IN THE NEWS West Babylon School District voters give big ‘okay’ to budget second time around West Islip senior receives certification as first Haas Mill Operator

West Islip High School senior Camryn Byrnes has received the school’s first Haas Basic Mill Operator Certification. To complete the certification, Camryn had to complete an online training course, score perfectly on competencies from machine and lab safety, tool setup, material identification, fixture setup, controller interface settings, machine controller operation, precision measurement and machining workflow. She also completed a hands-on practical examination to demonstrate each of those skills to produce a machined part and verify that critical dimensions were within expected tolerances. Upon completion of the exam, not only was Camryn certified as a Haas Basic Mill Operator, but West Islip High School is the first school on Long Island (second in New York State) to provide this certification examination to its students. Camryn will be attending Lehigh University to study an integrated degree in engineering and arts and sciences this fall. She was the FIRST Robotics team captain this year and is looking to continue working with Haas CNC machines while studying at college.

Poll watchers count the school budget ballots in West Babylon as West Babylon School District attorney Neil Block, Esq. looks on. By Carolyn James The number of voters who headed to the polls in the West Babylon School District last week was strong and steady. And, when all of the votes were counted, the message was strong as well. More than 72 percent of voters gave a thumbs up to the district’s budget by a vote of 1768 to 654. “I thank the community who came out and voted today,” said Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly, superintendent of schools. “The Board and administration team is elated and extremely happy for the community support for the budget.” After West Babylon voters rejected the 2024-25 school budget proposal May 21, the school board and administrators worked on a new budget that met New York State tax cap. The total budget is $136,349,275, or approximately a half million dollars less than the budget voted down May 31, and $6.9 million more than the current budget of $129.4 million. The district will also have a state-aid package of $44.57 million, an increase of $1.8 million over the current year. Under the proposed spending plan, the tax levy, that portion of the budget paid for through real property taxes, would increase by 2.01 percent, to

$84.28 million. The 2023-24 levy was $82.6 million. Figures show that a home assessed at $3,000 will pay an additional $151.29 with Basic Star savings and $113.62 with Enhanced Star savings. A home assessed at $4,000 will pay an annual increase of $173.42 with Enhanced Star savings and $211.09 with Basic Star savings. The new budget prioritizes the academic and social-emotional health needs of students and maintains full-day kindergarten, school officials said. It will also maintain: •all athletic programs;
