FREEPORT GUIDE
a letter from the
publisher Freeport: rich history, social connections Welcome to the Freeport Guide, a special publication of the Freeport Herald Leader in cooperation with the Freeport Chamber of Commerce. The Freeport Guide is an “owner’s manual” to the village, for newcomers and old-timers alike. As editor Nadya Nataly can attest, producing the Guide is an eye-opening experience. After more than two years of publishing the Herald Leader, we thought Stuart we knew Freeport pretty well. But as you’ll see in Richner these pages, the village has an amazingly rich social fabric. So many services and organizations are available to residents. No matter what your interests, age, religion or needs, chances are there’s a group for you in this book. Whether you’re a visitor or life-long resident, we’re sure you’ll find something new and surprising in these pages. Year-round, Freeport is a great place to live, work and play, but it is most alive in the summer, when the village’s heritage as a port and seafaring town comes to the fore, and visitors flock to the Nautical Mile for world-class seafood and entertainment. That’s why we’ve timed the Guide for Memorial Day weekend, the traditional start of the summer season. We hope you enjoy reading the Guide and find it useful. We also hope you enjoy reading the Freeport Herald Leader every week. Not getting the paper every week? Home delivery to your mailbox each week is totally free. See our ad on Page 11 or go to www.LIHerald.com/subscribe to sign up, and start your free subscription. Enjoy your summer. It’ll be gone before you know it! Stuart Richner Publisher

elcome to the Incorporated Village of Freeport on Long Island’s beautiful South Shore. Though our village is world-renowned for our beautiful waterfront “Nautical Mile,” Freeport is far more to offer. Freeport is a prime example of economic progress and success on Long Island, as national and international companies Robert T. Kennedy have ended their far-and-wide searches and brought their business to Freeport. We also boast a thriving small business community, with friendly merchants, mom-and-pop shops and restaurants, and vibrant walkable areas. With six straight years of no tax increases, Freeport remains one of Long Island’s most desirable places to live, own a home, operate a business and raise a family. Law enforcement and village safety remain a top priority for Freeport. Our village police and first responders do an excellent job of keeping our village and its residents safe. Over the past few years, we have implemented Operation Safe Streets, which has produced remarkable results and caused crime to decrease in the village by nearly 54 percent since it was first implemented four years ago. Freeport also is doing its part to create a safe and sustainable future for Long Island, through fortifying our shores with storm preparedness measures in cooperation with the Army Corps of
Engineers, reinforcing our electrical capabilities with the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery, and leading the fight for Nassau County village’s fair and equitable portion of sales tax revenue. Freeport's electric power plant allows businesses and residents to purchase electric power with a savings of roughly 43 percent compared to the surrounding communities. In addition, Freeport's Water Department affords a 37 percent saving to our residents and businesses. Freeport prides itself as the “Boating and Fishing Capital of the Northeast,” beginning with the world-famous Nautical Mile that welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors to Freeport’s shores each year. Along the strip, you will find dozens of friendly merchants, mom-and-pop shops, renowned waterfront dining, family fun and a beautiful view of the sunset over the placid Randall Bay. Throughout the year, this commercial strip hosts festivals and celebrations displaying much of what Freeport, and Long Island, has to offer — We encourage you to join us. I am honored to serve as the mayor of this wonderful village and take pride in the tremendous progress that we have made. I encourage you to explore all that our village has to offer and enjoy our hometown throughout the year. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for visiting us. You are always welcome in the wonderful Village of Freeport.
Sincerely,
Robert T. Kennedy

