the matter is, I’m in it right now. Having said that, I also wouldn’t mind shaving another few minutes off my marathon time.

President and Chief Executive Officer of New Hyde Park-based Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation, Michael N. Rosenblut administers one of the region’s largest skilled nursing facilities for older adults.

Under his aegis, Parker developed community health divisions to address the continuum of care, through social model day care, certified home-health agency care and hospice programs. He has led progressive clinical, management and environmental initiatives, including new programs in wound care, pain management, palliative care and behavior modification, an award-winning technological infrastructure overhaul, and comprehensive building renovation and modernization.

Rosenblut launched Parker’s Integrated Emergency COVID-Response Campaign in the pandemic’s earliest days. During the COVID-19 outbreak, skilled nursing facilities were Ground Zero. As information and health mandates changed rapidly, Parker’s leadership was in constant communication, driving new policies ahead of the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Department of Health protocols. This enabled Parker to relay urgent messages to multiple audiences all in real time.

Early in the pandemic, Rosenblut led Parker to establish its Family Call Center in which staff members communicate regularly with family members, connecting them to additional information and resources as needed; and he has been a driving force in making the COVID-19 vaccine available. With his leadership, Parker added digital turnstiles to its entrance, automatically scanning staff IDs and measuring temperatures, enabling the Institute to maintain physical and health security via contactless technology. Parker invested in a virus-killing ultraviolet light system for its HVAC units. And the Institute upgraded its generator system to ensure that the power is always on, which is especially critical during COVID-19.

Rosenblut played a crucial role in developing culturally sensitive healthcare services and programs, including the first-of-its-kind Indian Cultural Unit and an Asian adult day health care program. He helped shape a patient outreach program firmly integrated into the region’s civic, religious, and community fabric. And he catalyzed Parker’s leadership in collaborative labor management projects, including quality improvement training, certified nursing assistant mentoring, and cost containment forums.

Dr. Charles Schleien is the senior vice president of Cohen Children’s Medical Center & Pediatric Services, Philip Lanzkowsky Professor, and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He arrived at Northwell in May, 2012. He previously held the post of executive vice chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons as well as Professor of Pediatrics and Anesthesiology. Prior to that, he was founding director of the division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, from 1999 to 2012, and served as medical director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of Columbia University.

Dr. Schleien attended Mount Sinai School of Medicine (1979), completed his pediatrics residency at Texas Children’s Hospital (1982), and his anesthesiology residency and pediatric critical care medicine fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital (1985) where he remained on the faculty as assistant director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and was NIH-funded for his research in brain metabolism, brain resuscitation, and CPR. He directed the Critical Care division at the University of Miami where he led a major research effort in brain resuscitation. He was a longstanding member of the American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee instrumental in formulating the first international pediatric guidelines in CPR. He has been honored with prestigious fellowships from the Society of Critical Care Medicine as well as the American Heart Association. He received his MBA from the Columbia Business School in 2008. He lives in New Rochelle, N.Y. and has two sons: Eric, an investment fund owner and Zachary, owner of Filter Off, a virtual dating site. Dr. Schleien’ hobbies include golf, racket sports, traveling, and good food.

THE GRAND PAVILION FOR REHABILITATION AND NURSING Dimitry Schwartz was born in Ukraine and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in nutrition and a Master’s degree in healthcare administration. His passion for helping others was ignited in 2008 when Schwartz worked as a community nutritionist for companies such as Food Bank of NYC and WIC Clinic at Brooklyn Hospital Center. He has also held chief clinical dietitian and director of food service positions.

In March 2020, Schwartz joined CareRite sister facility, the Hamlet, in an assistant administrator capacity. He obtained vital experience working through the pandemic to prepare him for an administrative leadership career. Now, Dimitry has proudly joined the Grand Pavilion team as administrator. He looks forward to carrying out the CareRite mission to ensure the Grand Pavilion community will provide exceptional, genuine care and customer service.

