Babylon Village Historical Society unveils plans for Heroes Fountain

From its charming Victorian and Colonial architecture to its gracious waterfall, to its connection to Guglielmo Marconi, who built a 210-foot antenna in Babylon for his invention, the wireless radio, Babylon Village has a rich history. It is often referred as the place “where history is made.” But Babylon is not only a place

where history is made but a place where history is remembered. The village is home to the statue recognizing the contributions of Robert Moses and another that honors the hundreds of baymen who fished and clammed for generations along Babylon’s waterways.

Wyandanch Memorial High School scholars raise awareness for lupus

Wyandanch Memorial High School scholars came together recently for a meaningful cause: raising awareness about lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease affecting millions worldwide. The event brought nearly all students, staff and administrators to the track where they walked for two miles wearing purple shirts, the official color for lupus awareness.

This is the fourth year Wyandanch Memorial High School held its lupus walk and for the days leading up to the walk students learned about the disease and its impact. Each day information about lupus was provided during the morning announcements and in health classes scholars were asked to write reports on the disease. Fresh-

Paul Sibblies.

men Aaliyah Greene felt compelled to do more because of daily challenges of living with lupus.

“As we were learning about lupus and I was working on my report it became apparent to me how little I knew about the disease,” said Greene. “I wanted to change that so I decided to do more research and write more in order to educate myself so that I can better inform and support others. It was just my way of contributing to the cause beyond the annual walk.”

The annual lupus walk is one of the many events hosted by Wyandanch Memorial High School to help foster a sense of unity and purpose among scholars while raising awareness for important causes.

gether to remember—and honor— the men and women who served on the front lines during the pandemic both in the Village and throughout the country. Working with Northwell Health, the Babylon Village Historical Society will be putting up a “Heroes Fountain” at Hawley’s Pond, located on the west side of Route 231 and Main Street. The structure is designed to honor those essential workers who sacrificed so much, sometimes even their lives, to help their friends and neighbors during the global health crisis.

“Today, the Village of Babylon will make history once again as we move forward in a project to honor our heroes…who dedicated themselves, worked selfishly and tirelessly and

sacrificed themselves to assist our community through the pandemic,” said Babylon Village May -

or Mary Adams at an unveiling ceremony held last week. “We will never know the complete story of all our essential workers —doctors, nurses, fire department volunteers, police, grocers, pharmacists and the list goes on. However, we can honor them and make sure their contributions are never forgotten.”

The fountain, which will feature the image of a nurse, is designed and will be constructed by Jose Fernandez, an artist from California who designed the Robert Moses and Baymen’s statues. Its design is a replica of one the village put in on Memorial Day 1897 at the intersection of Deer Park Avenue and Main Street. It was catalogued as a “drinking fountain

Babylon Village residents return to the Ukraine to continue humanitarian mission

Has the war in the Ukraine ended? The answer is of course “no,” but since the dire reality isn’t wildly publicized across our media as of late, Joe Cyr of Babylon Village and founder of PlebeianHelpers, a “feet on the ground” humanitarian aid group, feels people are developing what some are coining as “Ukraine fatigue.” With everything else going on in our world, Cyr said that he feels people are losing sight of how much the Ukrainians still need our help, and that is why they will once again be traveling to the Ukraine this August but they can use more donations for their cause.

PlebeianHelpers was founded after a trip that Joe Cyr took to the Ukraine in April of 2022 where he saw firsthand the struggles particularly the Ukrainian women and children were facing, temporarily housed at a major refugee camp in the nearby town of Przemysl. Cyr said that the name PlebeianHelpers was born from wanting to emphasize that he and his volunteers are ordinary people who want to make a difference.

