Welcome to this year’s Glen Cove Community Guide — your ultimate companion to everything that makes Glen Cove such a dynamic, welcoming and exciting place to live!

We’re delighted to present this special annual supplement to the Glen Cove Herald and to reintroduce the Glen Cove Community Guide — a resource designed to celebrate, inform and connect. Whether you’ve called Glen Cove home for decades or have just joined our vibrant city, this guide is your gateway to everything local.

• Our rich local history and legacy

• A look at how our schools are shaping future generations

• Lifelong learning and resources at the library

We’ve spotlighted two-year-old Joshua Torres on our cover. His gleeful expression is representative of how residents respond to their beloved city gem: Morgan Memorial Park. Nestled along the Long Island Sound, the 40-acre waterfront park offers breathtaking views, tranquil walking paths, a welcoming beach, and a scenic setting for summer concerts and community gatherings. Gifted to the city by financier J.P. Morgan in memory of his wife, the park — completed in 1932 — continues to serve as a cherished hub for residents and visitors alike. Its pavilion and newly restored seawall stand as proud symbols of Glen Cove’s enduring community spirit. A favorite destination for all ages, children and families enjoy the playground, the open lawn and spending time on the beach, along with picnicking and meeting up with friends and neighbors.

We also celebrate the enthusiasm and dedication of the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce and the many organizations that help keep our city thriving. From hosting the annual Culinary Delights event at the Glen Cove Mansion to awarding scholarships to local students, these efforts reflect the pride and generosity that define Glen Cove.

This guide is brought to you in partnership with the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce, and we’re honored once again to serve as the Chamber’s official publication.

As always, we hope you find the Glen Cove Community Guide both useful and inspiring — and we thank you for making the Glen Cove Herald part of your week, every week.

Thanks for reading, and here’s to a wonderful summer — and great year — in Glen Cove!

Warm regards,

A LETTER FROM THE MAYOR OF GLEN COVE

Glen Cove continues to shine as a truly special place to call home. With spring in the air, there’s renewed energy all around — longer days, warmer weather and a calendar full of activities that bring neighbors together.

We’re proud to be a “city” with a small-town feel, where people choose to raise a family, volunteers pitch in and community spirit thrives. From our walkable downtown to our scenic waterfront, Glen Cove offers something for everyone.

This year brings even more improvements across our parks and recreational spaces. Morgan Memorial Park has undergone a beautiful renovation, with repairs to the pavilions and Tea House. Pryibil Beach now features an upgraded fishing pier and new volleyball court. At John Maccarone Memorial Stadium, new backstops enhance the experience for players and fans alike. We’ve also added new scoreboards and lighting at Pascucci Field — part of our ongoing commitment to youth sports and family recreation. We are deeply committed to restoring our golf course to its days of glory.

Spring marks the return of Little League baseball and softball, spring soccer, and lacrosse, filling our fields with young athletes and proud parents. Summer brings the Downtown Sounds Music Series, hosted by the BID, returning Friday nights, and the beloved Morgan Park Summer Music Festival, which fills our shoreline with live music on Sundays. Garvies Point once agains welcome the Deep Roots Farmers Market, offering fresh local produce and a festive community atmosphere on Saturdays from May 31 through Nov. 1.

Glen Cove continues to thrive, with two exciting new waterfront attractions joining our list of summer activities — Port Tiki, offering festive cruises across the Sound, and Never Enuff Fishing, now operating two charter boats from Garvies Point. Three waterfront restaurant locations offering dock-and-dine access give us even more ways to enjoy our beautiful shoreline. Throughout the city, our 95 restaurants serve up a diverse range of dining experiences, from quick bites to elegant meals.

Be sure to mark your calendars for a few of our most beloved events — our Memorial Day

Roksana Amid/Herald This year, City Hall held its first vow renewal ceremony. Mayor Pamela Panzenbeck spoke of her personal insights from decades of marriage and as a grandmother of seven.

Parade, the Vintage Baseball Game, and our festive 4th of July Bike Parade and Fireworks. These gatherings celebrate all that makes Glen Cove such a connected, vibrant community.

We are committed to protecting both our environment and public health. Glen Cove has proudly maintained its Tree City USA designation for 23 consecutive years. Through special recycling programs — and yes, the dumpsters are back — we continue to invest in the cleanliness and natural beauty of our city. Residents can obtain their 2025 beach sticker still free of charge.

Whether you’re enjoying the view at Morgan Park, dining across town, cheering at City Stadium, or joining a community celebration, Glen Cove is a place where memories are made and traditions are honored.

It’s a great time to live “on” Long Island — and right here in Glen Cove.

Sincerely,

Mayor Pamela Panzenbeck

Acity with an evolving

Nestled along the North Shore of Long Island, Glen Cove is a city steeped in rich history, shaped by waves of immigration, industry, and innovation. Long before it became a thriving suburban enclave, Glen Cove was home to the Matinecock, an Algonquian-speaking Indigenous people who lived off the land and waterways. In the mid-1600s, English settlers arrived, and the area — then known as Musketa Cove — was established as part of the Town of Oyster Bay. Its name was changed to Glen Cove in 1834 to avoid confusion with nearby Mosquito Cove, reflecting both a sense of identity and a desire to attract visitors and commerce.

By the 19th century, Glen Cove emerged as an industrial hub with a bustling waterfront. Its proximity to New York City

and Long Island Sound made it ideal for shipping, and enterprises like the Duryea Starch Works and Pratt Zinc Works flourished. Steamships brought passengers to and from Manhattan, making Glen Cove an accessible retreat for wealthy urbanites. The arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in 1867 further connected the community to the city, paving the way for economic and residential growth.

