West Islip senior receives certification as first Haas Mill Operator

West Islip High School senior Camryn Byrnes has received the school’s first Haas Basic Mill Operator Certification.

To complete the certification, Camryn had to complete an online training course, score perfectly on competencies from machine and lab safety, tool setup, material identification, fixture setup, controller interface settings, machine controller operation, precision measurement and machining workflow. She also completed a hands-on practical examination to demonstrate each of those skills to produce a machined part and verify that critical dimensions were within expected tolerances. Upon completion of the exam, not only was Camryn certified as a Haas Basic Mill Operator, but West Islip High School is the first school on Long Island (second in New York State) to provide this certification examination to its students.

Camryn will be attending Lehigh University to study an integrated degree in engineering and arts and sciences this fall. She was the FIRST Robotics team captain this year and is looking to continue working with Haas CNC machines while studying at college.

Babylon School District voters give big ‘okay’ to budget second time around

Poll watchers count the school budget ballots in West Babylon as West Babylon School District attorney Neil Block, Esq. looks on.

The number of voters who headed to the polls in the West Babylon School District last week was strong and steady. And, when all of the votes were counted, the message was strong as well. More than 72 percent of voters gave a thumbs up to the district’s budget by a vote of 1768 to 654.

“I thank the community who came out and voted today,” said Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly, superintendent of schools. “The Board and administration team is elated and extremely happy for the community support for the budget.”

After West Babylon voters rejected the 2024-25 school budget proposal May 21, the school board and administrators worked on a new budget that met New York State tax cap.

The total budget is $136,349,275, or approximately a half million dollars less than the budget voted down May 31, and $6.9 million more than the current budget of $129.4 million. The district will also have a state-aid package of $44.57 million, an increase of $1.8 million over the current year. Under the proposed spending plan, the tax levy, that portion of the budget paid for through real property taxes, would increase by 2.01 percent, to

$84.28 million. The 2023-24 levy was $82.6 million. Figures show that a home assessed at $3,000 will pay an additional $151.29 with Basic Star savings and $113.62 with Enhanced Star savings. A home assessed at $4,000 will pay an annual increase of $173.42 with Enhanced Star savings and $211.09 with Basic Star savings.

The new budget prioritizes the academic and social-emotional health needs of students and maintains full-day kindergarten, school officials said. It will also maintain: •all athletic programs;

Babylon Town honors longtime North Babylon FD members

The Babylon Town Board recently congratulated Peter Alt, Daniel Caroleo and Paul Caroleo for their dedicated service to the North Babylon Fire Company. For the past 50 years, these three men dedicated themselves to protecting the lives and property of their community, said town officials.

“Through thick and thin, through triumphs and tragedies, they have stood steadfast in their commitment to serve and protect, no matter the cost,” said Babylon Town Supervisor Richard Schaffer.” Their dedication is a deep sense of duty and responsibility to the community they love. They do not seek recognition or praise for their actions; they simply do what needs to be done because they believe in the importance of their mission.

Babylon Town Councilman Tony Martinez added “their dedication is a deep sense of duty and responsibility to the community they love. They do not seek recognition or praise for their actions; they simply do what needs to be done because they believe in the importance of community”

Councilman Terence McSweeney who also chairs public safety for the town said, “In a world where selfishness and indifference seem to be on the rise, the example set by these three men serves as a powerful

Pastor Brad Morgan comes home to minister at First Presbyterian Church

Pastor Brad Morgan has just begun at the First Presbyterian Church of Babylon but he is already working on ideas for collaborating and forming connections with the Long Island community he calls home.

Originally from Deer Park, Pastor Morgan was installed as the new minister of the First Presbyterian Church on June 9. He had been the minister at Mount Airy Presbyterian Church in Lambertville, New Jersey, and said that it was God who led him back home to Long Island.

“You see God especially in those moments when things move smoothly,” said the pastor, who explained that he was last on the list for placement because of timing and as a result of a recommendation made on his behalf.

A self-proclaimed “foodie,” Pastor Morgan joked that he came back to Long Island for the food, but also said that he came back to be closer to his family and the people he grew up with. “There’s something about the Long Island community,” he said. “We’re a breed unto our own and it’s the familiarity I have from growing up here that particularly makes the move here so nice.”

