Babylon Town held its first Italian Food Festival offering fairgoers everything from antipasto to zeppoli. There was music, a special presentation outlining the impact of Italian-Americans’ impact on the town and for those looking for some nostalgia, a classic Cadillac car show.
“The event was an incredible success,” said Babylon Town Councilman Anthony Manetta who organized the day. “The entertainment, food selection and presentation brought us all together to celebrate our shared culture. We are already looking forward to next year.”
In a decisive move, voters in Amityville ousted two longtime school board members, Jeannette Santos and Juan Leon, and elected first-time candidates Wendy Canestro, Megan Messman and Caroline Fanning. Messman won Santos’ seat, Fanning won Leon’s seat and Canestro won the open seat of Dr. Terry Fulton.
The trio had been vocal critics of the board as it wrestled to overcome a 3.6 million budget deficit from the 2022-23 school year and, was forced to reduce programs, extra-curricular activities, teachers and staff address a proposed deficit this year of more than $4 million.
“We are really excited to work hard,
effect positive change for students, staff and taxpayers,” said Canestro moments after the results were announced. “We are looking forward to work with fellow board members to restore the Amityville School District…to bring back public confidence; great things are on the horizon.”

could be heard from the approximately 75 people who maintained vigilance at Northeast School where the votes were tallied following the closing of the polls at 9 p.m., Tues., May 21.
Voters also approved the school budget of $117.7 million, a 4.41 percent increase by a vote of 1051 to 698. The budget was within the New York State Tax Cap.
“As I have always said, my priority is the students,” said Santos upon learning that her 30-plus year tenure as a school board trustee had come to a close. “I am happy that the budget passed.”
Leon thanked the community for the support he receoved over the past nine years.
”We did some amazing things and I am certain there is still more to come. The real gift has been having a front-row seat to watch our children learn and grow.”
In addition, voters approved Proposition #2, which called for the district to hold at-large elections. Currently candidates for school board in Amityville run for seat against specific candidates. In an at-large race, all candidates run against each other with those receiving the highest number of votes winning seats on the board. The change goes into effect next year.
At the polls at Northeast and Amityville High School earlier in the day, traffic was slow but steady. Some voters stopped to express their thoughts and concerns.
One voter who said she voted for the budget said: “The budget is important to me because my family has been here for years and I don’t want to see the district to shut down,”
said Julia E. Lindo. “Kids need a good education.”
Another voter, Danielle McCalvin, said that she attended many board meetings and told the board they had to be more transparent and open. “I want to make sure our voices are heard,” she said as she waited to vote at Northeast. “We want more transparency.” She added that as the budget vote and trustee election drew close, she saw that the board did make some efforts at being more open. “These are our children and we want to know where our money is going and how things work. My message to them was that we would trust them more if they were transparent.
Apryl Smith, a graduate of Amityville Schools said she was out to vote to help ensure that the children in the district, “get everything they need to have a great education.
“We have to turn things around,” she said.
At Amityville High School the district’s second polling location, the concerns were similar.
“I have friends and family members who are in the district as teachers,” said one voter who asked that her name not be used. “I am here to support them.”
Justin and Jennifer Kennedy were at the polls with their three children and said they were concerned about the fiscal problems and the loss of staff.
“It is a crisis and it is important to get people in there (on the board) who are qualified,” said Justin Kennedy. “It is time for new people because as a young family in Amityville the prospect of having to pay for school taxes, library taxes, village taxes that increase every year is difficult, said Jennifer Kennedy. “My husband’s family has been here for five generations and we want to keep our home here.”
Since Fulton’s seat was open, Canestro was sworn in election night. The other two candidates
As police departments across the state gathered in Albany earlier this month to pay tribute to officers who made the ultimate sacrifice and those who have made significant contributions to their departments. Suffolk County PBA honored two of the county’s finest, Officer Robert Kirwan and Chief of Police Compitello who served in the First Precinct, Babylon. The two men who have theirnames placed on the NYS Police Memorial Wall.