Schwartz’s outlook on client care is simple, “treat every person as if they were your family.” Schwartz currently lives in Queens, NY, with his amazing wife. He enjoys staying active and traveling.

Q&A What inspired you to be in the field and position that you’re in?

By intuition and instinct. I have already been working in the healthcare field as a dietitian. In this role, I always felt that I had more to say about how healthcare is applied outside of just dietetics. I felt that there was a greater calling for me to be a healthcare leader.

I felt that patients and families deserve an unprecedented level of devotion and that is what I knew I wanted to give.

Do you have any inspiring moments from your work?

I am constantly inspired by the dedicated healthcare professionals around me. Their ability to remain strong, diligent, and devoted to the residents is really inspiring in a post-pandemic world. The pandemic truly tested people in ways no one can imagine. It is very inspiring to be around and see who cares for others to a degree I would never imagine.

What are some things you’re looking forward to in your life or career?

I am looking forward to new normalcy in healthcare which includes patient-driven standards and support from various networks, federal, state, and private that will allow for the nursing home industry to provide the best care possible. I am hopeful that I will have the ability to lead and direct healthcare in a positive and productive direction.

A lifelong Long Islander, Jody Silva Falk has enjoyed an over 25-year-career in the long term care pharmacy business. In 2020, she joined the Precision Pharmacy family and continues to provide her customers with excellent service, and has made a new home with Precision and enjoys working alongside the owners and operators.

She brings years of pharmacy experience and relationships to Precision LTC Pharmacy. Her expertise in service crosses over many types of residential healthcare facilities in New York including Assisted Living, Supported Housing, Mental Health programs, and Addiction Treatment agencies.

Precision Pharmacy, a family owned and operated pharmacy group for over 30 years, has a real footprint of reliable and caring service to the New York Area.

With four retail locations, a compounding pharmacy, and a specialized Long Term Care Pharmacy, Precision covers a lot of ground and services thousands of Long Islanders.

Gregory Solometo co-founded Alliance Homecare in 2006 and serves as the chief executive officer. He oversees the sales and marketing team and is the lead visionary behind the company’s short and long-term strategic initiatives.

Solometo started the company after he took care of his grandmother for five years when she was suffering from Alzheimer’s and created “The Grandma Rule” hiring philosophy. His firsthand experience of searching for caregivers showed him that there were limited resources that met his high level of standards of client care and customer satisfaction. Since that time, he has been committed to providing all clients with an elite and highly qualified team of healthcare professionals that exceed industry standards.

Prior to starting Alliance Homecare, Solometo worked primarily in the financial services industry. Most recently, he worked as a lean process engineer at Deutsche Bank where he provided strategic consulting services to various divisions of the investment banking structure and its operations in America and abroad.

Solometo graduated from Emory University in 1995.

Ancy Stephen has been working at Mount Sinai South Nassau for the past 22 years as a respiratory therapist.

She has always provided care beyond what her normal duties would require; Stephen is meticulous in her responsibilities, observing the status of each patient and individualizing their treatment plans to address their concerns by monitoring their alarms.

Stephen is holding down the fort for night shift staff with calmness and in a professional way. She shares her knowledge with the new employees at Mount Sinai South Nassau and is helping the establishment succeed in providing safe and excellent patient care. During the height of the pandemic, Ancy worked extra shifts to assist the department with the high volume of patients on ventilators.

She is an outstanding employee, role model, and just a great humble human being.

Q&A Do you have any inspiring moments from your work?

Being able to vaccinate so many people with the COVID-19 vaccine early on in 2021 was an amazing experience. Our Precision team dedicated themselves to welcoming every eligible person, customer or not, to come get vaccinated at our locations. It was a very proud moment of my career.

What are some things you’re looking forward to in your life or career?

I am looking forward to growing the services of Precision Pharmacy to offer more Long Islanders excellent pharmaceutical care. We specialize in servicing the most in need and hard to reach populations. I most look forward to working with more and more mental health related communities.

