THE NEW YEAR

A time of change Make health a priority in 2015

any of us begin the new year inspired to make personal changes that will set us on a productive, fulfilling path for the months — and years — ahead.

Health-related goals are popular New Year’s resolutions, but sticking to them can be tough, especially if you’ve put major lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, getting more exercise, or eating better on your list. A lot of us start out strong on our new healthy path, then quickly lose steam. Whether your efforts include a desire to quit smoking, lose weight, eat healthier or even floss more, we want to make this year’s resolutions stick. If you have made those resolutions with the best of intentions to follow through, you are not alone:each January roughly one in three Americans resolve to better themselves in some way. However, a much smaller percentage of people actually follow through with their resolutions. It’s been documented that while about 75 percent of people stick to their

goals for at least a week, less than half (46 percent) are still on target six months later. Here are some tips from the American Psychological Association to make sure your 2015 New Year’s resolutions stick: Start small: Make resolutions that you think you can keep. If, for example, you want to exercise more frequently, schedule three or four days a week at the gym instead of seven and then build from there. Change one behavior at a time: Unhealthy behaviors develop over the course of time which means replacing unhealthy behaviors with healthy ones will also require time. Don’t get overwhelmed by making several changes at once. Instead, work toward changing Continued on page S-8

hoosing to live and eat well with plenty of exercise should be a lifelong goal.

Contrary to popular belief, adopting a healthy lifestyle is not a difficult undertaking. In certain instances, convenience may need to be sacrificed in favor of nutrition, but many people find that living healthy is not nearly as difficult as they assumed it would be when they initially decided to make a change. When we decide to start living healthier, many of us mistakenly assume we must abandon our existing habits entirely and start from scratch. But that’s not necessarily so. Choosing to live healthier does not mean you need to completely overhaul your existing lifestyle. Keep in mind these easy ways to start living healthier every day. Eat more fruits and vegetables. One of the best and easiest ways to live healthier is to begin eating more fruits and vegetables. Instead of unhealthy snacks like potato chips and cookies, snack on a piece of fruit, and never sit down to a meal unless you include some vegetables to go along with the main course. Studies have shown that men and women whose diets are high in fruits and vegetables are less likely to develop certain types of cancers, including cancers of the digestive tract. In addition, the United States Department of Agriculture notes that people whose diets are rich in fruits and vegetables have a lower risk for heart disease, including heart attack and stroke. Slow down your eating routine. Some people may already be eating the right foods, but they may just be eating too much of them. It takes time for your body to let you know it’s had too much to eat, so eating too fast can increase your risk of overeating. While eating, try to limit distractions that can take your attention away from how much you’re eating. If you’re always watching television or checking emails on your phone while eating, try a few days of distraction-free, careful eating, and you may find yourself eating less and feeling more energized after a meal. Skip the second glass of wine. The much publicized medical benefits of wine are somewhat misleading, according to many medical experts.According to the Mayo Clinic, when consumed in moderation, red wine can help prevent heart disease. That’s because alcohol and antioxidants found in red wine have been shown to increase levels of highdensity lipoprotein, often referred to as“good” cholesterol, and protect against artery damage. But wine also contains sugars that can fatten the liver, and a fatty liver can contribute to a host of serious health problems. If you already drink wine, limit yourself to one glass

per day. If you are not a wine drinker, then it’s important to note that many doctors believe the potential benefits of drinking wine do not outweigh the potentially negative consequences associated with alcohol consumption. Get more sleep. Inadequate sleep affects the body in a variety of ways. Many people are aware that one poor night’s sleep is certain to affect their energy levels the following day, but fewer may know of the link between sleep duration and chronic disease. For example, the Harvard Medical School notes that studies have linked insufficient sleep to Type 2 diabetes, as the body’s ability to process glucose can be compromised by poor sleeping habits. Other medical conditions that have been linked to insufficient sleep include obesity, heart disease and mood disorders. While you might be proud of your ability to function on minimal sleep, the long-term effects of insufficient sleep can be dire, so be sure to get at least seven hours of sleep each night.

The latest take on nutrition trends Move over kale. Take a seat flax. These upand-coming superfoods are about to take back the spotlight and elevate your diet to a whole new level of exceptional taste and nutrition. Here are a some 2015 trends worth adopting:

Fermented Foods

Amaranth

While quinoa is the reigning whole grain, those in the know are branching out to take advantage of many of the lesser-known ancient grains such as amaranth, teff and millet. Amaranth has a slightly crunchy texture and, like quinoa, is packed with protein. This grain is also a good gluten-free option for those with celiac disease and similar dietary requirements. Use amaranth as you would other grains — toss it in salads or add it to soups. Or create a hearty breakfast with other classic superfoods, such as blueberries.