Freeport is not only the second largest village in the state but also one of the most ethnically and racially diverse waterfront communities on the South Shore. With a population of 43,508, Freeport is home to some of Long Island’s top-notch restaurants and charter boats leaving regularly on fishing trips from the Nautical Mile — making it one of the coolest destinations for food and summer fun. The summer season officially kicks off Memorial Day weekend and is celebrated with the annual Nautical Mile and Blues Festival the first weekend of June. The Nautical Mile is located on Woodcleft Avenue, which runs along the west side of Woodcleft Canal, the waterfront strip that has been ranked number seven on the list of 20 coolest towns in the U.S. by the travel website, Matador Network, which it defines as places that have “their own economic/local heart,” “cool natural features” and “a global citizenry feel.” Freeport has made a tremendous comeback since Hurricane Sandy in 2012 with the entire Nautical Mile revitalized and a number of homes elevated. Village residents continue to give back to their hometown, whether through canal cleanups, rebuilding efforts or community service through the nonprofit group, the Friends of Freeport, which has supported displaced storm victims since 2012. And though the Mile is one of Freeport’s claims to fame, the south part of the village has several canals that allow access to the Atlantic Ocean through salt marshes. Freeport also has extensive small-boat facilities and a resident fishing fleet, as well as charter and open water fishing boats, allowing the avid boating community to spend leisure time on the water. The village is 28 minutes from John F. Kennedy International airport and has accessible public transportation through the Long Island Rail Road and the NICE bus service. During summer, Freeport is the gateway to Jones Beach, one of the largest state beaches in New York. Freeport is a close-knit community and a magical place with a little something for everyone.

Greetings from the
Freeport Chamber of Commerce The weather warms and the summer months approach us and remind us how great the Village of Freeport truly is. Freeport is home to a diverse mix of businesses. Whether you are looking for a tasty restaurant or fun outdoor activities, you will find it here. Freeport serves as the perfect location to run your daily errands in our local village shops along Merrick Road or Main Street, enjoy time with family and friends on the Nautical Mile, or relax in one of our many parks. There is no shortage of activities and entertainment in our village. Jenny Jorge In the coming months we will be full of activities to enjoy. We have our beautiful Memorial Day Parade on May 27. Our local children, law enforcement, fire department and other community organizations will march down Merrick Road, remembering those who have fallen for our country. Our Freeport Village Festival will happen along the Nautical Mile on June 1 full of pop-up shops and delicious food to try. Our Freeport Fire Works show celebrating our Independence Day will take place July 6. In August, we will welcome the U.S. Navy midshipmen along the Woodcleft canal, and our canoe races will bring joy to our residents and businesses as they compete in Cow Meadow Park. Throughout the rest of the year, we have activities such as our golf outing in September that brings businesses together for a fun day on the links and then dinner and drinks to network after. The cool months of fall give us a chance to enjoy the various clam chowders from our restaurants in the Fall Festival and Halloween Parade. Everyone will get a chance to feel the holiday spirit in December when the chamber puts up our holiday lights and hosts the Light and Boat Parade. The local Chamber of Commerce serves to unite the community and advance our local businesses. We have a multicultural community that deserves an active chamber to represent them. The chamber meets every Tuesday for a luncheon at one of our local restaurants and hosts other local networking events for our business owners. Visit our website and find listings of all our events for the village and the chamber. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook, and you will see the fun that Freeport has for all. Take advantage of all Freeport has to offer. If you have not already joined the chamber, make it a point to participate and make our Village of Freeport bigger, better and stronger than it already is! Happy summer to all!

