Parade returns to Babylon Village Sunday, June 2

Last year's event drew several thousand people to Babylon's downtown. Organizers are hoping for a similar response this year—and for good weather.
Babylon Village Pride Parade Returns for its 5th Annual Celebration
The Babylon Village Pride Parade, now in its fifth year, is set to return on Sun., June 2, beginning at 3 p.m. in Babylon Village. This vibrant and inclusive event celebrates the members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community in Babylon Village and beyond.
Babylon Pride has quickly become the fastest-growing pride event on Long Island, drawing participants and spectators from across the area. The parade aims to not only celebrate diversity but also to support future LGBTQ+ events for students and business owners in the community.
Babylon Town held its first Italian Food Festival offering fairgoers everything from antipasto to zeppoli. There was music, a special presentation outlining the impact of Italian-Americans’ impact on the town and for those looking for some nostalgia, a classic Cadillac car show.
“The event was an incredible success,” said Babylon Town Councilman Anthony Manetta who organized the day. “The entertainment, food selection and presentation brought us all together to celebrate our shared culture. We are already looking forward to next year.”

The event is spearheaded by Babylon residents Robert McKeown and M. Roman, an unlikely pairing that exemplifies how community members can unite to celebrate diversity and promote acceptance.
"We are thrilled to bring back the Babylon Village Pride Parade for its fifth consecutive year," said M. Roman. "Our mission is to promote awareness, acknowledgment, and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community while fostering a sense of unity and celebration."
Participants should arrive by noon to secure parking. The event will feature colorful floats, lively performances, and opportunities for networking and community engagement.

Local artists bring their best to the BVAC Art by the Falls event
There was pottery, jewelry, plants and flowers all types of hand-crafted items at the Babylon Village Arts Council’s 16th annual outdoor art exhibition, Art by the Falls, on May 18 in Argyle Park.
This outdoor art exhibition and sale featured local artists in a variety of media such as pottery, photography, painting, woodworking and more. There was live music by Nico and the Man and activities for families.
Two student artists from Babylon High School showcased their art as part of the Art Partnership Program.
This program awards selected students with a scholarship to purchase art supplies to create a unique series of artwork and experience the exhibition process. For more information on this event visit babylonvillagearts.org.