From kimchi to kefir, fermented foods are getting more and more attention for their powerful health benefits. Researchers are finding that consuming beneficial bacteria, like that found in fermented foods, can help with a strong immune system, build a healthy digestive system, and positively impact blood sugar and the absorption of certain hormones. Some preliminary studies even suggest it may affect mental health. Great Grandma may have been on to something with all her homemade sauerkraut! As with any food, moderation is key due to the higher amounts of sodium in many fermented foods like kimchi.

dark leafy greens like dandelion greens, collard greens and mustard greens are waiting in the wings to change up the flavors of your salads and sides—and with outstanding nutrition to boot. Dandelion greens, in particular, are an excellent source of vitamins A, K and C, and a good source of fiber, calcium, manganese, iron, and vitamins B1, B2 and B6. Many of these nutrients are often lacking in the average person’s diet, including iron and fiber. Combine these somewhat bitter greens with a flavorful vinaigrette for a tasty salad or sautÊ them with a touch of olive oil and garlic and pair with your favorite lean protein.

honored spot on the tables of emperors, this S-5 uniquely beautiful variety of rice is gaining popularity for its outstanding whole-grain nutrition. According to the Whole Grains Council, black rice contains antioxidants called anthocyanins in amounts similar to blueberries — approximately six times higher than the common brown or white rice varieties. Anthocyanins and other flavonoids like them are believed to have a positive effect on heart health. Use this unique rice as you would other varieties — in stir fries, risottos, soups, sides and even topping salads.

Matcha Green Tea

Black Rice In 2015, be prepared to go green. Matcha, a type of green tea, is popping up in tea shops, smoothies, and even ice cream. Matcha packs a more powerful nutritional punch than other green teas because it is consumed as a powder instead of steeping. In other words, the whole leaves are consumed so you get every last drop of antioxidant goodness. Specifically, matcha tea contains high levels of L-theanine, an amino acid linked to anxiety and stress reduction.

Cleanse for the New Year

M

ost of us are overloaded with toxins whether it’s from the water we drink, food we eat or the air we breathe. According to the World Health Organization, the U. S. rates 48th in life expectancy. We are on the bottom of the list despite how industrialized we are and how many medications we take. There are approximately 82,000 chemicals that can enter your body weekly. Our bodies protect us from these toxins and free radicals by surrounding them in fat. Americans are the most obese people on earth because of what we’re putting into our bodies and all the chemicals we are exposed to. Through nutritional cleansing, one can rapidly reduce these chemicals, lose weight and feel great! Nutritional cleansing gives the body the chance to rest, regenerate and assist in its natural ability to remove toxins and impurities and to promote long-term wellness. Cleansing also revitalizes the body with essential nutrients by infusing the body with healthy nutrients. Cleansing can be compared to changing the oil in your car. We regularly change the oil in our cars because it gets dirty and clogged by pollutants. We drain the dirty oil and replace it with clean oil, which helps our cars to run more efficiently. The same can be said for our bodies. We are regularly bombarded with toxins, impurities in our diets and stress that is often created by our hectic lifestyles. Nutritional cleansing helps the body and organs to do what they are designed to do naturally and remove impurities. The average weight g loss through g a cleansing regimen is approximately 7-9 pounds in about 14 days. Get moving all year long It’s a struggle for many to find time to exercise. If hectic schedules dominated by professional and personal commitments have made it difficult to make exercise part of your daily routine, you might want to consider skipping the snooze button so you can work out in the early morning hours. Early morning workouts have their ups and downs. Glucose levels in the body tend to be low in the morning, when many people wake up with a relatively empty stomach. Low blood glucose levels can cause feelings of nausea and weakness and possibly make you feel faint. In addition, since you likely aren’t moving much while you’re asleep, your joints and muscles are likely less mobile early in the morning than they are in the evening, which can make morning workouts difficult and, if you don’t allow yourself more time to warm up, put your body at greater risk of injury. But morning workouts also can energize you throughout the day, and many people find it easier to consistently exercise in the early mornings than at night, when distractions or long days at the office can affect your motivation to work out. Early morning exercise routines can be difficult to adjust to, but there are some ways to make the adjustment to such regimens go more smoothly.

Make sleep a priority. Prioritizing sleep makes it easier to get out of bed in the morning, when you will face the daily temptation to hit the snooze button and roll over. But if you aren’t sleep deprived, you will find it easier to skip the snooze phase of your morning routine and get right out of bed. Skip the late night talk shows and call it a night earlier, making sure you get between seven and eight hours of sleep each night. Once you establish a new sleep schedule, you will find it easier and easier to get up and hit the gym in the morning. Designate more time to warm up. Early morning workout routines require athletes to warm up more than they would when exercising at other times of the day.As previously noted, your body is perhaps at its least mobile right when you get out of bed, so set aside more time to warm up when you workout in the mornings. Five to 10 minutes of light cardiovascular exercise before you begin your workout can be enough to increase your body temperature and loosen your body up so it’s ready for exercise. Don’t go it alone. The buddy system is effective for many people regardless of when they exercise, but it can be especially beneficial for men and women who want to start working out in the morning. If someone is waiting for you at

the gym or if your significant other is up and ready to go, you’re far less likely to skip a morning workout than you would be if you are going it alone. Eat at your own discretion. Some people simply cannot eat before a workout, while others find working out on an empty stomach makes them faint and weak. The problem many people who work out in the early morning encounter with regard to eating before their workouts is they simply don’t have the time to eat and afford their body enough time to turn that meal or snack into fuel that will benefit their workout. A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that eating a meal 45 minutes before a moderate-intensity workout enhances exercise capability. But morning exercise enthusiasts typically find they do not have that spare 45 minutes to wait around while their bodies absorb a meal. Eating healthy before exercise, and giving your body adequate time to absorb that meal, can definitely fuel your workout. But if that 45 minutes ultimately compromises your ability to work out, you may want to have a glass of orange juice or a drink that contains carbohydrates so your body has some fuel as you exercise.