The Red Devils celebrated their second L.I. Class I title in three years and sixth overall after holding off William Floyd, 20-19, at Hofstra in 2018.
Freeport captures Long Island championship
By Tony Bellissimo
T
he most-anticipated game of the 2018 Long Island football season lived up to all the hype at Hofstra as undefeated Freeport and undefeated William Floyd battled down to the wire for the Class I title. And for the fifth time in as many meetings, the Red Devils found a way. Senior Jordan Jackson blocked the potential game-tying extra point with 8:18 remaining and had an interception on the final play as Freeport captured its second L.I. championship in three years and sixth overall with a thrilling 20-19 victory before a spirited crowd of 3,500. “Coach [Russ] Cellan told us early in the year to be prepared to play a one-point game somewhere along the way,” said Jackson, who picked off Floyd quarterback Mack Driver’s desperation heave at the Freeport 28 and ran out the final five seconds, finishing with a victory slide. “It’s such an amazing feeling,” he added. “I love this team so much, and the LIC is what we’ve worked for all season.”
Jackson also caught one of junior quarterback Terrance Edmond’s two touchdown passes, a 13-yarder to open the scoring. Edmond had 153 yards passing and 68 rushing. Sophomore Jayvian Allen had a 22-yard touchdown reception, and senior Justin Lescouflair a go-ahead 58-yard touchdown run on his lone carry, snapping a 13-13 tie with 2:06 remaining in the third quarter. “I’ve been coaching 35 years, and this game ranks right up there in terms of excitement,” Cellan said. “It was everything it was hyped up to be. It was a heavyweight fight between the two best teams in the state.” The Red Devils, who overcame 16 penalties totaling 162 yards, needed just 14 seconds to answer and led 13-6 at the half on Allen’s 22-yard touchdown grab, set up by senior Ja’juan Warren’s long kickoff return. It was the first game all season Freeport wasn’t in cruise control at intermission. On the eventual winning touchdown, Lescouflair busted up the middle behind senior center Jaden Richardson and was instantly off to the races.

Welcome to
Freeport Public Schools Taking the next giant leap
T
he 2018-2019 school year was a time when students took a giant leap into their studies. This year, breakfast and lunch programs were offered at no charge to all students. The district has met the requirements for the national Community Eligibility Program. However, any second meals or al la carte items are charged. The district has also added two Advanced Placement courses, including AP Statistics and AP Capstone Research, bringing the number of Advanced Placement courses offered to 24. The Pathways program also began this year as well. Pathways is a multi-year program that offers paths of academic and technical study along with exposure to aligned careers. It links student learning to the knowledge and skills needed for future education and careers. Freeport High School students use their Naviance accounts to connect their academic achievement to their postsecondary goals. This will allow the district to rate if students are meeting the College and Career Readiness Standards. J.W. Dodd Middle School will host a Freshman Seminar to prepare students for high school. The curriculum has been embedded across health, business, social studies and computer science courses. Phase 3 of the Smart School Bond Act has begun with Chromebooks given to each student at Dodd. This will year the students at Atkinson are expected to receive Chromebooks. Based on increased mental health needs nationwide, the New York State Education Department has mandated that mental health curriculum is included for students. In addition to enhancing the curriculum already offered through health and physical education courses, the district expanded its Youth Empowerment Seminar program, social-emotional learning and anti-bullying programs. The district will also offer Mindfulness as an elective course at Freeport High School. The Freeport School District was honored as one of 13 districts nationwide to make a live connection with the International Space Station. The opportunity gave students a memorable opportunity to speak with astronaut Scott Tingle aboard the International Space Station. The district shared their excitement to have Nobel laureate Dr. Ranier Weiss, speak with students about the discovery of gravitational waves and the scientific significance. Freeport Public Schools also partnered with Long Island Family Health Centers through Nassau University Medical Center to open a School-Based Health Clinic in Freeport High School. The clinic is scheduled to open in November and will be funded through a grant. Students attending Freeport High School will have access to their health care through this clinic. The district also upgraded schools through capital reserve funds at no additional cost to taxpayers, including upgrading science labs at Dodd, replacing the Dodd elevator, working on
the four classroom extensions at Atkinson that will replace the portables, air conditioning in some classrooms, casework and flooring in Atkinson, and entry vestibules planned for Archer, Dodd, Giblyn and Freeport High schools. Dollars for Scholars The Freeport Dollars for Scholars chapter is a nonprofit foundation that supports the academic success of students who reside in the Village of Freeport. Funds raised are used for scholarships given to students graduating from sixth grade at Atkinson Intermediate School, eighth grade at Dodd Middle School and 12th grade at Freeport High School. They also reach out to private and parochial high school students. The awards ceremony is held every May at Freeport High School. The Parent Teacher Associations The Freeport Council of Parent Teacher Associations is a member of the Nassau District PTA of the New York State Congress of Parents and Teachers and is a branch of the National PTA. The Council coordinates the activities of the individual school PTAs.

