We are pleased to present our annual Living In Franklin Square & Elmont, a special supplement to the Franklin Square/Elmont Herald.

Those of us who live here know Franklin Square and Elmont are wonderful, welcoming communities. Our annual guide is a testament to their post-pandemic resurgence. Not only does it include vital information about Franklin Square and Elmont, but it also gives you a look at some of the people and places that represent the best of these neighborhoods.

Think of Living In Franklin Square & Elmont as an “owner’s manual” for newcomers and longtime residents alike. As you’ll see in these pages, there’s an amazingly rich social fabric here. An abundance of services and organizations are available to residents. No matter what your interests, age, religion, or needs, these communities have much to offer.

Both boast a rich history. Take a stroll through Rath Park and find yourself traveling back in time at the Franklin Square Historical Museum. Discover the history of the original German-speaking 1800s farm communities that spanned Franklin Square and Elmont. Get a taste of German culture at Plattduetsche Park, Restaurant and Biergarten or grab a bite at Salvatore’s and King Umberto’s, among other popular restaurants.

In these diverse communities, you can hear more than 80 different languages being spoken. Everyone is always willing to lend a hand, whether it’s a muchneeded meal during the holidays from Giving Back to Community Corporation or fixing up a home with Rescuing Families. Folks here keep the memories alive and are sure to offer a shoulder to lean on when you need some help.

Traditions like the Elmont Memorial Day parade, Ompahfest and the Franklin Square Fall Festival are a mainstay for those who have made Elmont and Franklin Square their home. More than just the Islanders play at UBS Arena, as students pass through for academic lessons and community giveaways. Artists big and small make their way to Elmont, from Chris Stapleton at UBS Arena to many exciting cover artists at the Elmont Memorial Library.

Plus the makeover of the famed Belmont Park area that began with a $1.3 billion project that built UBS Arena continues, as the historic horseracing venue will undergo a $455 million state modernization project in 2024.

Students are nurtured and supported by the wonderful staff of Sewanhaka, Franklin Square and Elmont districts. Whether your family has lived in the area for generations or you’re new in town, there will be a friendly face ready to welcome you here.

Living In Franklin Square & Elmont is published in cooperation with the Franklin Square and Elmont Chambers of Commerce. We are honored to mark another year as these chambers’ official publication.

a message from the franklin square Chamber president

I am honored to be elected to serve as president of the Franklin Square Chamber of Commerce, and I am excited to lead our officers and board of directors in our mission to be a great resource for our membership, business community and residents.

I am dedicated to the prosperity of our member businesses which I personally visit to support them and offer assistance. I plan to increase our membership, which now stands at about 205.

We have a great website, which we update frequently with exciting news for all our member businesses, at FranklinSquareChamber.com. In addition, we post regularly to social media on our Facebook page (@franklin.square.chamber) and our Instagram (@franklinsquarechamber). We act as an information and referral service about Franklin Square and its businesses.

Our chamber works closely with the community by hosting ribbon-cutting and grand opening ceremonies for new businesses. We also donate two scholarships each year to two local high schools. Each year we recognize one Businessperson of the Year at a legislative breakfast. We hosted a Business Expo in 2021, we have an annual Getting To Know You and Business Networking Event. And we had a Fall Fair in 2021 and 2022.

As a business owner for 33 years, I have found consumers believe businesses that are involved in the community and are members of their local chamber of commerce are trustworthy, connected to the community, listen to their customers, and are successful local leaders. Keep your community in business and support your local businesses as often as you can!

Please contact me via text at (516) 319-3647, or email at ldpceo@hotmail.com if you have any comments, questions or suggestions.

Giving Back

to Community on a mission to help

Emilian Emeagwali launched Giving Back to Community as an Elmont nonprofit in 2009 to bring food, quality education and monetary help to undernourished children and families.

The group’s mission is to alleviate the suffering of impoverished children and families in Nigeria and the United States, while also aiming to provide educational opportunities to reduce the rate of illiteracy, improve the quality and standard of schools in low-income communities, award scholarships to support a student’s higher educational goals, and empower marginalized individuals.