Many folks find that mornings are the only times they can consistently exercise. Adjusting to such a routine can be difficult, but there are some ways to make that adjustment easier.

Resolve to make changes that will stick Now’s the time to rethink your habits The start of a new year is a great time to make resolutions to get healthy. While making a resolution is easy, the reality is that many of us usually drop them before January has even ended. Keeping your healthy resolutions can add years to your life so don’t give up. Here are 10 tips for a healthy year. 1. I resolve to maintain a healthy weight. Healthy weight is not about a diet but about a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle has many choices, including a healthy eating plan and regular physical activity. A healthy eating plan doesn’t mean you have to give up your favorite foods, but instead find a better balance so that you only eat some of your favorite higher calorie food less often, or try a lower calorie version.

Make health a priority in 2015

2. I resolve to be more physically active. Set up and stick to a regular physical activity or exercise routine. Start with 30 minutes of an activity you enjoy, three to four times a week. Some good choices are walking, running, swimming, biking, skating, and aerobic dancing. 3. I resolve to rethink my drink. It’s been well documented that sugary drinks are a leading cause of obesity and related health issues in children and adults. Those extra pounds contribute to heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and an increased risk of certain cancers. This year, try and limit the amount of sugar-sweetened drinks you and your family buy and drink.

Continued from page S-1

seated greatly increases the odds of surviving a car accident.

4. I resolve to quit smoking and avoid people who still light up. Cigarette smoking is the single-most preventable cause of illness Second hand smoke is just as bad and can be deadly to nonsmokers who inhale it on a regular basis. Now is the time to quit if you are still smoking.

7. I resolve to keep myself and my family healthy with regular check-ups. Working with your doctor to stay healthy can help prevent problems before they happen. For example, getting regular screening tests, such as mammograms can find breast cancer early when it’s more treatable. And knowing your family history and getting regular eye exams can help detect serious eye diseases such as glaucoma, before permanent damage happens.

5. I resolve to drink moderately, and get help if I have a drinking problem. Of the 10 leading causes of death each year, alcohol is a major contributor. Resolve to never drink and drive and to never ride with someone who has been drinking. And if you, or someone you love, has an alcohol or other drug disorder, get the help you need.

using reusable bags and reduce the number of plastic bags, which end up in landfills and our waterways. 10. I resolve to think positively and to reach out to others. Having a positive attitude about life can greatly contribute to your emotional wellbeing and your health. If you’re feeling stressed, find ways to cope, including counseling if needed. Studies have also shown that having the support of family, friends, co-workers, and your community contributes to a healthier life. Be a friend to others and keep your family and friends close. Remember, it takes time to develop healthy habits so don’t be discouraged if things don’t change right away. What’s important is to try. You can work on one resolution at a time. Don’t give up trying to challenge the things that have not yet changed — and be sure to celebrate the things that have changed.

one thing at a time. Talk about it: Share you experience with family and friends. Consider joining a support group to reach your goals, such as a workout class at your gym or a group of coworkers quitting smoking. Having someone to share your struggles and successes with makes your journey to a healthier lifestyle that much easier. Don’t beat yourself up: Perfection is unattainable. Remember that minor missteps when reaching your goals are completely normal and OK.Don’t give up completely because you ate a brownie and broke your diet, or skipped the gym for a week because you were busy. Everyone has ups and downs; resolve to recover from your mistakes and get back on track. Ask for support: Accepting help from those who care about you and will listen strengthens your resilience and ability to manage stress caused by your resolution. Whether you are making a major change in your life like quitting smoking or a small change, make sure to celebrate your successes big and small. If your goal is to lose weight, don’t wait until you have lost the full amount to celebrate—celebrate the smaller milestones like losing five pounds or making it to the gym four times per week for a month. Celebrate your successes in healthy manner, such as rewarding yourself with a new workout outfit or gym shoes.

A Better Kind of Cancer Care

“I came to Winthrop because treating pancreatic cancer absolutely requires a collaborative, team approach.

Dr. John D. Allendorf is head of Winthrop’s Pancreatic Cancer Program and Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery. He joined Winthrop from the largest university hospital in New York City. A renowned pancreatic surgeon and innovator in robotic surgery, Dr. Allendorf and his team are giving new hope to pancreatic cancer patients.

“What’s important is to have a group of specialists that are expert in their respective fields and dedicated to a common problem. Physicians, nurses and other providers who work well together in an institution that encourages teamwork. Here at Winthrop we have six to eight physicians from different specialties all focused on each individual cancer patient. That is uncommon across the country and unique on Long Island.