After a win over Metro West Water, Dazzling Spa players cheered and congratulated one another at Randall Park in Freeport last summer.
Softball league batting a thousand through summer

t was like a scene from a baseball movie. The park lights shone brightly at the top of the fourth inning, the bases were loaded, and the crowd held its breath as the sound of a bat cracking a ball into the sky echoed across Randall Park in Freeport. That was one softball game last summer. There have been many such games since May 25, 2018, when Elvis Baez, 39, and his friend Frank Peña, 42, joined forces to launch the Freeport Men’s Softball League. The league, they say, is a passion project and an opportunity to challenge others to friendly, but fiercely competitive games of softball. The league plays every Friday night through the end of the August. The men bought 800 softballs, which they believed would be enough to make it through the league’s championships. The Freeport
Men’s Softball League has more than 100 players and five teams sponsored and named after local Freeport businesses — Dazzling Spa, Work ‘N Wear, Metro West Water, Guy Lombardo Food Center and Gala Food Supermarket. Besides the players, each week a string of team managers, umpires, scorekeepers and even a live D.J. attend the games in Randall Park. For Baez and Peña, starting the league was also a way to become role models in the community. They have

hopes of using their love for the game to influence teenagers to consider joining the league so they stay out of trouble, according to Baez. “There’s such a negative stigma about Latino men,” Baez said. “We want to change the conversation and share this with them and our community to help keep them off the streets.” Though the league primarily comprises Hispanic men from all parts of Latin America, anyone who wants to play can join, Peña said. “If a woman wants to join us,” Baez said, “we wouldn’t oppose it. We’re here to play.” “We’re open to anyone who wants to participate and play a good game,” Peña said. “At the end of it, it’s about coming out here and playing a good game of softball.”

Freeport Memorial Library Homebase for information and social connections Freeport Memorial Library is a second home to so many local residents, from children to older adults. Kids can take part in fun activities, check out books and use the computers in a designated Children’s Room, while young adults can hang out in the Teen Resource Activity Center, where they can receive homework help, and read hardcover books and e-books. Adults often use the Computer and Career Center to seek work opportunities, or they may simply want to check out a book, movie or CD. And any Freeporter can register for a number of different programs and engage in volunteer opportunities. The library also offers free museum passes to Freeporters. Families and individuals can check out passes to visit museums in New York City and on Long Island. The library also serves as a central meeting location for a number of local clubs and organizations. Several self-help

and rehab groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, also use the library as a safe place to meet. There’s often an exhibit, a lecture or an author meet-and-greet. And the library is an ideal — that is, quiet — place to study or meet up with friends and neighbors. The library works with the Long Island Arts Council to showcase the work of local Freeport artists. Each exhibit highlights works in multiple mediums and includes

‘Sailing Through History’ Arts council, library unveil new mural By Nadya Nataly With a cut of the red ribbon, the new mural commemorating Freeport’s history became a fixture to add to the village’s charm on April 11. The Long Island Arts Council at Freeport undertook the project after winning an AARP Community Challenge Grant last fall. In addition to the grant, the arts council, Mount Sinai South Nassau Communities Hospital and a GoFundMe campaign collected additional funds for the mural. The council, with the support of the Freeport Memorial Library board of trustees, decided that the blank wall to the left of the library’s main entrance would be perfect for the new art. After hosting an open call for mural proposals, the council chose Ji Yong Kim, an artist originally from South Korea who resides in Brooklyn, to paint an “Ode to Freeport.” Kim is also an adjunct professor at Nassau County Community College and Raritan Valley Community College in New Jersey. His works range from video to mixed media. He is also artist-in-residence at ChaShaMa in Brooklyn. Kim’s interpretation of village history,

