living in Elmont Many of Elmont’s visitors come for the nationally renowned Belmont Park, which hosts the annual horseracing event known as the Belmont Stakes.

Elmont’s boundaries were decided in 1898, when its shift from Queens had been finalized.

Before that, however, Elmont was predominantly farmland and controlled by Dutch settlers.

Belmont Racetrack was completed in 1905, a turning point in its history. Sale of the farmland began thereafter and houses were erected in its place.

Elmont School District includes six elementary schools: Dutch Broadway, Clara H. Carlson, Gotham Avenue, Covert Avenue, Alden Terrace and Stewart Manor. Nearly two thousand students attend Elmont Memorial High School, part of the Sewanhaka Central High School District.

Elmont also has a volunteer fire department and is served by the Nassau County Police Department’s 5th Precinct. Muzzio Tal-

lini leads the Elmont Chamber of Commerce. There are a number of civic associations, such as the Elmont East End Civic Association, that are dedicated to helping residents express their views in organized ways.

Elmont has about 33,000 residents living in about 10,300 housing units, according to the 2010 census.

One of the most prominent features of the community is the Elmont Memorial Library. A beautiful building and venue for a variety of events and entertainment series, the library boasts an auditorium and huge space for town meetings. Thousands visit the library every month for a truly interactive media experience.

Notable natives of Elmont are WNBA President Donna Orender, author Nelson DeMille, comedian Andy Kaufman (buried at Beth David Cemetery) and trainer Cara Castronuova, who has appeared on “The Biggest Loser” television show.

What is now Franklin Square was originally used as grazing land and farmland by settlers near the center of the Hempstead Plains.

By the 1950’s, farmland was rapidly being replaced by homes.

Franklin Square was a major beneficiary of the emigration of people from New York City.

The Franklin Square School District is comprised of the Polk Street, John Street and Washington Street elementary schools.

The nearby Willow Road Elementary School is in Valley Stream District 13. The high schools in the area are Valley Stream North and H. Frank Carey.

Franklin Square has a volunteer fire department and is served by the Nassau County Police Department’s 5th Precinct. Its most notable park is Rath Park, which includes a pool, basketball, handball, tennis, football and baseball fields and a playground.

Local organizations include the Franklin Square Chamber of Commerce, currently led by

Presidents Bruno M. Caracciolo; a historical society; youth football and soccer programs; and Franklin Square Little League.

One of Franklin Square’s oldest and most notable restaurants is Plattdeutsche, which hosts many community events.

Though geographically close to New York City, Franklin Square and Elmont each have ample parks and attractions for residents to escape the constant grind. Historic Belmont Park is more than a racetrack, it’s also a sanctuary for kids and parents to picnic and play

on the sprawling grounds of the 430 acre park. Rath Park in Franklin Square is the central hub for residents looking for a relaxing afternoon. Residents can catch a summer show sponsored by the Franklin Square Civic Association, or play a pick up game of basketball.

Libraries The libraries in Franklin

Square and Elmont serve a vital function for the community. As a meeting place for clubs and organizations, the libraries also serve as havens for students who need to escape everyday destractions. This past summer, both destinations became hubs for the mobile game “Pokemon Go.” As bases for the game, where kids could come and digitally “catch” Pokemon, the libraries capitalized on this and encouraged kids to participate in programs at the library while they were playing the addictive game.

Government

nassau CounTy Nassau County is governed by an elected Legislature, comprising legislators from 19 districts. It includes an independent budget director who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters. The Legislature also enables residents to submit petitions for proposed new laws that legislators are obligated to consider. The 19 county legislators serve two-year terms.

Town of hempsTead Founded in 1644, Hempstead is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people.

Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads.

Hempstead is overseen by a supervisor –– currently Republican Anthony Santino –– and a six-member Council. The six members are each elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the Council members have four-year terms.

The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings, and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the dayto-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for creation and implementation of the town budget.

Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. towN of Hempstead
