Elmont was first settled in the mid-1600s by Dutch settlers. The community remained primarily a loose collection of farms until the late 19th century. In 1898, the community’s borders were finally settled on. The Belmont Racetrack, a centerpiece of the hamlet, opened in 1905, and it has attracted visitors from near and far ever since. Its most prestigious race is the Belmont Stakes, an internationally acclaimed horse-racing competition. Like so many Long Island communities, Elmont underwent a housing boom in the post-World War II era. The Elmont School District includes six elementary schools: Dutch Broadway, Clara H. Carlson, Gotham Avenue, Covert Avenue, Alden Terrace and Stewart Manor. Nearly 2,000 students attend Elmont Memorial High School, part of the Sewanhaka Central High School District. Elmont also has a volunteer fire department and is served by the Nassau County Police Department’s 5th Precinct. Paul Sapienza leads the Elmont Chamber of Commerce. There are a number of civic associations, such as the Parkhurst Civic Association, that are dedicated to helping residents express their views. Elmont has about 33,200 residents living in about 10,300 housing units. One of the most prominent features of the community is the Elmont Memorial Library. A beautiful building and venue for a variety of events and entertainment series, the library boasts an auditorium and large space for meetings. Thousands visit the library every month for a truly interactive media experience. Notable natives of Elmont include WNBA President Donna Orender, author Nelson DeMille, comedian Andy Kaufman (buried at Beth David Cemetery), magician Christopher Sarantakos of “Criss Angel: Mind Freak,” and trainer Cara Castronuova, who has appeared on “The Biggest Loser” television show.

What is now Franklin Square was originally used as grazing land and farmland by settlers near the center of the Hempstead Plains. By the 1950s, homes started to encroach on farmland. Franklin Square was a major beneficiary of the migration of people from New York City. The Franklin Square Union Free School District is consists of the Polk Street, John Street and Washington Street elementary schools. The nearby Willow Road Elementary School is in Valley Stream District 13. The high schools in the area are Valley Stream North and H. Frank Carey. Franklin Square has a volunteer fire department and is served by the Nassau County Police Department’s 5th Precinct. Its most notable park is Rath Park, which includes a pool, basketball, handball, tennis, football and baseball fields and a playground. Local organizations include the Franklin Square Chamber of Commerce, currently led by President Bruno M. Caracciolo; a historical society; youth football and soccer programs; and Franklin Square Little League. One of Franklin Square’s oldest and most notable restaurants is Plattdeutsche, which hosts many community events. Franklin Square has about 29,320 residents living in about 9,600 housing units, according to the 2010 census. Notable natives of Franklin Square include the artist and author Barbara Rosenthal, who wrote for the Franklin Square Bulletin in 1959 at age 11; novelist Alice Hoffman; radio personality Rich Davis; country singer Lisa Matassa; “Jersey Shore” reality television show star Jenni “JWoww” Farley; music journalist and award-winning author Jeff Tamarkin; radio and television host Sean Hannity; NASA astronaut Michael Massimino; professional football player Vinny Testaverde and Major League Baseball player Al Weis.

Banners fly for Franklin Square heroes By Ronny Reyes
A
s Maryanne Grey watched the banners that honored the veterans in her family hoisted up at the Franklin Square Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2718, she began to tear up, feeling not only pride in her family’s history, but also gratitude toward her long-time friend Adrienne McKenna, who spearheaded Franklin Square’s Hometown Heroes Banner program. “This project was Adrienne’s baby, and it took a lot to get it done, to the point where she was almost ready to quit a couple of times,” Grey said. “But she was
able to get it done, and we thank her for it.” The program, which took McKenna more than a year to organize, honored the memory of 17 Franklin Square residents who served their country, including Grey’s father, brother and brother-in-law. McKenna, a Franklin Square resident of more than 40 years, said she started the program after she learned that her daughter had worked on a similar project for veterans in New Jersey. Wanting to do the same for local veterans, McKenna introduced the Hometown Heroes Banner
project to her fellow board members at the Franklin Square Civic Association, who immediately jumped on the idea. McKenna worked with the VFW Post to display the banners there, and through the civic association’s website, veterans and residents could sponsor banners for $125 each. And with help from the Town of Hempstead, there was a space for 11 banners to be flown at Rath Park, including six sponsored by the Franklin Square & Munson Fire Department.

