We drive them. We walk them. We live on them. We work, we play — every aspect of our lives can be tied straight back to a street. They are the heart of our community. You can't get anywhere unless you're on a street. In this year's Living in Franklin Square & Elmont, we explore the very streets that make both Franklin Square and Elmont what they are. From the businesses, to the parks, to even the town square. There's a story behind every street, and we hope you'll enjoy these stories, learning more about the community all of us love.

The pandemic tested all of us beyond our limits. Franklin Square and Elmont, however, remain strong. They are communities full of fighters. And as the pandemic shifts to endemic stage and we fully resume our lives, we are all reinvigorated and re-energized.

The past two years were tough for Franklin Square and Elmont, but its always-resourceful people came through once again, just as we did after Hurricane Sandy's wake in Neighbors2012. helping neighbors. That’s what Franklin Square and Elmont are all about. And what it continues to be. We looked out for each other all through the Covid-19 crisis. Everyone stepped up during this challenging time: grocery stores and other necessary retailers, community organizations, civic leaders, local officials, etc. And we can never thank enough our health care workers for their selfless dedication. Now we understand just how resilient we, as a community, are.

A letter from the

Senior Reporter

Throughout the crisis, the Franklin Square/Elmont Herald remained steadfast in informing everyone of the impact of the pandemic, and also all of the great things individuals, stores, police, firefighters, schools and community leaders were doing to keep moving forward. Herald reporters were at meetings, and talking to you and your neighbors, to paint a portrait of a hamlet that may have struggled at times, but one that also is winning.

The church itself dates back to the 19th century, when there were few, if any, organized religious congregations in Franklin Square. At the time, most residents were German-speaking Catholics who attended St. Boniface’s Church in present-day Elmont. The German-speaking Protestants attended the German Presbyterian Church, also in Elmont, while the Englishspeaking non-Catholic Christians favored the Methodist Church in Hempstead.

Geographically the intersection of these places of worship point toward the center of the hamletm but also act as the heart of the Franklin Square community.

Aside from the grandeur of the church and its ever-growing Catholic base, Franklin Square welcomed all.

In the 1940s, the Jewish community organized the Franklin Square Center. The Jewish center’s current place on Pacific and Lloyd streets is where one would find the old St. Catherine’s chapel. This is where the old and the new connect through Franklin Square’s roadway system. In 1956, the Bethel Assembly of God opened on Court House Road.

N

When entering the church, the stainedglass windows to the left and right were specifically crafted in Germany to Monsignor Lutz’s particular specifications to illustrate the life of St. Catherine.

Intersecting streets and intersecting faith

After approximately a year, St. Catherine of Siena was constructed on New Hyde Park Road. Because of its location, the church saw a boon in parishioners. After it opened, the church

In 1908, the Catholics decided to organize their own parish by petitioning the bishop of Brooklyn for assistance. On July 5, 1908, Franklin Square held Mass in the front parlor of the old Kinsey Homestead. That dusty pioneer land is now filled with Franklin Square roads and buildings running through it, but it also was a place that connected its people.

structure itself became far too small, causing the church to grow even more.

Tim Baker/Herald

The parish received its first resident priest in 1913. Four years later, Msgr. Conrad Lutz became pastor, a position he held until 1953. Monsignor Lutz, who planned the new church, had St. Catherine’s become one of the most beautiful public buildings in the area.

ew Hyde Park Road becomes Franklin Avenue right before meeting with Hempstead Turnpike where a favorite gathering spot for churchgoers is located — the Franklin Square Coffee Shop. The three roads lead to several churches, but none so prominent as St. Catherine of Sienna. You can’t miss it with its European edifice.

Near the firehouse is the Franklin Square Library. It was formed back in 1937 thanks to the members of the Monroe Street School

From the firehouse to the library, all is for the community

The department has existed since 1924, making it a cherished relic — just like the hometown heroes. The old firehouse was originally located on Hempstead Turnpike between Madison Avenue and Franklin Street. The volume of traffic on Hempstead Turnpike and the need for modernization resulted in the present-day firehouse shining bright on Liberty Place.

The library is very much a hub for resources, and it has always been even since its time on New Hyde Park Road. Now, in addition to being close to the firehouse, it sits yards away from the Veterans of Foreign Wars building, making it accessible for civic groups to utilize the two arenas.

After 2018, it expanded to include services such as enhanced technology and equipment. The initiative was meant to entice people to come to use the library’s services. The coronavirus pandemic caused the library to shift to virtual programming, which provided popular free at-home services such as Zumba and Yoga.

The park is across the street from the Franklin Square Museum on Naple Avenue, the destination of Franklin Square’s many relics. Naple is more than just a road, but a flashback into the past. It is there that the museum sits, with its treasure trove of memorabilia that documents the community’s heritage. It opened in April 2021, after more than two decades of planning, building and collecting by the Franklin Square Historical Society.

The pews are not only a reminder of a more traditional, past but also a reflection of Franklin Square’s European heritage. The pews were made to match the English Gothic Revival style of the old church buildings.

Immigrants from southern and western Germany purchased the land to be named Franklin Square. Quickly it turned into a vegetable farm, remaining as a Germanspeaking village until the 1920s. It was an enclave for the Germans that developed its own distinctive traditions that endure to this day.

Now, Elmont Road to the north is a hub of local businesses. To its south, the community park. The road is a connector to other major roads within the hamlet.
