Baldwin mom, daughter collab on kid’s book

Little did Sandhyia Gosine, 41, imagine that those night when her daughter, Isabella Brielle Ramcharitar, 9, would get bored of the same ol’ nighttime books, that her own made-up tales would ever make it to paperback—and even less that her daughter would be the illustrator!

Gosine self-published “Superhero Within Me: Uni: Never Give Up on Your Dream!” in Amazon in December 2021; however, this book was not a brief endeavor.

She was born in Trinidad, grew up in Valley Stream and only moved to SANDHYIA Baldwin four GOSINE, years ago. As a author full-time operations manager of an audiology practice, Gosine often wondered where her childhood dreams of becoming a pilot went.

“Girls are not pilots,” and “Why would you want to be a pilot? It’s so dangerous,” young Gosine was often told. However, she found solace and validation in superhero narratives, especially those of Superman.

Drawing these connections between childhood dreams and the superhero universe, as well as watching her daughter overcome some hard mathematical obstacles because “she believed in herself,” Gosine realized there is space for a book that encourages child exploration and empowerment.

“Somewhere between using towels as capes and washing those very towels on laundry day we manage to give up on mastering our super hero abilities,” Gosine wrote in her book.

DRAWING THESE CONNECTIONS between childhood dreams and the superhero universe, as well as watching her daughter overcome some hard mathematical obstacles because “she believed in herself,” Gosine realized there is space for a book that encourages child exploration and empowerment.

However, she needed an illustrator.

“I wrote it down and was waiting for an illustrator for years,” Gosine told the Herald. It wasn’t until Gosine saw Isabella’s sketches that something clicked in her mind. She hadn’t considered before that her inspiration for her book, her daughter, would ultimately become her collaborator as well.

Gosine recognized that there are some differences between her and her daughter, “I grew up very tomboy, and she’s a girly girl.” Nonetheless, she realized that this project provided an opportunity to bridge

“For her it was awesome, and every time I’d come home from work she was drawing sketches,” Gosine stated of Isabella’s experience. As for what she got from this, Gosine said, “I appreciated the fact that [Isabella] wanted to make my dream come true.”

The book is 90 percent fiction, Gosine confirmed, but it taps into the universal experience of seeing the superhero or unknown strengths within our everyday lives. She wants kids to know that they have the freedom and power to explore different possibilities for their future.

“I come from a culture where parents expected you to be either a doctor or a lawyer, but what about what you enjoy doing?”

Gosine told the Herald. Therefore, she’s looking forward to make the book a series about “getting over your obstacles, getting over nay-sayers, those who may not want you to chase your dream,” but not with the same illustrator.

Gosine wants to partner with different children and tailor the book to their dreams. She stated, “Whoever is the inspiration, then that kid will illustrate the book, and I want that for every child other than my daughter.”

For example, Gosine has been working with her niece who wants to become a marine biologist and brainstorming a scientist-Aquaman angle to the story, in other words, “relaying jobs and real stuff to superhero.”

Gosine also founded Gosinergy, a New York non-profit that matches teens with mentors, such as neuroscientist, doctors and television producers. She said this all started with girls in mind, but it’s for everyone, it’s “a day in the life…career day on a higher level.”

Long Island’s business leaders and elected officials gathered at the Bethpage Heritage Club for a breakfast of Spanish frittata, home fries and fruit at the Long Island Association’s “What’s New in Washington” event featuring Democratic Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer on March 4.

Cohen introduced Schumer, reminiscing about his days as the senator’s 23-yearold direct report in the Long Island office with his deputy at the time and current LIA’s Vice-President Stacey Sikes.

13.5 billion to hospitals across the state and supporting vaccine rollouts, making Long Island boast one of the highest rates of vaccinations in the state.

However, he identified how state and local aid was missing in the Covid relief package, which was later passed in the American Relief Package. Over $1 billion was provided to local governments, with $397 million going to Nassau, $286 million to Suffolk, and $84 million to Hempstead.

Schumer also addressed the pandemic’s effects on restaurants since “the places that suffered the most was where people couldn’t gather.” With the Restaurant Revitalization Plan, which the state government is trying to renew, provided $270

million to Long Island restaurants, including Baldwin’s own Canal House.