Farmingdale HS graduate wins seat on the district's school board; other local results
By Carolyn JamesGavin Rogers got down to the polls in Farmingdale at 4:30 a.m. on election day, May 21. He wanted to get a good parking spot so he could hand out his palm cards and speak to voters, he said.
That was that kind of personal approach he took during his campaign as he knocked on more than 200 doors asking people to consider him in his run for a seat on the Farmingdale School Board.
The effort paid off.
Rogers, a 21-year-old graduate of Farmingdale High School, was one of four candidates who ran for three seats on the board. And he got the highest number of votes: 1,510.
Voters also reelected Anthony Giordano and Kathy Lively, who got 1,506 votes and 1,450 votes respectively. Challenger Sheree Jones got 1,192 votes.
“Went to the polls early to get a good parking sport and to meet voters,” said Rogers who added that while he was happy to win, he was prepared for a loss. “It’s not easy
to win your first campaign,” he said. “But I had a lot of support and spoke to a lot of people, reaching out and providing the personal touch and believe that made the difference.”
In addition, Farmingdale voters approved their school budget, 1,532 to 922, as well as a capital project, 1,749 to 709. The Farmingdale Youth Council budget also passed, 1,726 to 727.
For many Farmingdale voters at the polls last week, other issues were on their mind.
“I live here and taught here and we have a son and grandchildren in the district,” said one woman who asked that her name not be used.
Her husband noted that one of the candidates, Rogers, was 21. “Good for him in running,” he said. “But I would say come back in 10 years and we can talk.”
“This has been a tough year for the Farmingdale community,” said another voter, referring to the Daler marching band bus accident that killed the band director
POLICE BLOTTER
The following incidents have been reported by the Suffolk County Police and other local police and fire departments. TEEN CHARGED WITH BRINGING BB GUN TO SCHOOL
Deer Park: Suffolk County Police arrested a Deer Park student after he brought a BB gun to school and made threats of harm towards the school community on Thurs., May 16. Police gave this account: First Precinct Patrol officers responded to Robert Frost Middle School, located at 450 Half Hollow Road, following an incident where a student displayed a BB gun and threatened to cause harm. A security guard escorted the student to the principal’s office, where the student handed the BB gun over to school officials at approximately 11:25 a.m. The student was isolated from other students. First Precinct Crime Section officers investigated and determined there was no credible threat. First Squad detectives charged the student with Aggravated Threat of Mass Harm, a Class A Misdemeanor. He was released to a family member and is scheduled to be arraigned at Suffolk County Family Court on a later date. ARREST FOR SELLING VAPE TO MINORS
West Islip/Bay Shore: Suffolk County Police arrested a store owner on Sun., May 19 charging him with possessing tasers. In addition, employees of two stores were charged with selling vape products to minors. The arrests were made as part of the Suffolk County Police Department’s “Operation Smoke Out,” Third Precinct Crime Section officers conducted a compliance check at several stores in relations to the sales of vape products and found two stores were not in compliance.
The following people were charged with Unlawfully Dealing with a Child and Sale of
and music volunteer last fall. “So, I think the community is coming out to support the budget.”
Giordano, who was also at the polls greeting voters, had this to say: “Listen, we are here for the kids and taxpayers. That is always our focus.”
Other results:
Babylon: Voters in Babylon approved their $62.19 million budget 542 to 198 and reelected incumbent school board trustees David Sonkin and Theresa Patiri with 563 and 594 votes respectively. Also approved with Proposition #2 call for the establishment of a capital reserve fund.

Flavored Vape Products, a public health law violation: Malik Gunes, 55, of Bay Shore, an employee of Vishma Smoke, located at 455 Montauk Highway, West Islip, and Ajantha Ihalagama, 40, of Bay Shore, an employee of Bay Smoke Shop, located at 1544 Union Boulevard, Bay Shore
The owner of Vishma Smoke, Warnakulasuriya Fernando, 50, of Bay Shore, was charged with two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon after two tasers were determined to be on display for sale at the store. Between both stores, approximately 10,000 flavored vapes were seized by police.
The charges against the three are pending.
MAN INJURED IN SHOOTING
Wyandanch: Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives are investigating a shooting that seriously injured a Deer Park man in Wyandanch on Sat., May 18. Police said a 23-year-old man was outside of an autobody shop, located at 366 Long Island Ave., when he was approached by a man on foot and shot twice. The victim ran to a friend’s house on Lakewood Street during which 911 was called at 3:53 p.m. The shooter fled on foot westbound on Long Island Avenue.
The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment of serious but not life-threatening injuries. Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to contact First Squad detectives at 631-854-8152 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
The charges against those listed are allegations and the cases are still pending in the courts. Individuals charged and whose names appear in this column may submit documentation to us at a later date that the charges have been dismissed or that they have been found innocent and we will include that information in this space in a timely manner.
Copiague: Voters approved their school budget 502 to 193, as well as a proposition to establish a capital reserve fund. Incumbent school board members Michael Higgins and Kenneth Urban ran unopposed and received 504 and 516 votes respectively.
Incumbent Trustee Leddy Torres was defeated by Beatrice Bocchieri Guido, 335 to 304.
was reelected with 703 votes and Mahwish Yaqoob was elected to the open seat with 435 votes in the uncontested race.
North Babylon: residents approved their budget 709 to 320 and three candidates ran for two seats, incumbents Matthew Lucchetti, Bob Scheid and Karen Schmitt. Lucchetti and Scheid were reelected.
West Babylon: West Babylon voters turned down a budget proposal that pierced the NYS Tax Cap, 1,333 to 1028. It required a 60 percent approval for passage. According to a school representative, the board of education and administration will be meeting shortly to discuss whether the district will operate under a contingency budget or hold a revote where it can present the same budget or a newly revised spending plan. Three incumbents, John Evola, Stephan Maurcere and Anthony Raccomando received 1,349, 1,387 and 1,503 votes respectively defeating Shannon Camarda who received 1,005 votes.