Glen Cove also gained prominence during the Gilded Age, when prominent families like the Pratts, Morgans and Phippses built grand estates on its rolling hills and coastal bluffs. These estates, part of the famed “Gold Coast,” showcased opulence and architectural splendor. Many of these properties have since been repurposed into public spaces, such as

the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, housed on the former Herbert L. Pratt estate, and the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County, once part of the Welwyn estate.

The 20th century brought suburbanization, demographic shifts, and civic evolution. Glen Cove officially separated from Oyster Bay to became a city in 1918, one of only two cities in Nassau County. Its shipyards and factories played key roles in both World Wars, and its diverse neighborhoods grew to reflect the stories of Italian, Irish, Puerto Rican, Polish, and more recently, Central and South American families who found a home here.

According to the most recent U.S.

Census data, Glen Cove has a population of approximately 27,879 residents. The city is notably diverse: about 62 percent identify as white, 14 percent as multiracial, 5 percent as Black or African American and 33 percent of the population identifies as Hispanic or Latino, highlighting the city's rich multicultural tapestry.

Today, Glen Cove balances its historic charm with modern revitalization. From its vibrant downtown and community events to its parks, beaches and cultural landmarks, Glen Cove stands as a city proud of its past and actively shaping its future — one rooted in resilience, diversity and a deep sense of place.

Nosh Delivers

The food relief nonprofit began during the Covid-19 pandemic and continues to support hundreds of Glen Cove families each week. Volunteers pack and deliver nutritious groceries directly to homes, ensuring access for seniors, immigrants and low-income households. Nosh partners with local farms, stores and organizations to rescue food and reduce waste. Donating shelfstable items, volunteering during packing hours, or giving financial support helps Nosh continue its mission. Located at the VFW at 15 Hill St., Nosh is more than a pantry — it’s a vital community lifeline that strengthens food security with dignity and compassion.

Glen Cove is a city rich in heart, heritage and community connection. Its calendar is filled with events that do more than entertain — they inspire, uplift, and unite. Whether it's feeding families through Nosh Delivers, honoring veterans with the Tribute and Honor Foundation or raising support for animals in need at Cove Animal Rescue, the city’s signature gatherings reflect the values of its people. From lively waterfront celebrations to meaningful local traditions, these organizations capture the spirit of the city.

By sponsoring events, donating or attending programs, folks can show appreciation for those who’ve served. Tribute and Honor not only honors sacrifice — it also advocates for resources and healing for Glen Cove’s bravest citizens.

Preserving the and the

Glen Cove is more than a scenic coastal city — it’s a hub of culture and history. With a trio of unique museums, the city offers residents and visitors a chance to journey through time, explore the natural world, and confront the lessons of humanity's darkest moments.

At the North Shore Historical Museum, located in the heart of the city on Glen Street, the story of the city's past comes to life. Housed in the beautifully restored

former courthouse, the museum preserves and shares the legacy of Glen Cove and surrounding North Shore communities. From Native American artifacts to exhibits about the city’s Gilded Age estates and prominent families, the museum is a treasure trove for history enthusiasts. Rotating exhibitions, lectures, and school programs engage the public in exploring Glen Cove’s transformation from a quiet village to a vibrant suburban city.

Greg Oliver Bodine captivated the audience as Charles Dickens, recounting the transformative tale of "A Christmas Carol" with passion and theatrical flair at the North Shore Historical Museum.

Just down the road at the Garvies Point Museum and Preserve, visitors are invited to dig even deeper literally and figuratively. This museum specializes in regional geology and Native American archaeology. With hands-on exhibits and life-size dioramas, it provides an educational experience for all ages. Outside, the 62-acre preserve features coastal forest trails and a shoreline that attracts birdwatchers and nature lovers alike. It’s one of the few places on Long Island where families can study fossils inside and then take a nature hike through ancient glacial landscapes just steps away.

Perhaps the most emotionally profound experience awaits at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County, located within the historic Welwyn Preserve. This site not only preserves the memory of Holocaust victims through survivor testimonies and artifacts, but it also teaches lessons of tolerance, justice and human rights. Educational programs target students, law enforcement and the broader community, offering tools to combat hate and promote inclusion. The surrounding gardens and wooded trails provide a peaceful contrast to the powerful stories shared inside.

WEDNESDAY-SUNDAY

FRIDAY,

Courtesy Christopher Judge Oliver Schweiger enthusiastically joined in North Shore Village Theatre's '"demolition party" to mark the begining of its transformation.

In many ways, putting out a newspaper each week is an interactive process. We need your participation, so we offer you — our readers and partners — a reminder of how and when to reach us.

To tell us what’s going on in Glen Cove or news of upcoming events sponsored by civic, service, religious or community organizations, the deadline is 10 a.m. the Friday prior to publication. Notices are printed free of charge.

We also welcome the news of your family life, your business life and your social life. We accept, at no charge, obituaries and Neighbors in the News items, including awards, honors, births, graduations, marriages and promotions. Send these items to ramid@liherald.com.

We value your opinions, and provide a forum for them in our popular Letters to the Editor space. Letters are accepted until 5 p.m. the Friday prior to publication.

The Herald also offers tours of its Garden City headquarters and printing plant for schools, scouts and other community groups. To schedule a tour, contact Michael Romero at (516) 569-4000, Ext. 235, or email mromero@liherald.com.