The bipartisan infrastructure bill drew applause during the breakfast, as it supports improvements in commutes through funding for the LIRR, the Penn Station Rehab and $11.5 billion for the Long Island Expressway. “We will see more construction here on Long Island than we have ever seen here before,” exclaimed Schumer.

Then talk turned from pandemic to the environment and science. Schumer listed various environmentally-charged projects, including addressing the water contamination in Bethpage, Farmingdale, and Massapequa, stopping the sale of

Schumer also discussed the bipartisanship in support of the Ukraine government, lauding President Joe Biden’s “tough as nails” sanctions, as well as pension relief programs and the $9 billion allocated to state school districts as a pump to our economy.

Community service programs with the library Interested in being kind and earning community service credits? Take part in the Baldwin Public Library’s ongoing community service programs. Students can help rebuild through a team effort.

Create art for a good cause! This year’s challenge is “World Needs”, which focuses on clean oceans, humanitarian aid for refugees, hunger relief, overcoming bias and arts activism. For every poster created during this program, the Bezos Family Foundation will donate $5 to programs meeting global needs. This program will be ongoing until May. Students can also let their voices be heard in library decisions in their TAG program. Lastly, from April to June take on the Recycle Challenge! Bring bottles and cans to your local supermarket, and take a picture of your receipt. For every 10 bottles or cans you recycle, you will receive an hour of community service.

Math Club competes in Continental Math League The Baldwin Middle School Math Club, which proudly made its debut this year, is already off to a strong start! The 8th grade team is currently ranked first in the state in the Euclidean Division of the Continental Mathematics League (CML) – a national problem solving competition that requires students to complete timed, written tests.

In addition, Baldwin Middle School student, Ethan Questelles, has been ranked on a national level with his perfect individual score of 18 out of 18. He is the only student from New York to place nationally.

The Math Club has been participating in the competition since November under the guidance of teacher advisors, Ms. Jamie Abbi-Handler and Ms. Rosemarie Ms. Socci.

“It is an honor to work with such moti-

vated and dedicated learners. All of our Math Club members have put forth an exemplary effort, and we are delighted to celebrate their accomplishments,” said Ms. Abbi-Handler and Ms. Socci.

The students have partaken in three meets so far. The competition encompasses a total of five meets with six challenging word problems on each test. After each meet, advisors grade the students’ responses and then report them to CML. CML then ranks both team and individual scores. All CML experiences are designed to maximize student learning and improve their problem-solving capabilities.

Baldwin Union Free School District is one of five districts from New York State to compete this year. The final meet will take place in March, after which, the results and winners will be announced.

Masks optional, respect certain

On Wednesday, March 2, in Baldwin School District, and New York State as a whole, Gov. Kathy Hochul lifted the mask mandate in schools (and school busses), effectively making masks optional for students, faculty, and staff.

On Monday, Feb. 28 the school district announced that they cannot guarantee nor enforce that students choosing to wear a mask will. They made a call to parents to dialogue with their children and decide what is best per family unit.

Sup. Dr. Shari L. Camhi, however, emphasized, “We do not expect, nor will we tolerate, disrespect for individual decisions made by families.”

Indeed, the first day of the mask optional policy went without a glitch. “It

has been a positive experience,” said Camhi. “Our Baldwin community has been very supportive of one another’s decision.”

Baldwin parent Rachel Silberstein Guarneri echoed the district’s sentiments. “I think the school did a good job talking to the children about respecting each other’s choices and preparing them, she said.

Silberstein Guarneri also clarified that her children were still masked and that “they were very relieved to see a lot of other kids masked as well.”

According to the New York State Department of Health, the mask optional guideline has its exceptions. One significant change is related to the response to close contacts, removing the exclusion for all persons regardless of vaccination status.

Baldwin repeats as Nassau county champs

Two years after Baldwin celebrated a county title, the joy was short-lived due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic that ultimately canceled the Long Island Class AA finals a week later.