West Islip: Residents in West Islip approved their $138.7 million budget and reelected incumbent trustees Richard Antoniello and Debbie Brown.
Incumbent Trustee Donna Marie Elliot
Voters speak loud and clear in local school board elections
In a resounding display of civic engagement, voters turned out in large numbers to select their school board trustees, consider passage of school budgets and propositions permitting districts to set aside money for capital improvements. In Amityville, a proposition passed that asked voters if they wanted the district to move to at-large elections.
Perhaps it was because of the arduous difficulties district's faced this year in putting together reasonable budgets that voters could support or because they wanted to see definitive change on their school boards that they were so decisive in 2024. In Amityville and in Plainedge, for example, two longtime incumbents were defeated and new faces will now be charged with moving the district forward. In another district in our readership area, West Babylon, voters defeated their
budget, which pierced the New York State Tax Cap. Now the board must make a reassessment of its fiscal priorities and decide whether to bring the same budget up for a second vote, one that meets the state's cap on spending or simply move forward under a contingency spending plan. It is clear in many of the outcomes that there was a palpable desire for change in leadership and governance, which motivated many to exercise their democratic right at the polls. But whatever the reasons, the result was that your vote counted and made a difference. Or to quote pop star and entertainer Taylor Swift: "It's not enough to just want change...You have to go an make change by voting."
This year, in large numbers, voters did that.

Mastering Positivity: How to Keep Annoyances from Spoiling Your Attitude
By Bryan Golden Circumstancescan be annoying. Your car won't start. You wind up on the slowest checkout line at the supermarket. You can't find something. There are no open parking spaces at the mall. The list goes on.
The actions of others can also be annoying. Someone is rude. A car cuts you off. A waiter gives you poor service. People are talking during a movie. Your boss is in a bad mood.
The list of irritations can be endless. And, they have an uncanny tendency to pop up at the worst of times.
Your frame of mind at the time of an annoyance determines your reac -
tion, or whether you react at all. Challenging situations have a cumulative effect. They can wear you down, magnifying the impact of successive events. As a result, you may overreact and these minor events can get blown out of proportion, transforming into major situations. When you allow your emotions to go haywire, you will say or do things you may, at the very least, regret.
On the other hand, when you are in good spirits, annoyances don't seem to matter much, if at all. With an upbeat attitude, you just shrug things off. Also, you tend to find so -
lutions more readily than when you are stressed. What techniques can you use to keep life's annoyances from becoming major calamities? Start by keeping things in perspective. You know when a situation is an annoyance rather than a major event. Stay calm. Say to yourself, "this is no big deal." Let it go. Don't allow your ego to take over.
You do not have to prove anything. It's not necessary to teach someone a lesson. When you look to assign blame, you make a situation worse. Don't be paranoid. A "why does
this always happen to me" attitude won't accomplish anything. Everyone deals with annoyances. You've gotten past them before and you will do so again.
In the big, and little, scheme of things annoyances will always be a part of your life. Look to make the best of a situation. Laugh more. The more you let the small stuff go, the happier you will be.

Pets, Pets, Pets...