Amityville Day: half a century of celebration
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Amityville Day, an opportunity to celebrate the people and the history of the hamlet. The all-day anniversary celebration will be held Sat., June 1 at Bolden Mack Park.
In a resounding display of civic engagement, voters turned out in large numbers to select their school board trustees, consider passage of school budgets and propositions permitting districts to set aside money for capital improvements. In Amityville, a proposition passed that asked voters if they wanted the district to move to at-large elections. Perhaps it was because of the arduous difficulties district's faced this year in putting together reasonable budgets that voters could support or because they wanted to see definitive change on their school boards that they were so decisive in 2024. In Amityville and in Plainedge, for example, two longtime incumbents were defeated and new faces will now be charged with moving the district forward. In another district in our readership area, West Babylon, voters defeated their
budget, which pierced the New York State Tax Cap. Now the board must make a reassessment of its fiscal priorities and decide whether to bring the same budget up for a second vote, one that meets the state's cap on spending or simply move forward under a contingency spending plan. It is clear in many of the outcomes that there was a palpable desire for change in leadership and governance, which motivated many to exercise their democratic right at the polls. But whatever the reasons, the result was that your vote counted and made a difference. Or to quote pop star and entertainer Taylor Swift: "It's not enough to just want change...You have to go an make change by voting."
This year, in large numbers, voters did that.
can be annoying. Your car won't start. You wind up on the slowest checkout line at the supermarket. You can't find something. There are no open parking spaces at the mall. The list goes on.
The actions of others can also be annoying. Someone is rude. A car cuts you off. A waiter gives you poor service. People are talking during a movie. Your boss is in a bad mood.
The list of irritations can be endless. And, they have an uncanny tendency to pop up at the worst of times.
Your frame of mind at the time of an annoyance determines your reac -
tion, or whether you react at all. Challenging situations have a cumulative effect. They can wear you down, magnifying the impact of successive events. As a result, you may overreact and these minor events can get blown out of proportion, transforming into major situations. When you allow your emotions to go haywire, you will say or do things you may, at the very least, regret.
On the other hand, when you are in good spirits, annoyances don't seem to matter much, if at all. With an upbeat attitude, you just shrug things off. Also, you tend to find so -

lutions more readily than when you are stressed.
What techniques can you use to keep life's annoyances from becoming major calamities? Start by keeping things in perspective. You know when a situation is an annoyance rather than a major event. Stay calm. Say to yourself, "this is no big deal." Let it go. Don't allow your ego to take over.
You do not have to prove anything. It's not necessary to teach someone a lesson. When you look to assign blame, you make a situation worse. Don't be paranoid. A "why does
this always happen to me" attitude won't accomplish anything. Everyone deals with annoyances. You've gotten past them before and you will do so again.
In the big, and little, scheme of things annoyances will always be a part of your life. Look to make the best of a situation. Laugh more. The more you let the small stuff go, the happier you will be.

On Memorial Day we honor all who paid the ultimate price to protect our lives, country, and freedom. Throughout history, dogs have accompanied soldiers into battle. Dogs played a bigger part during the Civil War than most of us realize.
Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868, as Decoration Day, setting aside time to adorn the graves and commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers. After World War I, it became an occasion honoring those who died in all of America’s wars. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day to be on the last Monday in May.
There are accounts of Civil War soldiers’ dogs, following them into battle, on long marches and during lonely nights. Dogs and horses were often mascots for companies, regiments, and battalions. Some Civil War mascots were an inspiration for the troops,
while others were a reminder of beloved pets at home. Mascots brought loyalty and enthusiasm. For soldiers, the act of nurturing animals also offset boredom in camp.
Not all mascots were dogs. A Native American gave the 8th Wisconsin infantry an eagle as a gift for President Lincoln. “Old Abe” was carried on a staff as a symbol of courage when the men marched. Confederate soldiers tried to shoot the bird but were only able to nick him.