The Bruins will now get their longawaited opportunity to play for L.I. supremacy and a trip to the state championships after a 55-44 victory against Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK in last Saturday night’s Nassau AA title game at Hofstra’s Mack Sports Complex. The celebration was that much more meaningful after there were no playoffs held during last year’s truncated season in which Baldwin was limited to just four games due to the pandemic.

“This is my seventh county championship, but this one is special because of

COVID and what these kids have been through for the past two years,” said longtime Baldwin head coach Darius Burton.

“They worked their butt off with the masks in the gym and they just believed right from the beginning.”

The county crown advances Baldwin to this Saturday’s Long Island Class AA championship against Half Hollow Hills East back at Hofstra for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.

Baldwin has now won six of the last 10 Nassau Class AA titles.

“It makes it extra special,” said Baldwin senior center Jacob Oka of winning a county title after not having a chance to compete in the postseason last year during his first year on varsity. “It gave us even more motivation.”

Baldwin (21-1) seized control early in jumping out to a 26-14 halftime lead and led by as many as 19 in the third quarter.

After seven straight JFK points cut the

lead to 42-34 with five minutes left, the Bruins stepped up out of a timeout beginning with a Gerrard Beaubrun put-back off a missed three pointer followed by a Joshua Petion fastbreak layup as part of a game-ending 13-2 run.

Oka had a monster all-around game in the paint with 12 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Petition also had 12 points while senior guard Jamir Stewart recorded 10 as part of Baldwin’s balanced scoring effort. Kadeem Ramsay and Beaubrun each netted eight.

“They have bought in all season that it’s not about our leading scorer and that we do this collectively,” Burton said.

“That is why I think it is hard to prepare for us.”

A strout defense also keyed the county title with Baldwin limited JFK to just six field goals in the first half. Saturday marked the 15th time this season the Bru-

ins have held an opponent under 50 points. Baldwin defeated the Hawks in two regular-season meetings by 50-42 and 59-41 scores.

Baldwin will next look to capture the program’s first L.I. crown since 2016 against Half Hollow Hills East, a team the Bruins knocked off 70-55 in a non-league matchup Jan. 16. The Bruins have had a nearly unblemished record this season with their only loss coming at hands of New York City catholic power Saint.

Riding a 15-game winning streak, Baldwin will next look to earn the Long Island championship it missed out battling for in 2020. Oka, a senior captain, said the team has far bigger goals though which would involve capturing the school’s first ever state championship.

“The goal is states and winning it all,” Oka said. “This is just the beginning.”

Baldwin junior Katelyn Simpson not only had the toughest defensive assignment in Saturday’s Nassau Class AA girls’ basketball championship game — she also made the biggest offensive play on a day when points came at a premium.

Simpson made a quick move from the top of the key and converted a driving layup with 1:06 remaining to put the top-seeded Lady Bruins ahead for good in a hard-fought 31-29 victory over No. 2 Syosset at Hofstra’s Mack Sports Complex.

“We put in a lot of work to get here and it’s really exciting,” said Simpson, who guarded Yale-bound Lilah Grubman for most of the afternoon and held Syosset’s star to five points. “We knew it was going to be a tough game,” she added. “We’ve been practicing three hours every day and watched a lot of film. We were ready and I’m so happy we seized the moment.”

Simpson’s layup gave Baldwin a 29-28 lead in a roller coaster fourth quarter that featured four lead changes. Freshman Payton Dulin and Dallysshya Moreno, its lone starting senior, each sank a free throw in the final 22 seconds to stretch the advantage to 31-28. The Braves had the final possession of regulation and a chance to force overtime when they drew a foul on a three-point attempt with 0.1 second left. However, a miss on the first foul shot ultimately sealed the Bruins’ eighth consecutive county title.

“We’ve got a pretty young group and I’m just so proud of them,” Baldwin head coach Tom Catapano said. “It was quite a battle. Obviously, it wasn’t high scoring, but it was tight the whole way and that’s a really good team we found a way to beat.”

