In 1939, the Elmont Memorial and Franklin Square Public libraries were granted charters by the state.

the origin of Franklin Square’s name remains

a mystery. While some have suggested that it is named after founding father Benjamin Franklin, the statesman has no historical connection to the area. Others believe it was named for a local resident whose history is lost to time. In 1956, elmont memorial and H. Frank Carey high schools opened.