He knows first-hand, for example, how much Long Islanders love their lawns and their food, passions he said he wants to incorporate metaphorically and literally into his sermons and teachings at the church. And he’s even hoping to start some cooking classes.

“The great thing about church is in every step along the way there are ‘God Moments,’ whether we are cooking or washing dishes; God is in the every -

day moments,” he said.

Beginning his ministry, Pastor Morgan will be helping to kick off the church’s program for kids on Wednesday nights and will also be working on a new project later in the summer called “Blessing of the Backpacks,” where children in the area can come and have their backpacks blessed before they begin their new school year.

“I’m hoping to engage with the youth through mentorships and outreach,” he noted.

Pastor Morgan served as a chaplain before he became a pastor and is always looking to partner with local organizations offering grief counseling, speaking on pastoral care in urgent settings outside the church to bridge the gap that he said exists.

That way, he said, “the community can see more of the church and the church can be more part of the community.”

Pastor Morgan is a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary, a board-certified Clinical Chaplain and Pastoral Counselor. In addition to his ministry at the First Presbyterian Church of Babylon, he is also the Convener of the West Windsor

chapter of chaplains and is hoping to continue to assist individuals on their journey toward board certification. He is also a member of the Administration and Coordination Leadership Team of the Presbytery of the Highlands.

He and his wife, Tara, have two children, Rowan and Rory, as well as two rescue pups. In his free time, in addition to cooking, he loves camping, concerts, playing his guitar and traveling with his family. One of his goals in life is to show his children all 25 historical lighthouses on Long Island.

West Babylon School District voters give big ‘okay”to new budget

•all art, music and technology programs;

•student clubs, co-curricular programs, robotics and science research;

•average class sizes at all grade levels and •secondary electives and AP offerings.

It reduces the district’s K-8 intervention and lab program and maintains all the reductions from the original budget proposal including 9th grade student health programs.

The new budget plan was put together by the school board and administrators following an extensive review of the district’s expenses and input from the community.

“This is a sound budget and while it does not include everything we would have liked, or wanted, we are confident it will provide a quality education to our students,” said Yiendhy Farrelly, superintendent of schools.

As voters exited the polls on Tues., June 18, quality education was very much on their minds.

“I voted because I believe it is important to keep the programs and education the district delivers to the students,” said resident Jessica Castillo. “It is import for the kids to have all the services they can get and that the district maintains the extra-curricular activities as well, which are also important.”

“I came out to vote because I live here and because I want to make sure I do my share to make sure I support the budget and the students in the district,” said Caroline Spainer who went to the polls with her daughter Joelle, a first-time voter. One voter, who did not want to give his name,

Caroline Spainer, right, came out to vote on the West Babylon School District budget last week with her daughter Joelle, a first-time voter. had another perspective.

“I still have a lot of questions about the money and how the board is handling it,” he said. “I did not vote for the budget the first time—it was outrageous.”

School board president Lucy Campasano, who has been on the board for 30 years and did not seek reelection said she was pleased that the community supported the new spending plan.

“It is very good to be able to leave the board

knowing we have a good budget in place,” she said. Her term expires June 30 and the newly elected board members will be sworn in at the district’s organizational meeting after July 1.

The following incidents have been reported by the Suffolk County Police and other local police and fire departments. STORE THEFT SUSPECTS SOUGHT

Justin Timberlake has been shown overwhelming support from fans following his arrest and charge for drunk driving on Long Island almost two weeks ago.

During a traffic stop, Sag Harbor police observed Timberlake as saying he had "one martini and was following his friends home." Officers noted his "bloodshot and glassy" eyes and the "strong odor of an alcoholic beverage" on his breath, according to court records.

At a recent World Tour concert, Timberlake addressed the incident for the first time, telling fans, “We’ve been together through ups and downs and lefts and rights, and it’s been a tough week. But you’re here, and I’m here, and nothing can change this moment right now.”

He became emotional, responding to the audience's support by saying, “I know sometimes I’m hard to love, but you keep on loving me and I love you right back.” He was seen wiping away tears and added, “Thank you so much.”

Though Timberlake has only been charged and not convicted of drunk driving, his heartfelt acknowledgment to fans was touching. However, his message could have been more impactful had he addressed the serious risks of drunk driving. Acknowledging that those who drink and drive endanger not only themselves but also the lives of others would have been a powerful and meaningful message.

