A letter from the publishers

e are proud to present our annual Franklin Square/Elmont Guide, a special supplement to the Franklin Square/Elmont Herald.

Those of us who live here know that Franklin Square and Elmont are wonderful places. In this little book, you’ll find many of the organizations and institutions that make them so very special. The purpose of the Guide is to expand upon what the Herald does each week: describe and celebrate this unique community and its many services and organizations. For newcomers, the Guide provides a comprehensive look at all the communities have to offer. Longtime residents and business leaders will also find it a handy reference. We hope you enjoy this year’s Guide. We’ve tried to make it the best guide the Franklin Square/Elmont Herald ever published. We also hope you enjoy reading the Franklin Square/Elmont Herald 52 weeks a year. And no matter how far from home you find yourself, you can read an online version of the Herald at At our website, you can access the latest stories and special coverage of breaking news including election results. Clifford Richner Publisher

P.S. If you’re not currently receiving the Herald by mail each week, please see our ad on page 34 for subscription information or look for the enclosed subscription envelope, or find us online at On the cover: Elmont Memorial High graduates Sean charles, left, and Anthony James had a blast jousting at Sen. hat is now Franklin Square was originally used as grazing land and farmland by white settlers near the center of the Hempstead Plains. By the 1950’s, farmland was rapidly being replaced by homes. Franklin Square was a major beneficiary of the emigration of people from New York City. Franklin Square School District refers to the town’s four elementary schools: Polk Street, Willow Road, John Street and Washington Street. There are three other schools based in Franklin Square but as parts of other school districts: St. Catherine of Sienna Elementary, Valley Stream North and H. Frank Carey High. The town has a volunteer fire department and is served by the Nassau County Police Department’s 4th Precinct. Its most notable park is Rath Park, which includes a pool, basketball, handball, tennis, football and baseball

Town organizations include the Franklin Square Chamber of Commerce, led by Joseph Ardito, Esq., a historical society, youth football and soccer programs and Franklin Square Little League. One of the town’s oldest and most noteable restaurants is Plattdeutsche, which hosts many of community events. Franklin Square has about 30,000 residents living in about 10,300 units, according to the 2010 census. It is 83 percent white, 13 percent Hispanic, 7 percent Asian and 3 percent AfricanAmerican.

Notable residents of Franklin Square include Barbara Rosenthal, who wrote for the Franklin Square Bulletin in 1959 at the age of 11, novelist Alice Hoffman, radio personality Rich Davis, country singer Lisa Matassa, “Jersey Shore” reality television show star Jenni “JWoww” Farley, music journalist and award-winning author Jeff Tamarkin, radio and television host Sean Hannity, NASA astronaut Michael Massimino, professional football player Vinny Testaverde and Major League Baseball player Al Weis.

any of Elmont's visitors come for the nationally renowned Belmont Park, which hosts the annual horseracing event known as the Belmont Stakes. Elmont’s boundaries were decided in 1898, when its shift from Queens had been finalized. Before that, however, Elmont was predominantly farmland and controlled by Dutch settlers. Belmont Racetrack was completed in 1905, a turning point in its history. Sale of the farmland began thereafter and houses were erected in its place. Elmont School District includes six elementary schools: Dutch Broadway, Clara H. Carlson, Gotham Avenue, Covert Avenue, Alden Terrace and Stewart Manor. Nearly two-thousand students attend Elmont Memorial High School, part of the Sewanhaka Central High School District. Elmont also has a volunteer fire department and is served by the Nassau County Police Department’s 4th Precinct.

Christina Daly/Herald

The Belmont Stakes, despite tightened security, was a huge success in June. The Elmont Chamber of Commerce is led by Paul Sapienza. There are a number of civic associations, such as the Elmont East End Civic Association, that are designated toward helping residents express their views in organized ways. Elmont has about 33,000 residents living in about 10,300 units, according to the 2010 census. It is 45 percent African-American, 30 percent white, 22 percent Hispanic and 11 percent Asian. One of the most prominent features of the community is the Elmont Memorial Library. A beautiful build-

ing and hub for a variety of events and entertainment series, the library boasts an auditorium and huge space for town meetings. Thousands visit the library every month for a truly interactive media experience. Notable residents of Elmont are WNBA President Donna Orender, author Nelson DeMille, comedian Andy Kaufman (buried at Beth David Cemetery) and trainer Cara Castronuova, who has appeared on “The Biggest Loser” television show.

Donovan Berthoud/Herald

Basketball was the most popular sport at the Jack Martins Sports Classic in July at Dutch Broadway School in Elmont.

Nassau CouNty Nassau County is governed by an elected Legislature. The Legislature is comprised of legislators from 19 districts. It includes an independent budget director who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters. The Legislature also enables residents to submit petitions for proposed new laws that legislators are obligated to consider. The 19 county legislators serve two-year terms. The county executive — currently Republican Edward Mangano — serves a four-year term and is the chief administrator. Nassau also has an elected comptroller, currently George Maragos, a district attorney, Kathleen Rice, and a county clerk, Maureen O'Connell. towN of hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of approximately 760,000 people. Within the Town there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Under the current system, the Town of Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Kate Murray — and a six-member Town Council. The six members of the council are elected from one of six councilmatic districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have a four-year term of office. The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government. She presides over all town board meetings, directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments, employing just more than 2,100 people. As the chief financial officer of the township, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