he said, captured all of the elements that have made Freeport what it is today. At first glance, the mural is a massive boat with flags that read, “The Heart of the Sunrise Trial” and “The Boating and Fishing Capital of the East.” The Freeport Herald Leader helped sponsor a mural-naming contest. At a council meeting, Caleb Holin, 10, a fifthgrader at Atkinson Intermediate School, said the mural must include boats. That’s when, Dresner said, “Sailing Through History” was proposed, which became
“Sailing Through Freeport’s History.” Kim said he wanted the mural to be interactive and playful. Exploring his idea, he painted the mural similar to the late 1980s-1990s video game “Donkey Kong,” and like the video game, the mural became a boat that had ladders and barrels. Some of the landmarks included Freeport’s second bank, the Crystal Lake Hotel, the library, the Moser Building and more. Kim painted the mural over two months.

Nautical Mile &
Blues Festival opens the summer season on the Mile
T
he Nautical Mile and Blues Festival, which runs in tandem with the Nautical Mile fetes, opens the summer season in Freeport. In 2019 the celebration marks its 33rd year. The festival is one of Freeport’s long running traditions that welcomes the greater Long Island community, drawing thousands to Woodcleft Canal for a day of merriment. Visitors have the opportunity to stroll the Nautical Mile and shop. Specialty foods are offered up and down the Mile from local vendors and restaurants. To give that island feeling, steel drum bands play, and at Sea Breeze Park, there is always a long lineup of acts performing at the Blues Festival. There are also plenty of kid-centered activities including face-painting and the rides at Sea Breeze Park. Adults have their own recreational opportunities, including boat rides and fishing. Annually, the mayor and local dignitaries hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon to help kick off the festivities. The Mile Festival has something for everyone good food, great music and lots of wholesome family fun for the kids. Vendors, some representing groups and clubs in Freeport, are also present.

Pet Rescues
Bobbi and the Strays In the summer of 1995, Roberta “Bobbi” Giordano was driving on a busy street when she saw a car hit a dog — and then drive away. She immediately came to the dog’s aid, taking him to a vet for care. Soon after, in 1998, she established Bobbi and the Strays, a non-profit, no-kill animal rescue organization in New York — with an adoption center in Queens and a shelter on Long Island. Located at 2 Rider Place in Freeport, that shelter rescues stray dogs and cats from the streets, situations of abuse and neglect, and “death row” at kill shelters in New York. You can help by becoming a dog walker, “Bobbi Buddy,” cage cleaner, animal or supply transporter, or by helping at an adoption event. For more information, call (516) 378-4340, email info@bobbicares.org or visit http://www.bobbiandthestrays.org All About Cats All About Cats Rescue is a recognized not-for-profit organization in Freeport. Its mission is to improve the welfare of stray and abandoned cats and kittens throughout Long Island. The group
aims to achieve this through the rescue, rehabilitation and placement of felines living in animal shelters or on the streets, or which have been neglected or abused. At 111 E.ß Sunrise Highway, the organization educates the public on responsible pet ownership and is dedicated to ending the tragedy of pet overpopulation by opposing pet stores selling live animals and irresponsible overbreeding of companion animals. You can help by working with publicity, fundraising, the adoption process or even spending time with cats and kittens. For more information, call (516) 379-2287 or visit http://www.allaboutcats.org/home/. Our Best Friends Rescue Our Best Friends Rescue is a nonprofit organization that fosters dog ownership on Long Island and in other parts of the United States. For the last 12 years, the organization has worked to provide temporary homes for dogs of all ages and breeds, regardless of their medical conditions, with the intent of finding them permanent homes. he Freeport Police Department was established in 1893 and is now made up of more than 100 sworn members. The department works alongside neighborhood watch committees, civic associations and local nonprofits as partners in crime prevention. The Freeport Police Department was also the first department in Nassau County to implement body cameras. Three years ago, the village installed a fiber-optic system of license platereader cameras that continually feed data into a central monitoring station, down the hall from the mayor’s office in Village Hall. The cameras read up to 190,000 plates a day, and officials check for outstanding summonses and arrest warrants. Last year the village impounded some 1,600 vehicles, thanks to the cameras. Additionally, 72 people were arrested — including a man who was wanted for murder in Virginia — and 7,000 summonses were issued. The FPD has reduced the crime rate by 53 percent in the last five years and 37 percent year to date. When the officers are not patrolling Freeport streets, they’re participating in community events and mentoring students in the public schools. The police and schools work together in the Adopt-A-Cop program. FPD representatives are also available to lead discussions at club and organization meetings about how to read crime trends in the community and spot suspicious activity.