Emilian, a physical therapist, said she envisions a society where no one lives in poverty, no one goes to bed hungry, and all children have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Last year, Emilian traveled to Nigeria with six young adults — three of them her children — to distribute food for those in need. Their experience in the African country was eyeopening for them as they saw children struggling for simple things, like a pair of used socks.

Planning to go again this year by herself, Emilian hopes to create an annual end-of-theyear holiday giveaway of not just food, but used clothing, as well as shoes and socks to children and families. Emilian also wants to provide

at least three widows money to begin a small business of their own, while ultimately creating stronger communities and a vibrant local economy.

“I want to educate people that are industrial people that are hardworking widows or women,” she said. “I want to give them money and help them start a sustainable small business.”

Along with the financial resources, Emilian has provided many there with knowledge on how

to run a business. A few of those people have already opened small grocery stores.

Her vision now is to get a physical space to open a food pantry as well as a community center on Long Island, where Giving Back would supply food, and donated winter coats and accessories.

“Having a food pantry space will give us the ability to teach and promote cultural awareness,” Emilian says. “We believe that cultural education is needed to encourage tolerance in our community — especially our children.”

Emilian hears many stories from families — people who are facing hardships

“I see what is happening is the grocery store with the high cost of food,” she sas, noting that the group has distributed winter accessories to a homeless shelter in Queens and veterans homes in Brooklyn. “We will not turn a person back just because they are not from the local area.”

Lynbrook-based Arrow Exterminating Co., has been a strong supporter sponsoring the Give Back to Community 5K Run/Walk in July. Last year, the company donated a large amount of nonperishable food during the annual food drive.

“Arrow’s commitment to help the less privileged in our community is unremarkable and worth emulating,” Emilian said.

And she should know Helping people is Emilian’s calling.

“It gives me a particular joy I can’t explain,” she says. “I can go 24 hours non-stop, and if

I ever get tired, I pick myself up right away. It’s worth it. I am reminded of the many faces, seeing their eyes when you help them, and the gratitude they feel, helping the suffering people. Especially in Nigeria, it just so much.”

Empowering youth

and serving the community

Meera Empowerment does exactly what the nonprofit’s name says: empower youth to make community service a priority. And it was all started in 2021 by Selene Meera Ferdinand, and her mother Savitre.

But how does Selene know what it takes to empower young people? Because she’s still one of them — just 10 years old.

Selene’s journey began when she was just 4 as part of the National American Miss pageants, which transformed her timidness into confidence. Her participation in Girl Scouts expanded her passion for modeling to include community service, but Selene credits her desire to make both interests accessible to all children in her community as the reason for founding the nonprofit.

“We want kids to know how to give back to their communities and make a difference, no matter their age,” Selene says. “We have fundraisers and parties to empower and inspire them to follow their dreams, and never give up.”

Selene teaches Elmont young people — like herself — to give back by combatting hunger and homelessness, and to even contribute to cancer research. With as many volunteers as she can find, Selene hosts an annual fashion show and tea party to raise proceeds that benefit partner charities, including the American Cancer

Society and St. Jude’s Research Hospital.

Selene’s mother, a health care worker at a nursing home, says her position grants her the privilege of letting the youth care for and learn from the elderly residents. Meera participants also volunteer for Island Harvest Food Bank and Building Homes for Heroes. Their fundraising and community service efforts also provide members with educational opportunities.

“Not only do our tea parties raise money,

they teach kids skills like etiquette and communication,” Savitre said. “We often cook at Ronald McDonald House, so while learning to cook as a lifetime skill, they’re also giving back.”

Education and philanthropy go hand in hand, Savitre added, which is a common theme for Meera Empowerment as it expands fundraising efforts to award scholarships to local elementary and high school students.

Meera also selects university-bound seniors to be executive board members, allowing them to list the achievement on college applications, while still learning how to give back.

Selene has co-authored two books in the “Road to the Crown” series, which she wrote with her pageant sisters, all focusing on mental health. Royalties earned from the books are used to fund her nonprofit.

“This year was more successful than the last two years,” Savitre said. “Last year, we gave out one scholarship. This year, we could afford to give two. We’ve gone from covering 10 families with bags of food, to covering 50.”

