Babylon School Board lays out plans for the new school year Superintendent Manza sets goal to reestablish the district’s distinguished alumni award By Alena Berenblatt The Babylon Board of Education is looking ahead to the 2024-2025 school year by welcoming new hires, planning new initiatives, and preparing for the year to come. At its July 8 reorganization and regular business meeting, Schools Superintendent Carisa Manza announced that the district’s new theme for the upcoming school year will be Together We Rise, following up on last year’s theme—Advancing Together. “Based on feedback from the board, faculty, and staff, I can honestly say that we did advance together, through our collective partnership,” said Manza. “We will continue our efforts forward and upward this year.” She added that the board of education and the administrative team will use the new theme to identify shared goals “to propel our educational program to new heights.” Manza also announced plans to resurrect the district’s distinguished alumni award, which she said she hopes to present in October during Babylon Junior Senior High School’s homecoming weekend. According to its mission statement, “The Babylon Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame honors alumni whose deeds and character exemplify outstanding achievement in their life’s work and/or service to their communities. Recipients of this honor will stand as shining examples of Babylon graduates.” The award was established in 2017 and was presented until 2021. To date, 15 Babylon graduates have been

awarded this honor. Nomination forms can be found on the district website. The deadline for nominations is July 31. The school board also: •elected Linda Jurs and Donna Noesi for a second term as president and vice president, respectively. •rescinded the excessing of three teachers in May 2023: elementary teachers Gina Connelly and Hannah McGarvey, and part-time art teacher Cristina Calvano. •recognized four new hires: probationary social worker Taylor Longo, who will replace longtime social worker Elaine DiGiacomo, who retired in June; probationary science teacher for Babylon Junior Senior High School Heather Adamski, and probationary special education teachers for Babylon Junior Senior High School Hana Lepore and Conor Smith. In addition, the board approved Dr. Angela Austin as an administrative consultant working as a director of special education leave replacement. Austin, who has 20 years of experience in special education, holds a bachelor of science degree in special education, a master of science degree in administrative education, and a doctorate in administrative leadership, with a focus on special education, transition planning, and at-risk youth. The next board of education meeting will be on August 19 at 7 p.m. in the Babylon Junior Senior High School Library.