Freeport PARKS Parks are the village’s backyards By Lauren Whyte-Nepaul
P
arks are an important factor of how livable communities are and on how they play a role on the development of children. In Freeport, alone there are eight village parks — Waterfront Park, Frank O. White Memorial Park, Glacken Park, Seabreeze Park, Milburn Creek Park, Cleveland Avenue Field, Martin Luther King Jr. Park and Randall Park, as well as Nassau County’s Cow Meadow Park that are an integral part of neighborhoods. Hometown parks are a place to rest,
relax, and enjoy healthy sporting competitions like Little League baseball games. Each park has something a little different from the others. The Freeport Memorial Library has also been known to host events in the park over the years. While some parks are the home turf for Little League baseball teams, like Randall Park, others, like the newly dedicated, Frank O. White Memorial Park, are home to basketball and tennis courts and houses the Freeport PAL headquarters. During July and August, on Tuesday
evenings, Water Front Park hosts a free astronomy program for children. The Martin Luther King Jr. park has an outdoor kiddie pool and adult swimming pool.
PLAYGROUNDS
Playground facilities are located at:
Maureen Lennon/Herald
Brielle Volcy, 4, was more than happy with the colorful loot she gathered at Freeport’s annual egg hunt in 2018.
Christina DalyHerald
When spring is full bloom, Randall Park is surrounded by pink cherry blooms trees.

Town & County Nassau County Freeport became a village in 1892, but it is also part of Nassau County. Although the village has its own sanitation, electric and water departments, certain county services and facilities are available to Freeport residents. Nassau is governed by an elected Legislature that was formed in January 1996. The Legislature’s 19 districts enable constituents to have greater access to their elected representatives. It includes an independent budget director who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters. The Legislature also enables residents to submit petitions for proposed new laws that legislators are obligated to consider. The legislators serve two-year terms. The 5th District includes the Freeport and represented by two Freeporters — Debra Mulé and Kevan Abrahams. The county executive — currently Laura Curran — serves a four-year term and is the chief administrator. Visit nassaucountyny.gov for more information. Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead is the largest township in the United States, with 142 square miles, a population of roughly 725,000, 34 unincorporated areas, 22 incorporated villages, over 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of city, county and state roads. In 1643, two Englishmen, John Carman and the Rev. Robert Fordham, traveled from Connecticut across the Long Island Sound to Long Island. They represented a group of settlers who wished to purchase from the Indians (the Reuckowacky, the Merockes, the Matinecock, and the Massapequas), the current towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead. In 1644, the Town of Hempstead was founded when a patent was obtained from William Kieft, the Dutch Governor of New Amsterdam. The name Hempstead seems to derive from Hemel-Hempstead in Great Britain, which means town spot. Hempstead grew steadily in the 1800s, and by 1855 it was the most populous town in Queens County, with just under 10,500 people. The town, along with the rest of Long Island, supplied the greater metropolitan area with a multitude of farm products and provided abundant recreational opportunities, including seashore resorts, fox hunting, polo and horse racing. The population peaked at just over 800,000 in 1970, and has now leveled off at 725,000. Hempstead Town has seven elected board members. The supervisor, Laura Gillen, serves a two-year term. The six council members serve four years each. Visit hempsteadny.gov for more information.