Based on Meera Empowerment’s recent accomplishments, Selene and her mother are hopeful they can achieve their set goal of taking the local nonprofit nationwide to empower young minds across the country. Although her organization focuses on youth empowerment, Selene says its impact reaches far beyond the children it serves.

“My organization inspires the youth and gives

them the confidence to go after their dreams,” she said. That “can make a huge impact on adults in their life, and the community around them.”

To get involved with Meera Empowerment, contact Savitre Ferdinand at meeraempowerment1@gmail.com.

the Elmont Cultural Center is strong

Mimi Pierre-Johnson recalls driving through Elmont as a child living in Queens, dreaming of living in one of the houses off Dutch Broadway. Years later, Mimi is not just living in one of those very houses, she’s running the Elmont Cultural Center from her home.

Since its founding as a nonprofit in 2009, education has been the invisible string connecting the many issues the cultural center brings to light in the community. Access to food, as well as immigration, housing, environment, water quality and traffic safety are just some of these issues — but it has not been an easy road.

After losing a job she held for more than a decade due to a lack of funding back in 2017, Mimi decided to spend her time breathing new life into the organization. She chose from that day on to dedicate her life to doing whatever was necessary to make the Elmont Cultural Center thrive, regardless of funding.

Framed by the tagline “working together, we are strong” Mimi certainly doesn't go it alone. She has a large coalition of statewide and federal partners in her corner. Together they have made countless impactful changes in the community from traffic lights, to food distributions, to immigration workshops.

But it’s not just these partners that make it all happen. The heart of it all comes from

the community mobilizing, organizing, and spreading the word. Some of the traffic lights, patterns, signage, and filled potholes one might find along Dutch Broadway are a direct result of the community sharing surveys and getting the attention of local legislators.

“When people are engaged in seeing something they want to do, that's what sparks others to want to call their elected officials to

say, ‘This is what I need in my community,’” Mimi says. “And when they can’t get it done, they call us. There's always strength in numbers.”

But even with all that success, there is still one more dream Mimi hopes to fulfill for the Elmont Cultural Center: Raising enough money for a building that’s more than a typical community center or after-school program. Somewhere where there’s a space for the youth, a cultural center for people to find community, somewhere to meet and mobilize, and the opportunity for “an allaround cultural exchange,” Mimi says.

Seeing the changes the cultural center has been able to engineer, Elmont is just as beautiful now as when she used to drive through it as a child. Remembering that 9-year-old Mimi and with the understanding that someone else may have the same dream — she wants to make sure the next generation appreciates what Elmont has to offer here, and continues to pass it on.

“It’s a different demographic than then,” Mimi says, “but we are still pursuing to have the best community, people, and future for the kids.”

Building civic bonds with Rescuing Families

Gina and Vincent Centauro want to make sure no family ever feels forgotten.

As contractors, they have expertise in home renovations. But there is no renovation more important to them than one when a family member has a disability. For those homes, the focus must be on accessibility, safety and comfort.

Yet, the cost of such renovations is out of reach for many families who need it. Which is exactly why the Centauros created Rescuing Families.

Although a small organization, Rescuing Families is the only one of its kind on Long Island. It has nearly a dozen volunteers performing the actual construction on the homes, with

another 30 who help with fundraising and other administrative tasks.

Families requiring renovations to accommodate someone with special needs simply submit an application, which is then evaluated based on the family’s financial situation, disability, condition of the home, and the number — and ages — of children. Rescuing Families sends out a representative for a home visit. And if they make the cut, they’ll join a half dozen families on the waiting list right now to get help from the group.

Each project, of course, can take up to four months to complete.

Once the application is approved, the project is scheduled. When renovations are extensive, the family must move out of the house until the work is completed. If they’re unable to stay with relatives due to the need for wheelchair accommodations, Rescuing Families pays for the

family to reside in an extended-stay hotel.

All materials are donated, including landscaping, sheetrock, concrete and siding. There are other contractors who donate their time, including some from out of state.

National Grid employees, for example, as well as real estate company Keller Williams Legendary in Franklin Square have consistently partnered with Rescuing Families during company-sponsored days of service.