What advice do you have for future medical personnel, especially after the past few years?

Be patient, and know that you are very appreciated.

Q&A What advice do you have for future medical personnel, especially after the past few years?

You are needed now more than ever, and you can have a massive impact now. Take care of yourself, take care of your loved ones, and remember: your work may be the thing that brings joy to your clients, the thing that makes them feel human.

Your quick thinking may be the thing that saves a life. I know from personal experience that this work can be difficult, but bringing joy into the world is always a worthwhile pursuit.

Choosing a medical career is a direct way to bring joy to people who, without your help, may have real trouble receiving care and support. In some cases, your lifesaving intervention may be the reason why they have another opportunity to experience another birthday, anniversary, or meet a new grandchild. I guess my advice could be boiled down to: It’s worth it.

What inspired you to be in the field and position that you’re in?

My grandma, Valma. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. I searched for a home care solution for her but couldn’t find one that met my standards, so, I took over her care myself and brought along two of my friends who were nurses. The three of us cared for her for five years and were able to give her personal, compassionate, highquality care — which she wouldn’t have received from anyone else.

When she passed, I resigned from my position on Wall Street, and the three of us created Alliance Homecare, so that we could provide the same standard of care to more people.

Q&A What advice do you have for future medical personnel, especially after the past few years?

Following one’s passion should be the most important thing for future medical personnel. They must establish a high standard, practice flexibility, and how to manage stress in the continuing COVID era. Be strong and diligent to deal with any uncertain situations.

What inspired you to be in the position that you’re in?

I always wanted to choose a career in health care. Many of my family members are health care workers, and they are my heroes. I am inspired to be a respiratory therapist because it provides me with many challenging, and exciting opportunities to help people. There’s nothing better than helping patients thrive and do well healthwise. The last 21 years I have felt Mount Sinai South Nassau as my second home.

How has COVID created challenges in 2021? How did you overcome it?

The COVID-19 situation in 2021 was particularly stressful because it was hard to predict how things would develop, and our circumstances were changing rapidly. Along with the managers and coworkers as a team, having developed a meticulous strategy, we worked together and helped each other to overcome the situations. I am extremely grateful to Respiratory Manager, Iris Halem, for making sure that we had adequate equipment, including PPE along with proper staffing for us to be able to function to the best of our abilities. The management team of the Respiratory Department along with the top leadership in Mount Sinai South Nassau showed exemplary guidance in providing patient care and staff wellbeing at the same time which made our hospital a front-line war machine in combating the pandemic.

Lisa Veglia is the chief executive officer of Quality Services for the Autism Community (QSAC), an advocate for individuals with autism, and a licensed clinical Social Worker with a master’s degree in public administration and certificate in school administration.

She has been with QSAC since 1991 having previously served as the organization’s deputy executive director for 10 years and as the associate executive director for nine years. Prior to joining QSAC’s senior management team, she held various other leadership positions including director of the After School Program and director of Service Coordination. Lisa launched her career at QSAC as a direct support professional.

Lisa serves as the chairperson of the Queens Council on Developmental Disabilities, an organization which advocates for the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities. Lisa also serves as the president of the Board of Directors for the Interagency Council of Developmental Disabilities Agencies (IAC), which represents more than 150 member agencies serving more than 90,000 individuals with developmental disabilities.

In addition to advocacy organizations, Lisa is a secretary of the Board of Directors for Advance of Greater New York (AGNY) and has served on several ad-hoc committees aimed at addressing policy development and implementation focused on improving the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities. In 2012, Mayor Michael Bloomberg appointed Lisa to serve on New York City’s Community Services Board, also known as the Mental Hygiene Advisory Board.