Dulin was the game’s lone double-digit scorer with 10 points. Moreno added seven, Simpson six, and senior Paris Nosworthy and sophomore

Renelle Grannum chipped in four apiece. Jillian Oresky led the Braves with 10 points. Grubman fouled out late in the fourth quarter.

Baldwin (16-4), which outscored Syosset 14-4 from the foul line, advances to face Suffolk champion Longwood (21-1) in the Long Island Class AA championship/Southeast Regional Final at Eastport-South Manor High School next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

The Lady Bruins and Lions were slated to meet March 14, 2020 in the LIC before the Covid19 forced the cancellation of the remainder of the season. There were also no playoffs last winter due to the pandemic.

“It’s kind of fitting it’s us and Longwood two years later,” Catapano said. “We have a tremendous amount of respect for that program. I’ve seen them twice live this season and we’re going to have another battle on our hands.”

Baldwin averaged 60 points over 19 previous games leading up to Saturday’s county final with a season low of 46 but was unable to generate any offensive momentum. Syosset led 9-6 midway through the second quarter as both teams struggled to get shots to drop.

“There are always days when shots aren’t going to fall and we saw that today with both teams,” Catapano said. “For us, it’s always defense first. We didn’t get many baskets off transition, but we got to the line and made foul shots.”

The Lady Bruins led 5-4 after the opening quarter, 14-11 at halftime, and 20-17 after three quarters. Dulin hit a clutch trey early in the fourth for a 23-19 lead before Syosset clawed back.

“Payton is a special talent,” Catapano said of Dulin, who scored seven straight points for the Bruins spanning the third and fourth quarters.

“We run sets through her and she has all the tools,” he added. “She has a chance to become one of the best to play at Baldwin.”

GOP nominates Lee Zeldin for governor

On March 1 the GOP announced their nomination of 1st District Congressman Lee Zeldin for New York state governor and former NYPD Deputy Inspector Alison Esposito for lieutenant. governor on the second day of the 2022 GOP Convention in Garden City Hotel, after over 85 percent of the county Republican delegations voted for Zeldin.

“I want people to feel like they’re back in control of the government again…this is a rescue mission to save our state,” said Zeldin, a former senator, attorney, and Army Reserve major, who gained national attention by defending former President Donald Trump amid the 2019 Ukraine scandal impeachment hearings and contesting the 2020 election results.

Zeldin stated that his day-one priority as governor would be ending all Covid mandates, re-employing anyone who lost their jobs to these, ending the masking “child abuse” in schools and strengthening parental choice. He also talked about “Backing the Blue,” enacting voter ID for elections, keeping zoning control local and standing with the Ukraine.

County Executive Bruce Blakeman nominated Zeldin, urging Long Island residents to turn out to vote, stating, “My whole life I would’ve loved to be governor of this state, but I’m not the right candidate — this is a moment in history that we have the opportunity to nominate someone that is the right person, at the right place, at the right time.”

Three other GOP candidates were seeking the nomination for governor: former Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, Andrew Giuliani, son of Rudy Giuliani who served in Trump’s White House, and million-

fear in their eyes, but this is a different fear…the fear in the eyes now was of them losing their jobs and potentially their freedom,” she exclaimed.

Esposito also criticized critical race theory, Covid mandates and “other shenanigans” regarding the lack of parental “choice” in schools. Other convention speakers echoed Esposito’s and Blakeman’s concerns, also adding high taxes, corrupt Democratic politicians, and undocumented immigrants.

“New York Republicans are putting our money where our mouth is and proving to the people of this state that we are serious about ending the public safety crisis created by the Democrat Party,” said NYGOP Chairman Nick Langworthy in a Feb. 23 statement.

Republicans also nominated global financier Paul Rodriguez, former Newsmax host Joe Pinion and litigation attorney Michael Henry to challenge Comptroller Thomas Dinapoli, Sen. Charles Shumer and Attorney General Leticia James, respectively.

Republicans, however, have a historical uphill battle in statewide elections, where Democratic voters outnumber registered Republicans by a two-to-one margin. A Republican has not won a state race 20 years, since George E. Pataki secured a third term as governor in 2002, after defeating Democratic Mayor Mario Cuomo.