Recently, Gina and Vincent put the work of the group on hold for a few months to concentrate on a project that was closer to home. Gina’s sister Dina, is developmentally disabled, autistic and deaf. The Centauros purchased a house across the street from their own, and put it in trust for Dina so she would never have to worry about moving again.

The house, built in 1927, needed some work, and the couple “patched things up” as they could. But after four years of Dina living in the

house, it was time for some major upgrades. It would be too disruptive for Dina to move out during renovations, so she stayed right on

property while Gina and her team renovated one room at a time. The house needed new flooring, wiring, and insulation, as well as a new roof, siding, kitchen and bathroom.

Unlike projects that might come through Rescuing Families, Gina and Vincent are funding the Dina project themselves. Yet, the same organizations that normally donate materials and labor for the charity’s projects have also stepped up to make the same contributions to “Project Dina.”

“Our volunteers jumped on and they’re actually working to get the project done,” Gina said. “And some of our building sponsors and contractors have come through and volunteered their time for us, which is really a blessing.”

Although Project Dina is a personal project— not under the umbrella of Rescuing Families — it proves how creating the desire to give back can grow. Especially for a couple where everyone knows “how much we help the community,” Gina said.

founder of Gift of Giving, hopes you say ‘hi’

Elizabeth Forbes makes it a point to find at least three people every day and make them happier. And that’s because she has a lot to be happy for herself.

It’s been 10 years since Elizabeth beat stage 4 esophageal cancer with only four sessions of chemotherapy. She credits her recovery to prayer. Her doctor said she was a miracle.

“And 80 to 90 percent of the time, I forgot I had cancer,” Elizabeth said.

At one point, the doctors gave her only three months to live. When she came back for another scan, the cancer was gone. Elizabeth believes this means she has a purpose for being on this Earth.

That’s when she was inspired to give back to her community. When the first of her six sons started high school, Elizabeth would frequently help his friends. But with encouragement from her son, Elizabeth knew she had to expand those efforts.

“Mom, we should do so much more,” her son Glenn told her. “You have the mindset to just talk to people, and it would be nice to just figure out what we can do.”

Elizabeth started the Gift of Giving Foundation in 2019. The organization holds an

annual holiday event near Christmas, where it awards 50 students several prizes each, including a board game and a book.

The aim is to play, read and bond with their families.

The foundation also runs the Student Ambassadors program, where young people visit local businesses over the academic year, and

take on internships in the summer.

“The future leaders are the ones who are going to be taking care of us,” Elizabeth said. “We need to make sure that we provide all the tools that we possibly can.”

Student Ambassadors holds a weekly meeting where the young people learn from others about lives much different from their own. Gift of Giving is working on creating a “Silver Night,” when students can spend time with senior citizens.

“We work,” Elizabeth said. “We come home, we take care of family, we do a great job. But there was always something missing with me. Just giving back to the community, it makes me whole.”

The parents of those in Student Ambassadors are very grateful to Elizabeth for what she does. Like Linsey Swift’s mother, Edwouine.

“My daughter has anxiety,” Edwouine said. “For a long time, because of Covid, she was socially inept. Calling for food delivery was hard for her. Being in this program, Linsey is able

to talk to professionals and schedule her own appointments. Elizabeth has shown so much grace and support to her.”

Elizabeth was initially inspired to be a community leader by her foster mother, Shirley Virgil, who taught her how to be a woman and how to share her voice. Virgil would bring young Elizabeth to community events and volunteer opportunities in the neighborhood — activities an adult Elizabeth absorbed into her own personality.

“It took me a long time to get there,” Elizabeth said, “but she was very patient.”

Elizabeth ended up in a foster family when she was taken out of her home with her eight sisters and five brothers. Still, her mother was a very special woman, Elizabeth said. But, her father would beat her.

“I don’t let anything from my childhood diminish my adulthood,” she said. And if you see her in the street, she hopes you’ll come up and say “hi.” And who knows, maybe she’ll soon have you making a difference in the community, too.

It’s part of many things Elizabeth does for the greater Franklin Square and Elmont communities after surviving what some say was the impossible: Stage 4 esophageal cancer.