Drunk driving is a serious crime that our police officers battle every day, many who have been called to a drunk driving incident only to find that an individual who chose to drink and get behind the wheel of a car had killed innocent people.

Without acknowledging culpability in the incident, Timberlake could have pointed out the reckless decision to drink and drive and thus could have played a crucial role in changing attitudes and reducing the "Body Count" caused by drunk driving, ultimately saving lives.

PUBLIC COMMENTARY

Happiness and peace is a choice well worth making

Within each of us is the battle between positive and negative forces. We have the power to pick which force dominate. The character of a person is determined by the decisions we ultimately make, not the internal battles we experience.

Positive energy creates more happiness, attracts good things, and draws other positive people to you. Since you do have a choice, why not choose the good feelings?

You can find joy by paying attention to all the good that exists. Even when the world appears to be filled with turmoil, there is still a lot of good many people overlook. Don't immerse yourself in

the negative. Overexposure to negative news and people will smother your joy.

Finding joy takes more effort than finding problems. If you habitually take the path of least resistance, joy will be elusive. People are not joyous by accident; they consciously choose it. So instead of looking for problems, seek solutions.

There is a solution for every problem. Just the realization of this should provide some peace and relaxation. As you become adept at solving problems, you take them more in stride. As a result, peace takes over.

Love is touted as an elusive emotion that has the

potential to solve all of mankind's problems. The fact is, there are people you don't like and there are those who don't like you. Even so, it's important to be able to love yourself. This means you are happy with who you are and constantly strive to improve.

Action is what makes hope work. Hope for what you want. Then take the necessary steps to get it.

Crowds fill Babylon Village’s Main Street for 2024 Spring Fling Festival

It was a sun-filled day for Babylon Village’s annual Spring Fling Festival on Sat., June 8. The event brought out a large group of shoppers, browsers and their families and friends.

Sponsored by Catholic Health, Good Samaritan University Hospital and the Babylon Village Arts Council, and hosted by the Babylon Chamber of Commerce, the festival had a wide variety of vendors selling jewelry, headbands, woodwork, crystals, handmade ornaments, and clothing, including bowties and tee-shirts for your furry companions. There was also a wide array of food trucks that had barbecue, empanadas, funnel cakes, ices, iced coffee and lemonade.

And, of course, there was fun for the kiddies, including a bounce house, face painting and a sidewalk chalk drawing contest for the children.

Local businesses and organizations took the opportunity to meet and greet fairgoers as well, including members of the Babylon American Legion Post 94 and a representative of the Babylon Animal Shelter, Fiona Delgardio who said that she is thankful for events like these that enable her to show the community what they do and hopefully encourage those looking to bring home their new best friend this summer to consider the Babylon Animal Shelter. She added that all proceeds from the event go directly to training for the dogs in the shelter.

Christina Natale was at the event with her dog, Bellini, and said that she was enjoying walking around and seeing all the small businesses in Babylon Village.

Music from Nicoletta Slapo and Dan DelVecchio filled Main Street throughout the festival as they performed a variety of pop rock favorites.

“I’m enjoying meeting new people today,” said Slapo. “Babylon Village has a great sense of community that encourages creatives to come together.”

Tara Probert was there with her daughter Alice.

“Alice just did the sidewalk chalk drawing competition and it’s just such a beautiful day. I’m enjoying seeing the community come together,” said Tara.

Miguel Roxas came with his daughter Everly and said that though this is a spring festival, it is a wonderful way to get an early start on the summer season and support local businesses.

Fire Island Sewage Solution study presented to S.C. Legislature

A six-year study of Fire Island’s sewage challenges has resulted in a groundbreaking report on a multitude of possible solutions, including pumping sewage back to the mainland or using National Seashore property for a treatment plant.

S.C. Legislator/ Deputy Presiding Officer Steven J. Flotteron and Citizens Campaign for the Environment (CCE) Executive Director Adrienne Esposito delivered the report to the Suffolk County Legislature’s Environment, Parks & Agricultural Committee in Riverhead on June 17.

They were joined by Cameron Engineering, which was hired through a county grant to conduct the first comprehensive assessment of Fire Island’s wastewater challenges and needs. There were four goals, which were outlined at the beginning of the

Wood maker Eric Heck, who is also a woodshop teacher at Long Beach High School, participated in the fair to show some of his work which included handmade signage and pieces.