Besides building morale, dogs were also adept at finding water sources for troops. Officers only had primitive maps when leading men into unknown territory. Water, of course, was a vital commodity. Both the men and their horses needed regular water breaks. Even when a regiment marched near a river, a dog could show safer routes down a steep embankment.
If provisions were slow to arrive, some dogs were good at finding food for more than just themselves. Chickens were relatively easy prey. Other dogs were skilled at pulling food off loaded wagons. And if the men had time to hunt for their own dinners, their dogs became skilled partners.
Stories exist of dogs guarding their wounded masters or staying by their bodies. One widow located her husband’s remains because his dog stayed by the shallow grave where the man had been hastily buried. Below is an amazing memoir called “Reason and Instinct” written in 1871, author unknown:
“After the battle of Fredericksburg, it fell to my duty to search a given district for any dead or wounded soldiers there might be left, and to bring relief. Near an old brick dwelling I

discovered a soldier in gray who seemed to be dead. Lying by his side was a noble dog, with his head flat upon his master’s neck.
As I approached, the dog raised his eyes to me good-naturedly, and began wagging his tail; but he did not change his position. The fact that the animal did not growl, that he did not move, but, more than all, the intelligent, joyful expression of his face, convinced me that the man was only wounded, which proved to be the case.
A bullet had pierced his throat, and faint from the loss of blood, he had fallen where he lay. Whether this was casual or not, I cannot say. But the shaggy coat of the faithful creature was completely matted with his master’s blood. The dog had stopped the bleeding from the wound by laying his head across it.”
Here are profiles of two famous Civil War dogs and a symbolic mascot:
SALLIE-a brindle Pit served as mascot for the 11th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. She was given to a lieutenant at four weeks old. Sallie was raised by the men of the regiment. She knew the drum roll announcing reveille. Sallie followed the men on marches and to the battlefield, always on the front lines. In 1863, at a review of the Union army, Sallie marched with “her” soldiers. Abraham Lincoln spotted the dog from the stand. He raised his famous hat in salute. At Gettysburg, Sallie became separated from the 11th. Days later they found Sallie guarding the bodies of the dead and wounded soldiers.
In 1865 at Hatcher’s Run Sallie was struck by a bullet and killed instantly. She was buried on the battlefield. In 1890 the surviving veterans of the 11th Pennsylvania dedicated a monument on the Gettysburg battleground which contains a likeness of Sallie sleeping.
JACK- a stray Bulldog wandered into a Pittsburgh firehouse. He went on to answer every fire call and was given an expensive ($75) silver collar. Jack “enlisted,” along with most
of the firemen in the 102nd Pennsylvania Volunteers Regiment. He remained with them from 1861 through 1864, except for six months as a prisoner of war, which ended when he was exchanged for a Confederate soldier. While in a Virginia prison, he brought cheer to his fellow Union prisoners. Jack was in many battles, was captured again but escaped after six hours. At Malvern Hill he was severely wounded. Just before Christmas 1864 in Maryland, Jack disappeared forever. His comrades assumed he was stolen and probably killed for his silver collar.
IRISH WOLFOUND- The 69th New York, made up mostly of Irish immigrants, used the Irish Wolfhound as the regimental mascot. A Wolfhound was depicted on the regiment’s coat of arms. Two Irish Wolfhounds adopted by the unit were clad in green coats, and marched with the color guard.
The “Fighting Irish” were known for their bravery. The soldiers went into battle at Fredericksburg with a sprig of boxwood in their caps. Robert E. Lee commented: “Never were men so brave” after inspecting the battlefield and seeing many of the dead had green sprigs in their caps. Hundreds more of the 69th sacrificed their lives at Gettysburg.
Not far from Sallie’s monument at Gettysburg is a bronze Irish Wolfhound, reclining on a pedestal in front of a Celtic cross. The Wolfhound- loyal, fast, strong- is a fitting symbol of the brave Irish Americans who fought to preserve their new country.