Pataki spoke on the first day of the 2022 GOP Convention, identifying woke culture as the Democratic party’s weakness and saying of President Joe Biden, “We need a Republican Congress to hold this president accountable, we need a Republican Senate to hold this leader accountable, and to get the United States headed in the right direction.”

The 2022 midterm state primary elections for governor, senate and congressional offices will be held on June 28.

The most recent invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation began on February 24, 2022 – an escalation of a conflict that began in 2014 with Russia’s annexation of Crimea and alleged support of pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. This expanded war has largely been waged on heavily populated cities, with Ukraine reporting extensive civilian casualties at the hands of Russian forces.

“Ukraine is showing to the entire world the lengths that a free people will go to defend their democracy and their homeland,” said Councilman Christopher Carini. “I am proud to live in a community with hardworking Ukrainian neighbors, and I will always stand with our brothers and sisters in Ukraine as they struggle against evil.”

The Nassau County Legislature voted unanimously on Monday, Feb. 28 to appropriate an additional $2 million in New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation grant funds toward supporting Nassau County’s S.E.P.T.I.C. (Septic Environmental Program to Improve Cleanliness) program.

Since its launch in late 2020, the S.E.P.T.I.C. program has provided eligible Nassau County homeowners and small businesses that discharge less than 1,000 gallons a day of wastewater up to $20,000 in grants toward the installation of environmentally sound alternative wastewater treatment systems to replace existing systems that may be failing or otherwise outdated.

impressed that your lawyer is concerned that the issues you described are complicated. I’m used to everyone who doesn’t regularly address plans and applications having a simplistic view of the process. It isn’t uncommon for owners asking building departments or their lawyers about what is needed and then telling onte eeper me they only need a “sketch” to make an application. The word sketch makes the whole issue sound simpler, faster and cheaper, but is far from the reality. If a sketch were provided, it would only be for something like a fence permit, where some building departments let the owner write on their property survey.

What the building department forgets to tell you is that surveys are legal documents that usually have a statement on them that it’s illegal to alter them. I’m sure surveyors wouldn’t include that statement if they didn’t mean it, but that statement is all too often completely ignored.

Your attorney is correct that even moving a fence so the survey shows the fence on the property line is complicated. I rarely hear of neighbors volunteering to move a fence that has been there for many years. It usually sets up a bad relationship when new neighbors move in and start asking to up-heave their neighbor’s lives.

Finished basements are no less of a dilemma, since your municipality, like most, won’t allow bedrooms or kitchens in basements. Many people put these rooms in, waiting to see if anyone ever says a word, which is why I have to tell people their neighbors up and down the street may have a kitchen and bedrooms in the basement, but none of them are actually legal. I know that isn’t what you wanted to hear, especially since you felt the pressure to go into a contract for the house.

I’ve often said to people buying a house that I wish it was part of the transaction, as common as a home inspection, often called an “engineer’s report” (even though most people inspecting the house aren’t engineers), that someone with code and zoning knowledge should examine the premises and survey to address potential problems before you go into contract. e live in a world where sports matchups of almost any kind are totally unpredictable. Whether it’s football, baseball, basketball or hockey, a game is frequently decided in the final minutes or seconds. In the legal world, many cases can go either way as well, depending on the law or the facts.

But there’s one place where, it’s safe to say, in many key cases, the score will be 6-3. I refer to the United States Supreme Court.

In the next four JERRY months, the court will be making KREMER decisions on such topics as abortion, affirmative action, immigration, gun rights and congressional redistricting. You don’t need a scorecard to figure out what the results are likely to be, because several of the nine justices have telegraphed their views to the outside world long before the cases will be argued in front of them.

A look back at history shows that this isn’t the first court majority whose legal

views were well known to the outside world. From 1953 to 1969, the court was led by Chief Justice Earl Warren. Unlike any before it, the Warren Court dramatically expanded civil rights, civil liberties and the powers of the court itself. It ended racial segregation and state-sanctioned prayer in public schools, ensured equal representation in state legislatures and paved the way for the legalization of abortion.

The Warren Court was one of the more liberal courts in judicial history.