PlebeianHelpers is solely volunteers who pay for their own travel, food and lodging so all donations can go directly to purchasing supplies and aid for the Ukrainians. In 2022 and 2023, together participants across the country and from our own Babylon Village raised over $220,000 to purchase goods at discount worth over $300,000 that they delivered to Ukrainian civilians in Ukraine and in Poland last August either directly themselves or with the assistance of other humanitarian aid groups that served as their agents. One of the humanitarian aid groups PlebeianHelpers will be working with for their trip this summer is Youth With A Mission (YWAM) based out of Lutsk where leader Alyona Yukhymchuk will be sponsoring one of PlebeianHelpers trips into the Carpathian Mountains to provide services for war veteran families. One of the services YWAM provides is serving military families and running support groups for wives of the soldiers. The trip into the Carpathian Mountains, Yukhymchuk explains, is a retreat where soldiers are taken out of their home into nature for healing. The retreat includes photo sessions so the soldiers can have photos with their family, create memories and also receive healing through sauna and psychology sessions that emphasize the biology of trauma and how to support the soldiers as they return to civilian life. “War dehumanizes people,” said Yukhymchuk. “We provide encouragement for them and all of the support we receive really does matter.” PlebeianHelpers will have 22 volunteers going on the trip this August, and in addition to working with Yukhymchuk and Youth With A Mission, they will be purchasing and distributing food and supplies to Ukrainian refugees in or near Kraków, Poland and purchasing and distributing food and supplies to Ukrainian civilians in or near Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine and other towns in Western Ukraine.

One of the new volunteers this year is Babylon High School junior, Jackson Maurino. Jackson is president of the World Language Club and organized a fundraiser for supplies he will be purchasing for the Ukrainians this summer. With his fundraiser, he raised over $1,000 through concessions and a raffle basket. He found out about PlebeianHelpers through his father Mark who is involved with the organization and went on the trip last year and will be going again this year. “I’m looking forward to meeting the people and seeing from so far across the world how similar we really are,” said Jackson. “I’m looking forward to seeing the gratitude in people’s eyes,” said his father, Mark. “The one thing the Ukrainians

want people to know is that it was always like this. They had good jobs and homes, and now they are waiting online for a bag of rice and essentials.”

Cyr explained that Ukrainians continue to suffer life-threatening shortages of food, shelter and basic living necessities in addition to many of them being without work due to displacement. “If not for the U.S and other contributing countries, we would be slaves to Russia,” said Yukhymchuk. “It’s God’s miracle that we are still standing.” What Yukhymchuk would like the American people to know is that even $20.00 makes a huge difference. She personally asks for prayers and if you hear of a project like PlebeianHelpers, she requests that people please get involved in any way that they can. Yukhymchuk said that the biggest concern is trauma care and if anyone has a calling to help, she would be grateful. “They are my heroes,” she said of the Ukrainian military.

“We know from experience that personally providing even a modest amount of necessities has a profound effect,” said Cyr who is looking forward to going back this summer with his wife Beth and the other volunteers to provide aid particularly to a senior home in Ivano-Frankivisk that they visited in 2022 and provided a kitchen for their facility. He said that he is looking forward to distributing food and seeing the senior citizens and the kitchen now in use.

“We have learned from the Ukrainians themselves that they are strengthened spiritually by just knowing that twenty-five Americans used their own money, well over $100,000, to travel to Ukraine and Poland to purchase over $300,000 worth of food and supplies with money donated by 450 other Americans,” said Cyr. He emphasized that PlebeianHelpers mission is non-political and solely to help civilians and recovering military members.

If you are interested in contributing to PlebeianHelpers’ efforts in aiding Ukrainian civilians, please donate through their website at plebeianhelpers.com or write a check to PlebeianHelpers Inc., and send it to PlebeianHelpers Inc., 59 Argyle Avenue, Babylon NY 11702.

Dominican Sister finds expression for her faith through art

When Sister Mary Anna Euring paints, she does so through love and a desire to bring joy to others, which she believes is our main purpose in life no matter what we choose to pursue.

Most recently, Sister Mary Anna raised money with the sale of over 100 of her original Asian Brush paintings. All proceeds went to help immigrants on Long Island through Visitation Ministry, run by Sister Flor de Maria Buruca. The event was held in the historic Rosary Hall at Queen of the Rosary Motherhouse in Amityville.

Sister Mary Anna has been a member of the Order for 65 years.

Sister Mary Anna first took up the art of Asian Brush painting as she was healing and in remission from cancer, though she has been interested in Asian culture for as long as she can remember,” she said.