“My favorite thing to make are Adirondack chairs,” he said. “I love the Adirondacks and I think these chairs are a beautiful addition to a backyard.”

Vannie Teifel, of Mikayla’s Creations was looking forward to a successful day and said that this was the second year she was coming to the village’s Spring Fling Festival.

“Last year was amazing. A really nice crowd always comes out and today is such a beautiful day,” said Teifel.

Anthony Capellpo and Evan Arancio of Wakes and Waves said that they were looking forward to seeing familiar faces at the fair.

“It’s the people that make this event so special,” said Capellpo.

“This is the opening of our seasonal street festival,” said Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce President Nancy Iglesias-Gillen, adding, “We appreciate all who gave a helping hand, including our members and two young ladies on the board who significantly helped out with this event in particular, Gina Gonzalez and Nicole Kane.” Iglesias-Gillen said that these events would not be possible without all the volunteers, elected officials and the Village of Babylon. “We thank Good Samaritan Hospital, the Babylon Village Arts Council and Mayor Mary Adams who has been the greatest supporter and is a fabulous mayor, in my opinion,” said Iglesias-Gillen.

presentation: improve wastewater management; identify wastewater treatment/disposal alternatives; improve water quality and public health; and develop a “road map” for planning and implementation of solutions to ensure water quality in the Great South Bay.

“This groundbreaking sewage solutions report takes a holistic approach to managing sewage on Fire Island. This first of its kind report gathered extensive feedback and guidance from stakeholder organizations and Fire Island community members. The report identifies solutions tailored for each individual Fire Island community, 17 in total,” said Esposito.

Potential wastewater treatment alternatives identified in the study include alternative treatment systems, expanding the Ocean Beach Wastewater Treatment Plant; marine based alternatives (such as a central pump station and force main under the Great South Bay to the mainland); communal/cluster treatment plant sites; use of Fire Island National Seashore (FINS) property for treatment plant sites; and innovative technologies like compost toilets and incineration toilets.

“This plan is a crucial first step towards solving the unique challenges facing Fire Island’s wastewater management needs,” said Flotteron. “Fire Island has only one small sewage treatment plant in the Village of Ocean Beach, treating only about 575 parcels. This leaves most residents and numerous tourists to rely on antiquated septic and cesspool systems.”

Flotteron said these aging systems contribute to water quality impairments, harmful algae blooms, and loss of fisheries in the surrounding waterways, including Great South Bay.

He pointed out that while the amount of nitrogen going into the Bay is minimal during the winter months, those levels increase dramatically in the summer, which he said needs to be addressed.

The report notes that wastewater solutions for Fire Island must overcome some logistical challenges, including limited access to Fire Island from the mainland involving ferries and certain permits from FINS (Fire Island National Seashore) and include challenges within particular communities including varying dock access for community freight and passengers, unique boardwalk and roadway construction and design, narrow streets, and the need for smaller transport vehicles and specialized pump-out vehicles.

“With the options presented by this comprehensive study, we can take the necessary actions to bring solutions for this unique geological water system that protects our waterways, fisheries, and waterfront communities, as well as a thriving tourism industry that brings more than two million visitors to the area each year,” said Flotteron. “And keeping the Bay clean and healthy has a positive impact on the fishing and clamming industry, which also impacts our economy,” he added.

The study cost $250,000 and was funded through

the county’s Clean Water program, which is funded through the quarter cent sales tax.

Flotteron obtained a Suffolk County grant for CCE to hire Cameron Engineering and he and Esposito led the initiative in which federal, state, and local leaders, and stakeholder organizations collaborated over the six years to assess the Fire Island issues. He said he reached out for support from his fellow lawmakers by noting the varied interests the plan addresses, including public health and safety, the environmental and Suffolk’s economy.

Flotteron met with S.C. Exec. Ed Romaine later in the week to go over the study and put together a plan for moving forward.

Legislator and Deputy Presiding Officer Steven J. Flotteron, third from left, and Citizens Campaign for the Environment (CCE) Executive Director Adrienne Esposito, were joined by Cameron Engineering to deliver the findings of the Fire Island Wastewater Solutions Planning & Engineering Study before the Suffolk County Legislature’s Environment, Parks & Agricultural Committee chaired by Legislator Anthony Piccirillo (LD-8) in Riverhead.