In contrast, the court led by Chief Justice William Rehnquist, from 1986 to 2005, moved to the right, giving states more power, striking down provisions of the Violence Against Women Act and, in 2000, famously ruling that George W. Bush had been elected president. To the surprise of many, the Rehnquist Court upheld Roe v. Wade, which granted women the right to have an abortion.

Given the fact that this court had among its members Antonin Scalia, Sandra Day O’Connor, Clarence Thomas and Anthony Kennedy, it’s no wonder that it was unpredictable when it handed down rulings on cases with strong nationwide

interest.

The current court is headed by Chief Justice John Roberts, but it is dominated by five justices who have already made clear where they stand on cases already argued and yet to come. Last September, Justice Amy Coney Barrett, speaking at the University of Louisiana, said that the court is “not a bunch of partisan hacks.” She warned that “justices must be hyper-vigilant to make sure that they are not letting their personal biases creep into their decisions.”

She made that speech after voting to uphold a Texas law that bars abortions after six weeks.

Anyone who believes that Justices Barrett and Thomas are independent thinkers is mistaken. In 2006, Barrett, then a law professor at Notre Dame, signed a full-page ad in the South Bend (Ind.) Tribune by St. Joseph County Right to Life, stating that it was “time to put an end to the barbaric legacy of Roe v. Wade and restore laws that protect the lives of unborn children.” At her congressional confirmation hearing, she waffled, saying only that Roe v.

Wade had been affirmed many times.

Mississippi law prohibiting abortions after 15 weeks, you don’t have to guess where Barrett will stand.

The court’s longest-serving justice is Clarence Thomas. According to The New Yorker, Thomas’s wife, Virginia, is involved with a number of organizations that file briefs before the court opposing affirmative action and abortion, favoring gun rights and offering strong opinions on many other current cases. One of the cases now before the court is a suit by the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association to overturn a New York City law that places limits on carrying guns outside the home. Thomas’s expected opinion, to throw out the law, won’t help Mayor Eric Adams in his efforts to curb gun violence.

During my career as an attorney, I have always had the greatest respect for our judiciary and the court system in general. But it saddens me to think that some of the most consequential cases in our lifetime are destined to be decided by that 6-3 margin.

As the pandemic pushes past two years, where are we?

N

othing like the threat of World War III, and a red-hot nuclear reactor, to focus one’s attention. After more than two years of obsessively parsing the news about the global pandemic ravaging the world, we now have an escalating war in Eastern Europe to distract us. The invasion of Ukraine by Russia has eclipsed the grim coverage of people sick and dying of a runaway virus. Now we have 24/7 coverage of people fleeing and dying in a firestorm let loose RANDI by a runaway KREISS Vladimir Putin.

Irony abounds.

We were blindsided by Covid and blindsided by Russia, although there was plenty of evidence in both cases that something bad was coming down. In this moment, the two global events are creating a kind of whipsaw effect, with our battered psyches in the middle.

In the past few weeks, as Covid restrictions loosened, I wasn’t ready to join the party. It seems that very young

children and older people are still vulnerable to getting sick, possibly very sick. The difficult piece of this is that the protocol for any one individual is, well, individual. Americans aren’t good at nuance, but that’s what we need for now. How much risk do I take, and when and why?

When will it be safe to go to a wedding or a funeral?

Many of us have stopped thinking at all about the coronavirus, because we’re creatures of the news cycle, and the news has moved on to Ukraine. It creates our reality: what we think about, what we talk about and what we worry about.

For many of us, the constant stream of “breaking news,” whether it was about the pandemic for the past two years, or now, the Russian invasion, is a nonstop anxiety machine. The day 24/7 news became a thing was the day we enslaved ourselves and our sense of well-being to an outside force. Sometimes the coverage feeds on itself, reporters interviewing other reporters, and anchors hosting the same military talking heads all day and all night long, the same “news” repeated again and again.

I am rarely in a situation these days, whether out with a friend or gathering with family, that someone isn’t beeped and dinged with “breaking news.” This is the pandemic that will do us in.