A recognized expert on autism services, Lisa has been honored by several organizations for her commitment to the autism community. In 2018, she received the Community Enrichment Award from the Eden II Genesis Foundation. Additionally, Lisa received the June Marcus Award from the Queens Council on Developmental Disabilities and is also the recipient of an Award of Excellence from the National Center for Disability Services, an Outstanding Service Award from the Queensboro Council of Social Welfare, and the Hearst Scholarship Award in Nonprofit Management from Baruch College.

Lisa also serves as the president of the Board of Directors of the Long Island Crisis Center in Bellmore, NY. She has served on the board since 2009.

For Beatrice Weed, family, faith, and obtaining an education were important and influential aspects of her life. Growing up in Long Beach was a great childhood experience for her family; they were able to be “kids,” enjoy and thrive in the Long Beach School District, and have family-like neighbors. The community was there for each other. At an early age Beatrice realized this unconditional love within the community and learned how people are to treat one another.

She graduated from Long Beach High School and continued her education at Nassau Community College, then Long Island University — majoring in Business Administration and Communications and working full time for a Home Health Care agency. She started as a receptionist at the home health care agency, and was continually being promoted; first to human resources where she learned recruitment and retention of employees, and then to coordinator for two agency locations. She worked at South Nassau Communities Hospital from 2004 to 2017 as the home care department coordinator. She came across consistent issues of Long Beach lacking aides for patients, and it bothered her to not be able to provide to her hometown.

She went back to Long Beach and opened a home care agency to help her community with no savings and living paycheck to paycheck. She initially did not see it unfolding, but the feeling would not leave her soul and that’s when she was told to “take one patient at a time.” Her company has now been operating for six years, providing employment and assistance to the disabled and elderly persons in Long Beach and our neighboring communities.

But a few years ago, despite being in the home health care industry for 20 years, caretaking hit home.

Her mother became diagnosed with Dementia which has accelerated to Alzheimer’s Disease. Taking full care of her mother and going through the stages of this disease with her has been life changing. She has even more of an understanding to her clients and their families, on how one day, something happens out of your control, and life is never the same.

But her mother raised her family to be helpful to one another while we are here. Being a caretaker is unexplainable and hard to put into words. Today she realized that God has ordered her life personally and business with the wisdom and knowledge to be in her role today. This is her life’s assignment to help those that come her way through this business, whether it is one of her employees or clients.

Janine Stiene, is a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), teacher of the speech and hearing handicap, and trained myofunctional therapist with over 22 years of experience.

Stiene received her undergraduate degree from Loyola University and graduated with her MA in Speech Pathology from Hofstra University. She began her career working as a Clinical Fellow at Maryhaven Center of Hope, while also working part time at Cold Spring Harbor Central School District. Soon after, she obtained a full time position as an SLP at Hauppauge School District.

In 2003, she was able to buy a small privately-owned home-based speech practice. Seventeen years later, Stiene has grown her company with eight locations throughout Nassau and Suffolk County. The Suffolk Center for Speech and Myofunctional Therapy — Long Island Speech — is the largest privately-owned insurancebased speech pathology practice on the east coast and the largest insurance-based Myofunctional practice nationwide. Her large and exceptionally trained staff treat 1,700+ sessions per week via teletherapy and in-person and that number continues to grow.

Janine Stiene has modified and enhanced the training and treatment for patients who need Myofunctional Therapy with her S.P.O.T (Speech Pathologist Oromyofunctional Therapy) program which takes a holistic approach to remediate a tongue thrust and has a proven track record of success.

Q&A What are some things you’re looking forward to in your life or career?

I would love to spend my career building awareness, educating, and changing the way that we are intervening with individuals with speech and language delays and disabilities.

Early intervention is the model that we preach however due to limiting funding, insurance policy limitations, and an overall lack of understanding we are missing out on the opportunity for early identification and treatment and therefore missing out on the opportunity to have the biggest impact and difference with these patients.

Diane Ziems has been in the senior living field for over 14 years and is currently the executive director at Atria Glen Cove. In this role, she leads the development and implementation of all strategies and tactics across sales and operational departments to be consistent with Atria’s quality and service standards.