Sir Winston rallies to win Belmont By Tony Bellissimo There was still about half a mile to go in the 151st running of the Belmont Stakes in June 2019, when trainer Mark Casse, who saddled two entries in the final leg of the Triple Crown, sensed it wasn’t going to be War of Will’s day. “I could tell that he was struggling a little,” Casse said of the Preakness winner. “Because normally, he’s on the bit and wanting to go.” Then Casse watched as jockey Joel Rosario guided his other entry, Sir Winston, on a ground-saving trip for most of the 1-½ mile journey before swinging threewide down the stretch where he overtook 21-1 longshot front-runner Joevia and held off 9-5 favorite Tacitus by a length to capture the “Test of the Champion” in 2:28.30 before a crowd of 56,217 on a picture-perfect Saturday. “He broke real good,” said Rosario, who rode Sir Winston to a runner-up finish in the Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont on May 11. “I got into the spot where I wanted to be. I was able to save ground the whole time. I was in a good spot. After that, it was all him. I knew he was going to win

Franklin Square/Elmont Schools Carey students earn merit-based scholarships
T
he National Merit Scholarship Corporation selected H. Frank Carey High School students Gabriella DeVito, Robert Humrich and Clare Schwarzenberg as Commended Students for the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. The scholarship program provides students the opportunity to earn scholarship awards based on their PSAT or NMS Qualifying test scores. Every year, 1.6 million students take these exams, but only 50,000 of the top scorers are indentified as Commended Students. The top one percent of scorers are then selected as semifinalists and qualify to become finalists. Finalists are announced in November after examining the semifinalists’ scores, academic records, extracurricular activities and their high school’s letter of recommendation.

M
ore than 100 residents gathered at Gotham Avenue School to celebrate Elmont’s Jazz Masters, Dazzlers and coders in March 2019. The district Jazz Masters ensemble kicked off the night as they performed a sneak peek of their concert. The Dazzlers Club, which focuses on cheering and dancing, then took the stage to show off their latest choreographed performance.
The Elmont Board of Education presented each of these students with certificates of recognition for their work throughout the school year. The district also recognized the Girls Who Code programs, which allows female students from all six schools to explore computer science and learn the basics of coding.

Elmont vets host ninth annual bike blessings

T
he Elmont American Legion Riders of Post 1033 held their ninth annual Blessing of the Bikes in April 2019. The local veterans’ tradition invited Freeport’s Deacon Bruce Burnham to spray holy water on more than 100 motorcycles to bless them and the 2019 riding season. Legion Rider President Bill Stegman said the event serves as a way to unite bikers and members of the Long Island com-

Five members of Post 1033 formed Elmont’s branch of the American Legion Riders ten years ago in order to promote motorcycle safety and a social atmosphere for local riders. Elmont’s American Legion Riders Post 1033 also offers services in funeral processions and actively participates in local parades and ceremonies.

Elmont finally gets its school speed zone By Ronny Reyes
F
or more than a decade, Elmont residents have demanded Town of Hempstead and Nassau County officials to do something to address the high rate of auto accidents that have plagued the stretch of Dutch Broadway near the Elmont Memorial High School. But despite the calls of local representatives and civic leaders, the complaints fell on deaf ears as for years town and county officials seemed to have dragged their feet. But after a crash in October 2018 left four students injured, two critically, on Dutch Broadway, the Elmont community’s frustration boiled over as neighbors, parents and activists reinvigorated their efforts to bring a permanent change to the road.
After meeting with residents in November, Town Supervisor Laura Gillen began working with them to designate the patch of Dutch Broadway between Astor Street and Elmont Road a 20-miles-perhour school zone. In April 2019, about a month after the launch of the Gillen’s “20 is Plenty” initiative, the New York State Department of Transportation approved the town’s request to create a new school zone for the safety of the Elmont Memorial students. “We just received approval from Albany and are now in the process of printing signs and collaborating with county officials on proper placement and installation,” Gillen said. “I am pleased to see action finally taking place on every level of government to ensure the safety and security of our local residents and students.”

he libraries in Franklin Square and Elmont serve a vital function for the community. As a meeting place for clubs and organizations, the libraries also serve as havens for students who need to escape everyday destractions. Both libraries provide a free family movie viewing every week, live entertainment, lecturers, special exhibits, expert guests and activites geared toward children and young adults to encourage them to read more, whether it’s a craft, game or seasonal celebration. They emphasize that achieving literacy is the key to a healthy and productive lifestyle, and there are many ways to experience it.

Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles, with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Democrat Laura Gillen — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
