Legislator Mulé hosts National Night Out at Baldwin H.S. News briefs

Nassau County Legislator

Debra Mulé partnered with New York State Senator Kevin Thomas, the Nassau County Police Department, Baldwin Fire Department, Nassau County Police Benevolent Association, and community stakeholders to celebrate National Night Out at Baldwin Senior High School on Tuesday, Aug. 1.

National Night Out events were held in communities across America to promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.National Night Out’s goal is to enhance relationships between law enforcement and communities by bringing police and residents together in a fun and welcoming atmosphere. To add to the festivities, the Nassau County Police Department and Baldwin Fire Department invited attendees to tour their trucks and take pictures.

“During the last 40 years, National Night Out events have consistently highlighted the importance of community and the relationships we build with our first responders as they work to keep our communities safe,” Mulé said. “It was a pleasure to partner with Senator Thomas, the Nassau County Police Department and our local first responders to celebrate the unity that we cherish and share.”

Baldwin native graduates from Hamilton College

Nkosi Cooper, of North Baldwin, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hamilton College on Sunday, May 21, in a Commencement ceremony concluding the college’s 211th year.

Cooper, a sociology major, completed a thesis titled “How Did They Do It? The Path to Upward Mobility for Underprivileged African Americans.”

Michelle J. Howard, the first female four-star admiral and chair of the 2020-22 Congressional Naming Commission, was awarded an honorary degree and delivered the Commencement address.

In her remarks, Howard shared anecdotes from her time before and after active duty, all tied to this life lesson: the call to the common good is for all of us. “As your namesake [Alexander Hamilton] would say, the first duty is justice,” she told the Class of 2023.

Hamilton’s 500 graduates now join an alumni body of more than 23,000, many of whom have made important contributions to business, the professions, government, and the arts.