Her leadership philosophy is summed up by the fact that she does not ask her employees to do anything that she would not do herself. During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, she led her team by example and by pitching in with waiting tables, housekeeping, working the reception desk, and driving the bus. Her high customer and employee satisfaction scores reflect her commitment to delivering on promises.

Prior to joining Atria Senior Living, she was the director of operations for Dominican Village Assisted Living from 2009 to 2020 where she managed day-to-day operations and directly oversaw all 12 departments and directors. She also held the positions of case manager supervisor and resident supervisor at Dominican Village. Before entering the senior living industry, she worked for Little Flower and Family Services as a foster care/adoption case manager.

Her honors and awards include NCAL Case Manager of the Year 2016, Dominican Village Employee of the Month in 2011, and Girl Scout Leader of the Year for 2009 and 2010. Ziems currently serves as the executive board member of the Gold Coast Business Association and the Glen Cove Culinary Delights Event Committee.

A graduate of Dowling College with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, she is also the proud mom of three college-aged children.

Dr. Alain Zilkha is a board-certified radiologist by the American Board of Radiology. He received his M.D. degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 1994.

Dr. Zilkha performed his internship at the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, his radiology residency at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York, and Fellowship at the Beth Israel Medical Center in Body Imaging with special focus on Ultrasound and CT Guided Biopsies as well as other interventional procedures.

NORTHWELL HEALTH Maureen White is the executive vice president and chief nurse executive for Northwell Health, the largest private employer in New York State overseeing 23 hospitals. She is responsible for developing and implementing the health system’s overall strategic plan and operational standards for patient care services. Maureen is also the director of the Northwell Health Institute for Nursing, which focuses on nursing education, nursing research, the creation of healthy work environments, and the development of future nursing leaders within the health system. In 2021, White was appointed the Margaret Crotty and Rory Riggs Clinical Chair in Nursing. In 2015, White received the New York University College of Nursing Distinguished Nursing Colleague Award for Contributions to the Profession of Nursing. In 2012, White was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. In 2015, she was inducted as a Distinguished Fellow of the National Academies of Practice (NAP). She was the recipient of the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) Mentorship Award in 2011. In 2008, White was the Humanitarian Partner of the Year recipient from Queensborough Community College.

She was also a faculty member at the Institute of Healthcare Improvement from 2002 through 2005, focusing on workforce development initiatives. In 2004, White received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Molloy College and in 2000 she was recognized by AONE, receiving the prestigious Department Wide Innovations Award.

White holds two undergraduate degrees from Molloy College and an MBA from Fordham University.

Is Covid over?

COVID, like the flu, will never be over. But we certainly have more tools in which to address this virus than we did when it first presented itself. The hardest part of dealing with COVID when it was first made known was that we had no playbook in which to draw from. But now we have medications and have a greater understanding of how best to treat this virus so the days of COVID uncertainty are certainly over and now we just need to accept that COVID will always be present

What advice do you have for future medical personnel, especially after the past few years?

It is important to wake up each day, tell yourself you will do your best, and treat others with respect and dignity. You must have humor and a support system to have a long career in healthcare and in senior living. Atria communities are home and so much more for our residents, so our jobs — at the core — are to help our residents live life to the fullest. I believe in giving seniors the opportunity to continue to be who they want to be. So my advice is to truly know your residents and customers.

Q&A What inspired you to be in the position you’re in?

My father - a neuroradiologist. Early in my dad’s career, he worked at the level one trauma center, Nassau County Medical Center. Like everyone else, he took a call. One Saturday afternoon, he was called in and I asked if I could go with him and he agreed. We drove to the hospital where there was a MVA and a patient who needed an angiogram. We walked through what seemed like 100 hallways to the angiography suite where he was given the patient’s history and the questions the ER physician needed answered. I noticed how much respect everyone in the room had for him, they all followed his instructions and the study was completed. On this one afternoon, I came to realize that he was a big deal and my level of respect for him expanded.