She also discovered later that her pull toward Asian culture and art was in part due to the one percent Asian that she discovered in her background.

“Growing up I always wanted to try Asian Brush painting,” she said. “It now makes me feel one with my ancestors.”

She first considered pursuing this mode of art through an advertisement she saw for a class offered by the Islip Art Museum, and said that when she picked up the brush the first time it was as if she had always held one in her hand

“That the brush often takes on a life of its own and what may start out as her painting the Great South Bay will suddenly transform into a waterfall,” she. said. “It’s like an enchantment when you feel the spirit of God moving through you, and when it happens you know that the work being created is beyond you.”.

Sister Mary Anna gravitates toward painting nature.

“I see God’s presence through my art in painting nature, the water, sky, tree, birds and flowers.”

She explained that in Asian art, people are painted very small because it is believed that we are a part of the cosmos, not the center.

As far as her process, she begins by meditating first in front of her singing bowl to center, feel her breath and become aware of God’s presence. She will then listen to her favorite Asian musicians for inspiration while she paints.

Sister Mary Anna’s ministry has taken her many different paths from teaching elementary school, directing pastoral care and working with the terminally ill, including AIDS patients during the 1980s and 90s health crisis in New York City. But now she refers to this new chapter as “re-engaging,” as an artist and musician, as she has also played the flute since she was 9 years old.

“Art and my ministry teaching has brought me great joy, and if God gives me the strength, I plan to have another art show next year to help those in need,” said Sister Mary Anna, adding that she believes art and reaching out to those in need is an avenue to connection, and when we connect on a deep, spiritual level with others, those bonds are never broken.

for man and beast” and was eventually taken down when automobiles replaced horse-drawn carriages.

A replica now sits at the entrance to the village historical museum.

The Babylon community knows well the suffering endured during the pandemic. Many families lost loved ones, even as Babylon’s first responders, laborers, retail providers and others risked their lives to serve and protect during the crisis. Three members of the Babylon Fire Department, former chiefs Michael Sasuk, Tony Davida and Michael Golub, were stricken with COVID and placed on ventilators during the pandemic.

“Our village community was with them in prayer, love and support and they all, thankfully survived,” said Adams. “That is what Babylon Village is all about.”

“We will never know the complete stories of all

of our essential workers, but we can make sure their contributions are never forgotten,” added Village Historian Wayne Horsley.

Other speakers noted that for many people, the only people they could interact with during the pandemic were essential workers: the grocery clerks, pharmacists, sanitation workers, and others who, despite the health risks, continued to work within their communities.

The fountain will be 20feet wide, 17-feet high and

placed 30-feet off the street in direct line with the bridge and waterfall at Hawley’s Pond.

Additional support for the project comes from Babylon Town, Catholic Health Services, the Long Island Federation of Labor, Suffolk County PBA, CSEA Local 330, the Painters Union and the Nicolia company, all of whom had representatives at the press conference announcing the project.

Also attending were NYS Assemblyman Michael Durso, Babylon Town Councilman Tony Martinez, S.C. Leg. Kevin McCaffrey, and others who all pledged to find some public dollars to support the fountain.

The Babylon Historical Society will be conducting fundraising events as the project moves forward. For more information on this project and other Babylon Village history, go to babylonvillagehistoricalsociety.com.

An estimated 28% of high school students and 11% of middle school students reported using e-cigarettes this year, according to a national survey. This amounts to 5.3 million young users, up from 3.6 million last year, despite laws prohibiting sales to those under 18.

The statistics are alarming due to vaping's addictive effects and the harmful chemicals in the vaping product that can cause long-term heart and lung problems.

The rise in addiction is not surprising given the powerful advertising influence of tobacco companies, many of which target young people. Legislative action was required to counter the “assault” on children by vape shops using appealing flavors and cartoon character in their ad -

vertising campaigns. Many of these shops were near schools, a practice now prohibited by local laws.

The science is clear: vapes contain addictive ingredients that can harm various parts of the body. Armed with this information a middle school student recently researched vaping's negative impacts and launched a campaign to inform and empower her classmates. This initiative has been adopted by the Babylon Town which is working with not for profits in raising funds to place vape detectors in local schools.