In just these two weeks, we have traded our addiction to Covid news for minute-to-minute coverage of one country blowing another country to bits. Wherever I look, people are staring, transfixed, at their phones, like players in a dystopian science fiction story come true.

As we move into the third year of the pandemic (which clearly is not over and the first weeks of the Russian onslaught, we need to ground ourselves.

That means time away from the news.

As we move toward spring and the hope of warmer weather, we need to get up and out again, walking or biking or driving to someplace with open spaces. The signs of spring are always life-affirming, but you won’t find them on Fox or CNN. Get to the beach or walk around the block, and before you do, leave your buddy at home. That would be the phone, which can survive very nicely on its own while you live for a while in your own

Refreshed, we can carry on through this rough patch as we figure out how to stay safe and how to think about this war in Eastern Europe. We do not travel light. We carry the memory of nearly one million Americans who died of Covid.

We ventured out the other evening to sit in an outside tented area of a restaurant. It wasn’t perfect. It felt strange to wait for food, and I was impatient. This isn’t a new normal, I realize. There will never be a new normal. It will be something else, and we aren’t there yet.

As we begin Year Three of the pandemic and continue Month One of the Ukraine invasion, we must turn off the noise and find some quiet space to think.

Many of us need to restore our faith in the future. I grew up just expecting everything to be fine, and then there were the assassinations and the Vietnam War. Today teenagers are worrying about a draft or another pandemic. Comfort does not come from the media or any outside source. It comes from within, in its own time, when we find reason to believe again in the possibility of a peaceful future in a healthy world.

Sunshine Week is all about open government

W

hen James Madison assembled fellow members of his Virginia delegation in 1787, few of them knew what was up his sleeve.

What they did know was that the Articles of Confederation — the law of the land since 1781 — simply wasn’t working.

Madison surprised all of them, revealing that they weren’t fixing the Articles, but replacing them.

The Virginia Plan, as it was called, would become the blueprint for what followed, earning Madison the moniker “Father of the Constitution.” But the man who would become the fourth president of the United States is actually responsible for something far greater: the Bill of Rights, the 10 constitutional amendments that guarantee a number of freedoms like that of religion, assembly — and the press.

That’s why journalists celebrate Madison’s birthday — March 16 — as part of “Sunshine Week,” a national initiative created by the American Society of News Editors to educate all of us about the importance of open government, and how dangerous excessive and unnecessary secrecy from our leaders can be. It serves as a reminder that government agencies should be accessible and accountable to their constituents, and should encourage input from that very public.

To the Editor: It is ironic that our Republican and Democratic officials claim they are protecting the environment and our “suburban quality of life” by opposing Gov. Kathy Hochul’s affordable housing plan in the 2022-23 state budget.

Are our elected officials fighting to close and clean the Brookhaven Landfill, which has been dumping toxins into the predominantly Black and Latino community of North Bellport since 1974? Are Long Island representatives decrying the proposed zoning changes and a Winters Bros. plan to bring in 6,000 tons of garbage every day, right next to the aforementioned landfill?

Where was the opposition while developers constructed luxury condominiums throughout Glen Cove and Glenwood Landing, further congesting traffic?

We cannot cherry-pick when the environ-

More often than not, we hear about media organizations — like the Heralds — lifting these veils of secrecy. But this isn’t a privilege of a select few; open records are a right for everyone. Sunshine Week is recognized each year by open-government advocates, local libraries, schools and other civic-minded organizations, which discuss government accessibility through news stories, opinion columns, blogs, web pages, seminars, editorial cartoons and even paid advertisements.

Without open government, much of what you see in these pages simply wouldn’t be possible. Crime reporting?

No. In-depth investigative pieces? Not a chance. Court proceedings? Legislative sessions? City council hearings? Board of education meetings? Only what leaders would choose to share.

Laws mandating open meetings and open records give all of us the right to delve deeply into the activities of local, county, state and federal officials, and to draw our own conclusions about whether the people we vote into office are truly doing their jobs representing us.

Despite all this progress toward transparency, there are constant efforts by the very officials mandated to provide this access to instead pull it back into darkness. Florida journalists created what grew into Sunshine Week two decades

ago, when the legislature there looked to pass hundreds of laws that would curtail such transparency.