What advice do you have for future medical personnel, especially after the past few years?

You have chosen the best job available. You will make a difference. You will be respected. You will change lives for the better. You will be challenged everyday. You will learn for the rest of your life and become a better physician everyday.

Do you have inspiring moments from your work?

It was a Friday morning after a very long week and I went to a bagel store in West Islip. The line was long and in front of me was a mom with her daughter in a stroller. The mom picked up her order and as she passed me, she asked «Excuse me, are you a radiologist?» I replied that I was. She then motioned to her adorable daughter and said, «You made her possible.» She had a hysterosalpingogram in my office and got pregnant four weeks later. She made my day. I felt very proud. No other job can make you feel this way.

Nicole Drey is a licensed master social worker and certified clinical trauma professional at New Horizon Counseling Center in Nassau County, New York. Her expertise is in family and child therapy, children with special needs, individuals and families impacted by rare medical conditions, and promoting healthy emotional development. Drey addresses the unique psychosocial needs of children living with rare diseases and disabilities. She has a passion for influencing mental health policy and advocating for the needs of families and children in diverse and underserved populations. Drey is an adjunct instructor and doctoral student at Sacred Heart University where her research interests include rare genetic diseases and the psychosocial impact of these disorders, policy for genetic testing and treatments, equal access, and disability accommodations in various settings. Drey is a 2022 recipient of the NYS Office of Mental Health “What’s Great in Our State” highlighting her commitment and dedication to children’s mental health. She is a special education parent advocate in New York assisting children who require accommodations in a school setting. Drey is a Rare Disease Legislative Advocate that collaborates with top physicians in the field of rare diseases to promote advancement for equitable development of and access to lifesaving diagnoses, treatments, and cures through legislation and policy.

Paula Zweig-Cohn is a true role model and provides a sense of calm no matter the circumstance. She is a verifiable expert in infection control and prevention and is instrumental in helping to keep our patients and staff safe. This is accomplished by being thoughtful, analyzing the data, and providing clear direction. Her previous experience as a NICU nurse manager enables her to foster mutual respect and interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as to motivate everyone around her to achieve better outcomes for themselves and for the patients and families of Mount Sinai South Nassau. She is responsive to the needs of others 24 hours a day seven days a week. She encourages the staff to critically think and problem-solve both individually and collectively as part of the team.

She promotes and enhances the image of nursing within the organization, the community, and the profession. Mount Sinai South Nassau is truly grateful for her years of nursing service.

Q&A Is Covid over?

Unfortunately, no. We will have to learn to live with this virus for the foreseeable future.

What is hoped is that COVID-19 will enter a more manageable phase. Interventions such as vaccination, antivirals, and masking will hopefully prevent healthcare systems from being overwhelmed.

What inspired you to be in the field and position that you’re in?

After many years as a nurse leader and clinical nurse specialist in the field of neonatal nursing, I pivoted to infection prevention to continue to promote health and safety for patients and staff.

As director of infection prevention at Mount Sinai South Nassau, I have advised and guided the organization on strategies to keep patients and staff safe. This has never been more challenging than during the last two plus years of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this position I have utilized my abilities of the head and heart-to thoughtfully determine what is the best course of action, coupled with compassion. Infection preventionists have the unique ability to create calm out of chaos, utilizing data to promote best practices for patient care while understanding the challenges of frontline staff.

How has Covid created challenges in 2021? How did you overcome it?

The challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic have been many. As a novel coronavirus, there were, and continue to be many unknowns. Infection prevention was tasked with navigating the ever changing guidance from the CDC and New York State Dept of Health. This led to confusion and frustration among staff. We supported staff by talking to them and listening to their concerns.

Videos were produced to show staff how to safely put on and take off PPE. It was important to support and reassure staff that we were taking care of them while they took care of patients.