We hope to see this program adopted throughout Long Island. Many negative forces impact young people today, affecting their lives and their futures. This issue deserves a full and concerted effort to address.

It is a national obligation to protect veterans' access to mental health treatments

As a nation, we have a sacred duty to support the men and women who put their lives on the line to defend our freedoms. That responsibility doesn't end when their service does. Once military members return home, we must ensure they have the health care they need to live their best lives -- including treatments for mental health conditions.

Bipartisan majorities in Congress have made a priority of this issue, notably with their overwhelming support for the Commander John Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Health Care Improvement Act of 2019.

Unfortunately, though, a single provision in the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act threatens to undermine this progress. The law is inadvertently discouraging the development of next-generation psychiatric medications that could benefit countless veterans. The good news is that an easy, bipartisan fix is now in the works. Mental health challenges remain heartbreakingly

common among our nation's heroes. Rates of PTSD are higher among veterans than civilians. Sadly, it is estimated that 17 veterans die by suicide every day, and over half of veterans living with mental illness aren't receiving treatment.,

These painful statistics reflect the unique stresses and traumas of military life. Combat exposure, family separation, reintegration into civilian life— each can take a heavy psychological toll.

Drug researchers have responded to mental illness with an expanding arsenal of treatment options. The United States is currently responsible for about half of all new medications developed worldwide.

But affordability is also an important issue. To address it, the IRA gave Medicare the authority to negotiate with drug makers for lower prices. To help ensure pharmaceutical developers have time to recoup their investment costs, lawmakers wisely granted newly approved medicines a period of exemption from price negotiations.

But oddly, this exemption period isn't the same for all drug types. Under the law, new "large molecule" biologic medicines are exempt from government price negotiations for 13 years after FDA approval, whereas smallmolecule drugs receive only nine years of exemption.

Unsurprisingly, this disparity is already leading drug companies to

deprioritize or abandon small-molecule treatments. In a recent survey of over two dozen prominent biopharmaceutical firms, 63% said they plan to shift investment away from small molecules because of the IRA.

This alarming trend could have serious consequences for veterans seeking treatment options for mental illness. Small molecules have a key advantage when it comes to treating mental health conditions: they're tiny enough to cross the blood-brain barrier. That's why small molecules make up virtually all psychiatric medications, from antipsychotics to antidepressants.

The IRA's bias against small molecules will also worsen existing inequities in care access. Small-molecule medications usually come as easy-to-use pills, while biologics typically require injections or IVs administered by a healthcare professional.

Thankfully, a straightforward, bipartisan fix has already emerged. The Ensuring Pathways to Innovative Cures (EPIC) Act would align price negotiation timelines for small molecules and biologics, giving each category 13 years of post-approval protection.

As millions of veterans struggle with mental health or behavioral conditions, we need to protect their access to innovative therapies. That starts with passing the EPIC Act.

Famous Concert and Celebrity Photographer, LHS Graduate Returns for Special Talk

Lindenhurst High School art students recently had a chance to learn about the celebrity photography business from Kevin Mazur, one of the most famous photographers in the industry. A class of 1979 graduate, Mazur impressed students with stories about his journey as a concert and celebrity photographer and provided crucial tips on how the students could find their own success.

Throughout his three-decade career, Kevin Mazur has produced thousands of iconic images of the world’s most famous stars. During his visit to Lindenhurst, he spoke about his start as a rock concert photographer and the work required to sell his photos to the popular magazines and newspapers of the time. Over the years, Mazur made connections with various stars, he said, who came to trust him to take their signature photos while on tour and at major celebrity gatherings. His

talk traced the ins-and-outs of the industry, from film to digital, where he helped pioneer some of the earliest online photo wire services, to the current social media era.

A key point Mazur raised throughout his conversation with LHS students was about the importance of building relationships; as important as gaining mastery over the photography medium, he said, is treating subjects and colleagues with respect and patience. He also stressed the importance of working hard. He credited these skills for giving him access to the celebrity and music world, with some of his most recent events including the Met Gala and the European arm of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

After the presentation, the Lindenhurst students had the chance to enter a raffle to take home Mazur’s prints of various major music stars.