And there’s still much work to be done closer to home. New York agencies that don’t provide access to information and documents face the threat of lawsuits, but rarely actually suffer through them since few individuals or organization that would file them have the resources to go to court. Other states have created affordable (or even free) arbitration resolution methods. New York isn’t one of them.

But things are changing. Last December, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed into law a measure requiring public hearings on issues in front of select state departments like Education and Environmental Conservation whenever 125 or more people petition state lawmakers for them. It also requires those hearings be held in the evenings and on weekends, allowing more people to attend. The meetings must also be broadcast, and teleconferencing must be an option.

The law goes a long way in implementing new opportunities for meaningful public participation in governmental decision-making. It will do nothing less than help shift the balance of power from the government to the people.

But it’s only a start. There is no such thing as too much transparency when it comes to government. A true democracy is leadership by the people, not a select few.

And it’s the people that must continue to hold those who represent us accountable.

he unfolding situation in Ukraine and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Package. These seemingly unrelated topics help frame the realtime battle between authoritarianism and democracy that is boiling up in the pot of world debate. If we are going to reduce crime, cut taxes and help our troubled schools, we have a lot of work to do to make sure that democracy wins.

Last fall, President Biden told members of Congress that both Russian President Vladimir Putin Tom and Chinese leader Xi Jinping had sUoZZi told him that they “don’t think democracy can accomplish big things in this world of social media and the 24-hour news cycle.”

Russia and China believe that America, and democracies generally, are too divided. They don’t think we can accomplish

big things anymore, and that they can.

Today’s division in Washington, Albany and governments across the country is hurting us. Elected officials pander to their base. The battles waged on Twitter and Facebook seep out into every part of our lives. Cable news talking heads pit Americans against one another, finding wedge issues that make us believe there’s more that divides us than unites us.

Even more concerning are the efforts by our foreign adversaries to sow disinformation and civil unrest using the very platforms that they curtail in their own countries.

Can we still do big things with so much dissent?

A few months ago, we passed the largest ever investment in infrastructure in history — $1.2 trillion — and it was bipartisan. As vice chair of the Problem Solvers Caucus, I helped negotiate this oncein-a-generation infrastructure package.

The bipartisan infrastructure bill is real-life stuff that will rebuild our state and put millions of people to work. When it passed, however, it only received news coverage for a week, at most. It wasn’t one of the most highly viewed posts on social media, and no videos of Biden signing the legislation went viral. But if you ask everyday New Yorkers what they want from their elected officials, they will typically say they “want to see results.”

Pandering to the base, Twitter likes, sound bites and saying outrageous things

to go viral or get booked on cable news shows won’t solve problems or improve people’s lives.

This type of good I speak of is still possible. Working across party lines, Democrats and Republicans, progressives and moderates need to put the good of the people first.

We are at a turning point. Americans — and New Yorkers — are sick and tired of the finger-pointing, the pandering and the division. Our government can do big, important things, and help solve problems to reduce crime, cut taxes, and help transform our troubled schools. But to do that, we must root out those who seek to divide us — those in public office, on social media, on cable news, as well as foreign adversaries who oppose our democracy and wish to sow civil unrest and do us harm.

With our eyes wide open, we can and will succeed, because most of us want the same things: to help people and make the world better.

Career advice for the Cuomos To the Editor: Former gov. Andrew Cuomo has begun using part of his leftover $16 million re-election fund to pay for commercials. He now claims that he has been exonerated of charges that he sexually harassed a number of women.

Andrew and his brother Chris might be better off if they listened to Kenny Rogers’s song “The gambler.”

Rogers sings, “You’ve gotta know … when to fold ’em, know when to walk away …” It is wishful thinking on Andrew Cuomo’s part that he can resume his political career with a simple media blitz.

Both he and Chris should look for honest work. Why not follow in their grandparents’ footsteps and open another family grocery store in Queens? (Chris, who loves working out, could open a gym upstairs.) The brothers have a long history of selling baloney. That makes them perfectly suited for this new occupation.