On Memorial Day we honor all who paid the ultimate price to protect our lives, country, and freedom. Throughout history, dogs have accompanied soldiers into battle. Dogs played a bigger part during the Civil War than most of us realize.
Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868, as Decoration Day, setting aside time to adorn the graves and commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers. After World War I, it became an occasion honoring those who died in all of America’s wars. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day to be on the last Monday in May.
There are accounts of Civil War soldiers’ dogs, following them into battle, on long marches and during lonely nights. Dogs and horses were often mascots for companies, regiments, and battalions. Some Civil War mascots were an inspiration for the troops,

while others were a reminder of beloved pets at home. Mascots brought loyalty and enthusiasm. For soldiers, the act of nurturing animals also offset boredom in camp.
Not all mascots were dogs. A Native American gave the 8th Wisconsin infantry an eagle as a gift for President Lincoln. “Old Abe” was carried on a staff as a symbol of courage when the men marched. Confederate soldiers tried to shoot the bird but were only able to nick him.
Besides building morale, dogs were also adept at finding water sources for troops. Officers only had primitive maps when leading men into unknown territory. Water, of course, was a vital commodity. Both the men and their horses needed regular water breaks. Even when a regiment marched near a river, a dog could show safer routes down a steep embankment.
If provisions were slow to arrive, some dogs were good at finding food for more than just themselves. Chickens were relatively easy prey. Other dogs were skilled at pulling food off loaded wagons. And if the men had time to hunt for their own dinners, their dogs became skilled partners.
Stories exist of dogs guarding their wounded masters or staying by their bodies. One widow located her husband’s remains because his dog stayed by the shallow grave where the man had been hastily buried. Below is an amazing memoir called “Reason and Instinct” written in 1871, author unknown:
“After the battle of Fredericksburg, it fell to my duty to search a given district for any dead or wounded soldiers there might be left, and

to bring relief. Near an old brick dwelling I discovered a soldier in gray who seemed to be dead. Lying by his side was a noble dog, with his head flat upon his master’s neck.

As I approached, the dog raised his eyes to me good-naturedly, and began wagging his tail; but he did not change his position. The fact that the animal did not growl, that he did not move, but, more than all, the intelligent, joyful expression of his face, convinced me that the man was only wounded, which proved to be the case.
A bullet had pierced his throat, and faint from the loss of blood, he had fallen where he lay. Whether this was casual or not, I cannot say. But the shaggy coat of the faithful creature was completely matted with his master’s blood. The dog had stopped the bleeding from the wound by laying his head across it.”
Here are profiles of two famous Civil War dogs and a symbolic mascot:
SALLIE-a brindle Pit served as mascot for the 11th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. She was given to a lieutenant at four weeks old. Sallie was raised by the men of the regiment. She knew the drum roll announcing reveille. Sallie followed the men on marches and to the battlefield, always on the front lines. In 1863, at a review of the Union army, Sallie marched with “her” soldiers. Abraham Lincoln spotted the dog from the stand. He raised his famous hat in salute. At Gettysburg, Sallie became separated from the 11th. Days later they found Sallie guarding the bodies of the dead and wounded soldiers. In 1865 at Hatcher’s Run Sallie was struck by a bullet and killed instantly. She was buried on the battlefield. In 1890 the surviving veterans of the 11th Pennsylvania dedicated a monument on the Gettysburg battleground which contains a likeness of Sallie sleeping.
JACK- a stray Bulldog wandered into a Pittsburgh firehouse. He went on to answer every fire call and was given an expensive ($75)
silver collar. Jack “enlisted,” along with most of the firemen in the 102nd Pennsylvania Volunteers Regiment. He remained with them from 1861 through 1864, except for six months as a prisoner of war, which ended when he was exchanged for a Confederate soldier. While in a Virginia prison, he brought cheer to his fellow Union prisoners. Jack was in many battles, was captured again but escaped after six hours. At Malvern Hill he was severely wounded. Just before Christmas 1864 in Maryland, Jack disappeared forever. His comrades assumed he was stolen and probably killed for his silver collar.
IRISH WOLFOUND- The 69th New York, made up mostly of Irish immigrants, used the Irish Wolfhound as the regimental mascot. A Wolfhound was depicted on the regiment’s coat of arms. Two Irish Wolfhounds adopted by the unit were clad in green coats, and marched with the color guard.
The “Fighting Irish” were known for their bravery. The soldiers went into battle at Fredericksburg with a sprig of boxwood in their caps. Robert E. Lee commented: “Never were men so brave” after inspecting the battlefield and seeing many of the dead had green sprigs in their caps. Hundreds more of the 69th sacrificed their lives at Gettysburg. Not far from Sallie’s monument at Gettysburg is a bronze Irish Wolfhound, reclining on a pedestal in front of a Celtic cross. The Wolfhound- loyal, fast, strong- is a fitting symbol of the brave Irish Americans who fought to preserve their new country.
Dressed for Memorial Day and Waiting for Homes at Last Hope, 3300 Beltagh Ave., Wantagh: Charcoal gray Darcy is a female, nine-month-old Schnauzer mix pup, while bubbly Ginger is a red, four-year-old Basset mix. Both girls are “pet-riotic” and loving. Call (631-671-2588) for more info.

Winter Brothers makes donation to Lindenhurst Village Tree Project
Winter Bros. Waste Systems, of West Babylon, recently made an $8,500 donation to the Village of Lindenhurst for the planting new trees along South Wellwood Avenue, through the heart of the Lindenhurst Downtown Business District, from Gates Avenue to Hoffman Avenue.
Earlier this year, the village began a project to improve pedestrian and traffic safety on Wellwood Avenue, including the installation of pedestrian crosswalks, sidewalk bulbouts and median extensions, repaving and curbing of the road, and restriping and reangling parking spaces. As part of this “facelift”, the Village had to remove the trees that adorned southern Downtown. Many of those trees, however, were in failing health, or of a variety with height and root-growth that threatened the integrity and safety of sidewalks and utility wires.

So, in an effort to replant trees that would benefit the Village in longevity -- ones that will not become too large and cause future damage, and ones that are not of an invasive species – the Village consulted with a number of horticultural experts, as well as the Long Island Invasive Special Management Area (LIISMA), and chose two varieties to plant in Lindenhurst Downtown – the Kwanzan Cherry Tree and the Snow Goose Flowering Cherry Tree.
“The Village of Lindenhurst extends its grateful thanks to Winter Bros. Waste Systems for this very generous donation towards the beautification of our Downtown,” said Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata. “We appreciate their partnership in our commitment to the planting, preserving, and caring of trees in our community.”
Summer hours for Babylon Village Offices
Babylon Village announced its summer hours beginning on Monday, June 23 through Tuesday, September 3. All Village of Babylon offices will have summer hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Babylon Village Highway, Sanitation and Parks Departments will remain on their regular schedule of 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The two men who have theirnames placed onthe NYS Police Memorial Wall.

Babylon High School grads: where are you now?
By Alena BerenblattThe Babylon School District Alumni Committee is looking for Babylon High School graduates who want to share their life and experiences since they graduated from Babylon High School.
“One of my goals is to celebrate what our graduates have accomplished,” said Emily Moran, instructional technology integration specialist at Babylon, a 2012 BHS grad, and a member of the Alumni Committee. “This is something I feel super strongly about,” she added.
The recently formed Alumni Committee, comprised of community members and staff from each of the Babylon schools, is focused on creating opportunities that will foster connections with alumni to benefit current Babylon students. “Where are you now?” is the committee’s first initiative. The committee also plans to re-establish the district’s Distinguished Alumni Award.
The committee is hoping Babylon grads will respond to the alumni search to not only build an alumni database, but also to share the achievements of graduates with current students. The link from the district website and from the QR code in the image leads to a form with such “questions” as “What about your Babylon education do you attribute to your success today” and “Share your favorite Babylon moment.”
Moran said the initiative was only just recently piloted but it has already received a great response.
“Our goal is to inspire our students. I have a passion for Babylon, and we want to highlight” Babylon’s many positives, Moran said.
